For the last six months or so, restaurateur Robert Maxwell’s first duty of the day has been to clean a wad of spit off the front door of his Upper Beach eatery, The Beech Tree. “It doesn’t happen every night, but at least a few times a week. One week it was every night and then it didn’t happen for about a week and a half,” he said during a recent interview.

Dixon Avenue bike lane installed A new contra-flow bike lane has been installed on Dixon Avenue in the Beach. The new yellow bicycle lane allows cyclists to lawfully and safely cycle in both directions on Dixon Avenue, a one-way street, from Woodbine Avenue to Kingston Road. T h e we s t b o u n d t ra ve l lane between Kingston and Lockwood roads will remain one-way for drivers and cyclists. Those who want to cycle eastbound can now do so in the eastbound-only bicycle lane. Between Lockwood Road and Woodbine Avenue, the eastbound lane will remain one-way for drivers and cyclists, while the westbound-only bike lane will help cyclists connect more easily to Lockwood Road and Sarah Ashbridge Avenue.

“It just seems too regular to be a random thing... I know people spit, but this is our front door. It feels vindictive, like we’re being targeted.” Maxwell, who bought the 32-seat restaurant about a year and a half ago recently shared his concerns on social media. On April 21, the first-time restaurateur – who also lives in the area – posted a lengthy message on the facebook page for the Kingston Road Village >>>RESTAURANT, page 10

Wayfinding shared lane pavement markings have also been installed. These sharrows aim to help cyclists navigate the Dundas Street East bike lanes without having to cycle on busy arterial roads. This connection also includes a push-button crossing at Queen Street East where Lockwood Road becomes Sarah Ashbridge Avenue that directs cyclists to the push-button crossing to reach the multiuse trails south of Lake Shore Boulevard East. A community launch event is set for Sunday, May 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. Stay tuned for details.
