A new Gerrard Street spa service that, according to two online listings, offers “erotic massages” and advertises itself as “a beautiful new adult massage parlour located in the Beaches” has attracted the attention of municipal bylaw officers.

The Mystic Spa, on Gerrard Street between Coxwell and Greenwood Avenues, opened its doors just last weekend, but according to Municipal Licencing and Standards Manager John DeCourcy, it does not have a license to operate either as a holistic health centre or a body rub parlor.

“We checked last night (Monday) to see if they’ve been issued a license and they have not been,” DeCourcy said.

And, at least according to advertisements on the websites Canpages.ca and Yellowpages. ca, the location offers a full range of services, including “erotic massage,” “adult massage” and “exotic massage.”

“They pulled out a bunch of carrots from some plots and some kale and just left it there. On the bright side, the girls have formed a ‘Mystery Club’ to find the culprits.”

Hendriks posted their finding on social media. Another member of the garden saw the post and reported “carrots yanked and not taken and several unready garlic plants, a cuke and a squash marauded.”

The following day, the family went back to The Rail Garden to find someone had also ripped out several green tomatoes.

Hendricks, who serves as a volunteer member of the organizing committee for The Rail Garden, said she understands a certain amount of thieving from the urban community garden will happen, but to just rip out plants and leave them strewn

Hendriks said in past years some of the community garden’s members have noticed some of their food removed and likely eaten, but never just blatantly discarded.

Gemmill called the unneighbourly behaviour

“disappointing” and said the individual or group of people who did this “don’t get what the garden means to people.”

“There’s not much you can do about it. It’s unfortunate, but these things happen I suppose,” he said.

At this time, police have not been notified of the incident, which Hendriks is calling “a random act of vandalism.”

She went on to say there was a lot of discussion back in 2012 when The Rail Garden first opened about whether a fence should be installed surrounding the garden, but in the end the organizing committee decided against it.

“It went against everything everyone involved wanted,” Hendriks said.

A few months ago, vandals also tagged the garden’s shed.

Someone recently cut a hole in a fence that connects the garden to a housing development.

Colourful sidewalk art brightens up Danforth Avenue JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com For the third year, Toronto-based sidewalk artist Victor Fraser is bringing a little extra colour to Danforth Avenue.

Fraser is behind a “guerilla” art project called Alphabet on The Danforth.

For the last two or so months, he’s been painting colourful letters of the alphabet along a 2.5-kilometre stretch of Danforth Avenue from about Pape to Woodbine avenues.

The majority of the letters are strategically located: the R is in front of Red Rocket Coffee, while the O is outside The Only Café.

“I thought, ‘What could I do for this neighbourhood to bring culture?’” said Fraser, who lived for almost four years near Danforth and Greenwood avenues.

In the early stages of his project, Fraser visited The Only Café to

sketch and get inspiration for his endeavour, which he views as both a gift to the neighbourhood as well as to The Only Café, a locale known for supporting independent artists.

He said Alphabet on The Danforth is inspired by the many families he observed strolling along Danforth Avenue.

Initially, Fraser had hoped to obtain funding from local business improvement areas for his project, but that didn’t happen so he decided to go ahead regardless.

“I just love seeing smiling kids. My goal is to bring a little positivity to the strip and art is a healing thing,” Fraser said of what motivated him to do the project, which he completed this weekend.

years, Fraser started out busking at the corners of Yonge and Dundas and Bloor and Yonge streets.

Before long, he started getting hired for his artwork. Fraser has since been hired by a number of corporate clients and has been commissioned to do dozens of interesting sidewalk art projects around the world.

He also regularly paints “guerilla” pieces throughout Toronto and has a general understanding with the city’s Public Works department that his pieces are intended for the beautification of the city.

Self-taught, Fraser usually starts off by outlining his semi-permanent pieces in chalk then fills them in with either water-based paints and/or pastel chalk depending on the type of project he’s working on.

His pieces have appeared in Vancouver, Montreal and New York City as well as in Germany, Belgium, Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Fraser has also painted numerous pieces throughout Toronto, including a number of works on sidewalks outside Fire Hall 314, 312 and 311, EMS Station 40 and 52 Division.

Recently, Fraser completed a large compass design at the corner of Danforth Avenue and Main Street.

The work features the words dignity, respect, love, hope and trust.

This spring, Fraser also worked on a number of projects including a Zodiac-inspired piece outside Trinity-St. Paul’s United Church at Bloor and Spadina streets as well as a 25-feet long Thunderbird piece outside Queen Street West’s Horseshoe Tavern in honour of First Nations Day. Every Thursday, he heads down to the Hospital for Sick Children to continue painting a sidewalk art piece featuring heart motifs.

oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions, which define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching.

It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7.

The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend.

Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they to see, and those tradiour view want tions are handed down through the generations. You can pretty A Toronto much bet if your parents made a point of going to The Ex on the tradition air show weekend because that’s what they wanted to see, you will returns now be taking your own kids, or maybe even grandkids, to also see the air show.

Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions.

Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians.

The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE also makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest, which takes place for the first time this summer.

Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer.

Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach to name but a few.

Transit isn’t the only issue on minds of Toronto voters in federal election

T

here’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial.

At some point in the long weeks leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs.

Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for

david nickle the city the right time to say so.

So really – for Toronto, there is no downside.

Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story.

Toronto has other needs that only the federal government can properly meet. We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federally funded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improve-

ment.

These all should be, at some point, deal-breaking or – making policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister.

As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Toronto-centric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds.

If voters were taking simple enlightened selfinterest into account, then the child benefit cheques that the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped should have had some impact on polling for them.

While it’s early days in this very long election, it’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder

of the city looking to turf the bum out.

That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foul-mouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. From another part of the city, I and other Torontonians watched the display with a horrified recognition.

Many elections ago, former Prime Minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues.

Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems.

Councillor concerned about location of spa >>>from page 1 centre were it licensed, and while the bylaws for Toronto’s few body rub parlour licenses don’t prohibit massages of any particular body part, they do prohibit advertising of body-rub services.

As well, the bylaw requires that body-rub parlors be closed past 9 p.m.

The online information advertises hours of service until 1 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 p.m. Sundays.

As well, there is a cap of 25 body rub parlour licenses in the entire city.

When contacted by The Mirror, an employee at the business maintained that both listings were incorrect and the owner has been attempting to have them corrected.

The owner, identified as Ann Summer, did not return phone calls by deadline Tuesday.

The new establishment has local residents concerned, according to Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher.

“I know that as soon as we

heard about it, I engaged Toronto police’s 55 Division and Municipal Licensing and Standards to look into this immediately,” Fletcher said.

“I believe there’s no place for this particular service.”

Fletcher said she’s particularly concerned because of its location – right beside the Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre, and in the same building as a mosque.

No complaints “I think the community’s going to stand up and say there’s no place – and it’s right across the street from the first new condos in the entire east end – directly across the street,” Fletcher said.

Toronto police 55 Division Staff Sgt. Andy Richardson said police are monitoring the situation, but so far its Community Policing unit has not received complaints from members of the public. The next step will be an investigation by Municipal Licensing and Standards officials, DeCourcy said.

TEGH volunteer and Upper Beach resident Olive Dodds celebrates 105th birthday TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com If there’s a fountain of youth, Olive Dodds might have it.

Dodds turned 105 Aug. 12, and is still going strong.

The Upper Beach resident recently marked 30 years of volunteering at Toronto East General Hospital, where her birthday was celebrated with a party last Tuesday

afternoon. People packed the East York hospital’s Coxwell lobby to wish Dodds a happy birthday.

“She’s an inspiration to everybody,” said Denny Petkovski, manager of the hospital’s volunteer department. “It’s a privilege to be able to work with somebody like her.”

Dodds knits dolls and toys sold at the hospital to raise

funds for the volunteer association, which helps pay for new equipment and renovations at TEGH. She has also outfitted many newborns with the hospital’s knitting club.

Volunteering keeps her young, Dodds said, and is a great way to meet and spend time with friends.

Her advice for a good, long life is simple.

“Be happy,” she said. “Be content with your loved (ones). Don’t quarrel.”

She was all smiles during her party, where the packed house sang happy birthday before she blew out the candles on her cake. Her knitted creations were a hot item, selling readily.

“It was fantastic,” Dodds said of her full-house fete. “A bit staggering.”

Being 105 doesn’t feel any different than 104, she added with a laugh.

Sarah Downey, TEGH president and CEO, spoke at the party, thanking Dodds for everything she’s done.

The appreciation the TEGH community has for Dodds is mutual.

“If it wasn’t for this hospital, I wouldn’t be here,” she said, alluding to heart surgery she received after staff found a blockage in 2002. Dodds’ good-natured attitude has amassed her quite the fan club.

said. “She will always preach that if you have a positive outlook on life, you’ll live longer and you’ll live happier.”

Following the festivities at the hospital, she planned to continue her birthday celebrations with a traditional English tea party.

An only child, Dodds has one daughter, two grandchildren, and “one and a half” great-grandchildren – with the second currently on the way.

A retired nurse and mid-

wife, she came to Canada from England in 1984, following the death of her husband, and began volunteering at TEGH soon after.

Known at the hospital for her sharp wit and great sense of humour, she has no plans to quit volunteering any time soon.

“She is the star of the department,” Petkovski said.

“Living proof that if you stay active, and you’re passionate about a local cause, that it keeps you young at heart.”

The event also featured a Parade of Nations, which was the official handover of the American Paralympic Committee flag to the next host city – Lima, Peru – and extinguishing the Parapan Am flame. The ceremony ended with a fireworks display.

Largest Parapan Am wTeam Games in history Canada had its

best showing ever at the Parapan Am Games, winning 168 medals, including 50 gold. Canada placed second in the medal standings behind Brazil.

Swimmer Aurelie Rivard, 19, was Canada’s most decorated female athlete of the Games, winning six gold medals and one silver and

pan am/parapan am breaking the world record in the 100-metre freestyle.

Ten world records were broken in track and field, swimming and powerlifting at the Parapan Am Games.

By the end of the day Saturday, TO2015 had sold more than 90,000 tickets to the Parapan Am Games.

medals in total from all the swimming events: 24 gold, 39 silver and 28 bronze.

Top Canadian swimmers include Aurelie Rivard with six golds and one silver, Tess Routliffe with four golds and one silver and Nicolas Turbide with three golds and three silvers.

Tess, 16, had a recordbreaking swim in the S7 women’s 100-metre backstroke.

The swimming events were held at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House

in Scarborough. It is the largest sport new-build for the Games and the largest investment ever in Canadian amateur sport history.
