Sarah Downey at the helm of TEGH Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) has a new president and chief executive officer.

Sarah Downey, who is presently serving as the executive vice-president, clinical programs at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), will officially take on her new role at the helm of the east-end hospital on April 1.

As part of the transition plan, she will start working at TEGH Feb. 23.

Downey succeeds Ron Devitt, who has served as the local hospital’s president and CEO since January 2004.

“I’m delighted to be joining the TEGH team,” Downey said in a release.

The east-west pedestrian crossing on the north side of the LeslieEastern intersection will be temporarily unavailable due to track work north of Eastern Avenue.

The crossing is expected to be restored by the end of December.

This road work is being done as part of the construction for the future Leslie Barns light rail vehicle storage and maintenance facility.

East-end Toronto Off Centre DJ School turns 10 JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Off Centre DJ School, one of Toronto’s longest running schools for DJ and electronic music production education, is 10 years old.

In honour of this special occasion and to show appreciation for past and present students, the Little India-area DJ school is hosting a student night on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The evening aims to be a chance for people to chat with other students and staff, share music, hang out with music industry guests and demo new music technology all in Off Centre’s comfortable studio environment.

The student night event will also include a showcase of track remixes that have been submitted for the school’s remix contest.

A staple of the city’s creative community, Off Centre DJ School is the brainchild of Erik Laar, AKA Circles & Squares, and his close friend/collaborator Cheldon Paterson, who goes by the DJ name sloPitch.

when he was just 16 years old from the basement of his parents’ home in midtown Toronto.

“I got a summer job and saved up to buy my first set of Tech 12s. I blasted the beats from the basement while the parents were upstairs being supportive,” he smiled during a recent interview.

For the first few years, Laar honed his basic DJ skills and little by little was invited and hired to spin at various events and venues in Toronto. He also had the opportunity to travel to the United States and tour as a DJ. Paterson, who also hails from the city’s east end, is

also self-taught.

He got into DJing more than a decade ago and has played at several clubs, bars and events in and around Toronto.

Over the years, Paterson developed a desire to expand his skills.

“I wanted to use my turntables in other ways; as an instrument,” he shared.

Paterson connected with Laar about 10 years ago and they quickly began collaborating on various projects.

“I really had a desire to get more creative and in depth with the turntablism and scratching and around 2003-2004 I met Cheldon,”

he said.

“At that point, we were just trying to be more adventurous with the sound and the turntable.”

Before long, Off Centre DJ School was born.

“Back when Off Centre first began, teaching the art of DJing didn’t really exist.

There were very few other DJ schools around,” said Laar, who in 2005 also formed a turntable duo with Paterson called iNSIDEaMIND. “Ten years later, obviously it’s a popular thing. It’s ended up being something that’s really worked out.”

while Paterson is a long-time instructor who also handles the school’s day-to-day operations.

Located in a nondescript bungalow on a busy stretch of Coxwell Avenue between Gerrard Street East and Dundas streets, Off Centre DJ School has two floors of studio space for students from all backgrounds and walks of life to learn the ins and outs of what’s involved in DJing and electronic music production.

The school’s first floor “classroom” has five sets of turntables, while the secondfloor is home to an electronic music production studio.

Those who come to learn how to DJ and produce electronic music at Off Centre DJ school can learn a range of skills including full music production, scratching, manual and digital DJing, beat matching and making, composition, set development and recording to name a few.

“There are so many intricacies to explore,” Laar said.

And while Off Centre DJ School has undergone many changes (and has had several homes) over the years, one thing has remained constant: Laar and Paterson’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of musical expression and education.

“We’ve had ups and downs along the way but we’re fortunate and I’m glad we stuck with it,” Paterson said, pointing to the school’s organic growth and its evolution with technological advances and new ideas and ways of thinking.

“We’re always growing and evolving.”

Comedienne set to perform The Full Bawdy Comedy Show JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The last few months have been a whirlwind for Leslievillebased actor/writer/comedienne and producer Shelley Marshall.

In October, the eight-year east-end resident put on a 28-day run of her critically acclaimed and award-winning solo show, Hold Mommy’s Cigarette: One woman’s story of an unfiltered life… .

The 70-minute-long show was so well received, Marshall decided to bring it back for a six-show run in late November.

Hold Mommy’s Cigarette is a show that takes the audience through the trials and tribulations of Marshall’s tumultuous life starting when her father took his own life on his birthday when she was just seven years old to her own suicide attempt 16 years ago

to her present-day reality as an unabashed funny woman who has managed to rise above and turn her sadness into tremendous success.

This fall, more than 1,000 people saw the show, which raised funds for the Red Door Family Shelter.

“Hold Mommy’s Cigarette really touched people’s lives,” Marshall said during a recent interview, pointing to a book full of touching messages people left for her following each night’s show.

For the first time in her eight years of producing shows, Marshall said she received emails from audience members, many of whom shared their stories of how their lives have been impacted by a loved one’s suicide or suicide attempt.

“It’s just endless the secrets people divulged to me,” she said. “I received so many comments from people thanking

me for giving them permission to be happy and fellow their dreams. … I never thought the simplicity of the story – just a woman wanting more and not understanding that she deserves more – would touch so many people.”

Marshall, who still struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder as well as anxiety and panic attacks but is happy to share her story and give hope to others caught up in the stigma of being silenced, plans on remounting Mommy’s Cigarette again in April.

She’s also working on taking the show on tour in the new year.

On Saturday, Marshall will be presenting and hosting the holiday edition of her always-packed vaudevillian variety show, The Full Bawdy Comedy Show – A Very Mental Christmas, for the first time at her nearly 2,000-sqaure-foot

boutique theatre space aptly named The Full Bawdy Loft at 290 Carlaw Ave. This time around, The Full Bawdy Comedy Show is set to feature Ginger St. James, St. Stella, Erin and Nara, Andrea Murray, Erin Keaney and Todd Graham.

Marshall has produced the at-times risqué and alreadysold out variety show, which features song, burlesque, circus and stand-up, for eight years at various venues.

“I can’t wait,” she said.

In the new year, Marshall will also be putting pen to paper to write her next solo show, The Clown Who Said Too Much, which explores the importance of teaching kids to be open and honest about sensitive topics that often get swept under the rug and finding different ways to approach them.

She’s also working on putting together a ‘January Blues’

series featuring all things blue from bands to comedy to Blue (wo)Man Group-inspired performers.

Aside from the many projects she’s currently working on, Marshall said she is also excited about the possibilities for her salon theatre space, which has a full tech booth, lighting system as well as a projector and screen.

“The possibilities are endless. There are so many options for the space,” she said, pointing to pin-up and other types of photography shoots, live theatre and music events, art shows, fundraisers and script-reading sessions to name a few.

“I’m open to people in the community who want to use the space – just talk to me about it. I’m happy to support local artists.”

Small measures can make a big impact on the transit file

etting people moving in this city – on our roads and transit routes – is a complicated, political endeavour. Historically, the file moves about as fast as the traffic on the Gardiner Expressway during rush hour, ever frustrating commuters whose lives are impacted daily by the city’s choked arteries.

That’s why it’s refreshing to see some immediate, tangible measures being taken to ease our traffic woes.

Mayor John Tory’s recently announced initiatives are minor in nature compared to talk of mass transit solutions, but they make the best of a difficult situation by effecting change now.

And when compounded over time, these little measures may add up to major improvements. At least something’s being done, and our view that action is breathing some new life into the transit conversation Toronto. It’s critical we conReview small in tinue to build on this momentum.

Tory’s plan calls for several changes to things: the immediate towing of see effect cars and trucks illegally parked on major roads during rush hour, adding more arterial road cameras, ramping up the installation of re-timed traffic signals scheduled for next year, extending work hours on construction sites for large infrastructure projects and making private-sector firms pay more for the privilege of closing lanes and boulevards for construction.

On Monday morning, Tory also made official the all-door boarding of the 504 King streetcar (though many streetcar operators have already been allowing this due to overcrowding). That same day, Toronto police launched their own anti-gridlock campaign to help get us moving.

These initiatives are promising, but there’s still much to do. Long-term strategy is key and that’s already underway with a request for a SmartTrack feasibility study coming from executive committee last week. There needs to be ongoing public consultation. A review process also needs to be in place to see if these short-term measures are having the intended effect – something also called for by JeanPierre Boutros, a former city hall and TTC insider who spoke with us last week.

Fixing the transit problem in Toronto is a big picture kind of dilemma. But these quick wins deliver some much-needed momentum at a time when the transit file’s been all but stalled at the gate.

How do you solve a problem like Mammoliti?

The voters of Ward 7 returned Giorgio Mammoliti to office this year – in one of the least explicable electoral decisions this side of 2010.

The long-serving city councillor is, after all, under investigation by police for a fundraiser that so egregiously violated the rules under which councillors operate, that council also docked three months of his pay.

The one thing to say in defence of these perplexing constituents is that at least they don’t have a relationship with former members of the Sussex Group – a lobbying organization named prominently in the integrity commissioner’s report as contributing to the councillor’s $80,000 take from the 2013 fundraiser.

The same cannot be said for Mayor John Tory, who hired two former members of the energetic lobbying organization as his senior staff: Chris Eby as his chief

david nickle the city of staff and Vic Gupta as his principal secretary.

Those hires raised some eyebrows around city hall when it was announced shortly after the election.

It wasn’t really a problem, until now – just a week after Tory pushed the appointment of Mammoliti to two influential (and potentially influence-able) bodies, the committee that appoints members of the committee of adjustment, and the board of Exhibition Place.

Mammoliti has now come forward with a request to cover $48,000 in legal bills he’s accumulated, attempting to strike down the report from the integrity commissioner, and restore the $26,000 in pay he’s lost.

One could sense last week that Tory and his team had realized they’d made something of an error, at least in supporting Mammoliti for the committee of adjustment appoint-

A motion by Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Norm Kelly, to add more members to that committee (and so dilute the individual influence of each councillor) passed easily.

The Exhibition Place appointment went through easily, despite objections from Councillor Mike Layton.

None of this, of course, suggests that Tory or his team are actively behaving improperly, or that there’s anything legally wrong with appointing the dulyre-elected Mammoliti to boards and committees for which he’s eligible.

But appearance is important in politics, and it sets a tone early in the term – and the tone that the mayor’s tacit support of Giorgio Mammoliti sets is a troubling one.

Retiring leader leaves lasting legacy to help homeless Brian Smith, who for 36-years served as the president and CEO of WoodGreen ( WG) Community Services, will be leaving behind a lasting legacy when he officially retires on Dec. 31.

Smith’s unwavering dedication to eradicate poverty and provide marginalized individuals and families safe and affordable places to live will be forever honoured with Brian’s Fund to End Homelessness.

The fund was launched on Dec. 3 during his emotional retirement celebration at Whistler’s Pub. “We’re here tonight to pay tribute to an extraordinary individual,” said Smith’s close friend and colleague Gordon Cressy, who served as the evening’s master of ceremonies.

“Tonight is a night for all of us, in our own way, to say thank you.”

songs and speeches kicked off with a few words from Jasmine Tehara, WoodGreen’s chair of the board of directors.

In her remarks, Tehara said Smith is someone who has worked tirelessly to advocate for the vulnerable and find solutions to some of the city’s most complex problems.

“Those who much is given, much is expected,” he said before thanking his partner, Maureen, for her unconditional support and love over the years.

Smith, who prior to working at WoodGreen, was a social worker for the Catholic Children’s Aid Society then the executive director of St. Stephen’s Community House, said his main goal when he started at WG was to bring resources to the community.

In the end, he succeeded in helping bring resources to many areas of the city, which in turn, has helped build supportive neighbourhoods.

“My time at WoodGreen has been such joy,” Smith said, admitting he’d have done the job no matter what he was paid.

Leslieville BIA campaign nets award The Leslieville Business Improvement Area earned top honour at the recent Toronto BIAs Recognition Awards Dinner for its cheeky ‘Take a Detour to Leslieville’ advertising campaign.

The fourth annual event, which is organized by the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas and sponsored by the City of Toronto and Metroland Media Toronto, took place Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the Palais Royale Ballroom. open for business The Leslieville BIA, which represents business and property owners along Queen Street East from Booth to Vancouver avenues, was awarded the 2014 Marketing Award (small budget) for its colourful signage campaign, which was aimed at reminding people the neighbourhood is open for business despite TTC construction.

Leslie intersection from May 11 to June 21, the campaign involved placing 16 posters each measuring 3’ by 3’ around the immediate construction zone and along the “feeder” roads.

Ads featuring eye-catching, yellow detour signs encouraging visitors to stay, shop, eat, browse in Leslieville despite the disruption of TTC construction were also posted on banner ads on City of Toronto websites and on TTC subway

platform overhead signs.

The BIA even morphed the creative detour design into its ‘Lemons for Lemonfest’, which was part of its Summer 2014 Wanderlust shopping event. Local graphic designer/illustrator Kinnon Elliott came up with the concept for the campaign.

tips in mind can help homeowners save their hard-earned dollars on heating bills this winter by reducing their consumption levels.

1. Think of winter as your annual time to take a good check on your furnace, says Betts, who adds that considering a twostage natural gas furnace is a great way to save.

Two-stage furnaces are smarter because they automatically using less gas until it determines that 100 per cent of its capacity is needed to maintain the desired temperature.

That might only happen a few times each winter, meaning that you effectively are using a smaller furnace for most of the season.

2. .During daylight hours, pull the

curtains back and let the sunshine heat your home. Says Betts: “It’s free energy that you can take advantage of to prevent your furnace from coming on as often.”

3. Lower your thermostat during the hours that you may not be home and save up to six per cent on the average bill.

4. Install a natural gas fireplace. It may not have the same nostalgia as a wood-fired fireplace, but when it’s freezing outside, nothing beats the ability to flick a switch and feel the warmth, Betts says. “And there’s no need to get hands dirty with chimney dampers and ashes.”

5. If you’re away from the home for an extended period of time during the winter, as snowbirds tend to be, it’s worth considering wrapping pipes with premolded insulation found at most hardware stores.

“Aside from the inconvenience, a burst pipe can be expensive to fix. In the event of unexpected temperature issues inside your home, investing in pipe insulation is a cost-effective way to achieve some peace of mind.”
