City council approved a plan by the 519 Community Centre to go forward with a new sports and recreation facility focussing on gay, lesbian, bi and transgendered users in the West Don Lands.

The proposed recreation centre would be the first of its kind in the world, said Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam at Toronto Council’s recent meeting.

This community centre, should it happen, is because the community is responding to an absence of dedicated spaces for LGBT people,” said Wong-Tam. Wong-Tam was responding to concerns raised by York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, who worried the centre would be exclusive of non-GLBT users – something that city staff said would not be the case.

recreation centres in the city where a transgendered person would feel entirely at ease participating.

“We know that LGBT are not always welcome despite ... saying we have equality,” she said. “This does not mean exclusion to others, it means inclusion to this community...

It’s important.”

With a total budget of $100 million, a third covered by an anonymous private donation – with the rest eventually made up by the city and other levels of government – the facility would be located at the Wheel and Foundry site on Eastern Avenue.

The approval by council gives city staff the go-ahead to come up with a business case for the proposal.

Only Councillor Pasternak and Mayor Rob Ford voted against the plan.

Beach ballerina performs two roles in The Nutcracker DANIELA PITEO bsrm@insidetoronto.com It’s not hard to imagine a young girl twirling in a pink tutu with layers and layers of tulle gently swaying up and down. And it’s not hard to imagine a young girl wishing to perform on stage – but it’s not a dream that many will fulfill, save for a few exceptional young dancers.

Beach resident Destiny Malloy, 11, will get the chance to fulfill that dream and dance on stage with the National Ballet of Canada during this year’s performance of The Nutcracker.

This opportunity can only be described by the young dancer as exciting.

“I love watching the principal dancers practice during rehearsal,” Destiny said. “I like to try and copy what they are doing on stage.”

She said she feels nervous around the seasoned dancers, but the apprehension edges away through the guidance and tutelage of her instructors.

The timbre of her voice can’t hide her shyness, but it also reveals her enthusiasm.

“I went to see a ballet performance when I was young and I really loved it,” Destiny said.

Her mother, Melissa Malloy, remembers her daughter pirouetting around the living room as a toddler, but didn’t imagine she’d spin her way onto Canada’s premier ballet school’s stage.

“When she was a little girl she kept saying, ‘I want to wear a pink tutu and be a ballerina,’ so when she was three of four we put her in a class,” said Melissa. “She’s loved it ever since.”

Melissa and her husband Deon,

who works at Metroland Media Toronto, support their daughter’s ambition to become a principal dancer with the ballet, didn’t immediately recognize her talent.

“It was her dance teacher (who) suggested we audition her for the national ballet,” Melissa said. “I have no experience in dance, so I didn’t really recognize anything except her love of dancing.”

Her audition with the school was a success and now Destiny is

enrolled as a full-time student with the school.

As a part of the curriculum, she will get a chance to dance in The Nutcracker, which is on stage until Jan. 4 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Destiny will dance the role of a paper doll in her first scene then as a lady-in-waiting in her second scene.

Ballet, which combines the artistry of dance with the athleticism

of a high-performance sport, didn’t intimidate Destiny, but instead incited her desire to one day dance the principal role of Odette in Swan Lake.

Destiny’s mom and dad stand behind her and encourage her to fulfill her dream, but are mindful of the stress and pressure achieving that goal will bring.

“At this point, Destiny is handling (her training) quite well,” Melissa said. “As long as she still loves dancing, we will support her, but if she tells us she is no longer interested, we won’t pressure her to continue.”

There were concerns about their daughter’s health and the rigourous physical challenges and expectations put upon dancers, but the school has reassured both Melissa and Deon their dancers are strong, well-nourished and happy.

Thus far, Destiny is happily living her childhood dream – dancing for a professional company – but she’s only just begun.

“I am proud to be dancing with the school,” Destiny said. “I think it’s fun to do and I plan to be a principal dancer when I’m older.”

Though it’s now heralded as a quintessential all-American holiday movie, A Christmas Story has a distinctly Canadian tinge to it.

The film’s status as a television staple belies its origins as a littlerecognized cult classic back when it was released 30 years ago.

Those with a keen eye might note some Toronto landmarks – both past and present – when they gather around the set to watch young Ralphie as he avoids bullies and obsesses over getting a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.

Tyler Schwartz, owner of Christmas pop culture store Retrofestive and a leading expert on A Christmas Story, detailed the film’s Toronto backdrops in a film titled Road Trip for Ralphie.

“Literally, 90 per cent of the movie was filmed in Toronto,” he said. “The scenes from the interior of (Ralphie’s) house were shot on a Scarborough sound stage, but there are a lot of other places where, if you know what you’re looking for, you think ‘wow, yeah that’s from this scene or that scene.’”

“It was a bit of an odyssey, but we even managed to track down the original costumes used in the movie,” he said. “They were in a costume shop called Thunder Thighs costumes (in Leslieville).”

Other Toronto sites that were the setting for familiar scenes from the

film include the lot where the family bought their Christmas tree at 232 Queen St. E. (now Everest Restaurant), a laneway off Eastern Avenue where Ralphie and his friends had their run-ins with bully Scut Farkus.

One of the film’s most memorable outdoor scenes, in which Ralphie says “the queen mother of all dirty words” was also set in Toronto.

Chop Suey Palace Restaurant, the Chinese eatery where the family finally winds up eating an unusual turkey dinner, was also filmed in Toronto, on a site on Gerrard Street East that currently houses French restaurant Batifole.

Schwartz’s love of A Christmas Story is clear in his newly released book, A Christmas Story Treasury, which includes details about the films, audio clips from the movie and a grab-bag of assorted goodies related to the movie. It’s available at major booksellers or at www.retrofestive. ca/treasury As for Toronto’s role in the American classic, Schwartz said the fact that it hasn’t been much-publicized comes as little surprise. “It’s a very Canadian thing to not even realize that what is now a world-famous film was shot mostly right here,” he said.

A terrible year for Toronto’s government

I

t’s been a good year, 2013 has, for the profile of municipal journalism. That goes without saying – the Ford follies have put city hall reporters in a class akin to reality TV hosts – but it needs saying that it has been a terrible year for municipal governance, civic engagement and community in this city.

It started out bad enough.

Us versus them Since 2010, it’s become clear a large number of residents of Toronto’s suburban communities have come to hate those who live closer to the downtown core, and for a large number of downtowners, the feeling seems mutual.

It’s a particularly unhealthy tribalism we’ve caught ourselves in – a tribalism that’s stoked and been stoked by Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug.

When the year began, with Mayor Ford success-

david nickle the city fully challenging a ruling to remove him from office for a conflict of interest, the division simmered. When newspaper reports revealed that Ford had appeared in a video smoking crack cocaine and was prone to bouts of public drunkenness, his evolving denials poured gasoline on the fire.

We in the media helped fuel that further, relentlessly seeking clarification from a mayor who refused to do so, camping outside his office and occasionally outside his home – allowing conspiracy theorists to posit that the media ‘elites’ were attempting to run the mayor out of office based on some kind of classbased agenda.

We couldn’t have played it differently – as events transpired, it emerged that Mayor Ford was lying about

nearly everything; that a video of him smoking crack cocaine did indeed exist and police were investigating him, and on and on.

The mayor’s behaviour and untruthfulness was, to put it mildly, unprecedented, and journalists who don’t chase that down, aren’t doing their job.

Making things worse But in doing our jobs – in shedding light, and posing questions and persisting – yes, we helped make it worse.

For much of 2013, as a colleague of mine observed recently, the news cycle has lived on the timetable of an angry drug user.

And day in, day out, we’ve highlighted the grossest dysfunction of the communities in which we live.

Some have taken to calling it all a distraction, but I submit that it’s more an amplification, a distortion – not of the sins of our mayor, but the forces that

are tearing the city apart.

Move on In the months and years to come, someone is going to have to fix that.

Toronto council has taken the first steps in doing so, sidelining Mayor Ford and putting the agreeable face of Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly at the head of council.

The last year of the term has hopes of being sedate, conciliatory and friendly.

At least, it will be as much of those things as one might expect in an election year.

Ultimately, that is going to be Toronto’s test – not just of its leadership, but more importantly, its citizenry.

We’ve got a city broken by anger, suspicion and paranoia and we’re going to have to get past that, if there’s to be any hope at all.

Thanks to recent approval by City Council, a proposal put forth by the 519 Community Centre could see a new sports and recreation facility designed to focus on the needs of the Lesbian Gay Bi Transgender (LGBT) community opening in the West Don Lands.

Still in its preliminary stages, it calls for the construction of a new building on the Wheel and Foundry s i t e n e x t t o Co r k t ow n Common.

Maura Lawless, executive director of the 519, said the facility would be open to all, but would place a priority on ensuring teams and leagues catering to the LGBT community would be given priority.

“There’s no facility right now in the city committed to catering to the LGBT community,” she said.

“We want it to foster equity and inclusion and welcome all Torontonians, but we want a place for members of LGBT sporting leagues to feel safe.”

as a place that offers space both to LGBT groups and to straight groups.

She said the facility would ideally serve as a destination for major international sporting events and would feature more than just sports areas.

“It’s important to create it with a community centre aspect or some community space and retail,” she said.

“It would be a place where people could go play or they could go and have a bite to eat and watch a soccer game.”

Public consultation While specifics have yet to be determined – the plan must go through a public consultation process – Lawless said the plan does not currently include a pool.

“There are a number of pools within the surrounding areas,” she said.

“We need to do a full scan of the facilities that are in that area or are going to be in that

area and see what needs there are.”

Eddie Coleman, president of the Toronto Spartans Volleyball League – Canada’s largest LGBT sports organization – said his group and many others of its ilk would welcome a facility catering to LGBT sports leagues.

“We always try to find a safe environment for people,” he said. “Right now, we use schools and in a lot of cases, we’re not the only permit holders on a given night.

Depending on who we’re sharing the space with, it can cause discomfort for some.”

Coleman added an increased comfort level would be especially welcome for members of the LGBT community who are just coming out of the closet.

“It’s hard enough on their own without feeling that other people are looking at you,” he said.

The 519 has already secured a large donation from an anonymous donor and will be undertaking a capital campaign once the process is further along.

HeartCoeur offers a one-stop vegan makeup shop ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Carla Smith has had a longtime love affair with high-end makeup, but it came to an end when she went vegan.

Now, after much trial-and-error, Smith said she has sourced out the best vegan and cruelty-free makeup and she and her partner, Bob Mersereau, have launched an online store to distribute it while raising funds to help animals.

Smith became a vegan three years ago after a chance encounter with a poster promoting veganism on a streetcar.

“I guess at that time my mind was just open to it,” Smith said.

“I got home and I said to Bob, ‘I want to become a vegan’ and I just switched overnight.”

She and Mersereau started with cutting meat and meat products out of their diet. She then started educating herself on veganism and joined different vegan groups.

After about a year, veganism started to seep into other areas of her life. She stopped purchasing leather, wool and silk fabrics and not long after, she started seeking

out vegan makeup, a difficult task because she had grown accustomed to high-end makeup.

When she was in school she worked at high-end makeup counters. In 2001, she lived in Japan for two years where she did cosmetology at a Japanese salon.

“Over the years, I really started to love the expensive brands of makeup,” Smith said. “I felt like that was what it had to be in order for it to be good.”

But when she looked up her favourite brands – and their parent companies – she found they were tested on animals or had animal products in them.

“I had very few options,” Smith said. “With my background, I figured I had the knowledge and tools to find good vegan makeup.”

It was difficult and expensive to put together a full makeup look, and she said she had to go to different sites and pay multiple

shipping charges. But after much research and trial, Smith said she has sourced out all the best vegan makeup from around the globe.

In an effort to assist other vegans, and encourage non-vegans to use cruelty-free makeup. In the summer, Smith and Mersereau launched HeartCoeur, an online shop dedicated to curating a collection of quality and fashionable, cruelty-free vegan makeup.

Smith quit her job selling shipping solutions and she and Mersereau, who live near Queen and Dufferin in Parkdale, started the operation out of their home.

Then in September, Smith and Mersereau launched an initiative called CharmOverHarm, a program that partners with sanctuaries or animal welfare organizations to raise funds through proceeds of makeup sales.

Their first partner was Snooters Farm Animal Sanctuary. On Monday, Dec. 16 CharmOverHarm donated money to complete an emergency medical stall in the sanctuary’s pig barn. Until the end of December, the pair is raising money for Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary, just outside Stratford, ON.

Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary rescues animals from abuse, neglect and slaughter. Money raised will be used to build a shelter for special-needs piglets. Visit www.heartcoeur.com

Raspberry-fig napoleon

8 oz (250 grams) fresh figs 2 pkg (350 grams) frozen sweetened raspberries, thawed. Reserve juice.

1⁄2 cup sugar 3 tbsp raspberry liqueur, option 1 sheet frozen puff pastry 1 egg white, lightly beaten 1⁄4 cup sliced almonds 1⁄2 cup whipped cream 1⁄2 cup bottled lemon curd

Pomegranates make a cake look festive.

This napoleon dessert is an excellent end to any meal.

Raspberry-fig sauce Remove stems and thinly slice figs. Whirl berries and juice in blender until smooth.

Strain sauce through fine-meshed strainer into medium saucepan; discard seeds.

Stir in figs, sugar and liqueur. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer, stirring for

one minute. Cool. Chill.

Pastry Heat oven to 400 F. Thaw pastry for 20 minutes; unfold and cut along folds into three rectangles.

Cut each rectangle, crosswise, into four pieces. Place on baking sheet. Prick with fork. Brush eight pieces with egg white and sprinkle with

almonds. Bake 10 minutes or until golden. Remove from sheet and cool on rack. Split each pastry in half, lengthwise.

Lemon cream Whip cream until firm peaks form. Stir in lemon curd.

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 2/3 cup shortening 3 large eggs 1/2 cup whole milk 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp each cloves and salt

spoon; reserve sauce.

Spoon sauce onto eight small plates. Place one plain pastry, cut side up, on each plate.

Spoon half of figs and half of lemon cream on pastries, dividing evenly.

Top each with another plain pastry, cut side down, remaining figs and cream. Top with almond pastries. ~ Recipe courtesy of News Canada

open the pomegranate underwater to free the arils (seed sacs). The arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane will float to the top.

Sieve and put the arils in a separate bowl. Reserve 1/2 cup of the arils.

Cream together sugar, shortening and eggs (batter should be slightly lumpy).

Add pomegranate juice and milk; beat for two minutes.

Sift together flour, cinnamon, baking powder, nutmeg, cloves and salt.

Add flour mixture to the creamed sugar and shortening mixture.

Mix to combine. Pour into greased Bundt pan.

Bake 50 to 60 minutes. Let cool. Frost and decorate with arils.

Lemon Frosting Cream lemon juice and butter together. Add powdered sugar and beat to a spreading consistency. Thin with water if necessary. ~ Recipe courtesy of News Canada
