Wheels on the Danforth will be celebrating its 8th year with fun for the whole family this weekend. The event, run by the Crossroads on the Danforth BIA, is free for everyone. The festivities begin on Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Stop by for a showing of the classic Ghostbusters in Oakridge Park at 8:30 p.m. The movie is sponsored by Councillor Michelle Holland-Berardinetti and Local 416. On Aug. 19, families are welcome to check out two car shows, live music, street performers, food vendors, shops and more. Children can head to the Free Kids’ Zone to have their faces painted or jump in a bouncy castle. There will also be a car available for kids to paint. The car shows that give the event its name will feature classics, exotics, tuners, muscle cars, hot rods and motorcycles, which will be judged by professionals. The winning vehicles’ owners will receive trophies and prizes. This year, Wheels on the Danforth will have three stages for families to enjoy a wide range of musical acts and performers, including Steven’s Garage, Greystone, The Two Fours and The Dukes. Buskers will perform on the street and EDM DJs will entertain show-goers into the night.

The Toronto East Bike Festival will also take part in the event. Visitors can join the group for rides and demonstrations promoting safe cycling in Toronto. Wheels on the Danforth will take place at the Crossroads on the Danforth, where Danforth Ave. and Danforth Rd. meet. Markets, cooking programs part of multipronged plan JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having proper eating habits is one of the bedrocks of healthy living, but for as many as 40 per cent of respondents to a survey outlining the resources and needs of residents in east Toronto, the price of fruits and vegetables can make that goal hard to realize. The Healthy Kids Community Challenge is aiming to put a stop to that problem by increasing access to healthy food through community partnerships and initiatives. According to Shannon Wiens of the South Riverdale Community Health Centre, one of the organizations behind the needs assessment survey, there are a wide variety of programs available to help families better access

good food, but there are still shortfalls. "According to Toronto Public Health, (only) 13 per cent of kids in Grade 7 to 12 are eating enough vegetables and fruits," she said. "In our survey, 40 per cent of respondents said access to healthy food and fruits and vegetables was a barrier for them." There are resources in east Toronto and East York - 11 Good Food Box programs, six community kitchens, 22 community gardens, and 19 student nutrition programs, for instance - but the need persists. Tess D., who asked that her last name not be used, said programs such as FoodShare’s affordable Good Food Market at the Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre help to bridge the gap when it comes to affordability. She has both volunteered at and benefited from the market, helping her family and others make ends meet.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Students from Selwyn Elementary School taste home made salad dressing during the Healthy Kids Community Challenge, which aims to raise awareness of healthy eating and food accessibility. "The Good Food Market is very important in our community. Some people cannot afford fresh fruits and vegetables from the grocery store, which is why we cut prices, helping people in our community

to eat healthy," she said. "Sometimes we go week to week without food. That’s why it’s great to have the affordable market." Fellow volunteer Ann N. said the program is crucial for those on a tight

budget or isolated seniors. "We have lots of seniors that come from nearby buildings, therefore, they don’t have to walk far," she said. "Sometimes they call to see what we have. I’ll make up a bag and bring it

Despite its massive size - 20 storeys high with a 250,000 square foot footprint and 70-storey smokestack and location at 440 Unwin Dr. in the Port Lands, it went largely unused until recently. Last year, Luminato took over portions of the building for programming, and other events have also taken place

inside the building. "The city has a history of working with event organizers at that venue," said City of Toronto spokesperson Wynna Brown, adding that occupancy permits were granted for certain events where safety standards have been met. Now, however, Toronto Fire Services is warning that the building’s interior re-

The Hearn Generating Station earned plenty of plaudits as a venue for last year’s Luminato Festival, but safety concerns have led to it no longer being deemed suitable for indoor events. Toronto Fire Services determined that there are concerns with various safety elements on the inside of the building, including issues with fire alarms, proper lighting and suitable fire exits. The closure led to the Waterfront Night Market slated to host an event at the site last weekend - moving the entire event outside. The Hearn Generating Station was once a massive electricity generating station, burning coal and then

quires corrective actions before it can be used for events. "Our primary focus is to protect the safety of the public," said Toronto Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop in a statement. "Hosting public events in a space that is not equipped with fire alarm systems, proper lighting, fire exits and other serious deficiencies is not acceptable." Further complicating matters is the fact that the Hearn is not approved for hosting events on a regular basis. It has been used as a film location, but zoning bylaws do not permit it to be used as a regular event space. The city plans to continue working with the building’s lessee, Studios of America, and event organizers to ensure proper safety standards are met, but the interior will effectively remain off-limits until corrective action has been taken to ensure proper safety measures are in place. Studios of America could not be reached for comment.

to their building and they give me the money." Stephanie Joseph started up a "Tweens, Teens and Cuisines" cooking class in Flemingdon Park to help instill healthy eating habits among youngsters in her community. "Kids in grades 7 to 12 don’t have many ways to get the skills to eat healthy," she said. "In Flemingdon Park, food security is a big issue. A lot of families aren’t from Canada, so they have a hard time finding the foods they had back home or they find the prices expensive on a smaller income." A recent launch of a tower garden at Selwyn Elementary School through FoodShare is yet another step toward ensuring food security in the east end, with students encouraged to help grow leafy greens. While food security remains a challenge for far too many, east Toronto is doing its utmost to meet that challenge head on.

Programs to be located in already-approved sites Responding to increasing overdoses and overdose-related deaths, Toronto Public Health has announced that it will be opening of three interim supervised injection sites. According to an Aug. 14 news release, this move, which comes just days after a group of Greater Toronto Area harm reduction workers set up an unsanctioned, pop-up overdose prevention site at Moss Park, is "intended to provide immediate services while work is completed to open the city’s permanent supervised injection site this fall." They will be located at the same three sites already approved for permanent supervised injection site programs: the SRCHC on Queen Street East, near Carlaw Avenue; the Park-

"In response to this issue, and in partnership with our community, we will be opening an interim overdose prevention service in the short term until the permanent facility opens," said Dr. Eileen de

Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, in the communiqué. "Each of these overdoses, whether fatal or not, represents a son, a daughter, a family member or a friend. This issue is having a devastating impact on people who use drugs, their families, friends and many others who work tirelessly to provide intervention and support for people in crisis." Part of Toronto’s Over-

dose Action Plan, the program aims to provide a safer and hygienic environment for people to inject drugs under the supervision of qualified staff. The plan, which was adopted by the board of health in March 2017, also includes educating people about how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to respond, including administering naloxone, the medication used to block the effects of opioids Since early June, Toronto Public Health has trained more 700 staff members from six city divisions and 250-plus community agencies, and since the start of this year has distributed over 1,000 naloxone kits to people who use drugs. The permanent sites are scheduled to open by the end of the year. According to Toronto Public Health, from 2004 to 2015 there was a 73 per cent increase in overdose deaths in Toronto. -Joanna Lavoie

ABOUT US

Be a tourist in your own backyard At 150, it’s safe to say that Canada has aged pretty well. It’s also safe to assume that most Canadians have a fairly decent grasp of their country; its diverse regions and cultures, and the landmarks and destinations that have become synonymous with travelling across our land. The majestic Rockies. The vast prairies. Thundering Niagara Falls. Historic Quebec City. Peggy’s Cove. You know them, but have you visited? Canadians like to travel, flocking to New York City, or Florida, or heading overseas to explore Paris or Rome. All worthy destinations. But is 2017 the year to explore a little closer to home? Many in the tourism industry certainly think so. Last fall, Lonely Planet chose Canada as its ’destination of the year’ for 2017. Earlier this year, the New York Times ranked Canada as its top travel destination. The reasons are many: a favourable exchange rate; safety concerns in major destinations in Europe; an endless variety of attractions that coincide with our year-long sesquicentennial celebration. Fun and cultural awareness aside, tourism is big business. Nearly 20 million international visitors came in 2016, with the majority, 13.9 million, coming from the U.S. To keep those intrepid travellers happy, fed and informed requires hundreds of thousands of jobs in the tourism sector, accounting for roughly 11 per cent of the total labour force. Generating $90 billion in total economic activity, tourism is good business as well as nation-building. So by all means hop on a plane or train and see the sights. But remember, some of the best-kept secrets are right around the corner. It’s often true that citizens of a particular city or area, having lived there for years, have never taken the time to actually be a tourist in their town. The CN Tower, Fort York, Kensington Market, all draw foreign visitors but may remain a mystery to folks literally around the corner. Don’t know what’s out there to see? Start with a visit to your local tourism office. There are a myriad of treasures in and around Toronto. Or check out one of the dozens of festivals or attractions in the city. From the CNE to Buskerfest to TIFF, thousands attend these events each year, but you wouldn’t have to look very hard to find a friend or neighbour who has never attended any of them. On a tight budget? Hop on a bike and see things you typically miss in a car. Find a free movie night at a local park. Head to your local library for free programs and events. Be a tourist in your own backyard. You’ll be happy you did.

A vibrant culture may be victim of city’s success One of the advantages of being a few steps behind the curve is that you get a warning before the precipitous drop. So it is, and often has been, with Toronto when held against other major world cities. For example, as our underfunded transit system teeters, New York City’s bigger and older one is in collapse. Watching that sort of thing go on elsewhere gives us urgency here. With that in mind, it might be wise to peer over the horizon and across the pond at another city on a different kind of brink: London. The U.K. capital is way ahead of Toronto on a different trajectory than public transit: raw wealth. Toronto’s until-just-now booming real estate market is nothing

DAVID NICKLE The City compared to the explosion in cost and wealth that’s happened in London. Housing has been priced out of any reasonable family budget, and that has led to an exodus. As reported in The Guardian earlier this month, people are leaving the city to the tune of 80,000 annually: both homeowners and renters. And, it’s not just people. The so-called "night" economy has taken a hit along

with that - because, as old common areas are redeveloped, so go the activities that might have taken place there. Culturally, the city is becoming sterile. It seems as though Toronto is on the same trajectory. Live music venues have been shuttering like a row of dominoes this year, as redevelopment pushed out some and untenable rent hikes pushed out others. And it’s not just concert venues. Dramatic shifts in property values are forcing softer cultural spots, like the venerable Eliot’s Bookstore on Yonge Street, to close down. It’s a side-effect of prosperity: a rising real estate tide raises all boats, and property taxes too. The House of Lords hair

salon, just a few doors down, is closing under similar pressures. Those places join Sam the Record Man, A & A Records and Tapes, HMV, and The World’s Biggest Bookstore among the chorus of destinations that at one point drew if not the world, then much of the country, to Toronto. It begs the question: how long can Toronto stay a cultural centre, with the culture gone from its centre? Andreas Katsouris and is wife Jennifer Bell relax at their Beach home, just weeks after Andreas was detained by a group of unknown men in Nairobi, where he was working on that country’s election campaign. ing in Holland. The family arrived home safely to Toronto on Saturday. Bell, who had visited her husband in Kenya just weeks earlier, initially got word about the situation with her husband and his colleague on Friday evening when she received a call from Phillips’ brother, Dean. "I was told they’d been taken somewhere and had been detained. That’s all I knew," said Bell, who said her first thought was that time is of the essence. One of the first things she did was call her local MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith for assistance. "He was wonderful. He was so great," said Bell, who works in public health and has travelled abroad extensively personally and professionally. Erskine-Smith said he did what he could with the little information that was available. "All we knew is that Andreas had been detained and had disappeared in Nairobi. I can’t imagine being in (Jennifer’s) shoes," said Erskine-Smith who then contacted his colleague Omar Alghabra, the parliamentary secretary to the minister of foreignaffairs, and got the ball rolling on helping Katsouris get home safely. "This wasn’t your typical constituent request," said Erskine-Smith, who often helps people in

Beaches-East York with immigration and deportation matters. During his captivity, Katsouris said many things crossed his mind. He wondered if the men were really police officers. At times, he even wondered if he’d make it home alive. "I had moments of fear, but I pushed them aside by telling myself everything is going to be OK," he shared, adding once they got on the road he got the feeling that the men didn’t want to hurt him, but just wanted him and his colleague out of the country. Despite his ordeal, Katsouris said he’ll continue to travel abroad with his work. "I’m not going to change anything," he smiled, admitting in the back of his mind he knows situations like the one he went through can happen any time. "I’ll do this again, for sure. I met some wonderful people, friends and colleague I really admire. It was a really enriching experience and I wouldn’t want to give that up." On Aug. 8, incumbent candidate Uhuru Kenyatta, whose father Jomo is that country’s first president, was re-elected. "The party I was working for does not accept the results. They think they are fraudulent," Katsouris said. -with files from Torstar News

company’s work had started to pay off and poll numbers were on the rise. On Friday, Aug. 4, just four days before the contentious election, things turned sour when a group of about six men crowded around Katsouris as he was walking from his apartment complex to a restaurant for dinner. "They knew who I was and they were looking for me," he shared during an interview Monday at his home. Katsouris, who was given a few minutes to call his wife, said the group of men, which seemed to be increasing in size, then removed his cellphones and laptop, and demanded he bring them to his American colleague who was at his apartment in the same complex. And while the men, which Katsouris said identified themselves as police, were a "bit rough and pushy," he said they demonstrated no real "outward display of violence." Things did get a bit tense once they arrived at Phillips’ apartment when both men, which Katsouris said were not allowed to contact their lawyers or seek assistance from the consulate, protested. In the end, Katsouris and Philips agreed to pack their bags and were put into separate SUVs for a five-hour drive that concluded at the airport. Once there, they were told they’re being deported because they did not have proper work visas. Documents explaining the men’s detention were never produced. Katsouris, who said he feels their deportation was politically motivated, was put on a plane to Frankfurt, Germany. He then took a train to the Netherlands to connect with his wife, Jennifer Bell, and their 14-year-old daughter, who wasn’t initially told about the ordeal. Bell, her sister, and daughter Sophia were vacation-
