As the number of Canadians with Lyme disease continues to climb, Canada is developing a federal framework for dealing with the issue.

The framework will focus on guidelines for identifying and treating Lyme disease, tracking infection rates and their economic impact, and developing standardized educational

materials for public health providers.

In Ontario, Lyme disease is spread through bites from infected blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks. In May, Toronto Public Health held a press conference in Morningside Park to discuss the city’s growing blacklegged tick population and warn residents to protect from bites.

Two swimming events and two Olympic medals, so far, for Toronto east-end teenager Penny Oleksiak at Rio 2016.

On Sunday, she earned a silver medal in the 100-metre butterfly, one night after she anchored the Canadian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team to a bronze medal.

The individual silver medal for the 16-year-old Toronto resident, who finished up her Grade 10 year at Monarch Park Collegiate in June, marked Canada’s first individual female Olympic swimming medal since Marianne Limpert at Atlanta 1996 – four years before Oleksiak was born. It also marked the first Olympic medal of any kind for a Canadian woman in the butterfly event.

She is also the first Canadian woman to win two Olympic medals since Anne Ottenbrite did in 1984 in Los Angeles.

Her time of 56.46 seconds was also a world junior record, breaking her own record that she set in the preliminary round.

“I definitely don’t try to hold back but I think that last 10 metres you just have to put in everything else you have left because once the race is over you’re probably going to regret it if you don’t put everything else in it,” she said.

It didn’t immediately sink in she had earned silver.

“The first few seconds after I touched the wall I didn’t look back, I was just trying to catch my breath,” she said, in the COC media release. “I wasn’t even sure I medalled until I looked up and I saw the Canadian flags in the air around me. Getting to see that and then getting to see that you medalled is just an amazing feeling.”

She immediately looked for her parents and siblings who were all in the stands to watch her remarkable performance.

Prior to Monarch Park Collegiate, Oleksiak attended Glen Ames Senior Public School after previously attending Kew Beach Junior Public School.

On Saturday night, Oleksiak proved to be a world-class closer as Canada came through to capture the Olympic bronze medal in a historic women’s 4 x 100metre freestyle relay.

It marked Canada’s first

swimming relay medal since 1988, and first in that event since 1976.

Veterans Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., and Chantal Van Landeghem of Winnipeg, delivered a strong opening two legs at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

That left the job ending the nation’s 40-year Olympic medal drought in the event to Oleksiak and another 16-year-old, Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C. On the final lap, Oleksiak separated from the other bronze hopefuls, setting off a celebration on the pool deck as she touched the wall at three minutes, 32.89 seconds – a Canadian record.

Michelle Williams of North York, who swam in the morning qualifying, also earns Olympic bronze.

Oleksiak delivered a 52.72-second anchor leg after swimming her 100-m butterfly semifinal about a hour earlier.

“I wasn’t super-nervous because the other girls had

all done their job and got us in position,” Oleksiak said, in an interview posted on the Swimming Canada website.

“It (earning the bronze medal) is surreal because no one expected us to win a medal and now everyone is talking about it.”

Alison Oleksiak in an interview half a decade ago said the family are longtime beach residents.

“My husband has lived in the Beach for over 30 years, my parents and I for 20,” said Alison. “We moved 12 years ago from the east end of the Beach closer to the box and pool, so the kids could play shinny and swim.”

And she added.

“Great place to bring up kids!”

Oleksiak had one individual event remaining: the 100m freestyle with heats and semis on Wednesday and finals Thursday night.

On the path to understanding Lyme disease >>>from page 1 work, there was a public consultation in June 2015 and a conference in Ottawa this May. Jim Wilson, president of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation, was one of the conference chairs.

“I hope the end result will be that physicians recognize that Lyme disease is neither easy to diagnose, nor is it easy to treat,” said Wilson of the framework.

“I think the evidence that was presented (during the conference), and the evidence that is published in many different research papers, has shown that the testing protocol that we’ve been using (in Canada) over the past decades is not accurate. It will not cover all of the strains of bacteria that we know we have and they’re still discovering more.”

DIagNOsINg lYme DIsease Along with funding for more research, including human tissue study, Wilson hopes the framework will change how Lyme disease is diagnosed and treated.

“Tying the diagnosis to the patient having been in a known endemic area is foolhardy in a disease that’s transplanted randomly, so we hope that’s going to change,” he said. “Limiting the treatment to a specific period of time, three-to-four weeks of antibiotics for example, considering the evidence that was presented (at the conference) and the many research papers, that too must change. Doctors must be free to treat the patient based upon the symptoms.”

He also hopes diagnosis will stop being tied to people having a “bull’s eye” rash.

While Lyme literature notes most people with the disease develop the mark, Wilson said current research and his foundation’s experience indicate many people don’t develop any sort of rash at all.

Wilson wants transparency in the framework and people with Lyme disease to have a say in it.

“I just want to make sure that the patients and their experts are given the voice they deserve at the table where the policy decisions are made. We want to be engaged in the writing of policy, and not just token representation, and not just as reviewers of something that somebody else has written.”

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, said the province’s main focus

is helping people reduce the risk of getting Lyme disease.

“So we have a public that is more aware, more knowledgeable on ticks, on handling of ticks, on accessing their physician in a timely fashion,” he said. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure ... It’s really very much in the hands of the public, because they’re the ones that choose to get exposed, they’re the ones that choose to go see a doctor or not, and choose to ask about it, so we want them as knowledgeable as we can get them.”

Once the framework is released, the Ontario government will review it, see what it agrees with and ask questions about points of difference. “And to see then what kind of so-called federal-provincial-territorial conjoint activities can, or should, or would we do,” Williams said. “Or what can we do more in our own respective jurisdictions.”

To help, Ontario launched a public awareness campaign as part of its “Combating Lyme Disease Through Collaborative Action: Ontar io’s 10 Step Education and Awareness Plan” that was released in July.

Williams has seen “snippets and bits” of the federal framework, but noted it hasn’t been finalized, because some aspects are still being discussed.

He hopes it will help provinces and territories better understand how other parts of Canada approach the issue, and how it varies throughout the country where different strains of Lyme-disease-causing bacteria are found.

He wants a better picture of how many Ontarians may have been exposed to infected ticks, because monitoring is done through testing and doctors sometimes use preventative medicine instead of ordering tests.

Testing isn’t effective in the very early stages of infection, when medical intervention is thought to be most effective, because tests rely on antibodies that need time to build up.

Instead, doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics to keep a potential infection from setting in.

“We would like to document that a bit better, so we can understand the work that our primary care doctors are doing in that regard, so it’s part of our surveillance system,” Williams said.

He believes Ontario’s testing method is the best.

“We have a standardized one that we use, the same as CDC Atlanta and the other top-leading laboratories, it’s a two-stage one.

We’re continually looking at our testing to make sure we’re trying to standardize it with other leading centres, and we feel ours is the gold standard.”

He added, “We take (Lyme disease) very seriously, and we’re very concerned about it.”

The provincial government will continue its awareness campaign.

“We really want to make (the public) aware of what we are doing, that we want to do more of it, and want to do it better.” he said. “And keep raising that bar up on a prevention mode.”

Torontonians need to take precautions against Lyme disease

icks that carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease are confirmed to be in at least three Toronto locations, which should be a cause for concern but not panic among residents.

In the case of protecting ourselves from this disease, an ounce of prevention will go a long way.

Part of that includes knowledge about the causes of Lyme disease, its diagnosis and in what places to be especially careful – not just in Ontario but anywhere you might travel.

In today’s paper, we’re giving readers that valuable information.

Be aware that Toronto Public Health has identified Algonquin Island, Morningside Park and the Rouge Valley as city locations where blacklegged ticks (that carry Lyme disease) have been located.

In the case of Rouge Park, ticks have tested positive for the Lyme-disease-causing bacteria.

Take Diagnosing Lyme is a chalresponsibility lenge for the medical community, says Jim Wilson, the president for tick safety of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation.

His organization wants Canada’s testing for the disease changed as they do not consider it to be accurate or able to cover all the different strains of Lyme disease.

Wilson also says treatment plans need to be re-examined at the federal level, specifically the decision to treat for Lyme disease and the course of antibiotics used and for how long.

Canada is only now working on federal public health framework on dealing with Lyme disease. It’s been a long time coming on the federal level, but fortunately the Province of Ontario has been moving ahead on its own and putting its emphasis on reducing risk.

That’s a sound strategy by the province, but it will require a high level of public education and personal responsibility on the part of all residents.

“It’s really very much in the hands of the public, because they’re the ones that choose to get exposed, they’re the ones that choose to go see a doctor or not, and choose to ask about it, so we want them as knowledgeable as we can get them,” said Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health in an interview with Metroland Media Toronto.

Ten sure signs the Olympics are in full swing Here are 10 signs the Summer Olympics are in full swing: 1. TV announcers say “repechage” a lot. It flows so easily off their tongues you’re in awe. Hard as you try, you still can’t pronounce it properly after all these Olympics.

2. When heats are being contested in any sport, you scan each lane to see if a local athlete or team qualified. If you come up empty in your search, you quickly switch channels until you find a heat in which you have a rooting interest.

The semifinals and finals you tune in regardless of who’s involved, but when it comes to those preliminary heats it seems to take hometown faces and logos to keep you glued to your set.

3. Many of your favourite Olympic events have judges decide who wins or loses.

Alas, all too often, you don’t agree with their decision.

But after being mesmerized by a gymnastic routine and then having the judge give a much different score than you, you’re baffled. It doesn’t stop you from watching gymnastics, but you can’t help wish there was a system more in line with the non-judged events.

4. The Summer Games are a veritable athlonfest and Rio is no different. Pick an athlon any athlon and you’ll find it here. Each captivates in its own way, but the modern pentathlon is in a league of its own.

How can you not love an event that was created back in 1912, still proudly calls itself modern and nobody gets their shorts in a knot over it?

5. Many of the official sponsors differ from Summer Games to Summer Games, but two never change and they’re both back again in Rio. The Official Pickle: traffic congestion and the Official Excuse: lack of government funding.

6. It seems every newspaper headline during the Games has to be a play on words. “So-and-so swimmer makes a huge splash.”

“So-and-so gymnast jumps for joy.”

7. The Games always feature a blend of familiar veterans and the introduction to some exciting new stars.

For Canada, two of the former who come to mind are 33-year old soccer sensation Christine Sinclair and men’s doubles tennis standout Daniel Nestor.

Sinclair, the most accomplished Canadian soccer player of all-time, leads the women’s team and is in her third Olympics. Nestor is in his sixth. As for the

new Canadian kids on the block? First up is 16-yearold Penny Oleksiak who got a bronze medal Saturday and followed it up with a silver on Sunday. And she still has three events to go.

8. When an athlete or team from home wins a medal, you can’t help but get a tear in your eye.

9. If they get gold, it’s tears plural and you automatically rise for the playing of the national anthem.

Even if you’re just watching by yourself at home.

10. The Olympic mascot never fails to be a weirdlooking creature.

But darn if you don’t want to give it a hug.

Rio’s is named Vinicius.

He’s a big hit. So be prepared for a long wait.

And no shoving if you’re behind me. I plan to take my sweet time.

Social media campaign helps lead to arrest of assault suspect JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The power and pressure of social media has helped police arrest a man wanted in connection with a recent assault in the Upper Beach area.

On Aug. 3 around 1:30 a.m., life-long east-end resident Gregory Hewitt was allegedly assaulted by a man outside his parents’ home on Kingswood Road, just above Bracken Avenue.

At the time of the attack, Hewitt, 52, was returning home from moving his stuff to a nearby apartment.

Hours later, he put up a Facebook post with a photo of his bloodied face along with a photo he’d snapped of the suspect, and an appeal for help to locate the man he alleged did this to him. That post went viral.

“I know the power of social media. I just wanted this guy to get caught,” Hewitt, who works as a social media con-

sultant, said when asked why he decided to past about his ordeal on Facebook.

“What if it happened to someone else? I needed to share.”

As a result of the attack, Hewitt required dental surgery to remove a tooth that was shattered in the attack.

On Aug. 5, his dislocated and swollen jaw was wired shut to prevent further damage from the multiple jaw fractures he sustained during the attack.

Hewitt is now recovering at home but will likely be going in for jaw surgery in a couple of weeks.

In the days since the incident, a number of community members have come forward with offers of help to pay for his dental care and plastic surgery. Another neighbour offered his truck and trailer to Hewitt, while another area resident has put out a call out for donations of homecooked soups and smoothies as Hewitt is currently on an all-liquid diet.

“From a bad experience there has come lots of love, support and care. I’m beyond blown away,” said Hewitt, who despite what he’s been though in the past week said he’s still in good spirits.

“I just want to get back to my regular life.”

Hewitt’s good friend Andrea Webster has been helping him during this difficult time and posted updates and a thank you message on Facebook on his behalf.

“He’s so grateful. Greg wanted to thank everyone for helping him,” said Webster.

On Aug. 9, Christopher Robichaud turned himself in to 55 Division Station.

The 27-year old Toronto resident was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Toronto police thanked those who responded to the social media campaign and provided tips. Anyone with more information should call 55 Division officers at 416808-5500.

Torontonians will soon be able to check out the New7Wonders of the World without leaving the city’s east end.

A new public art project, which officially kicked off Aug. 5 and will run until Aug. 25, will see the often-tagged walls of seven commercial properties in East Toronto Chinatown transformed into colourful works of art depicting some of the world’s most remarkable sites.

Called Project Seven New Wonders of the World, the initiative is largely funded and organized by StreetARToronto (StART), which is working in partnership with the Toronto Parking Authority, 55 Division, and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce (East Toronto).

Throughout the month of August, a crew of more than 20 artists headed by Mike Kennedy will be painting

murals of Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), The Great Wall (China), The Taj Mahal (India), The Colosseum (Rome, Italy), Petra (Jordan), Chichen Itza ( Yucatán, Mexico), Machu Picchu (Cuzco Region, Peru).

The first two murals of Project Seven New Wonders of the World – Machu Picchu and The Taj Mahal – are currently in the process of being painted on walls east and west of the Green P parking lot at 665 and 651 Gerrard St. E. Other sites include 577, 585, 590 Gerrard St. E. and 318 and 349 Broadview Ave. Project Seven New Wonders of the World is essentially the successor of a neighbourhood beautification effort that took place in the community last fall called Project Picasso, which resulted in the removal of spray paint vandalism from local laneways as well as the creation of a large-scale mural on the brick wall at the back of the Green P parking lot on

Gerrard Street East, just west of Broadview Avenue.

A number of partners contributed to this Project Picasso including graffiti artist Mike Kennedy and his crew, who donated their services to the mural. Students from Riverdale Collegiate Institute (RCI) also gave of their time to help clean up the graffiti and prep the wall. Pupils from RCI also submitted Asian-inspired designs for the large piece.

A group of 12 students who will be attending Riverdale Collegiate in September are also involved in this summer’s project. On July 29, the teens helped prep three of the seven walls.

This time around, Kennedy has been retained as the project coordinator. Together with Jodi Callan, a project manager with StreetARToronto, he came up with the concept for Project Seven New Wonders of the World as well as determined which wall would best suit each design.

Paws in the Park set for the Beach The Toronto Humane Society is hosting its largest annual fundraising event, Paws in the Park, in the Beach this Sunday.

A long-running, free community event that raises funds for the Toronto Humane Society, Paws in the Park will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Woodbine Park, which is near Lake Shore Boulevard East and Coxwell Avenue.

JOB SUMMARY The District Service Representative is responsible for ensuring that all distribution products in their assigned geographic area are delivered in a timely and appropriate manner, and that delivery contractors are trained and provided with the necessary tools to complete their job efficiently.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES • Reporting to the Circulation Manager • Maintain your assigned area of responsibility, which will included a contracted carrier force and all houses within the boundaries that are assigned by the Circulation Supervisor.

• Ensure that all newspapers, inserts, and other distribution products are delivered in a timely manner. This includes working closely with the carrier force and when necessary could include delivery of down route(s).

• Recruit and train new carriers to ensure that all routes are covered and terminate contracts where appropriate. Maintain sufficient carrier waiting lists or establish new ones.

• Maintain all records concerning carriers and routes including financial records and complaints • Address customer concerns in a professional and timely manner while ensuring the concerns are resolved and the carriers are aware of the concerns • Investigate and resolve delivery issues where required • Drop off supplies to carriers including elastics and carrier bags as required.
