Cement pad Swinging the day away creating waves on waterfront ®
Rebecca Field rfield@metroland.com The Toronto Beaches Lions Club is making waves in Ashbridges Bay with the construction of a cement pad on the waterfront. The club leases the land from the Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation division, and installed the pad with Toronto WaveRunners back in May. After the club couldn’t receive a permit to sublet the cement landing pad to the WaveRunners from the city, as well as negative feedback from the community towards WaveRunners on Lake Ontario, they are now seeking approval to keep it in place. “I need you to fully understand that there’s no WaveRunners running out of Ashbridges Bay,” said Andy Buhot, secretary from the Beaches Lions Club. “Never was, never will be.” The club was planning to use the landing pad for a barge that would bring the WaveRunners out into the middle of the lake, instead of having them come directly into Ashbridges Bay. “From our perspective, we like the deck. We’re very happy that the deck is there,” said Buhot. “We’d like to keep the deck, and I think the city now is worried that with this deck, there is >>>PAD, page 6

Paints and pints for artists at local pub Phenomenon that has swept the U.S. now at Riverside’s An Sibin Pub on Wednesdays rebecca field rfield@metroland.com It’s happy hour and hundreds of workers will close up shop for the day, head down to a bar, grab a pint, and sit in front of an empty canvas with a paintbrush and unleash their inner creativity. It’s a phenomenon that has swept its way across the United States paint stroke by paint stroke, and finally found its away across the Canadian border and into Riverside’s An Sibin Pub. The pub will be hosting its first ever Paint Night on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m. Run by west enders Lexie Jelilyan and Jon Fedorsen, Paint Night has taken place across Toronto to sold out events for the past two months. An Sibin Pub’s will be the first in the Riverside area. “We’ve had some people dip their paintbrush in their beer a few times,” said Fedorsen. “We’ve had a few people drink their paint water. It happens, but it’s part of the fun.” The night involves inviting

groups of people to local bars where trained artists instruct attendees on how to complete the assigned painting of the night. “Jon and our artists will stand up in front of everybody and say ‘ok, here’s step by step
how to paint this painting,” said Jelilyan. “Everybody leaves happy, they all leave with a canvas.” Artists of all levels are invited to the events, and canvasses, paint and paint-
brushes are provided with the ticket. Each night has a specific painting assigned, and takes place at a different location across the city. “It’s a no-experiencerequired class,” said Jelilyan. “We get a few virtuosos who
happen to paint something that’s not what we’re doing. That’s great, we love to see that – it’s just whatever you want to do, you’re paying for your ticket and if you want craziness on the canvass, so be it.” Paint nights started in Boston just under a year ago, and quickly spread to more than 25 cities in the United States, and then to Toronto two months ago. The nights provide customers to pubs, bars, and restaurants on what would be otherwise slow traffic nights, and in exchange, they give a free space for the nights to be run. “We’re a local pub, we just want everybody local to come out here and do something,” said Scott Brockington from An Sibin Pub. The pub also runs a dart league on Thursdays, a knitting circle on Tuesdays called “Pints and Purls” and are looking into starting a Book Club on Sundays. “We’re getting in touch with our cultural side,” said Brockington. “Look at Leslieville with the art. It’s
a no brainer, there’s a new art place opening every two minutes.” After the first Paint Night on Aug. 21, it will become a weekly event at An Sibin Pub (709 Queen St. E.) every Wednesday. “It’s no surprise that there’s a lot of great hidden artists in Toronto,” said Fedorsen who studied art for five years, and also plays in a west end band with Jelilyan. “We had this one chick who did a portrait of her friend and it was incredible.” Others, he said, are much less experienced, and the laidback pub scene makes it a less intimidating experience for them. “We’ll see people who haven’t actually painted since grade school – like kindergarten,” said Fedorsen. “It’s really a social thing, it’s simply a good way to come out.” “They leave with a work of art that they do by themselves, and they actually do a good job,” he said. Tickets can be found at www.paintnight.com and are $25 with the promo code ‘paintpartyto’.

Benefit concert to be held at Opera House Rebecca field rfield@metroland.com Riverside is honouring a member of Toronto’s music community on Saturday. Bobby’s Benefit Concert is being held at the Opera House on Queen Street East to raise money for Bob Nasari, a production runner for various music events across the city. He was diagnosed with

The Opera House has donated the venue for the fundraiser, and bands have stepped up to play free of charge. Raffle and auction There will also be a raffle and an auction at the event for various items like concert tickets, hockey jerseys and guitars. All of the proceeds will go
to Bobby, his wife, and two daughters, aged three and seven. “We found out he was sick and had cancer and we wanted to do something to help him,” said Johnny Borodenko who works at Live Nation with Bobby. “It was sort of the (music) community’s turn to give back to him a little bit.” Bobby’s duties as a production runner include dealing
with caterers and picking up musicians from the airport, hotels and events. His long run with the music industry has also included him living in an apartment at the Opera House, before moving out to another street in Leslieville, and finally moving to the west end with his family. “He was a little bewildered and it took him a while to get over the fact that all this love

Speed up coroner’s inquest process
Proudly serving the communities of The Beach • East End-Danforth Greenwood-Coxwell South Riverdale Woodbine Corridor Beach Hill
O
ntario’s chief coroner has announced an inquest into three shooting deaths by Toronto police involving people who were carrying edged weapons and “may have been experiencing the effects of a mental disorder at the time of their deaths” over the past three years. The similarities to the fatal shooting of Sammy Yatim, 18, on a streetcar in the Dundas and Bathurst streets area on July 27 are many. The coroner’s inquest set for October will look into the deaths of Michael Eligon, 29, in February of 2012 in East York; Sylvia Klibingaitis, 52, in North York in October of 2011; and Pickering resident Reyal Jardine-Douglas who was shot after stepping off a TTC bus on Victoria Park Avenue in August of 2010. It’s too bad inquests were not called earlier as the question of how police deal with people who may be having a mental health crisis is an extremely important issue which needs clear and consistent guideacross Ontario. our view lines As it stands, Ontario’s Ombudsman Andre Marin is set SIU director to review the Yatim shooting. The province’s Special Investigations suggested Unit (SIU) is also looking into that inquest call shooting to determine if police actions were justified. In the shooting deaths of Eligon, Klibingaitis and Jardine-Douglas, the SIU said the Toronto police officers were justified in using lethal force. However, it’s important to note that in its report in May of last year into the Eligon shooting, SIU director Ian Scott said the incident raised a number of questions beyond his organization’s mandate. He said those questions would be best answered by a coroner’s inquest. Among Scott’s questions were: Should front-line police officers receive different training to deal with these situations and should front-line police officers be issued Tasers? In the Eligon shooting, the front-line officers responding to the call did not have Tasers. They also did not have access to the services of a crisis intervention team consisting of a mental health professional and specially trained police officer to help deal with such situations. The same scenario played out in the Yatim shooting. A crisis team was not on hand and the officer with the Taser did not board the streetcar until Yatim had been shot. We called for such an inquest in a May 2012 editorial and while we’re pleased action is now being taken; it should have been called sooner.

Holyday will be missed by the mayor
I
n a couple of days it’ll be official. Doug Holyday, the former mayor of Etobicoke, councillor for Ward 3 (Etobicoke Centre) and deputy for Mayor Rob Ford will have left the building, to become Toronto’s lone Progressive Conservative MPP at Queen’s Park. Will Ford miss him when he’s gone? Based on Holyday’s agile defence of the mayor’s nocturnal ramblings last weekend at the Taste of the Danforth? Almost certainly. The mayor has been in this apparently inebriated place before: in this case in a state that most reasonable observers would surmise to be impaired, alone, near his SUV, looking for a party and finding one amid a gleeful crowd of east-Danforth revellers and their snapping, filming cellphone cameras. Social media was abuzz; the mayor’s colleagues on council, aghast. Once
david nickle the city again, Toronto’s news media gathered outside the elevator in front of Ford’s office, to follow up on Ford’s assertion Sunday on radio that he’d just had “a couple” of beers and the whole thing was blown out of proportion. ford loses ally Holyday came out swinging, suggesting that those media – and presumably the good people of Greenwood and Danforth – were exaggerating the mayor’s condition, hounding him as no other politician has been hounded, and he worried about the “toll” all this attention would take on the mayor. When a reporter asked: what about the “tone” of the mayor’s behaviour, Holyday feigned lawyerly
mystification at what that word meant. Then another reporter asked about the seemingly sloshed mayor’s proximity to his vehicle, counsel-cum-deputyfor-the-mayor Holyday demanded to know if the journalist was accusing Ford of driving drunk and if he knew that to be so for a fact. The only bone that he threw (at least the only one not aimed at an eye) was acknowledging that the mayor might not get enough sleep sometimes, and should really get a driver. defends mayor
In short: Holyday spun it like a pro, turning Ford’s embarrassing and frankly pitiable lapse on Friday night into a partisan, mobdriven assault on a good man. Aside from his own brother Councillor Doug Ford, the mayor has few allies on council that will
contort themselves so readily to cover his backside. When Norm Kelly, Holyday’s named replacement, spoke with the media just hours before the mayor’s arrival on the Danforth, he made it clear that he was fundamentally interested in the wellbeing of the city and left it at that. Other allies on the executive committee weren’t much more supportive following the Friday night crawl. Fact is that there are few such as Holyday left on council, so able to combine patrician grace and charm with such wellhoned yet utterly-malleable partisan instincts, to assert that black is indeed white and defend a mayor who won’t accept the intervention he appears to need. He’ll be missed all right.

Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club Lack of traffic hurt businesses hosting regatta this weekend Club runs lessons for both children and adults REBECCA FIELD rfield@metroland.com Landlubbers look out, sailboats are about to race out of Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club for an upcoming regatta this Saturday and Sunday. Colin Andrews, who races frequently with his crew of seven and who is an avid member of Toronto’s sailing community, is hoping for lighter winds and flatter water for the race. “My parents had me on their boat when I was three days old so it’s just something that has always been a very substantial factor in my life,” said Andrews who lives near the Scarborough Bluffs with his wife, who is also a sailor. “My dad didn’t stop sailing until he was 85. It’s that kind of sport.” Andrews said increasingly

sailors on Lake Ontario and at ABYC are looking to cruise on their boats instead of racing. “I still enjoy sailing, but the competitive side of it I always found to be incredibly rewarding,” said Andrews. “You never ever stop learning, the sport is one that will continue to evolve.” ABYC runs lessons for both children and adults throughout the spring and summer. “This is course racing, we call it around the cans,” said ABYC chair and regatta organizer Roger Van Vlack. The regatta will take place over two days (August 17 and 18), and sailors will complete
up to a total of seven races, each over an hour long. “There’s a lot to like about sailing,” said Van Vlack who has run over 30 regattas. “The best description of sailing is hours and hours of sheer boredom punctuated by moments of terror.” Back on shore while the racers trim the main sail, a Cuban drum band will perform while food and refreshments are provided. “Everybody is always looking for crew,” said Van Vlack. “Sometimes people come down and feel intimidated so they’re reluctant to get involved. “The atmosphere for sailing in Toronto is huge, but you have to be assertive.”

Pad likely won’t be approved: Glenn >>>from page 1 an incentive for these people to operate there, but they’re not going to operate there.” The club will be hosting an international convention next year and were hoping to use the pad as a landing area for their international officers and directors after touring them around the harbour. Buhot said the pad is safer and more conducive to the different groups that use the space. Ryan Glenn, manager of business services with Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, said the pad will
most likely not gain approval as it was put in without a permit on an area of land owned by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). “There could be natural fish habitat as well as nesting area for birds,” said Glenn who noted the cement goes right up to the edge of a matured maple tree at the edge of the water. “We want to save that tree because it is a mature tree, so we want to rectify what they’ve done in order to ensure the best possible chance of that tree surviving,” said Glenn.
“ We would not grant approval for that. It’s not needed under the scope of their current use, which does not include the WaveRunners.” The city has asked the club to remove the pad after discovering they had not sought out the proper permits and that they planned to charge the Toronto WaveRunners a market rent rate. “They have a beneficial rent due to the fact that it’s a not-for-profit boating club,” said Glenn who noted charging a for-profit rate was not keeping with the intent of the space.

pants had to dance for the whole five minutes to qualify for the record and the unofficial number of dancers was pegged at 7,835. The previous record was 5,614 set in Volos, Greece last year. The largest yogurt bowl record setting event saw the festival, in conjunction with Parmalat and their Astro Original Greek Yogourt, build the record-breaking container, which was 5.515 feet tall versus the previous record by Fair Cape Dairies in South Africa at 4.528 feet tall. The container, including the lid, was 288 pounds. The weight of the yogurt that was poured into the container was 1,322 pounds. Organizers said the total weight of the yogurt plus the container, as per Guinness World Record rules, was 1,600 pounds versus the previous record of 1,199 pounds.

The 20th annual Pilaros Taste of the Danforth ended up being a record-setting event. Attempts were made to set Guinness World Records in two categories at last weekend’s festival – most people participating in a Zorba Dance and largest yogurt bowl – and both were successful. Also, organizers said this year’s festival broke past attendance records with an estimated 1.5 million people attending at some point during Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. The Zorba Dance record attempt was made on Saturday afternoon, and blue and white bandannas were sold to participants to confirm the number of dancers and to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Canada. The dance began at 1:54 p.m. and concluded at 1:59 p.m. Organizers said partici-

Good things come from
AN NEW EW KI KIND ND OF C CHOIR HOIR FOR FOR...NON-SINGERS. ...NON-SINGERS.
Choir members singing, laughing & having a blast at a session.
When it comes to feeling more energetic, positive and relaxed, Sharon Ricci thanks her newfound passion: singing in a choir. Anyone who knows Sharon will be surprised to hear that. Why? Because until joining My Pop Choir, Sharon would say: “I am not a singer. But I love to sing, mostly in the shower and the car, of course!” So how did she make the leap from “fear of singing in public” to “loving being in this choir”? Sharon credits the comfortable and fabulously fun My Pop Choir, the fastest growing group of ‘everyone’ choirs in Southern Ontario.
larly good singer but together we sound great!”
According to Jacqueline Curtis, the founder of My Pop Choir, “You don’t need experience, musical skills or even know how to read music and there are no auditions or solos. The experience is about fun, energy and comfort. You leave your worries at the door when you come to a My Pop Choir session.”
Etobicoke choir member, Bob, said “Joining My Pop Choir was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Just learning a great song like California Dreamin’ together, in harmony, with everyone is amazing but then there’s this sense of community you feel when you’re gathered together singing, laughing, making mistakes and then getting it.”
Choir members agree that there are tremendous physical and psychological benefits to being a part of My Pop Choir. “It’s virtually impossible to think of anything else when you’re at a “YOU DON’T NEED SINGING EXPERIENCE OR KNOW HOW TO READ MUSIC AND THERE ARE NO AUDITIONS OR SOLOS. THE EXPERIENCE IS ABOUT FUN, FREEDOM AND LEAVING YOUR WORRIES AT THE DOOR.”
session. It’s therapeutic! There’s almost as much laughter at My Pop Choir sessions as there is singing,” says Oakville choir member Jenny Anderson. “No one thinks they’re a particu-
Asked where the idea of My Pop Choir came from, Jacqueline says that she is like other My Pop Choir members. “I love to sing and looked for something like this; a place where I could feel comfortable, not feel judged, sing pop and rock, not religious songs. I couldn’t find what I wanted, so I created it.” Clearly Jacqueline wasn’t alone. My Pop Choir started in September 2011 with 1 choir and has since grown to 7 choirs with over 300 members in the GTA!
The first two sessions are free Pop-Ins so you can see if My Pop Choir is for you. There’s nothing to lose, but your stress. For more info and to register for a Pop-In or for the whole term go to www.mypopchoir.com. The 10 week fall term for all choirs starts the week of September 9th. The Riverdale choir sessions are on Tuesdays beginning September 10 from 7 to 8:30 pm. MY

Ewan Dobson’s unique fingerstyle guitar at Castro’s Lounge TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com A musician born and raised in the Beach, who took the Internet by storm with his unique guitarplaying style and videos, returns to play for his hometown crowd. Ewan Dobson, whose online music videos have racked up tens of millions of views on YouTube, plays at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Castro’s Lounge, 2116 Queen St. E. Dobson, who plays fingerstyle guitar, became an Internet sensation thanks to his unusual guitar playing, fashion sense and music videos. Fingerstyle guitar allows one musician to play the part of many. Using the style, one musician can single-handedly play a song’s bass, harmony, melody and percussion parts. Literally born in the Beach, in a house on Golfview Avenue, Dobson now lives in Richmond Hill. The provincial, national and international award-winning guitar player looks forward to returning to the Beach to perform. “I think it’ll be fun to play in the neighbourhood I grew up in,”
he said. “Maybe some old classmates will come, if they’re still in the area.” Dobson fuses many genres together in his songs. The classically trained guitarist draws on rock, metal, video game, bluegrass, folk, techno, trance music and more to create his unique sound. The video for his most popular song, ‘Time 2’, has been watched almost 13 million times on YouTube, and featured on the Internet’s hottest viral video websites. “People were surprised to see a guitar with one delay pedal making a type of sound that they might only attribute to being possible from computer electronic music,” said Dobson of the song’s appeal. The song, he added, wasn’t meant to be a hit. “It turned out to be the most successful song on the album, but it wasn’t intentional. I kind of threw it in there like an album stuffer,” he explained. “I just thought yeah, this (song) will be fun.” ‘Time ‘2 topped iTunes charts around the world, hitting number one in Finland, Germany and Sweden. With eight albums under his belt,

following the release of his most recent record, Acoustic Metal, this year, Dobson now plans to focus on performing. He will tour the eastern United States later this year, before taking his show on the road to China in October, and Europe early next year. He has previously toured Canada, England and the US.

Presently, he’s recording guest spots for a big-name artist whose new album is due out early next year. “I can’t actually say exactly who it is,” teased Dobson, hinting, “He is in one of the biggest metal bands of all time.” While Dobson has a couple unreleased tracks up his sleeve, he said it will likely be a year or so before he looks to put together a new album. When he does record again, he noted he’s open to doing more collaborations, such as his work with drummer Zack Bevelacqua on Acoustic Metal. His songs will likely remain instrumental, letting his guitar playing shine through. “I haven’t had any inspiration to do lyrics, I guess it’s not my thing,” he said. “...it would definitely be someone else writing them over top of what I’m doing.” More of Dobson’s music videos will be released through YouTube this year by his label, Candyrat Records. He scored a recording contract with the American label as part of his prize for winning the 2009 Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition, and was signed by
the company shortly after. His Beach concert will feature a mix of songs from all his albums. The show, which Dobson said will be high energy, is donation based, meaning people can pay what they can to see him play. From his beginning playing guitar at home in the Beach, to his international success, Dobson remained true to himself, and attributes that to his appeal. “With some of the (quirky) things that I’ve done, I was issued warnings by people. People that didn’t know me well, they’re like, ‘Listen, you are going to go down if you go down this road.’ They almost made me feel afraid, and I was like, ‘Really, it’s going to be that bad?’ And I was stubborn, so I did it anyway, but interestingly enough, it seemed to work,” he said. “People still appreciated it, even though my tastes were, as I’ve been described to me, unusual. I think it just goes to show if you genuinely enjoy something, and you do it how you would do it naturally, I think people can respond to that.”

Mayor Ford had a ‘couple of Too much Ford scrutiny? pops. Big deal’: Doug Ford
“
DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com
DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com It shouldn’t matter that Mayor Rob Ford had “a couple of beers” when he attended Taste of the Danforth last Friday night, according to his brother city councillor Doug Ford. “You guys want to play investigative reporter here, playing the cop?” Ford said to reporters outside his brother Rob’s office at city hall Tuesday. “At the end of the day, people had a great time... no one got hurt and this is being blown out of proportion.” Ford met with reporters outside the front door of the mayor’s office as the mayor was ushered in through a side
door in the secure city councillors’ section of city hall. Reporters had been staking out the mayor’s office in order to speak with Ford about his conduct on Friday night. Ford was photographed and video-recorded on Greenwood Avenue and on Danforth Avenue, alone by his car, apparently intoxicated. Not driving At one point on one video, the mayor told the crowd that he wasn’t driving repeatedly, then offered something that sounded like “cologne” to revellers who surrounded him. The incident exploded on social media over the weekend.
Mayor Ford addressed the issue on his radio show Sunday, saying he had “a couple” of beers, but that the matter had been blown out of proportion. Repeated questions Doug Ford refused to answer repeated questions about how much and where the mayor had consumed the alcohol. “He’s gone to a thousand events, he has a couple of pops,” said Ford. “Big deal. No one got hurt. Everyone had a good time. The media’s got a slow week because it’s summer time. (Where did he drink?) I don’t know where he drank and who gives a hoot?”

Brown seeking redemption for Canada Rugby player in vital role JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
Aaron Brown, who grew up in the area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street attending Bowmore Road Public School, wasn’t on the Canadian relay team that had a surprise bronze medal quickly stripped from them at the 2012 London Olympics by a lane violation. But he will be on the Canadian relay team gunning for redemption at the 2013 Moscow world track and field championships. “I feel like I’m part of the team that wants redemption after what happened in London (2012), even if I wasn’t part of it,” said Brown, 21, in an interview posted on the Athletics Canada website. “We have a goal, we want to medal, we want to be on the podium.” The race is set for the final day of the world championships on Sunday, Aug. 18. Brown, a Birchmount Park Collegiate grad, made his remarks, following his 100m semifinal race Sunday at the world championships. His time of 10.15 seconds put him in fifth place behind tripleOlympic gold medalist Usain Bolt who won the semifinal heat in 9.92 seconds. Bolt then went on to win

the world championship final in 9.77 seconds. “I got out pretty well, obviously Usain’s (Bolt) acceleration is crazy, I was running next to him out there,” said Brown, following the semifinal heat. “No complaints here, happy with how I performed. I’m just going to focus on 4x100-metres now.” Brown, who will embark upon his
senior year on a track scholarship at the University of Southern California in September, has made it a habit of running into Bolt at the big races, having also raced alongside Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics in the 200m semifinal. Brown just missed qualifying for the Olympic final, settling for ninth place.
With 13 years experience on the rugby pitch, Beach resident Liam Underwood is set to play a vital role as the Canadian national men’s rugby team vies for a spot in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The 26-man national team will play a home-and-home series against the U.S. over the next two weekends, with the winner qualifying for the worlds. “I got into it when I was about nine and my dad was helping to run a league down at Balmy Beach,” Underwood said. “I saw the older guys playing there, having fun, and it made me want to play too.” He continued playing while attending Malvern Collegiate and continues to play through his studies at Queen’s University. A talented fly-half, he has shared time at the position with Nathan Hirayama and Harry Jones over the Canadian national team’s past five matches. “We bring communication and organization around the field as the link between the forwards and the backs,” he said. “I think I bring

a bit of calm to that position and I’m good at staying steady.” Underwood played with the national team in matches against Ireland earlier this summer and, while Canada was unable to come out victorious, he said the team learned valuable lessons. “We lost, but it was a tight game for the first 55 minutes or so,” he said. “We learned we can’t fall off near the end of games – we have to close them out.” As for the upcoming qualifying matches, Underwood said the Canadian side feels confident going in – and with good reason. “I don’t think we’ve lost to them in the past four years, so as long as we play hard and execute correctly, we should be able to win,” he said. “They’ll play us hard and play physical, but we’re going to do the same thing.” Should Canada advance past the U.S., they will face off against some of the world’s top rugby squads in London in 2015. Canada will square off against the U.S. in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday, Aug. 17 and at BMO Field in Toronto on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Closures, upgrades, and construction New name for subway station recognizes station closure set to start wPape The TTC is set to shutter Pape Station to complete extensive renovation work. The station has been under construction since 2009. It will close for 12 days as of Aug 19 to speed up the remaining projects, which include installing an elevator, tiling and ceiling work and finishing the redesigned station bus bay and new enclosed passenger waiting area. The shutdown was initially planned for June but delayed by a job action by tile workers contracted by the TTC. To learn more about the Pape station renovations visit www.pape.ttc.ca. district intersection wFinancial
A makeover of the financial district’s most prominent intersection is nearly complete. New banners and street pole wraps are up at King and Bay streets, part of an extensive streetscape renovation commenced in early summer.
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The renovation includes new street signs, black metal garbage receptacles to replace the less durable plastic “turtle” bins and a thorough power wash of the intersection’s sidewalk. The improvements are scheduled for completion by the end of August. track replacement work wStreetcar
The intersection of King Street West and Spadina Avenue remains shut for another week as streetcar track replacement work continues. The intersection was closed Tuesday, Aug. 6 for two weeks. On Aug. 20, one lane in either direction on King and two lanes south on Spadina will re-open as construction crews work to complete track and road work. While the closure continues both the 504 King and 508 Lakeshore streetcar lines
as well as replacement buses for the 510 Spadina route will divert around the intersection. The work is scheduled for completion by Aug. 31. subway supports removed wCancelled
Last week, construction crews began relocating overhead power lines along Eglinton Ave. W. to pave the way for the removal of support piles belonging to a long cancelled subway project. While the first stage of tunnel construction for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit (LRT) project proceeds below Eglinton toward Allen Rd., Metrolinx must remove the support piles located east of the Allen – vestiges of the old Eglinton subway halted in 1995 – so as not to interfere with future tunnelling. The relocation work is expected to last several weeks. For more information visit www.thecrosstown.ca

nearby Black Creek Pioneer Village RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The subway station once known as Steeles West is getting another name change following a compromise by the TTC’s board of commissioners. Part of the six-stop TorontoYork Spadina subway extension, the Steeles West name was changed by the board last September to Black Creek Pioneer Village in honour of the heritage attraction located 800 metres from the station’s planned site at the intersection of Steeles Avenue West and Northwest Gate. But during this week’s TTC board meeting, a majority of commissioners agreed to support a compromise floated by commissioner Maria Augimeri to again rename the station Pioneer Village. Augimeri, who strongly supported the original name change, said the compromise would still allow the TTC to showcase the historical city
attraction. “I think cutting the name down still gives the appropriateness of the site,” she told her fellow board members during the meeting held last month at City Hall. But commissioner John Parker argued the name change would mislead visitors into thinking Black Creek Pioneer Village is right by the station. “If we’re careless with our naming we’re going to give the appearance the station is something that it isn’t,” he said, urging the board to return the original Steeles West moniker. Following the decision, TTC chair Karen Stintz promised Pioneer Village will remain the permanent name of the station, which is scheduled to open the middle of 2016. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s it,” said Stintz who did not vote in favour of the name change. She promised the station’s construction timeline would
not be delayed because of the name change. TTC CEO Andy Byford also did not support the decision, noting changing the name to Pioneer Village will result in additional costs to re-design the station’s architectural cornice plus materials fees. Earlier it was revealed a name change to Black Creek Pioneer Village would have cost the transit commission at least $25,000. He was also concerned the TTC was deviating from its traditional practice of naming stations in order to make them easier to find. “We have a tried and tested policy of naming stations after major roads and intersections,” said Byford following the meeting. “It’s also the most user-friendly policy.” The station is still described as Steeles West on the TTC’s project website for the Spadina subway extension.
