Shack going up at St. Aidan’s

LIGHTING UP THE PARK

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It won’t be pretty but it’s guaranteed to get people’s attention. On Saturday morning, a group of teens and their adult leaders from St. Aidan’s Anglican Church will be building a ramshackle shack on the front lawn of the local church in an effort to raise awareness and funds for their upcoming volunteer outreach trip to Nicaragua. Next to the corrugated iron and cardboard structure there will be signs giving curious passersby details about the mission, which will see 10 east-end teens and six adults travel to a relatively new settlement of 212 families (856 people) called Anexo Dios Proveera, which is located in an impoverished and high-risk neighbourhood called Barrio Grenada in Nicaragua’s capital city of Managua. Once there, they’ll build up to five sturdy and safe wooden homes for hardworking families currently living in decrepit structures much like the one set to be erected in the Beach this weekend. The shack, which will house a nativity scene with figures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, will remain outside St. Aidan’s throughout the Advent season but will be replaced with the usual wooden stable on Christmas Eve. Those going on the trip will also distribute flyers and discuss their mission with people on the street on a regular basis throughout December. They’ll also be collecting monetary donations, which will be used to purchase building materials for >>>TEENS, page 3

Celebrity Chef Chuck Hughes spends his ‘day off’ in east Toronto JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It’s not every day a celebrity drops by Applegrove Community Complex’s (CC) after-school program. On Thursday, Nov. 29, famed Montreal restaurateur/charismatic television personality Chuck Hughes took time to pop by the local pro-

gram and prepare guacamole, homemade breaded chicken fingers and fresh fruit salad with the 40 or so students from Duke of Connaught Junior and Senior Public School. “Ahhh…the flavours, the textures, the crunchy bits…phenomenal,” the celebrity chef told the group of captivated kids preparing a batch of guacamole.

Hughes was also there celebrating the program’s commitment to championing real food as Applegrove CC recently received a $7,000 Hellmann’s Real Food Grant for its after-school program. For the last four years, he’s travelled across Canada as an ambassador for the mayonnaise company’s Real Food Movement, an initiative

Hellmann’s started in 2009 to make it easier for Canadians to connect with and understand the benefits of real food. Since 2010, Hellmann’s grants of varying amounts have supported school and community groups as well as families and individuals with a passion for real food to turn their >>>TEACHING, page 6
