Toronto police officers investigate after human remains were found behind Charlies Meat and Seafood Store at 383 Broadview Ave. at Simpson Avenue on Tuesday. Police said the remains are those of woman with light skin.

Woman’s remains found in Riverdale joANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Toronto police believe remains located late Tuesday near Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East are those of an adult woman. “We believe it is a female with light skin. … We’re treating as though this is a human being, a female,” said Det. Sgt. Terry Browne of the Toronto police

homicide squad shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday. “The investigation begins on how this individual ended up here.” Browne would not reveal exactly what part of the woman’s body was found, but did indicate it appears the death was “fairly recent” based on the condition of the remains. Toronto police were called to the rear of Charlies Meat and Seafood store, 383 Broadview

Ave. at Simpson Avenue, around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday for reports of unknown trouble. Once on scene, officers from 55 Division located a bag that appeared to contain some sort of remains. Employees from the butcher shop had made the discovery a short time earlier. Members of the Homicide, Forensics and Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear units were contacted. The

Coroner also attended the scene and removed the remains early Tuesday evening. Former Riverdale resident Ron Baird, who rented a garage on the same property from Charlie Cheung (the owner of Charlies Meat store) for more than a decade, came down from Pickering when he heard the news. “It’s pretty wild. It’s surreal,” he said. >>>POLICE, page 2

Earlier this week, General Mo t o r s o f C a n a d a L t d . announced it has completed the purchase of the east-end property, which is currently home to Cinespace Studios. General Motors plans on developing the site into office space, research and development facilities, GM vehicle sales and services including electric vehicle sales, and what it’s calling a “public experience centre” featuring innovations in mobility. In a release this week, Steve Carlisle, General Motors of Canada’s president and managing director, said the company is “very excited to be bringing GM Canada back into downtown Toronto with a future-oriented approach that will engage the community, universities, our customers and many other partners in the exciting transformations taking place in the automotive industry today. “Downtown Toronto will >>>GM, page 2
