In honour of the Year of Sport in Canada, Heritage Toronto, the Riverdale Historical Society and the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation hosts a heritage plaque unveiling event commemorating St. Matthew’s Lawn Bowling Club in Riverdale Saturday. The event, which also includes a pop-up museum, is set to begin at noon at St. Matthew’s Lawn Bowling Clubhouse, 450 Broadview Ave. The pop-up museum, which will feature trophies won by the club and other sports memorabilia, will run from noon to 2 p.m. Visit www.heritagetoronto. org for details. East-end church to sponsor Syrian family JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The members of an Anglican congregation in the heart of Riverdale are putting their faith into action. With reports of unimaginable
living conditions Syrian refugees have faced in the last two years as a result of civil war and more recently attacks from a terrorist organization, members of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church at 135 First Ave said they felt compelled to do something to
help. Last fall, more than a dozen members of the congregation formed a committee and started the process of collecting upward of $30,000 to sponsor a Syrian refugee family to Canada this year.
The committee has been meeting on a regular basis to discuss how it will help the family once it arrives in the country. While the Canadian government has pledged its financial >>>SYRIAN, page 8
