Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Toronto is marking its 25th anniversary of its Christmas Eve Service and Celebration at Roy Thompson Hall. “It’s exciting. It’s a chance to look back and remember the beginning,” said Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, the church’s senior pastor. He went on to say the muchanticipated, music-filled event, which welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds, wouldn’t exist without the generosity of two parishioners who lived in Vancouver when the celebration was launched 25 years ago but donated $22,000 to cover the cost of making it happen. “That first year was a huge success,” said Hawkes, who came up with the idea for a

large-scale Christmas Eve event with the goal that it would inspire and give hope to people. “It’s now a special annual celebration people attend year after year.” Hawkes credited the success of the Christmas Eve event to the “wonderful sense of community” it has created for people of all walks of life and faith groups during the holiday season. He said some people even travel from as far away as P.E.I. and Boston to attend, while others enjoy inviting their parents and grandparents to the event. Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is set to be celebrated in the Beach on Saturday. The festivities will get underway at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the menorah in Kew Gardens, near Queen Street East and Lee Avenue, at 6 p.m. A Latkefest, featuring singing,
