help.

Last fall, more than a dozen members of the congregation formed a committee and started the process of collecting upward of $30,000 to sponsor a Syrian refugee family to Canada this year.

The committee has been meeting on a regular basis to discuss how it will help the family once it arrives in the country.

Leslieville resident pens songs for Brantwood: 1920-2020 JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Leslieville-based musician and performer Anika Johnson had a ball composing music and lyrics for Brantwood: 1920-2020, a unique and ambitious audience-participation musical being staged in a vacant Oakville high school slated for redevelopment.

Johnson, along with her sister Britta and fellow music composer/ lyricist Bram Gielen, was charged with creating songs featuring music from a 100-year period for the twohour long show.

“It was a massive undertaking, but what made it so fun creatively is that I got to write music for every decade,” she said during a recent interview.

Johnson and her sister were responsible for creating music and songs from the 1940s, 1960s, 1970s and 1990s as well as the 2000s and 2010s.

“As a team, we wanted it all to

sound like pop music teenagers would be listening to at that time; to really represent their identity,” she said. “It required a lot of research, but it was so fun.”

For the 1970s, Johnson composed rock and disco numbers, while she came up with a hip hop/dance track

à la Ariana Grande for the 2010 decade.

Presented by Sheridan College’s Canadian Music Theatre Project, Brantwood: 1920-2010 runs April 14 to May 3.

Co-created/directed by Mitchell Cushman and Julie Tepperman, the ambitious show features a cast of 42 actors portraying some 100 roles in 200 scenes with 40 musical numbers in 11 separate story lines.

“It’s an extremely exciting concept,” Johnson said.

“Brantwood is an extremely innovative way to create theatre; to engage the audience in this way.

It’s impossible to be bored.”

For the play, audience members gather at Sheridan College and are then transported by school bus to a nearby high school and become the final graduating class of the fictional Brantwood High School and return to their alma mater for a reunion before the school closes for ever.

Brantwood: 1920-2020 features a storyline for every decade of the

school’s history as well as a look into the future. Spectators are free to decide what decade they’d like to follow as they wander throughout the school.

Tickets are available for purchasing by visiting http://tickets.sheridancollege.ca Johnson, who was raised in Stratford, ON, but has called Toronto home for more than a decade, grew up in a home filled with music and the arts.

Her mother, Holly Shephard, plays the trumpet, while her late father, Jerry Johnson, was a composer who also played the trombone.

Her sister Britta is also a music composer, while her other sibling, Eliza, is an opera singer.

“It runs in the blood,” said Johnson, a Ryerson University theatre graduate who currently works as a freelance composer, actor, performer, singer and dancer.

This summer, her music will be appearing in the Fringe Festival production of Summerland, which

was commissioned by the Wexford School for the Performing Arts.

Among other things, she’s also in the process of composing music with her sister for the October 2015 production of Jacob’s Tutu and the Hooded Fang by Young People’s Theatre.

Over the years, Johnson has also performed in more than 15 countries and has had her original work featured in festivals in Canada and abroad. Along with her writing partner, Barb Johnston, she’s also created five original musicals. She also regularly performs as a founding member of ‘Wannabe: The Spice Girls Tribute Band’.

Recognition of community service a potential win-win

olunteer recognition: it’s important, but doesn’t need to be expensive.

As we’re in the midst of National Volunteer Week, many organizations across the country that rely on volunteer efforts are busy acknowledging those efforts.

And for good reason. According to Statistics Canada, 12.7 million Canadians volunteered for nearly two billion hours in 2013. That’s a lot of work being put into making our communities stronger.

Though it may seem counterintuitive – as volunteering tends to be a selfless act – recognition is nevertheless important. According to Volunteer Canada, studies show that volunteer retention rates are linked to recognition.

So what are organizations and causes to do?

Resources are understandably our view limited. Yet the time and expertise of volunteers are critical cogs to getting jobs done.

Thank a One recent study, published by Volunteer Canada, suggests volunteer or there’s reason for optimism. The become one study entailed a pair of online surveys – one for volunteers and another for non-profit organizations. There were 379 responses.

According to the organization’s 2013 National Volunteer Recognition Study, the ways people want to be recognized tend to be the most cost-effective ones – such as “being thanked on an ongoing, informal basis.” Least-preferred methods included items like banquets and formal gatherings.

“Few volunteers want to be thanked in public ways,” states the Key Findings section. “But they do want to know the impact of their contribution.”

So here’s a challenge: if you’re an organization, take this week as an opportunity to review your recognition practices and get to know your volunteers a little better. Engaging your volunteer base may spark conversations and ideas that can be of mutual benefit.

If you’re a volunteer, don’t be afraid to ask how your efforts made a difference. Finally, if you’re not already a volunteer in some capacity, consider becoming one. The average contribution in Canada ranges from two to four hours per week, according to Statistics Canada. It may not be about the recognition, but the benefits of meeting new people, learning a new skill and contributing to your community (a key point in the Volunteer Canada survey). Council only has two choices when it comes to future of Gardiner Expressway Ah, what a relief! Councillor Jaye Robinson and Mayor John Tory and, with any luck a voting majority of Toronto council, are going to end the debate over the Gardiner Expressway’s future once and for all, and will do so by the summer.

“This is a once-in-alifetime decision and we need to make sure we get it right,” said Robinson, in her capacity as chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.

Robinson said that at a news conference on Tuesday, made necessary by a bit of reporting by Oliver Moore at The Globe and Mail, about certain leaked details of an environmental assessment report looking at options for the crumbling elevated expressway.

By now (as you read this) the report will be out and the first public consultation on its contacts will have

david nickle the city occurred. But as I write this, I have only Moore’s word on its content: Robinson and city staff would not confirm the most likely option, a ‘hybrid’ that reroutes part of the expressway at ground level, would cost about $900 million.

That’s a lot of money, but it would provide a lot of benefit to a lot of people: first and foremost, the developers at First Gulf who are planning a massive redevelopment of the Unilever site. The development would create thousands of jobs, and generate millions of dollars in revenue to be put toward Mayor Tory’s SmartTrack plan – the surface rail project that would run right through the First Gulf

project.

Given that, council really only has two choices on its plate: either tear down the whole highway as earlier suggested, or go with this hybrid model.

This will not only help with vehicular congestion, but political congestion too.

For more than a decade, the future of the Gardiner Expressway has been a political pinch point for the left and right on council.

The left has, broadly, favoured the simple removal of the elevated highway.

That option dovetails with the views of late urban planning guru Jane Jacobs and others, in that it would open up the city’s waterfront to pedestrians.

The broadly-defined right on council, meanwhile, has put considerable political energy into maintaining the thing – on

the largely correct theory that right-of-centre voters from the suburbs feel that the expressway there is a kind of entitlement, even as every spring and summer it flings pieces of itself onto the hoods of cars travelling below it.

These and other engineering conundrums surrounding the Gardiner have thus been subsumed in an existential fight between left and right on council for the course of the debate.

The future of the Gardiner itself has always been something that could wait. But not anymore.

The injection of First Gulf might be what it takes to break the standoff between the Jane Jacobs and Ayn Rand sets on council.

Here’s hoping.

Those were the words of Jay Arrington, a curriculum leader for Developmentally Delayed (DD) programs at Monarch Park Collegiate Institute where on Wednesday, April 8 athletes from schools across Toronto came to square off in a round robin tournament of wheelchair hockey.

And if the Paralympic Games and the upcoming Parapan Am Games have taught us anything, it’s not to underestimate the skill and endurance of athletes with disabilities.

The six teams from across the Toronto District School Board were prepared and anxious to show off their abilities in front of crowds of Monarch Park students.

The annual tournament brought teams from Central Etobicoke High School, Drewry Secondary School, Sunny View Junior & Senior Public School, Monarch Park Collegiate Institute, Sir William Osler High School, York Humber High School and Alexander Stirling Public School.

Central Etobicoke and Drewry acted as a combined team to bring the total to six.

Monarch Park has hosted the venue for the tournament for the last seven years.

The tournament itself grew out of an initiative to involve students with disabilities in athletics 25 years ago.

“They’ve been practising every week, preparing for this day,” Arrington said. “The students take it very seriously, all the athletes take it very seriously and our school takes

it very seriously.”

“We can get a little isolated in special ed. sometimes; it’s tricky to get around, but the opportunity that exists for these kids in all these schools to come together on a day like this, it’s a really incredible thing,” he added.

Students competed in round robin matches to determine the first-place match.

Monarch Park’s West Gym shook with cheers of celebration as the trophy and medals were awarded to players. The tournament awards a trophy to the first place team, a medal for the team MVP, a medal for the tournament MVP and ribbons for those in second and third.

“It feels really nice to demonstrate our ability to work as a team to win this championship,” said Monarch hockey player Keenan Ellis, 15. “We’ll try our best to win it again next year.”

Funds for the tournament are collected through fundraising initiatives at Monarch Park. While Sunny View’s free bus system allows the students to reach Monarch Park to participate.

Throughout the school year, students train under coaches every Wednesday after their lunches under the requirement of keeping their grades up.

Syrian refugee family could be arriving within months >>>from page 1 support to refugees for six months, sponsors are required to raise enough money to support the family for the remainder of the year.

“The fundraising is a huge aspect, but what’s to come next is even bigger. It’s a huge undertaking,” said Kathryn Gray, who heads St. Matthew’s Refugee Initiative Committee.

The church is working with the Anglican United Refugee Alliance, a charitable organization that helps churches sponsor refugees.

In recent weeks, they’ve submitted the application to receive a Syrian refugee family. The call could come any time and the family may arrive in Canada within the next two months.

The church’s refugee committee is now turning its attention to the development of a resettlement plan, which will include where the family will live, where the kids will go to school and who in the congregation will be responsible for what, Gray said.

The church community will also help the family with its immigration and doctor’s appointments as well as English classes.

Despite being on its own, St. Matthew’s, which John said typically draws 65 to 70 people to its weekly services, has already raised $16,000 – enough money to apply to receive a United Nations-certified refugee family currently living in a UN camp for displaced persons.

“It’s been great and we have more fundraisers on the horizon. We’re rolling,” Gray said.

The committee’s first fundraiser was a craft and bake sale in December followed by a Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner and silent auction in February.

Gray has spent countless hours researching what is involved in sponsoring a refugee family.

Along with the other members of the refugee committee, she’s also been campaigning – albeit unsuccessfully – to find another church to partner with.

“Ordinarily, churches don’t do this on their own because it’s such a big responsibility,” she said. “Several churches have been interested, but they didn’t have the leadership backing.”

The fundraiser will feature the Lansdowne Ceili Band with Maureen Mulvey-O’Leary.

Admission, which includes dance lessons, is $10 for adults and $5 for children. All profits will be directed to the refugee family.

The church has also received a

number of donations from parishioners, including refugee committee member Aubrey Duffy who recently completed the 88-kilometre Damascus to Beirut fundraising run in Toronto and donated the proceeds to the cause.

Children at the church have also been doing their part to raise money for the refugee family, Gray noted.

“We’ve now raised enough money now that we’re ready to take the next step,” she said, adding anyone interested in making a donation or holding a fundraiser is welcome to get in touch.

As a result of the refugee initiative, the members of St. Matthew’s have become closer.

Many parishioners have come forward to share their stories about starting over in another country, while others feel inspired to do what they can to help the refugee family.

“I’m pleased to have the opportunity to look outside my own life and it’s great to share this experience with my kids,” Gray said.

Winning terminal design both practical and iconic RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s redesigned ferry terminal is one step closer to becoming reality.

Waterfront Toronto announced the winning entry Friday for a juried international design competition it organized to seek ideas for the future look of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and surrounding Harbour Square Park.

The winner was Harbour Landing – a joint submission of architecture firms West 8, KPMB and Greenberg and Associates.

Their design envisions a new wavy-shaped covering for the terminal made of wood and topped by indigenous greenery, which doubles as an elevated parkland space, resulting in “perfectly framed” views of Lake Ontario and the ferries coming to and from the Toronto Islands.

Jury chair Donald Schmitt said the design took home top honours as much for its practicality as its “iconic” design.

“The combination of simplicity and the shaping of space, we thought it was remarkable,” said Schmitt during a short ceremony held at Waterfront Toronto’s headquarters inside the 20 Bay St. office building.

“We really felt it was a park design that created a sense of repose, a great green living room for the city.”

Architect Ken Greenberg said the inspiration for the Harbour Landing design came from seeking to turn the concrete ferry terminal and surrounding industrial lands from an “introverted” location to one which proudly proclaims itself as a premier destination in the city.

“This is the moment we hope to be truly extroverted and to welcome our relationship with the harbour... and make a powerful statement of the optimism of our city,” Greenberg said.

The task now turns to creating a master site plan and securing governmental approvals and funding for the project, which will be

built in phases. Both those hurdles will require approvals from city council.

Waterfront CEO John Campbell argued public support for the work – as evidenced by some 1,200 pieces of public feedback made on the shortlisted designs – makes a strong argument for convincing elected officials to spend the money to transform the terminal into something truly befitting of its namesake Layton.

“Projects like these show people change could happen,” Campbell said.

To r o n t o Ce n t re - Ro s e d a l e Councillor Pam McConnell suggested funding for completing the terminal re-design could come from a variety of sources, including development charges, Section 37 funds, plus money coming directly from the private sector.

“Our job will be to find the money,” she said.

East-ender’s show begins cross-country tour It’s official. Leslieville’s Shelley Marshall is taking her awardwinning solo show Hold Mommy’s Cigarette: One woman’s story of an unfiltered life... on a cross-country tour.

Hold Mommy’s Cigarette takes the audience through the trials and tribulations of Marshall’s tumultuous life starting when her schizophrenic father killed himself on his birthday when she was just seven years old, to her own suicide attempt 16 years ago, to her present-day reality as a unabashed funny woman who has managed to rise above and turn her sadness into tremendous success.

To date, more than 2,000 people have seen the show.

Edgewood Health Network, the largest Canadian provider of adult mental health and addiction centres and outpatient offices, has come on board to support Marshall’s cross-country tour by “playing it forward.” The organization will be buying out opening nights of the show so the tickets may be given to those that would otherwise not be able to attend.
