Near the shores of Woodbine Beach on a beautiful Saturday last August, Tennyson Quance pushed herself up onto a paddleboard at the order of famed surfer Izzy Paskowitz. “Tenny get up!” yelled Izzy from the water. Her family sat watching in awe as 12-year-old Tennyson stopped wringing her hands, first feeling the water, then getting up onto all fours by herself. This might sound like an easy accomplishment for a 12-year-old girl, but for a kid with low-functioning autism like Tennyson, letting go on the water and putting her trust in the stranger guiding her board was unheard of. “She’s never done anything independent. Ever,” said Michelle Quance, Tennyson’s mother. Tennyson is non-verbal and depends on her parents for help with most things — such as using a fork to eat, often reverting to wringing her hands. “We’re all sitting watching this like it’s some type of religious miracle,” laughed Michelle, who expected her daughter to stay on the board for a minute and get off. Instead, Tennyson stayed on the board for more than 40 minutes. >>>watching, page 12
