Shack going up at St. Aidan’s
LIGHTING UP THE PARK
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It won’t be pretty but it’s guaranteed to get people’s attention. On Saturday morning, a group of teens and their adult leaders from St. Aidan’s Anglican Church will be building a ramshackle shack on the front lawn of the local church in an effort to raise awareness and funds for their upcoming volunteer outreach trip to Nicaragua. Next to the corrugated iron and cardboard structure there will be signs giving curious passersby details about the mission, which will see 10 east-end teens and six adults travel to a relatively new settlement of 212 families (856 people) called Anexo Dios Proveera, which is located in an impoverished and high-risk neighbourhood called Barrio Grenada in Nicaragua’s capital city of Managua. Once there, they’ll build up to five sturdy and safe wooden homes for hardworking families currently living in decrepit structures much like the one set to be erected in the Beach this weekend. The shack, which will house a nativity scene with figures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, will remain outside St. Aidan’s throughout the Advent season but will be replaced with the usual wooden stable on Christmas Eve. Those going on the trip will also distribute flyers and discuss their mission with people on the street on a regular basis throughout December. They’ll also be collecting monetary donations, which will be used to purchase building materials for >>>TEENS, page 3

Celebrity Chef Chuck Hughes spends his ‘day off’ in east Toronto JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It’s not every day a celebrity drops by Applegrove Community Complex’s (CC) after-school program. On Thursday, Nov. 29, famed Montreal restaurateur/charismatic television personality Chuck Hughes took time to pop by the local pro-
gram and prepare guacamole, homemade breaded chicken fingers and fresh fruit salad with the 40 or so students from Duke of Connaught Junior and Senior Public School. “Ahhh…the flavours, the textures, the crunchy bits…phenomenal,” the celebrity chef told the group of captivated kids preparing a batch of guacamole.
Hughes was also there celebrating the program’s commitment to championing real food as Applegrove CC recently received a $7,000 Hellmann’s Real Food Grant for its after-school program. For the last four years, he’s travelled across Canada as an ambassador for the mayonnaise company’s Real Food Movement, an initiative
Hellmann’s started in 2009 to make it easier for Canadians to connect with and understand the benefits of real food. Each participant has been asked to raise $500 for the cause as well as come up with an additional $2,500 to cover their flight and other program expenses such as accommodation, translators/guides and transportation. A number of fundraisers have already taken place and more are planned for the coming months. The Anglican Diocese has also provided St. Aidan’s with a $5,000 grant for the initiative. “This is the first time St. Aidan’s is doing such a project. We’re known for outreach, like our (Monday night) Out of the Cold program, but I wanted to introduce a global outreach initiative,” said Rev. Readers talk about Ford
I am not excusing Mayor Rob Ford for his actions that resulted in a single judge making the decision to have him turfed from office, but there are numerous others who have committed questionable acts who are still in office. I think it stinks to high heaven that a judge has ruled to turf our mayor for the sum of $3,150. W.D. Adamson

Toronto’s budget balancing act
n Appoint next mayor
W
hat must Toronto’s civic leaders accomplish as they shape the 2013 capital and operating budgets for the city? A number of things – and they form a balancing act between delivery of services and exhibiting fiscal responsibility. Budgets are complex documents and when discussions opened last week, some heated disagreements took place on the floor of an alreadypolarized city council. But balance is in order and we offer the following suggestions to help guide the process: • Councillors must continue to engage with their constituents on what are priorities in their respective communities. This is true whether the issue is sports arena fees, community policing or support for a festival. Local representation is the essence of the system that’s our view in place. Our communities and Have your neighbourhoods are the city’s building blocks. But they are say about the unique and those ward-level exchanges need to be taking budget place. • On the council floor there must be acknowledgement and careful consideration of all revenue tools, including property tax. While a sharp eye on expenditures is expected, it’s not realistic to dedicate oneself to one side of the ledger when trying to balance a budget. As impressive a feat as reducing expenditures in last year’s budget was, it’s not a sustainable practice for Toronto council. Tax increases are never popular (the budget currently proposes a modest 1.95 per cent jump) but they are among a limited set of tools available when one searches for solutions for revenue. • Finally, there must be a sense of direction for Toronto from the budget. Once approved, the budget must demonstrate progress toward getting the city back on sustainable footing financially. The days of relying on provincial bailouts are gone. The previous year’s budget was a positive step forward. This upcoming budget must continue on that path. Budgets are a balancing act. It’s about identifying priorities and delivering cost-effective services. Unfortunately, it’s also about understanding that we can’t afford everything we may want in this city – especially if we are unwilling to pay for it. Next week, public hearings are scheduled on the budget. We encourage you to make it out to Toronto City Hall to offer your input or to contact your local councillor. The executive committee and council will approve the final budget in January. newsroom

Re: ‘Council needs to re-set priorities at halfway point,’ Editorial, Nov. 29. Your editorial is insightful. Council should make an appointment and it should be an experienced councillor who will follow the agenda of Mayor Rob Ford. He was elected by a good majority of the voters and they deserve to have their wishes honoured. If the left votes for this course, it will be further proof they only care about trying to get back into power and continue with their lack of respect for the city taxpayers. Anne Robinson
Consultation with voters is preferred option Odds are that should the time come that council has a choice on what to do about a vacant mayor’s office, they’ll choose to hold a byelection. Certainly, that’s what councillors who have been asked about it have said. And certainly Mayor Rob Ford, facing eviction from office, has said he’d be happy to put his name forward in one. But as the past two years have shown us, anything can happen with this council. And with a price tag of $7 million, it’s by no means a certainty that a majority of councillors will vote to spend that money on a byelection and not to bolster some programs in the 2013 operating budget. As tempting as saving cash might be, councillors should resist. Even if Ford’s behaviour wasn’t precipitating the
THE CITY
david nickle
event, at this point the city can only benefit from an official consultation with the voters. In 2010, Ford was elected with a powerful mandate, from an electorate who were interested in a more conservative approach to municipal government. They believed Ford when he said the government was bloated with what he called gravy, and they voted for him on the assumption he would be able to extract that gravy without meaningfully affecting services. In Scarborough, they accepted Ford’s assurance he would be able to build a
subway using private sector money. They understood that his slogan Respect for Taxpayers meant that when elected mayor, he would show respect for all taxpayers. What Toronto got was something different. Ford appears to have been wrong about the gravy; there’s not very much. He couldn’t deliver a subway without significant public investment and the support of council, and both of those were absent. As for respecting taxpayers, even disregarding the mayor’s behaviour surrounding football, it’s hard to forget the 24-hour standoff between the executive committee and the public when the administration brought forward its core services review or the ugly red-baiting the administration tolerated in its supporters.
Torontonians voted, then, for an agenda that turned out to be chimeric. And an appointment of an interim mayor that either attempts to continue that imaginary agenda or one from the left that repudiates it, would amount to a rejection of the popular will of Toronto voters. A byelection, as costly as it is, is essential for the short and long-term health of this city. If Torontonians want to continue with some measure of the Fords’ agenda at city hall, they ought to have the opportunity to say so. If they want to change direction mid-term, having lost their taste for it in the past two years, they ought to be able to say that too. Two years into the term, it may or may not be time for a new mayor. But it’s past time for a new mandate.

And the kids are having fun, too. I’m happy to support community programs where the real result is teaching kids to cook and introducing them to good food, different types of food.” Susan Fletcher, Applegrove CC’s executive director, said Hughes’ visit caused quite a stir and brought a big boost to both program participants

We’re just a small organization in a little corner of Toronto and we do really good work.” Fletcher said the $7,000 grant has gone to good use, allowing organizers of the after-school program for 36 children aged six to 12 to enhance their cooking program by purchasing new supplies and equipment as well as healthy and diverse ingredients for the nutritious snacks they prepare with the students.

Beach Buddies Pet store spreads the love
Tails pet store celebrates five year anniversary
At PET VALU you can count on our friendly and knowledgeable staff We can assist you in finding the appropriate feed for your pet from our large selection of quality brands. From toys to bedding to numerous accessories - we aim to provide our ultimate customer - your pet with the best solution for it’s needs. Please come visit us at our Beach location:
2210 Queen Street East • (at the corner of Spruce Hill) • 416-693-4456
On December 1st, Tails pet store in the Beach celebrated five years in business with draws for customers and their friends. In a twist on the typical draw, winners of a prize package not only won the package for themselves, they also got to give away four more of the same prize package to friends or charity. Tails owner Diane Schickerowsky says the idea was about not just rewarding loyal customers but letting them pass on the rewards to other animal loving friends. “We had five draw prizes that customers earned tickets to in the month of November. In each case, the prize was for the customer and was also good for four of their friends. Tails is strongly involved in the Beach community and we want-
ed our 5 year anniversary celebrations to involve more than just our customers.” The draws took place December 1, 2012 for the following prizes: 1. Grooming for a pet and four friends’ pets, won by Moira Young 2. Betta kit (Betta fish, bowl, gravel, food, plant and water conditioner) for the winner and four friends, won by Rhonda Podger 3. Dog food, treats and toy kit for the winner and four friends, won by Donna Currie 4. Cat food, treats and toy kit for the winner and four friends, won by Louise McClaren 5. Hamster or bunny treats, toys and food for the winner and four friends, won by Melissa Sobers With every $10 worth of pur-
chases, customers earned a ticket that they placed in whatever draw they find most appealing. Winners had the choice of donating some or all of their prizes to a local organization or charity. Diane says “Tails works with a number of charities, including T.E.A.M. Dog and Project Jessie, who are thrilled to receive prizes like this for use in fundraising efforts. Likewise, we often support local schools and community organizations with prizes for silent auctions and charity events and prize winners are welcome to have us donate a portion of the prize to their favourite organization.” Tails opened for business in the fall of 2007, is located at 2211 Queen Street East and is a proud independent store and Beach original.
