Parents aim to give voice to students
Speak out on transit funding
Lacing up
tARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com A group of Toronto parents is reaching out to teachers’ unions and government representatives in a bid to return extracurricular activities to Ontario’s public schools. Children’s Advocates for Public Education (CAPE) in Ontario was formed by Riverdale parents concerned about the effect of the teachers’ labour dispute on students. The group now has more than 100 members from throughout Ontario. “We really wanted to give voice to our children... to keep the focus on the impact of the situation on children,” said Andrea Williams, a spokesperson for the group. “We’re trying to build a bridge between the government and the teachers’ unions so that we can get extracurriculars back into our schools, but also restore the goodwill at our schools.” Ontario’s public elementary and high school teachers cancelled students’ extracurricular programs to protest Bill 115, an act to implement restraint measures in the education sector dubbed the Putting Students First Act. The legislation imposed two-year contracts that included a wage freeze and reductions in sick days, benefits and bargaining rights. While the bill was repealed in January, teachers continue to protest the contracts it imposed. Worried a lack of extracurricular activities is negatively affecting students’ lives and opportunities, and Ontario’s schools, CAPE hopes to persuade teachers’ unions and the provincial government to find ways teachers can protest, and feel they are being taken seriously, without >>>Group, page 6

On the day the award was announced, he got to play in his first NHL game for the Dallas Stars – a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes
Friday, Feb. 1. He was called up a couple of days earlier from Dallas’ AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. As of Dallas’ 3-2 win over Colorado Avalanche Monday, Feb. 4. Jamie has now played in three games since being called up. For the record, he is averaging almost 16 minutes of ice time. Over the three-game stretch, he has not yet logged a point. He managed to steal the spotlight
back from his two younger sisters still at home in the Beach, who were making their own headlines in the world of sports. In particular, his younger sister Penny, in January, was literally making waves, breaking an Ontario swimming record as elaborated by this tweet from Swim Ontario Jan. 21. “Congratulations to Toronto Swim Club’s Penny Oleksiak, setting a new

Have your say on transit funding at a roundtable discussion Saturday at Metro Hall. Jennifer Keesmaat, the city’s chief planner, announced in mid-January a public consultation process that will be heavy on social media, but will also include public meetings to give residents the opportunity to provide input on an investment strategy for transit Metrolinx is drafting to deliver to the premier’s office in June. Metrolinx is considering 17 “revenue funding” tools – in the form of new fees and taxes dedicated toward financing most of the $50 billion provincial Big Move transportation plan – and is seeking input for which of the tools should be used to pay for transit expansion. The transit planning agency recently recommended $34 billion in priority projects to be completed within 15 years, including a new subway line for Toronto to ease congestion and overcrowding. KUNG HAY FAT CHOY! 2013 CELEBRATES THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE The Snake is the intuitive, introspective, refined and collected of the Animal Signs. In the Chinese zodiac, the Snake is listed after the Dragon, but its place and its significance as a symbol of worship is far less than that of the Dragon. It carries the meanings of malevolence, cattiness and mystery, as well as acumen, divination and the ability to distinguish herbs. In some places, people believe that a snake found in their court can bring delight. The Snake is keen and cunning, quite intelligent and wise.

Beach resident brings to life older Harriet Tubman Young People’s Theatre The Power of Harriet T! teaches people about heroic former slave JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With Black History Month under way, Beach area resident Dienye Waboso is looking to share an oft-overlooked story in the battle against slavery. Waboso will be performing in Young People’s Theatre’s upcoming production of The Power of Harriet T! which depicts the life of Harriet Tubman, a woman who escaped slavery at age 29, but risked her own freedom to help more than 300 other slaves make their way to the northern U.S. and Canada via the Underground Railroad. For Waboso, the chance to help share Tubman’s courageous tale was a fantastic opportunity. “It’s significant to me as an
African-Canadian,” she said. “It’s an important story that I feel needs to be told because not enough people know it. You’d be surprised at how many people don’t know who Harriet Tubman is.” Waboso said the lack of education surrounding Tubman’s struggles may have to do with the fact the heroic former slave was a woman. “You have somebody strong and powerful who leads people and it can be hard for some people to marry that with femininity,” she said. Waboso plays an older Harriet Tubman in the play, portraying Tubman after the worst of her struggles were over, but also looking back throughout the play at the events that led to that point
in her life. “I narrate, I look back and I’m in the thick of the action,” she said. “It’s a bit like patting my head, rubbing my stomach and stomping my feet at the same time.” VALIDITY OF LIFE Born in London, ON, Waboso moved to Nigeria with her family when she was eight months old, returning years later to complete high school. From there she studied theatre at Humber College, leading to roles in such productions as Canstage’s Another Africa, Theatre Direct’s Binti’s Journey and a New Harlem production of Gas Girls. While she said she loves tackling interesting and sometimes challenging roles, she finds her time off stage
Crow’s Theatre finds permanent home JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A new partnership is bringing arts programming and community space to the Leslieville community. Crow’s Theatre, a long-running theatre company that has gone without a permanent home for the 30 years it has been in operation, will be moving into a new site on the ground floor of an upcoming 12-storey, 320-unit residential building at Carlaw Avenue and Dundas Street. While the new permanent address is a boon to the company, which offers original alternative productions, both Crow’s and Streetcar Development, the developer building the residential site, said they are equally excited about the benefits it will bring to the community. “We’re looking at doing community programming in the spring and fall and we’ll work with the community to see what they want,” said Monica Esteves, Crow’s Theatre managing director. “There are a lot of families in the neighbourhood, so we could have classes for things like mask-making or storytelling, we’re looking into hosting a March Break camp and starting a community choir with full performances.”
With the company taking up nearly the entire ground floor of the building, the theatre will also be ideal for hosting community events, with a 200-seat performance space on hand. “We could host community debates, town halls, book swaps and we could look into community theatre as well,” Esteves said. FIRST OF ITS KIND IN AREA In addition to the performance space, the venue will have a 1,000square-foot rehearsal hall, a large lobby and a commercial kitchen. Having a permanent home will put an end to Crow’s Theatre’s nomadic ways. The company has worked out a partnership with CanStage, which will give them space to perform for the time being, but partnerships of that kind tend to be temporary in nature. “We put a lot of our resources, human and financial, into developing new work,” Esteves said. “Now we don’t have to spend time finding venues as well.” She pointed out Crow’s will become the first theatre venue of its kind anywhere in the area. “There’s 1.3 million people in the
area, so it’s hard to believe we’ll be the first,” she said. Streetcar Development president Les Mallins said his company was looking for an arts company to fill in the ground floor of its site from the get-go and was introduced to Crow’s through Councillor Paula Fletcher. Practically from the moment they began talking, the two sides said they felt they would be a good match. “It was uncanny how much they were aligned with our vision,” Mallins said. “I liked their loyalty to the east end. It’s underserved in the arts and they saw the merits of introducing this type of theatre in the area.” He added, as the area has been built up, there has been little in the way of public space. Mallins said he is looking forward to seeing what sorts of events the space comes to host. “The space is theirs and it’s up to them how they want to use it,” he said. “I think it will be great for the community.” The development is expected to be completed in late 2014 or early 2015, with Crow’s hoping they will be in their new home in time to perform a piece commissioned for the 2015 Pan-Am Games.

can be even more difficult. “The challenge for me is just finding validity and purpose in the time I spend not acting,” she said. “I had to learn that it’s the time when you’re not on stage – life – that informs your acting.” She added her upcoming role will enlighten young audiences about the heroine whose contributions to African-American and AfricanCanadian history should be better known. “People who come see the play can expect to see a leader who’s very much an ordinary hero, and that’s what I’m drawn to is the ordinary heroes,” she said. “(Tubman) is a woman whose purpose in life was born out of a need.” The Power of Harriet T! run until Feb. 22 at Young People’s Theatre. Impact of public meetings
A
s the city-wide tour of transit consultations makes its way through Toronto this week and next, it’s important to re-inforce the potential value these community gatherings have. When we take advantage of these opportunities, we build better communities. The Feeling Congested? series is designed to garner public feedback on transportation priorities and funding options for projects. The series kicked off with events in York Monday and Scarborough Wednesday and continues into next week with events in North York and downtown. Additionally, according to chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat, more than 1,500 people have already shared their opinions online. It is admittedly challenging to share feedback for projects that are years, even our view decades away from being realized. But as we seek to connect our Change is communities, this stage is an possible if we important one. It has impact. For evidence, look no further speak up to what happened last week on another transit-related issue: the construction of the Eglinton Avenue light-rail line. Metrolinx confirmed at a public meeting last Thursday that after reviewing feedback, a station at Ferrand Drive in North York would remain in the plans. Initially, there were plans to scrap the station from the line. Ferrand Drive is in Flemingdon Park, one of the city’s priority neighbourhoods whose dense population would benefit from a transit stop. The construction of the Aga Khan Museum nearby was also a factor in keeping the station, according to a Metrolinx spokesperson. These are the things that happen when people speak up – in this case, it helped shape and ultimately improve a critical piece of transportation infrastructure. Not bad. Hopefully the Feeling Congested? series can yield those kinds of ideas that shape our transit future. At the York Civic Centre Monday, the first session, from 4 to 6 p.m., drew a sparse turnout. But it’s apparent one common concern that’s already surfacing is how the potential funding tools – percentage of a property tax, parking levies, fuel taxes, highway tolls, among others – would be applied and to whom and for how long. These are critical questions. These are conversations we must have now. And it’s good they’re happening now. These are conversations that don’t need to be restricted to election time. So we must understand the contributions we make to our communities today can have far-reaching impacts. It’s how communities grow, evolve and prosper. newsroom

It’s time they stopped telling us that Premier elect Kathleen Wynne is the first openly gay leader in Ontario. Is this going to influence her ability to lead the Liberal Party? Isn’t it time to focus on what other qualifications she has to be a capable leader, instead of merely promoting her sexual orientation? Has any other politician come out and said they were openly heterosexual? Is sexual orientation now a prerequisite for getting elected? Really, who cares? If she is a capable leader, let her get on with leading. If not, then let’s have an election and find out who is ready to give good, honest leadership, regardless of their sexual preference. Mary P. Legal system a popular weapon in Toronto politics It’s been a big winter for the left-wing anti-Rob-Ford illuminati. They nearly toppled our virtuous, football-loving mayor for the crime of loving football too much. Fresh from that neartotal-victory, they saw fruits of their other investigations – in the form of a compliance audit of Mayor Ford’s 2010 election campaign. This is serious business: the same pack of villains saw another sometime-Ford-ally, Giorgio Mammoliti, could be facing prosecution for his own alleged electoral sins in 2010. If you listen to the mayor and his allies, the scoundrels are engaged in an unfounded, partisan and political attack on democratically elected politicians, the like of which has never been seen.
THE CITY
david nickle
And if you believe that, you haven’t spent much time watching Toronto politics. Because while it’s true that this latest round of legal challenges brought forward have come from citizens who it’s fair to say don’t agree with the direction in which Ford is taking the city – using the courts to win fights you can’t win at the ballot box is not an exclusively left-wing tactic. In the 2006-2010 term, it was councillors on the left who were in the spotlight. Former councillors Sandra Bussin and Adrian Heaps both incurred stiff legal
fees to deal with issues while in office. When the two councillors – along with Mammoliti, then an ally of mayor David Miller – had their expenses reimbursed, future Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday took the city to court, and won. Holyday’s move was a matter of principle, to be sure – he didn’t think taxpayers should be reimbursing legal fees for members of council, but it’s hard not to see it as political as well. After all, those three were allies of left-of-centre mayor Miller: Holyday was then firmly entrenched in the right-wing opposition. All of this is – or should be – beside the point. The reality is that everything that goes on having to do with politicians is political. Everyone who comes to city hall does so with an
agenda – whether improving their neighbourhood, improving the lot of the disadvantaged or finding the gravy that’s costing taxpaying Torontonians an arm and a leg. Sometimes, their agenda is more visceral: putting politicians with whom they disagree on these points out of office. The legal system might be a weapon of choice for those players from time to time. But whatever the motive anyone has for engaging it, once engaged the system has a way of sorting things out. And if politicians are found to be in breach, they really only have one enemy to blame – themselves. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Group is hopeful Wynne will bring fresh approach >>>from page 1 hurting students. To voice its concerns and look for solutions, the group met with Ken Coran, president of the Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers’ Federation, as well as opposition leader Tim Hudak, PC education critic Lisa MacLeod and NDP education critic and Toronto-Danforth MPP Peter Tabuns. It hopes to meet with Ontario’s new education minister, once appointed, as well as a representative from the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario. “We continue to contact, to be in touch with leaders of political parties, so that this issue stays on their radar. In a sense we’re really trying to put pressure on all parties to reach a timely solution to minimize the hurt that this is doing to children, and to schools, and I also think to teachers themselves,” Williams said.
“It’s about keeping our public schools strong, and unfortunately, if this goes on there’s going to be longer term damage.” Williams said she worries the current situation is driving students out of the public school system. She also worries about students whose parents can’t afford to enrol their children in programs outside of school. Lost opportunities “It’s really tough for lowincome families and for single parents to do that for their children, and that seems to us to be really undermining the quality of opportunity, which concerns us.” She noted not being able to participate in extracurriculars could keep students from earning scholarships to attend post-secondary education. Group members are optimistic Ontario’s new premier, Kathleen Wynne, will bring a fresh approach to the government’s relationship with its public school teachers. “If we can work more closely with the unions and the school boards, then we can find ways for teachers that are legal to express their discontent without undermining the quality of our schools,” Williams said. “We want the schools to be places that are really positive environments for children and teachers. We believe we have fantastic schools in our community, and in this province, and we want to keep them that way.” Visit the group’s Facebook p a g e a t h t t p : / / o n . f b. me/11neai2 for details.

Oleksiak siblings ‘blessed’ with great coaches, says mom >>>from page 1 Northeastern University’s vaunted rowing program starting this fall. The university’s program has captured three of the last four championships in its division (the Colonial Athletic Association).
‘Yes, Jamie worked hard, but he also had incredible support from so many people over the years that helped him live his dream.’
Rowing in Boston “The city of Boston is an amazing city, full of interesting and lively people,” said Hayley, in a press release on the university’s website, as to why she chose the school, which her brother attended for one year. “I look forward to rowing on the Charles (river), working with the coaching staff, attending another Beanpot, and, most of all, calling myself a Husky.” Not a bad winter, so far, for the Oleksiak family. “They have all been blessed with great coaches and support teams. They keep us busy,” said the siblings’ mother, Alison Oleksiak, when contacted for comment by The Mirror. The family has longtime ties to the community as Alison stated in a previous interview. “My husband has lived in the Beach for (more than) 30 years, my

parents and I for 20. We moved 12 years ago from the east end of the Beach closer to the box and pool, so the kids could play shinny and swim. “(It’s a) great place to bring up kids.” Penny, she added, will travel to the Eastern Canadian Championships
in Montreal Feb. 14 to 17 with a goal to turn her provincial backstroke record into a national record. For Jamie, meanwhile, last week – which started with him playing in the Jan. 28 AHL all-star game (he contributed one assist and was a plus-three) – was obviously “incredible,” Alison said.
He was selected for the all-star game having contributed 23 points (3g, 20a) in 43 games. “As parents, it has been incredibly humbling to witness the opportunities he has had over the past couple of years,” said Alison in an email. “Yes, Jamie worked hard, but he also had incredible support from so many people over the years that helped him live his dream. “As we watched him at the AHL all-star game in Rhode Island and then his NHL debut in Dallas, it brought back so many memories of these coaches, teammates and people (who) helped him get to this moment and led to his love of the game.” She elaborated on a couple of
Toronto memories: n As early as two years old, making “his grandfather spend hours shooting on him in the family room.” n As a five-year-old, “devastated when he got traded off his first house league team because he couldn’t skate, but then beaming when he was taken onto another team by a volunteer fireman coach who made sure he felt he was an important part of a team. We wish we could find this coach to tell him what a difference he made to Jamie.” n As a seven year old, making “his dad sit out in the cold at the box while he played pond hockey after his house league games.” In the end, summed up Alison, “Jamie always loved hockey and playing on a team. It didn’t matter whether it was playing pond hockey at the box, playing elementary school hockey at Ted Reeve or playing at the World Juniors. “He always just wanted to play and be part of a team whether it was five minutes or 60 minutes.”

Beach hockey dads raise $50,000 for orphanage REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com A group of hockey-playing dads from the Beach are heading to the Dominican Republic with their kids Friday for Renourish 2013, a fundraising initiative to cover operating costs for Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (Our little brothers and sisters) Orphanage. The group of 10 dads and 14 kids will be at the orphanage until Monday. They have raised $20,000 in donations, along with a crate full of shampoo, soap, cosmetic, jewelry, a wheelchair, a bicycle, shoes and volleyball supplies to be shipped this week. A donation of $1,500 is being added on top of each person’s travel costs to the cause, adding up to $36,000 in extra donations. “I’m hoping for these kids to be able to open their eyes; they live a pretty privileged
life,” said Ryan Vincent, the group’s main organizer, who has done the trip three times with his company, NutriLawn. To raise the money, the group held a movie night at the Fox Theatre on Queen Street East, sold T-shirts and held a charity hockey night at Kew Gardens rink, among other fundraisers. Day in the life “We’ll have the chance to live a day in the life of the kids down there,” said Danielle Fitzgerald, one of the kids heading to the orphanage. The kids will each bring an extra suitcase full of items for the children living at the orphanage where they will be helping out in the kitchen, nursery as well as help children with special needs. The group’s original plan was to spend the week installing solar panels, but Vincent
said they couldn’t get the proper batteries donated in time. “The panels will have to be sent in a later container.” Instead, the dads will spend the week building a volleyball court with supplies donated by Not So Pro Sports. The kids who play volleyball will hold classes at the orphanage to teach the rules of the game. The orphanage takes care of 280 children. “It’s quite sad. One third of the kids don’t know where they came from,” Vincent said. “As tragic as it is that they don’t have families, if you can get them into the orphanage, it’s a good life,” said Vincent, who noted the supplies and money donated will allow for the orphanage to spend less on operational costs, and more on the children. The group will also hold a barbecue for people who work in sugarcane fields.
