Actor takes on role of father in Emily’s Piano JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Beach resident Christopher Sawchyn said he is thrilled to be taking on the many challenges of performing the role of “The Dad” in the upcoming theatrical production of Emily’s Piano.

Based on the children’s novel, La boîte à bonheur, by Charlotte Gingras, the 75-minute play explores depression, divorce and the healing power of hope.

The story is told through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl named Emily, who is trying to cope with the breakup of her family. The play revolves around her search for her family’s beloved piano.

tion, Sawchyn’s is a physical one filled with lots of drama as well as humour.

“My role is great in that ‘The Dad’ is kind of seen as the bad guy

through Emily’s point of view,” Sawchyn, a veteran multi-disciplinary artist who lives near Kingston Road and Queen Street East, said during a Tuesday afternoon interview between rehearsals. “With a marriage that is rocky and a wife who is depressed, he really struggles with his feelings.”

Sawchyn said he knew he wanted to be an actor since he was a teen.

After completing high school, he went on to attend university in Edmonton before moving to Toronto where he spent the next three years studying theatre at George Brown College. He has worked as a full-time performer since 1994.

Sawchyn said he’s enjoying playing the role of a stereotypical, stoic Quebecois father who doesn’t show

much emotion and who isn’t quite sure of how to deal with the upsetting situations he must face.

“It’s been challenging getting behind the skin of this guy,” said Sawchyn, who recently received a best supporting actor award at NYC’s Macabre Faire Film Fest for his portrayal of a transgender woman in the feature film, Blood Empires. Sawchyn is also the co-founder of The Specials sketch comedy company. His next project is the third installment of his solo vaudevillian-style cabaret series, Christopher Sawchyn Sings! in May. Sawchyn teaches theatre arts at Seneca, York and the Toronto Film School.

Toronto is a fantastic city! You can do virtually anything your heart desires, and with today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto – Metroland Media Toronto’s newest online Arts & Entertainment portal – you can start enjoying so much of what this great city has to offer – all from a communityfocused perspective.

Toronto was recently ranked the best place to live according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a unit of The Economist magazine. There were 50 global cities included. Granted, Toronto has ranked high in similar studies before, so it’s no surprise the city welcomes more than 25 million visitors annually, spending more than $5 billion and more than $1.5 billion on food and entertainment.

However, what many tourists our view understand we Torontonians sometimes overlook, even take Lots to see, do, for granted.

Despite Toronto being conread, hear and sidered one of the most livable cities in the world, life for the taste in T.O. millions of people who call this city home is ‘wake up, go to work, come home, repeat’. There is so much more to hear, see, read, taste, and do from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to Lake Ontario, Parkdale to the Beach.

With today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto (www. insidetoronto.com/EnjoyToronto), we’ve taken a look at what was missing from the pages of the local media, and online.

What we discovered is there are so many amazing stories about Torontonians starting a band that suddenly becomes huge (Broken Social Scene comes to mind), or a filmmaker who grew up in the city and is now world-renowned (David Cronenberg for one) or an award-winning author who started filling pages in Hogtown (Margaret Atwood for instance). We took all those great stories and put them under one roof – Enjoy Toronto.

When visiting the site, make sure to click around the various sections – Hear, See, Read, Taste, and Do – and get an idea of some of the events, movies, music, and stories told by Torontonians, both new and old.

Big Data monitoring of Toronto traffic comes with a price One of the big problems that Mayor John Tory came into office promising to solve was also one of the most ubiquitous: traffic.

He started out strong and without even a council vote behind him, rallying city staff and law enforcement into a blitz against illegal parking during rush hour, and very quickly claimed at least anecdotal success: people were telling him their commutes were getting easier. It was harder to quantify, though, because as it turns out the city doesn’t really do much to reliably monitor the intensity of rush hour traffic.

It looks as though that’s about to change.

On April 7, Tory announced the city would be looking at high-tech ways to monitor traffic density, pedestrian congestion, bicycle efficiency, all of that. How? Two words: Big Data.

This, of course, is a simple phrase for a com-

david nickle the city plexity of information about all of us provided by everything from bank transactions to web page visits, but principally, in this case, by our smartphones.

Where we are The idea is to use the smartphone networks that help us use our navigation functions to tell city traffic planners where exactly we are, and what it’s likely we’re doing.

So whether it’s a crowd of us trying to decipher the scramble intersection at Yonge and Dundas, or a line of us trying to manage a left turn at Yonge and Sheppard, city traffic planners will have a line on it.

For the purpose of traffic management, it’s a powerful tool. Unchecked, it is a privacy nightmare.

Of course, Big Data is unchecked. Edward Snowdon, currently hiding in Russia, provided evidence of just how unchecked it is. Huge amounts of information about our private lives are neatly filed in NSA (National Security Agency) computers in the United States.

Almost as much is in the hands of Google and facebook and even of the developers of games about angry birds, and those little flashlight apps on our smartphones.

We signed the end user agreement on that infor-

mation a long time ago and barely realized it.

Given that, maybe it’s worth it to allow a little more information about our whereabouts to be collected and collated, so the city can manage its traffic light energy grid more efficiently and keep streetcars running more effectively.

It is naïve, however, to expect Toronto will be able to access that kind of service without giving up quite a lot of the presumed privacy of its citizens and particularly as the city engages private sector data mining firms to do the work, it’s unreasonable to think the best ones will limit their measurements to the amount of time it takes to drive the Don Valley Parkway from Queen Street to Eglinton Avenue at four on a Tuesday.

Everything has a price.

Eastern Commerce hosts Hip Hop education event ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com What do spaceships and Drake have in common?

Most people would reply nothing, but a team of educators from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and communities across the city beg to differ.

The school board recently held its inaugural two-day Hip Hop Education STEMposium, dubbed ‘Free Your Mind’, at Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute and the next day at Central Technical School.

The event assembled more than 450 teachers and students from grades 6 and up from 30 TDSB schools to experience a fusion of hip hop music and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Lead organizer Ramon St. Vincente believes hip hop and STEM go hand-in-hand.

“We’re looking at the connections between Hip Hop culture and STEM fields,” he said.

“STEM is about problem solving, inquiry, asking questions and finding solutions. So we’re exploring these concepts through a medium that young people are often very

familiar with, hip hop culture.”

Referred to as a “platform for transformative education,” Free Your Mind consisted of 18 student workshops and four teacher workshops. These workshops, designed to demonstrate relations and applications between STEM and hip hop

music, taught students and teachers familiar concepts in fresh, engaging ways.

“Let’s look at making music or making beats in hip hop,” St. Vincente said. “In the beat production workshop, students use software, computers and technol-

Keynote speaker Dr. Christopher Emdin was invited from Columbia University. Emdin has been behind several educational initiatives in the United States directed at engaging students in science through hip hop and rap music.

As he spoke to more than 400 students, Eastern Commerce’s assembly hall was silent with gazes fixed on the Emdin’s presentation that melded freestyle rhyming, inspirational stories and pragmatic explanations for why students should pursue science.

Emdin also offered a workshop to teachers about pedagogy, where the TDSB educators maintained a similar silence and deep focus on his every word. Free Your Mind was the result of collaborative work from the TDSB Equity Department, where St. Vincente is an instructional leader.

About five years ago, O’Neil, a former social worker and addiction counsellor who worked as a pool installer/ serviceman, was forced to vacate his home. A neighbour gifted him with a copy of the children’s book, Harold and the Purple Crayon, filled with well wishes. In his final years, O’Neil was basically homeless and transient. “It was such a sad story at the end of his life,” Lois said.

It’s only been a few days since she posted about the statue on social media but the response has been “overwhelming.”

Upset about her brother’s decision to sell the piece, Lois is looking to find the purchaser or someone who knows that person and buy it back for as much as three times the sale price.

Lois even went as far as to order a similar statue and try to paint it the same colours but it just wasn’t the same.

“It’s not his,” said Lois, who said she deeply misses her brother and feels the statue

Neighbours wondering about an increase in police activity near Dundas Street East and Jones Avenue in Leslieville recently, now have answers about what was going on in their community.

On Tuesday morning, police held a press conference at their downtown headquarters to discuss the arrest of a 43-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault with a weapon, kidnapping and forcible confinement investigation.

In v e s t i g a t o r s re p o r t on Tuesday, March 31, a 27-year-old female sex-trade worker was approached by a man near Sherbourne and Shuter streets. Police said they “engaged in a business transaction”.

The man then allegedly produced a firearm and brought the woman to his home near Dundas Street East and Jones Avenue. He then reportedly threatened her with a handgun, bound her with duct tape and handcuffs and prevented her from leaving for five days.

During this time, the sus-

pect also allegedly sexually assaulted the woman with a weapon multiple times.

“It appears through investigation that she was targeted, that he has some form of ritualistic actions involved in the crime as well,” said Insp.

Joanna Beaven-Desjardins of the Toronto Police Services’ (TPS) sex crimes unit, during the press conference.

“It appears that he does target sex trade workers. I have no information that he has targeted before, but given the nature of the crime, there could be indication that he has.”

The victim was able to escape to the front porch on Sunday, April 5. A passerby heard her calls for help and contacted police. She was taken to hospital, but is now out and in good condition.

The man, who is originally from Timmins, ON, but has lived in the city for a decade and is known to police, fled the scene but was apprehended the next day.

Rejean Harmel Perron of Toronto was arrested on Monday, April 6.

He has been charged with one count each of sexual assault with a weapon, kidnapping, forcible confinement and assault.

Perron had an April 7 court appearance.

Police believe there may be more victims.

Help the ‘Y’ build its green roof

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The Cooper Koo YMCA promises to bring plenty of social and fitness activities to the rapidly changing Canary District. Before it opens, however, the community has a unique chance to help shape its future.

The upcoming Y is looking for volunteers to help install its 30,000-square-foot green roof, the design for which is expected to be revealed in the near future.

The roof was designed with plenty of community stakeholder input. Local residents and groups were first asked what features they would like to see incorporated into the green roof design and then asked to choose their favourite out of four proposed plans online.

“We had a two-stage survey and held consultations in the community to see what people wanted,” said Sarah Beldick, Cooper Koo YMCA assistant general manager.

“Now we’re hoping to have a final report back in the next week or two.”

Some details about the green roof are known. It will consist of some 20,000 pieces of drought-resistant native plants and 10,000 square feet of usable space, including walkways, water features and seating. It will feature a large open space for classes and it will be accessible.

“At the YMCA, we see green roofs as one piece of our sustainability plan,” Beldick said.

“It will decrease our carbon footprint and decrease (rainwater) runoff while giving us the opportunity to invite the community to come in, engage and connect with us and with each other.”

The green roof will also save the Cooper Koo YMCA money in the long run, reducing air conditioning bills and decreasing the costs of roof maintenance.

Beldick noted the YMCA of Greater Toronto has experience in this area.

“At the Central YMCA (on Grosvenor Street), the roof was converted to a green roof when it was time to (repair) it,” she said. “People love it there and we think they’ll love it here.”

The green roof will provide an opportunity for health and

fitness and camp programs while serving as a natural oasis in downtown Toronto.

Volunteering on the build will give people a chance to contribute to their community while learning about green roofs and their benefits by working alongside designers who are well-versed in creating such spaces.

Of course, being in the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Athletes’ Village poses its own unique challenges, particularly when it comes to security. The roof’s building is slated to take place from April 27 through May 22, weather permitting, and volunteers can offer to pitch in as many days as they like, with a few caveats.
