City council approved a plan by the 519 Community Centre to go forward with a new sports and recreation facility focussing on gay, lesbian, bi and transgendered users in the West Don Lands. The proposed recreation centre would be the first of its kind in the world, said Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam at Toronto Council’s recent meeting. This community centre, should it happen, is because the community is responding to an absence of dedicated spaces for LGBT people,” said Wong-Tam. Wong-Tam was responding to concerns raised by York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, who worried the centre would be exclusive of non-GLBT users – something that city staff said would not be the case. recreation centres in the city where a transgendered person would feel entirely at ease participating. “We know that LGBT are not always welcome despite ... saying we have equality,” she said. “This does not mean exclusion to others, it means inclusion to this community... It’s important.” With a total budget of $100 million, a third covered by an anonymous private donation – with the rest eventually made up by the city and other levels of government – the facility would be located at the Wheel and Foundry site on Eastern Avenue. The approval by council gives city staff the go-ahead to come up with a business case for the proposal. Only Councillor Pasternak and Mayor Rob Ford voted against the plan.
