I CAN DO IT: Mason Wismer, 8, learns how to take apart a bicycle and put it back together during the first annual ‘Make-It’ Fair Saturday at Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School.

The Great Escape celebrated Sunday A day dedicated to honouring the 70th anniversary of The Great Escape, a true story about a group of 80 Commonwealth airmen who, during the Second World War, escaped from a German prisoner of war camp,

takes place Sunday. The festivities, which run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Fox Theatre, 2236 Queen St. E., include a screening of the 1963 Hollywood film, The Great Escape, which was inspired by

the 1950 book of the same name by author Paul Brickhill. Well-known Canadian historian and author, Ted Bariss, has recently penned a new book on the topic called The Great Escape: A Canadian Story. Barris

will attend the event and give a presentation. The Great Escape is of local interest as late Beach resident Wally Floody, also known as ‘The Tunnel King’, was the key >>>KEY, page 10

Red Door Family Shelter is holding an emergency community meeting this Monday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ralph Thornton Centre, 765 Queen St. E. The non-profit is facing an uncertain future as its longtime home at 744 Queen St. E., just west of Logan Avenue, in Leslieville is currently in receivership. A new developer has expressed interest in purchasing the property and building condos. However, a Red Door family shelter isn’t currently part of those plans. The Red Door Family Shelter, which has administrative offices on Carlaw Avenue and a second shelter for women and children fleeing violence at an undisclosed location, hopes to continue operating a family shelter from its Leslieville location. For more than 30 years, The Red Door has operated a shelter for homeless families serving more than 500 families each year. On any given night, at least half of the facility’s 106 beds are occupied by children. Those who can’t attend the April 7 meeting can show their support by signing a petition at www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/save-the-red-door. Visit www.reddoorshelter.ca/ save-the-red-door for details about the campaign.
