For longtime Beach resident Emma Nichols, working as an educator is all about putting students at the centre and viewing them as amazing assets. Since starting as principal of Riverside’s Queen Alexandra Middle School in January 2013, she has worked hard to make the inner city school a hub of the community where pupils feel engaged and have a voice as well as ownership of their school and their lives. Nichols also wants to celebrate the diversity of Queen Alexandra students. “There’s a lot I want to get accomplished here and I feel a huge amount of responsibility. … My students are going to be the global leaders of tomorrow,” said Nichols, whose tireless efforts and passion for student success haven’t gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, she learned she has been selected as one of Canada’s 40 Outstanding Principals. One of just four principals from the Toronto District School Board to be honoured, Nichols will formally receive her award >>>INTERACTING, page 10

The planning, design and compliance (PDC) team is responsible for establishing the guidelines and performance requirements the building team must adhere to and meet when preparing its designs. The PDC team will also monitor construction prog-
