Public meeting discusses ways to protect children and adults JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com East Torontonians are continuing their fight to stop graphic anti-abortion imagery in their community. In recent weeks, scores of area residents have received flyers containing graphic images of aborted fetuses in their mailboxes. Pro-life demonstrators carrying large placards with equally explicit images of unborn babies and strong slogans have also been making the rounds at several busy intersections along The Danforth, and in Riverdale and Leslieville. In late August, TorontoDanforth MPP Peter Tabuns along with city councillors Paula Fletcher and Mary Fragedakis and TDSB trustee Jennifer Story penned a joint letter to Ontario’s Attorney General calling for a court injunction against "graphic and traumatizing" images of deceased fetuses being distributed on flyers to homes and displayed on large posters during demonstrations at busy Toronto intersections. "We want you to seek an injunction blocking the use of horrifying images by an anti-abortion group, the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform, which is distributing flyers and displaying placards on major streets in our area," read the letter, which indicated the request for the injunction is to prevent a public nuisance.

Carolyn Egan (left) of the Ontario Coalition of Abortion, Toronto-Danforth MPP Peter Tabuns, Ward 30 Coun. Paula Fletcher, Ward 13 Coun. Sarah Doucette, and Ward 29 Coun. Mary Fragedakis took part in a recent meeting in Riverside on anti-abortion imagery. "These images are placed in people’s mailboxes. As parents have said to us their young children often go to get the mail and would be traumatized by the images. Pregnant women have complained that they have been profoundly disturbed by the images." Emilie Smith, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Attorney General, would only confirm they’re in receipt of the letter. "We have received MPP Tabuns’ letter regarding recent anti-abortion protest activity in the City of Toronto. This is an important issue and we will closely review his concerns," she wrote in an email to Metroland Media Toronto.
Smith also provided the following comment: "Every woman in Ontario has the right to make decisions about her own heath care - and they deserve to do so freely, and without fear. That’s why our government plans to introduce legislation that would, if passed, provide for the creation of ’safe access zones’ at specified health care facilities that offer women’s reproductive services," she wrote. "The goal of the proposed ’safe access zone’ legislation would be to help ensure the safety, and privacy of patients, staff and visitors at these facilities." About 50 area residents along with representatives from various community
groups and advocacy organizations as well as a handful of anti-choice advocates recently gathered at the Ralph Thornton Centre to talk about what steps they can take to protect children and adults who may be traumatized or feel harassed by the distribution or display of this type of imagery, which has been distributed across the GTA. Carolyn Egan of the Ontario Coalition of Abortion Clinics spoke at the meeting sharing a few insights about the momentum the antichoice movement has recently gained with the election of U.S. President Donald Trump. She also talked about the strategy in place in Canada to roll back wom-
en’s rights gains and to regulate access to abortions. "This is something that’s going to be continuing, continuing and continuing," she said. Fletcher said she’s fought hard for more than 45 years for women’s rights, and the messages being shared in the anti-abortion imagery are "from another time and another place." "This is a community that really does believe in a woman’s right to choose," she said, adding thousands of women died because of illegal, unsafe abortions. The gathering also included a robust discussion about the legal ramification of trying to stop anti-abortion imagery.
"I think people have a right to not be subject to this kind of graphic advertising that has been delivered to their homes," Fragedakis said. Many of those in attendance spoke about harassment or even hate speech as a defence versus the public nuisance argument. "It’s collective harassment of women. The collective rights of women are under attack here," said Leslieville resident Mariana Valverde, a legal studies professor. Parkdale-High Park Coun. Sarah Doucette also attended the Aug. 31 meeting and said she doesn’t take issue with the message but how it’s being delivered. In her area, there have been several street corner demonstrations as of late. Doucette has plans to approach her colleagues at Toronto city council about passing a bylaw that would ban this type of graphic signage. "We’re not stopping them from standing on the street, talking to people or handing out flyers, but we’re just stopping them being in people’s faces. You really cannot get away from them. That’s where people are feeling it is harassment," she recently told The Toronto Star. "I don’t think anyone is against freedom of speech. Women find them very upsetting, if you have lost a baby, this is very hard to see, these sorts of images. Residents are just saying to me, ’We don’t want to be going about our day-to-day lives and be confronted with these giant images.’" A petition which can be found at http://www.petertabuns.ca/anti_abortion_injunction has also been created.

New public art program starts in Don Valley Park will feature 14 large-scale, concrete gargoyle sculptures. The large-scale figures, which depict the gargoyles that adorn prominent buildings in downtown Toronto, will be located along the Lower Don Trail in the meadow north of the Bloor
Viaduct. In his works, Linklater, who is originally from Moose Cree First Nation, but now calls North Bay home, invites viewers to examine the trajectory of Toronto’s history and the changes made to the natural environment with the development
of cities in settler societies. According to a release, the artist sees gargoyles as the protectors of buildings that communicate a certain kind of power and authority, speaking to a larger conversation regarding ongoing Indigenous and colonial occupation of the city.
Curated by Toronto’s Kari Cwynar, the Don Valley Park Art Program is the result of a partnership between Evergreen and the City of Toronto. The multiyear project will feature a range of temporary works including sculptural installations, murals, billboards
and performances, by local, Canadian and international artists. Don River Park spans from Evergreen Brick Works to the mouth of Lake Ontario. Visit https://donrivervalleypark.ca/things-to-do/ art/ for more information.

Notice of Completion Lakeshore East Rail Corridor Expansion (Don River to Scarborough GO Station) – Transit Project Assessment Process The Project Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is upgrading its commuter rail system into Regional Express Rail. The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people and heading towards 10 million by 2041. To address the urgent transit needs of the GTHA, the Province of Ontario committed to implement Regional Express Rail and make other improvements to the GO system. By 2025, electrified trains will be running every 15 minutes or better, all day and in both directions, within the most heavily travelled sections of the GO network. To support this service increase, Metrolinx has completed a Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) under Ontario Regulation 231/08: Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings, made under the Environmental Assessment Act, to evaluate expanding and improving the Lakeshore East GO rail corridor between the Don River and Scarborough GO Station in the City of Toronto. The project involves: • • • • • •

At that time, WoodGreen Community Services, the City of Toronto, and numerous frontline staff coordinated the response. Because of the desperate need for decent housing, the east-end social service agency developed the historic rent supplement program and relocated the evicted individuals to market rent units throughout Toronto. ABOUT US
Legacy continues with Invictus Games The Toronto International Film Festival may have wrapped up last weekend, but Toronto has kept the red carpet rolled out with the Invictus Games about to take over. If there’s anyone that deserves the spotlight, it’s these soldiers and veterans - about 550 of them from 17 allied nations - who will take part in the event which kicks off with the opening ceremonies Saturday night. Competition takes place from Sunday through to the closing ceremonies the following Saturday night. The nations involved have all asked a lot of their armed forces. For those of us who live in a democracy, such as Canada, we have the privilege and responsibility to question our political leaders - past, present and future - whether the right decisions have been made in the deployment of our troops. What should never be up for debate is the support we must always have for those troops - the men and women we have sent, and continue to send, into harm’s way on our behalf. For Canada, that commitment includes being a part of the Global Coalition against Daesh in Iraq on the heels of a more than 12-year deployment in Afghanistan. These athletes, according to organizers, "have become ill or injured during or as a direct consequence of their service." You can bet they will try to win their events, but they have already won, in some cases hard earned battles, just by participating. Supporters are welcome to check out their efforts. There are some free events. Watch wheelchair tennis at Nathan Phillips Square, archery at Fort York, cycling in High Park, golf at St. George’s Golf and Country Club as well as the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, which is being held on a special course being built on the parking grounds adjacent to the Distillery District. Ticketed events (most at a very reasonable $25) include athletics at York University, swimming at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough and, at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens), indoor rowing, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Beware, some sessions have already sold out. The Invictus Games follow on the heels of this summer’s successful North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) for Indigenous youth. Both events benefited from the facilities bequeathed to us by The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Arguably, this is a much better use of our resources than an Olympics could ever be.

The urban heroes you don’t know about We live with heroes in Toronto, but we don’t know who they are. I met one, Martha Nyame, in Rexdale. From a village in Ghana called Abosamso, she never attended school. Her family was too poor. After emigrating to Canada, she returned to Abosamso in 1994 and saw many children that she knew faced a sad childhood like hers were uneducated. So, she changed their future. What was to be a family home became an orphanage and free school. In Toronto, Nyame worked two jobs and sent every dollar and box of supplies she could to Abosamso. "Even $5 is money," she says. More than 100 children
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto were housed and taught at Abosamso, even as fibromyalgia and arthritis advanced in Nyame to the point where she can’t work anymore. Last week, she made an agonized decision to close the school - only 18 orphans will remain there - and I was struck by how few people outside Abosamso knew what Nyame had done for more than 20

years. Nyame is one of Metroland Media Toronto’s Urban Heroes for 2017. On our website, you can meet other heroes we’re going to honour next month, including Nasser Rad, who couldn’t afford a car after he arrived in Canada as an Iranian refugee; now, he gives cars away to people who need a break. José Alberto Flores, vice-principal of a Catholic secondary school in Bloor West Village, buys breakfasts for students who can’t afford it, bringing the food to class. "Each student has a story," he says. Sharon Nyarko is a hero too. The University of Toronto Scarborough student, who’s been depressed, made a short film, Beyond Words, to chal-
lenge misconception around mental illness and get people talking. The needs Urban Heroes address are different, but all make the decision to do good. Sometimes it’s because of their faith, and sometimes because they recognize people around them are human beings who need help. They didn’t seek this recognition. We know them because friends nominated them, or readers voted for them online. You don’t have to be a movie star or famous athlete to change people’s lives. The heroes among us prove that. International Noise Benchmarking and Best Practices Report Launch
NEW LOCATION:
Join us on September 27, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Toronto Congress Centre, 650 Dixon Road, Etobicoke, ON, M9W 1J1
for our Community Environment & Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) meeting for the release of our Noise Management Program Benchmarking and Best Practices Study. What is CENAC?
Why is this important?
CENAC is a forum for discussion between the community and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) on matters relating to aircraft noise and the environmentally responsible operation of Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Toronto Pearson serves Canada’s largest and fastest-growing metropolitan area. The GTAA is committed to managing and reducing the impact of our operations and is reviewing a range of ambitious targets and actions to reduce the impact on GTA residents. Our updated five-year Noise Management Action Plan will be released this winter following a year of detailed study and consultations. Understanding international best practices is an important step in the development of this plan.
What can you expect to learn? In 2016, the GTAA hired UK aviation consultant Helios to undertake a Noise Management Program Benchmarking and Best Practices study. The study looked at 11 areas of noise management at 26 comparator airports around the world to identify potential new programs to be adopted at Toronto Pearson. This is the release of the report’s findings. There will be opportunities to speak with experts, including Toronto Pearson staff. This meeting is not focused on decisions around runway usage.

Leslieville men’s shelter expected to open in December Salvation Army initially planned to open 60-bed facility this month JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Those seeking a warm place to lay their head during the coldest months of the year need not lose hope. The Hope Shelter, a 60bed facility for adult men originally slated to open this month at 29/29A Leslie St., between Queen Street East and Eastern Avenue, is still on track to open its doors, albeit a little later than expected, said Bradley Harris, the Salvation Army’s executive director of Toronto housing and homeless supports. "Two things impacted the September opening
and it all comes down to the construction and renovation we’re doing with the building," Harris shared during a recent interview. For starters, he said the wet summer created some "challenges," notably significant ponding near the future shelter. This required the Salvation Army to undertake some much-needed foundation work on the building, which previously housed a lithographic printing business. The rain also revealed additional roof issues. "It hadn’t been attended to in some time," said Harris. "Because of the wet weather, we learned there was more work than we originally thought and as with all renovations ’things happen’," he said. "We’re not anticipating any further delays and we’re working with the revised timelines we’ve

well as the set-up of overnight areas and office spaces. Harris said initially the goal was to open the 24/7 facility in September,
however that date was pushed back to the end of October due to the amount of work needed to finish the job. Now, it looks like the

shelter won’t open until Dec. 1 at the earliest. "Obviously, we want to be set up and operational before the cold weather hits," he said. The Salvation Army is now in the process of organizing the staff for the new shelter, which is expected to run at capacity shortly after its opens. Harris said that while the new shelter would be a place for homeless men to spend the night, the ultimate goal is to connect guests with the supports and services they need to get properly housed and keep a roof over their head. The Christian church and international charitable organization is planning to host an open house of its new Leslieville facility for the community before it opens. A date for this event has yet to be set. A grand opening event for the new shelter is also in the works.

If we all wish to age well, we need to be aware of not only changes in our general health and well-being, but also about those conditions which are prevalent amongst the senior community and which may impact us in one way or another. Far too often, we dismiss changes in either ourselves or a loved one’s behaviour as simply slowing down or having a bad day, but often these signs are symptomatic of bigger issues which need to be investigated thoroughly. Memory loss, for example, is often incorrectly regarded as a normal part of the aging process. In reality, however, it could be an indicator of the presence of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. In fact, as our population ages, more and more Canadians will be impacted by the disease. By 2038, it is estimated that 1.13 million Canadians will suffer from dementia, up from the approximate 500,000 that are suffering from
As the number of Canadians living with dementia increases so too does the need for public education and both professional and family caregivers. Like cancer, this disease is likely to leave no family untouched and we all need to educate ourselves on the risks, prevention techniques, treatment and support options that are available to anyone who is afflicted with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. To help raise awareness and provide access to local public education programs, Home Instead Senior Care is asking members of the Beaches community to participate in the organization’s Alzheimer’s Learning Day on September 26. With September being World Alzheimer’s Month, it’s the perfect time to learn, educate and share knowledge around Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. To participate in Alzheimer’s learning day you can simply dedicate 5, 30 or 60 minutes of your time to reading an online article, taking an e-learning class or
attending an online webinar hosted by Home Instead. By undertaking this pledge to learn more, we can all become better at recognizing the risks, understanding the methods of prevention and being able to identify the needs of those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. There are many firms working diligently and tirelessly on the research and development of treatments and an overall cure, but Home Instead Senior Care has taken the lead in educating and providing people of all ages with resources on understanding and caring for people with dementia based on their own hands-on experience with programs like Alzheimer’s Learning Day. For more information about Home Instead Senior Care’s Alzheimer’s Learning Day and other resources related to Alzheimer’s or dementia, visit AlzLearn.ca or call 416-698-1384. Hearing aids can improve your hearing and your life
FREE
Hearing Aid Trial
“ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. The right hearing aid could help you improve your comprehension.
Today’s hearing aids are small and discreet with innovative features that can make a tremendous difference in how you hear and how you participate in life. The newest hearing solutions open up a world of sound that you may be missing out on. They also bring additional benefits like easy on-the-go connectivity to smart phones, televisions, music players and the Internet. When you have hearing loss, fewer sounds reach your brain. To make sense of these sounds, your brain has to work harder to understand speech and focus on what is important. Today’s hearing aids do this automatically so you enjoy a richer, more natural hearing experience. You may notice a decrease in listening effort and an increase in your ability to remember what people say to you, even in challenging listening environments like restaurants and social gatherings.
