JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Sarah Kerr and Tom Affleck have a special affinity for the Central American nation of Nicaragua. For the last 11 years, they’ve regularly visited the impoverished country to build classrooms and provide children with muchneeded school supplies and books through their charitable organization, SchoolBOX. Back in 2006, Affleck, who currently works as the entrepreneurial leader for Knox Presbyterian Church, was doing large-scale development work in Nicaragua when one weekend he visited a friend in a rural area and gifted some school supplies to some local children. It was a small but life-changing gesture that ultimately prompted him to create SchoolBOX, which was officially registered as a charity in 2007. "That small donation enabled two young girls to attend school," Kerr, SchoolBOX’s executive director,

shared during a recent interview at their Beach Hill home. "It’s been so moving to see kids we’ve helped succeed in school, have a better future, break the cycle of poverty and follow their dreams." When SchoolBOX was founded, Kerr was working as a volunteer educator in Guyana. She met Affleck, who was from the same town of Almonte, Ont., and together they started directing their efforts to helping children in Nicaragua, which is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti. In 2008, with a group of volunteers Kerr and Affleck headed back to Nicaragua for the first classroom build. Next spring, SchoolBOX will be building its 100th classroom. "We’ve got the work plan in place and we should be breaking ground in March (2018) in the rural village of El Caracol," said Kerr, adding volunteers are always needed and welcome. "We’d love to invite friends and neighbours from

Tom Affleck and Sarah Kerr travel to Nicaragua several times a year with their charitable organization SchoolBOX to build classrooms and hand out school supplies. this community to join us. It’s definitely life-changing for you as an individual, but also a great thing to do as a family. It’s a different way to give." The couple along with team members travel back to

Nicaragua two or three times a year for both classroom builds as well as to scope out new project possibilities. Kerr said SchoolBOX, which has the global mission of making education possi-

ble, gives volunteers and supporters a chance to directly see and experience how their generosity changes people’s lives by investing in communities. "What we are able to create is an opportunity for or-

dinary people to have a direct impact," she said. In 2009, SchoolBOX launched an Indigenous Youth Empowering Students program where Aboriginal youth from Canada could learn more about, embrace, and share their culture with others in an empowering way, while helping build a school for kids in Nicaragua. This year, the program titled SchoolBOX Canada will be building a library in Wabauskang First Nation in northwestern Ontario. In addition to the library project, a group of Indigenous youth from across Canada travelled to Nicaragua earlier this month on a crosscultural exchange where they helped build classrooms and handed out school supplies. Last November, Affleck received the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Cross. A 10-day volunteer trip with SchoolBOX costs $1,500 U.S. and includes food and accommodation. ’Make Danforth Great Again’ slogan fails to impress JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

M. outside Tora Home Design, which is owned by BIA chairman Louie Dapergolas. Superimposed on a number of those photographs is an image along with so-called quotes of approval from Donald Trump who apparently "visited" the BIA late last year to view the "great work being done in Danforth Village." "He was really impressed with the Danforth Village BIA and the recent streetscape improvements to the area. He really was," the tongue-in-cheek post read. Louis Dapergolas, chair of the Danforth Village BIA, posted a note to the community on the group’s Facebook page in response to backlash pertaining to the Facebook video. "This video was created and posted in November 2016 as a satire of Donald Trump. At the time, many of us believed that the idea

that he would be elected President of the United States was outrageous," he wrote. "This video in no way suggests any support of Donald Trump or his beliefs, especially in light of what is currently happening in the United States. Instead, it was made to promote our Window Washing initiative, which is an exciting collaboration between the Danforth Village BIA and Dixon Hall, a shelter on Danforth Avenue. This initiative gives shelter users an opportunity to engage in gainful, meaningful employment." Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis sits on the BIA board and said while the campaign "was an attempt to be humourous, it really missed the mark." The Ward 31 representative said the community’s strong reaction shows

Late last year, the Danforth Village BIA started offering a window washing service to its members. Window washers use a red cart inscribed with the slogan "Make Danforth Great Again". there is no room for any kind of Trump-related rhetoric in east Toronto. East Enders Against Racism, an east Toronto-

based community group committed to counteracting hate speech and hate crimes, is denouncing the marketing campaign.

The Danforth Village Business Improvement Area’s use of a slogan inspired by that of U.S. President Donald Trump has hit a sour note with many in the community. Last week, area resident Yona Nestel was walking along Danforth Avenue, near Main Street, when she was ’shocked’ to see a red cart with the tagline "Make Danforth Great Again" outside a business. She posted about it on Facebook and soon learned the slogan was being used to market a window washing service for merchant members of the Danforth Village BIA. "I’m shocked and disgusted that a BIA representing people of colour-owned businesses would think this appropriating Trump’s campaign

slogan would be funny or clever. Especially given how overtly racist Trump is," she said during a Facebook interview with The Mirror. Nestel, who moved to the Danforth East area four years ago because of the community’s diversity, said she wants to see the "campaign" shut down and an apology issued to both the community as well as the businesses, many of which are owned and operated by people of colour, the BIA represents. She also wants the Danforth Village BIA to acknowledge this was "in very bad taste and could be interpreted as racist." Last fall, the DVBIA launched the program posting about it on its website last November. The now-removed post featured a number of photos of a female window washer identified as Sara

Preliminary work underway on Lakeshore GO line expansion JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Preliminary work is now underway to expand the GO Transit network on the Lakeshore East line. In recent weeks, crews have been working on a geotechnical study, which requires the drilling of boreholes at multiple locations across the network to test soil conditions for the future construction of the electrification infrastructure. While minimal impact is expected for residents and adjacent properties, residents can expect some local construction noise for the duration of a few hours for a few nights. The work is scheduled to be completed overnight and on weekends when there is less train activity. Weather permitting, it is expected to be completed

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A Toronto teacher killed Sunday, Aug. 13 during a terror attack in Burkina Faso is being remembered as an exceptional educator who thought outside the box. Most recently, Tammy Jane Mackay Chen, 34, worked as a French immersion teacher at Glen Ames Senior Public School in the Beach from 2011 to 2013. Chen, who was sixmonth pregnant, was living in Burkina Faso while she completed a Ph.D at the University of Cambridge. Her husband Mehsen Fenaiche, a Senegalese citizen, also died in the attack. The Montreal native was one of two Canadians killed when suspected Islamic extremists reportedly starting firing at a Turkish restaurant in the west African nation’s capital city of Ouagadougou. Ca-

nadian citizen Bilel Diffalah was also among the 18 killed in the act of terrorism. Hilary Scott’s now-18year-old daughter Brynna was one of Chen’s pupils when she taught Grade 8 French at Glen Ames. "She was an incredible teacher who caught the attention of everyone who knew her, in and out of the classroom as she was so beloved," Scott told The Beach Mirror via Facebook. Chen also taught both of Ward 32 Councillor MaryMargaret McMahon’s children when they attended the Williamson Road middle school. "She was fantastic at teaching the kids," said McMahon, whose now 18-yearold daughter Becca considered Chen her favourite teacher. "She was big on social justice. She had the kids out volunteering in the

Chen, who taught both of her daughters at Glen Ames. "Tammy went well beyond the scope of a teach-

er’s responsibilities. She was compassionate, warm, supportive, and a wonderful role model," she shared during a recent interview. Aziz said Chen opened her daughter Siena’s eyes to humanitarianism connecting her with two pen pals in Burkina Faso. Chen also helped her daughter work through some issues involving bullying. "She was a wonderful person in so many ways. We are so devastated to hear this news," she said. The Toronto District School Board offered its condolences in an Aug. 15 post on Twitter. "Tammy is being remembered as a very passionate, charismatic and diligent teacher by her colleagues at Glen Ames, where she taught in the French Immersion Program," the note read. "Not only was she respected and well-liked by students, parents and col-

leagues, she was always willing to go the extra mile to help students. The TDSB, together with the Glen Ames Senior Public School community, is deeply saddened by her passing and our thoughts are with her family, friends and those that knew her." Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo also offered her condolences in a tweet as Chen had also taught at Swansea Junior Public School, which is in her riding. "Tammy Chen teacher @SwanseaPS was a victim of the #BurkinaFasoAttack . Love light and prayer to her family," she wrote. Aside from teaching and studying, Chen was also the co-founder and president of Bright Futures of Burkina Faso, a registered non-profit offering interest-free microcredit loans to women in Burkina Faso. -with files from Torstar News

ABOUT US

Charlottesville proves we must unite against hate After the events in Charlottesville and their aftermath this month, we in Canada might be tempted to allow just a little bit of smugness amid the horror we feel at the images of swastikas and torches on parade - at the evil brutality of Heather Heyer’s murder there. We should strive to avoid that. Their president aside, many Americans, most perhaps, have responded to the resurgence of neo-Nazism and white supremacy with powerful and principled rejection. America may remain bitterly divided, with a cut still very much in need of healing sustained during that country’s Civil War. But its loudest voices - again, excepting President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed - are most hateful when they speak of hate itself. Canada isn’t in nearly that sort of trouble, or so it seems. We are open to immigration, welcoming of refugees, inclusive and kind-hearted. If there is evidence to the contrary, surely it is a trifling bit, or if larger and more systemic, then it is something that we have common capacity to correct. Thinking that is a mistake, particularly if one is doing so from the point of view of the dominant, which is to say white, culture. Setting our own prime minister’s "sunny ways" narrative aside, Canada has a history of hateful rhetoric and fascist movements, and Toronto has too often been at the centre of it. The 1930s’ Christie Pits riot in which real Nazi supporters clashed with Jewish and Italian groups is a good touchstone, but there have been more: the recentlypassed Holocaust-denier Ernst Zündel was a Torontonian for many years, peddling his hate from a house in Cabbagetown. The Heritage Front neo-Nazi organization had a presence in Toronto before it disbanded in 2005. More recently, Torontonians in the east end have found their mailboxes filled with the hate-filled screeds from Your Ward News, a publication that Canada Post will no longer deliver for that reason. And of course it is Toronto where now-former Rebel Media correspondent Faith Goldy is based. The far-right website let her go just last week after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast, following her attendance at the Charlottesville rally. It would be wrong to say that Torontonians have tolerated this sort of thing all these years; we haven’t. But we have taken false comfort, in the belief that the seeds of racism and out-and-out Nazism that have been blowing through the gutters will never truly take root.

He live-streamed it all. "If you put ’nightmare’ and ’hell’ and ’disgrace,’ that’s what it comes up to," he says of his situation. Follow politics closely in Toronto? You’ve probably seen Clarke. Five times, he’s run for mayor; nine times for MPP, four for MP, twice for councillor. He leads "The People," a registered political party. In public, he’s always campaigning. His campaigning voice is loud. I’ve seen him escorted offstage at debates when he wasn’t invited. He’s waved a flag or held a cross when

the Annex. I saw him disrupt a demonstration supporting the homeless in St. Jamestown; he wore roller skates and a bed sheet. At 53, he’s on disability payments, has back problems, liver problems, a busted foot. A program for adults living with serious mental illness pays his rent. But his landlord in Scarborough’s Kingston-Galloway area wants him out. Running to replace the late Rob Ford as an Etobicoke councillor last August, Clarke kept hanging makeshift signs outside his building and from his balcony. The landlord, and Clarke’s own social worker, testified this was related to mental illness. Clarke says he’s exercis-

ing his right to campaign. He maintains the landlord, forced by his complaints to clean up his building’s playground and make various repairs, wants him out for that. "I told them the only way they can win is if I wind up dead or in hospital." Last Friday, he went to Divisional Court to get more time for an appeal. If evicted, he’ll be homeless again. Clarke can annoy. He videotapes his arguments. But I understand now: as long as Clarke runs for office, Toronto’s homeless, its truly marginalized, its ill, cannot completely be ignored. 2. Love your lighting. Filling your home with gorgeous functional items can only go so far if you don’t have the right lighting to flatter and display them. Silhouette shadings from Hunter Douglas let you transform harsh exterior light by diffusing it, spreading it evenly throughout your space so you can maximize daylight hours and reduce your need for artificial light.

4. Make a statement. Use larger eye-catching accessories to create an impact and focal point, instead of a bunch of smaller items that can end up adding clutter. Think a stately vintage mirror, a gallery wall or an oversized couch. 5. Get smart. Today’s homes benefit from sleek design featuring top technology. Imagine being able to schedule your shades to open and close with your local sunset and sunrise, or a fridge that snaps a pic of what’s inside every time it closes. Incorporate these surprisingly affordable features into your home and hook them up to your smart devices for maximum luxury and convenience.

3. Edit ruthlessly. Allow your style to shine by eliminating clutter, especially in high-traffic zones

Boxing club for women scraping by l Continued from page 1

Newsgirls is one of the safest spaces some of these women have ever experienced." For the last 11 years, Toronto Newsgirls has been located in a 3,500 sq. ft industrial space on Carlaw Avenue, just south of Gerrard Street East. Somehow, month after month, Howe has managed to scrape together the $5,000-plus needed to pay the rent. "It’s not an easy way to live," admitted Howe, who has recently called on friends and supporters as well as the 5,000 Newsgirls alumni to become a "Sugar Mama" and donate as little as $5 a month. "We want to be able to offer affordable programming and we just want security," said Howe, who also said it would be nice if she could actually draw a salary, hire a few coaches and even take a little time off. Howe said things have been even more challenging as of late, as a longtime recreational boxing program at the 250-member gym that catered to femaleidentified individuals who have experienced violence "took a different direction" and unexpectedly relocated. "Shape Your Life was one of our key sources of income at Newsgirls. At first, it was a shock, but crisis means opportunity," said Howe, who designed and ran the program for 10 years. "Every time something happens like this, I refuse

The club is Canada’s first female and trans boxing gym, and is facing financial struggles. to wallow. I see it as an opportunity to grow." Determined to continue to offer a recreational boxing program at the gym that would help empower women and trans people, she decided to revamp and expand the previous concept, and will soon be launching a new initiative called Outside the Ring. "We’re urging participants to think different and consider new ideas," she said of the new program, which will be open to women and trans people from all backgrounds, abilities, and walks of life starting in September. "The goal is to reach out to the community, to those who may not think to enter a boxing gym." This fall, Howe will once again start up an amateur boxing team. The goal is to get the 16 members ready for their first fight within a

year. Toronto Newsgirls, which also offers training for recreational coaches and competitive boxers, has also recently launched a new program for youth age 10 to 16 and their ’moms’ - called Newsgirls One-Two Combo. Down the line, Howe said she’d also like to resume international exchanges with other likeminded boxing gyms around the world. Last spring, Savoy, who has a theatre degree, wrote and performed a solo showcalled Newsgirl at the gym, as part of the Soulo Theatre Festival. From Sept. 21 to Sept. 24, she’ll be remounting the 70-minute show at the gym and donating a portion of the proceeds to female boxers in Calcutta. MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The City of Toronto is taking its parking ticket disputes away from courts and starting a new appeals system where tickets can be settled online. "You will be able to submit an online dispute of your penalty, meaning the entire process can be completed without having to leave home," the city has announced. The new Administrative Penalty System will start on Aug. 28, and offer drivers a chance to fight tickets either online, or in person at Metro Hall or the North York Civic Centre. In either case, a ruling will come not from a judge but a City Screening Officer, who can reduce or cancel fines, or give drivers more time to pay them. If that doesn’t satisfy, there’s a final hearing with an "independent" officer of the Administrative Penalty Tribunal. City officials this week said the new system will be quicker and more convenient than waiting for a time in court. In 2016, the City received 251,482 trial requests for parking tickets, and over the last 10 years, more than 1.8 million parking disputes

The City of Toronto has announced a new system allowing drivers to fight parking tags not in court, but online or in front of a city employee. Tickets issued before Aug. 28, 2017, however, must still be challenged in court. were processed in court, said Kalli Chapman, prosecution director for the City’s Legal Services Division. Waiting time for a trial on a disputed parking ticket ranges between seven and 12 months, depending on ticket volume, court location, and a parking enforcement officer’s ability to attend, she said. Parking tickets issued before Aug. 28 will continue to be processed through the courts, and the City is asking drivers to check its website at www.toronto.ca/aps for more information. The Toronto Police Parking Enforcement Unit

issues about 2.2 million parking tickets a year. "The new dispute process will allow the Parking Enforcement Unit to provide better service delivery, as officers will no longer be tied up in court," said Brian Moniz, the unit’s acting officer-in-charge. Moniz said the changes will also give enforcement officers more time to patrol, or respond to calls for service and enforcement. Paying tickets after Aug. 28 can still be done online, by mail or at City service counters at City Hall, Metro Hall or at civic centres in North York, Etobicoke, East York, York and Scarborough.
