For longtime Beach resident Emma Nichols, working as an educator is all about putting students at the centre and viewing them as amazing assets.

Since starting as principal of Riverside’s Queen Alexandra Middle School in January 2013, she has worked hard to make the inner city school a hub of the community where pupils feel engaged and have a voice as well as ownership of their school and their lives.

Nichols also wants to celebrate the diversity of Queen Alexandra students.

“There’s a lot I want to get accomplished here and I feel a huge amount of responsibility. … My students are going to be the global leaders of tomorrow,” said Nichols, whose tireless efforts and passion for student success haven’t gone unnoticed.

Earlier this year, she learned she has been selected as one of Canada’s 40 Outstanding Principals.

through partnerships with the private sector, announced that CannonDesign Ltd. has been selected to lead the planning, design and compliance aspects for TEGH’s new patient care building, which will be located at the corner of Salmon and Coxwell avenues.

The planning, design and compliance (PDC) team is responsible for establishing the guidelines and performance requirements the building team must adhere to and meet when preparing its designs.

Beat the winter blahs inside a yurt at The Ceili Cottage JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com An Irish pub in Leslieville has come up with a creative way to make use of its outdoor patio space year round.

For the last three years, The Ceili Cottage at 1301 Queen St. E., just west of Greenwood Avenue, has erected an authentic six-panel, 21-foot round Mongolian tent called a yurt on its 25’ by 35’ patio.

“We have two patio seasons.

The yurt usually goes up after Thanksgiving and stays until May 2-4 weekend,” said Patrick McMurray, one of the pub’s co-owners. “It’s a bit of a time warp when you duck your head and walk in. It’s great fun.

Everybody thoroughly enjoys it.”

For its first two years of business, The Ceili Cottage built a skating/ curling rink in its patio area during the winter.

Wanting to make better use of the space, McMurray started looking into the possibility of purchasing some sort of tent-like structure, but found the cost to be quite prohibitive.

“The yurt concept kept coming up,” he said, admitting the idea – at first – seemed a bit “too hippy” to take seriously.

After further research, McMurray came across a Montreal-based com-

dome that can open for sunlight or ventilation.

The only metal used on the yurt is the door handles.

The entire structure is also covered with four layers of weather proofing materials including five millimetres of sheep’s wool felt, cotton muslin, house wrap and then canvas.

Able to accommodate 35 to 40 people, the tent remains warm with body heat and candles.

pany called Groovy Yurts, which rents as well as sells the large circular Central Asian tents handcrafted and purchased from two families in Mongolia.

“We rented one for the first month, but it was so good we decided to buy it,” he said.

“It’s totally taken off. People love it. Our yurt is a quirky and interesting space.”

It takes a small crew about eight

hours to erect and tear down the structure, which is stored in a shed at the rear of the pub.

Like all authentic yurts, the one at The Ceili Cottage is crafted entirely from natural and/or reusable materials.

The yurt, which consists of hundreds of wooden joists handpainted with traditional blue, red, green and gold-coloured designs held together with horsehair ropes, has a central

There’s a record player in the yurt, as well as a mini prep station and four lights that all run on one 15-amp fuse. A ‘chandelier’ crafted from elk antlers graces the centre.

When it first opened, the Mongolian Ambassador to Canada delivered a blessing on behalf of the Mongolian Consul General.

McMurray said he is hoping to honour the tent’s origins by hosting

a traditional Mongolian dinner and cultural presentation there.

He’s also looking into organizing food and wine/beer pairing events there as well as après-ski events with drinks, fondue and snacks.

McMurray said people regularly drop by the pub to check out the yurt and staff are more than happy to share its story.

“It’s a learning experience,” he said.

The yurt, which is accessed through a five-foot tall double panel door, is connected to The Ceili Cottage.

Housed in a former car garage that was gutted to the bare walls and restored, The Ceili Cottage opened its doors in June 2009 and has a full roster of craft beers and an award-winning whiskey wall as well as homemade, locally sourced food offerings and oysters.

The rear part of the pub, which houses the bar area, is located in a circa 1884 structure that evokes a feeling of walking into Old Europe.

The bar top is constructed from the same slab of Kilkenny limestone used at Ireland Park at the foot of Bathurst Street.

Const. Jon Morrice works with community to prevent crime JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Const. Jon Morrice, 55 Division’s new crime prevention officer, has some big goals for the coming year.

A police officer for 14 years who started working in the community response unit last August, Morrice has created a four-point Crime Prevention Campaign for 2015.

“I’ve developed my own approach to crime prevention and it has led to the development of my 2015 resolutions,” said Morrice, who grew up in the Beach and continues to live in the city’s east end with his wife and young son.

His crime prevention “resolutions” focus on four key areas: lighting, laneways, areas that need fixing and natural surveillance.

Morrice’s first point, “Let There Be Light”, focuses on areas in 55 Division with poor lighting, notably parks, laneways and parking lots.

Some of the ways he’s addressing these concerns is by doing walkabouts and letting people know about issues he observes via social media.

His second resolution called “Changing Lanes” is in response

to the high number of break and enters to homes that back onto laneways.

“I want to focus on making (these homes) less desirable to criminals,” he said. ”With laneways, suspects can go virtually unnoticed and there are a lot of laneways in 55 Division because it’s an older part of town,” said Morrice, who said he’s working on encouraging residents to clean up and maintain the laneways at the rear of their home and make them more liveable spaces.

Celebrate laneways On that note, he said he’d like to see residents make better use of their laneways by holding community events and parties in them and by naming more of them.

Morrice also pointed to possible collaborations with The Laneway Project, an innovative new initiative working to change Toronto’s relationship with its laneways.

“More presence from the community is a solution for preventing crimes,” said Morrice, who often cycles through laneways in the community snapping photos of

unsecured garage doors and gates, and areas where graffiti and illegal dumping are becoming problematic.

“The Fixer” is his third resolution and involves identifying areas within 55 Division that need fixing from a

crime prevention perspective.

Morrice said this resolution will involve going around the community and talking with people about public safety issues they may have.

“It’s like the broken-window theory on a smaller scale,” he said, explaining by addressing smaller crimes like graffiti, bigger crime issues are less likely to develop.

Morrice’s fourth and final resolution, “Dawn to Dust”, is all about encouraging people of all ages to get active and have a stronger presence and sense of ownership in 55 Division.

One of the ways he’s proposing to do this is through a 12-hour tour through the city’s east end where the concept of “natural surveillance” is demonstrated through photographs of people enjoying the community at all times of the day.

Morrice is interested in receiving feedback and guidance from the community to carry out his 2015 crime prevention resolutions.

in the community and has a good grasp of local crime concerns.

One of the key ways he’s connecting with those in 55 Division is through social media.

Each day, Morrice goes through the crimes that have occurred in the area over the last 24 hours and shares that information with the community in an effort to help prevent further crimes from happening.

His social media posts usually include crime prevention tips to help people from becoming victims of such a crime.

“In a matter of minutes I can relay a crime concern to upwards of 15,000 to 17,000 people. Social media is a great tool for us to get information out and to get information to come in,” said Morrice, who joined 55 Division seven years ago as a front-line officer.

“I also look at crime trends and consider ways the police and the community can work together.”

Morrice also attends community meetings and meets with people who have concerns.

Focus on legacy of Pan Am Games

ow can Toronto optimize the legacy of the upcoming Pan Am Games?

What opportunities are there to create lasting change in our communities as a result of hosting the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer?

In this space last week, we wrote of how the Pan Am Path, an 84-kilometre trail being built to connect communities across the Toronto region, could create a living legacy for the city.

It’s not the only example.

Consider the facility construction and renovation that have taken place in Toronto because of the Games: The Pan Am / Parapan Am Fields at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. The CIBC Pan Am Park located along the shores of Lake Ontario, including Exhibition Place, Ontario Place and the West Channel. The renovated Etobicoke Olympium.

The track and field facility at York University in North York. The Aquatics Centre at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus.

We can make use of those our view facilities in terms of promoting physical activity and Take advantage enabling community particiin local events. There of all the Games pation are significant opportunities offers to Toronto to impact the lives of many Torontonians.

Consider that there’s an entire neighbourhood – the Canary District – in the West Don Lands being constructed that will serve as a temporary home for athletes this summer. Following the Games, that neighbourhood must integrate into the surrounding community and the city as a whole. How that transpires can serve as an example for other neighbourhoods when they experience a major development.

And it’s not just bricks and mortar examples. There are opportunities for local businesses. There’s the opportunity to learn more about another culture being represented at the Games. There’s the volunteer experience.

This isn’t about whether having the Games in Toronto is a good idea or not. We’re past that point.

This is about making use of what the city will have after the Games and building the best possible legacy.

There is potential to enable positive change on a grand scale.

Learn more about the Games. Learn more about the facilities and parks being built. Understand how you as a resident of Toronto can take full advantage of Games facilities to create a better lifestyle once the Games are done. Anything less would simply be a wasted opportunity.

Will residents sign blank cheque for Scarborough subway?

Predictably, Toronto council didn’t want to trouble itself this week with more questions about the Scarborough subway plan.

Councillor Josh Matlow dared them to do otherwise – submitting five fairly uncomfortable administrative inquiries poking holes in council’s plans to hike taxes and build an expensive three-stop subway along a route that had been slated for a fully funded seven-stop light rail line.

Questions asked, questions answered, Toronto council decided, voting overwhelmingly to approve a motion from Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker to receive the inquiries and not send them along to Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee.

The questions were answered by City Manager Joe Pennachetti as the rules require. Given those answers, one might have thought councillors would be interested in a little more talk. Matlow wondered

david nickle the city about the sunk costs the city will be responsible for paying on the cancellation of the light rail line.

Pennachetti said he’d report later, although leaked documents indicate it sits at $75 million. In 2013, they were estimated at $10 million more.

What will the new subway cost to run, now?

Pennachetti said $30 to $40 million a year for capital maintenance. It’s not known how much it will cost to run; it will depend on the service levels that council approves.

How much help the city will get for operating it is an open question.

What of SmartTrack and its impact on ridership of the subway? All of that will be factored into further studies emerging as the Scarborough subway environmental assessment unfolds, and the SmartTrack

preliminary work proceeds.

And what is that ridership? In 2006, the city estimated 9,500 people per hour. In 2013, the ridership was estimated at 14,000.

Pennachetti explained the new results came in a rush based on other variables.

In the end, only six councillors thought those questions required more study.

De Baeremaeker, with the blessing of Tory, carried the day and the whole matter is shelved.

After the vote, De Baeremaeker pointed out that many of the questions Matlow posed had been answered in 2013 when council made the leap from light rail to subway. And he accused Matlow of simply using those questions as a back door to reopen the matter and build light rail rather than subways in Scarborough.

Well, of course he is.

Matlow opposed the subway for those reasons in 2013, and he’s opposing it again now. Things change.

Among other things, De Baeremaeker is proposing another $150 million for a fourth station on the line.

In a scrum after the vote, De Baeremaeker wouldn’t rule out supporting an even longer route, for billions more, if the environmental assessment said it was a good idea.

Matlow is not the only one uncomfortable with this. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong voted against the subway in 2013 and still thinks there are problems. But that’s not the same thing as wanting to reopen the matter. The public wants to get on with things is the mantra; no one wants more debate.

There is one more question though: are Torontonians tired enough of debate to sign a blank cheque for a transit plan that’s looking more and more like a bad fit? Guess we’ll find out.

Fairmount Park Farm Market hosts cooking workshops The organizers of the Fairmount Park Farm Market have set up a series of hands-on workshops aimed at giving participants knowledge and skills for growing, prepping, preserving and cooking farm-fresh fare.

Led by experts, the PitchFork School Winter Workshop Series will feature workshops on lacto-fermenting, preparing winter soup stock, planning an easy veggie garden, preserving with bourbon and ale, making traditional ghee, cooking weeknight meals, making ricotta and preparing healthy, gut-friendly meals The workshops will be held at The Flying Pony Café, 1481 Gerrard St. E. at Rhodes Avenue or in the kitchen of Glen Rhodes United Church, 1470 Gerrard St. E., at Craven Road.

The first workshop, Fermentation: Regional Kimchi, took place Wednesday, Feb. 4; the final workshop of the series called Go with Your Gut is set for Thursday, April 2.

For each workshop, space is limited to 12 people, unless otherwise noted.

Fees include the cost of materials. Payment is required to reserve your spot.

Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre hosts Skate for Camp.

Skate for Camp raises funds for children six to 12 so they can attend Eastview’s Camp Mambo.

The goal is to ensure every child in the neighbourhood has the opportunity to attend at least one week of summer camp, regardless of family income.

Participants at Sunday’s skating party are encouraged to pledge $10, which provides healthy snacks for a week, $25, which covers the cost of one day of camp and $125, which covers the cost of one week of camp.

People can borrow skates. Skate for Camp is hosted by Toronto-Danforth councillors Paula Fletcher and Mary Fragedakis.

Skate for Camp will be at the Withrow Park rink, at Carlaw and Bain, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher and BeachesEast York Councillor MaryMargaret McMahon brought the hammer down on the Toronto Council Chambers Tuesday morning when they delivered a lectern and speaker’s mallet hewn from the branches of the famous Maple Leaf Forever Tree.

The political tchotchke are just two of the objects artisans have crafted from the silver maple tree that had stood on Laing Avenue in Leslieville for more than 100 years.

The tree is said to have inspired Alexander Muir to compose The Maple Leaf Forever – a song that for many Canadians stood for the country’s national anthem before the introduction of O Canada.

The tree was blown down during a storm in 2013, but that was not the end of it.

Thanks to a motion brought forward by Fletcher, city staff from the Economic Development and Culture, and Parks, Forestry and Recreation divisions gathered up the wood and made it available for public projects across the city.

“Currently over 400 unique pieces are being made from this tree and some of them will reside at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the Ontario Science Centre, the Royal

Ontario Museum and at the Canadian embassy in London,” McMahon said.

At Toronto City Hall, the tree provided wood for the restoration of the Speaker’s lectern, using the tree’s wood on top and also for a carving of the city’s logo. The lectern was refurbished by Dixon Hall’s Mill Centre.

The gavel meanwhile is all Maple Leaf Forever. Fletcher presented it to speaker Frances Nunziata at the start of the meeting, and by noon she had already put it to use, to cut off York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti as he tried to speak during a vote.

“It’s a very important part of council – it’s how the Speaker manages the crowd, it’s how she manages council,” Fletcher said. “The gavel used today by the speaker to tell one of the councillors to get back in order.”

Interacting with students is best, says principal

During a recent interview at the school, Nichols said she knew she wanted to be a teacher from the time she was in the second grade.

“I loved my teacher and I just wanted to do what she did and I’ve never changed my mind,” she said.

Nichols started her teaching career in 1991 at West Hill Public School.

Teaching students in grades 1 to 8, Nichols felt a desire to broader her influence beyond her own classroom and made the leap to a leadership role in 2000 when she started her new job as the vice-principal at Warden Avenue Public School.

After two years there, she decided to take a break from teaching to start a family and spend the formative years with her three children – Noah, 13, Ethan, 11, and Claire, 8.

Nichols returned to teaching in 2010 as the vice-principal at East York’s Crescent Town Elementary School.

In 2013, she took on her first principal position at Queen Alexandra.

The school is home to about 260 students in grades 6 to 8.

As a leader, Nichols said she tries to draw on all the tools in her tool kit and varies her leadership style based on the situation and her audience.

“I consider myself to be a very versatile and engaged leader,” she said. “The best parts of my day are when I’m with my students. Any opportunity I have to interact and be with them I take.”

Tammy Ross, a retired educator who was the principal at Crescent Town Elementary School while Nichols was the vice-principal there, couldn’t agree more. Ross,

who nominated Nichols as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals, called her colleague and friend an out-of-the-box thinker who tries to engage the students in ways that will keep them interested in learning about themselves and the world.

“In the short time she has been principal at Queen A, (Emma) has worked to give the students a positive learning experience, to build their self-confidence as well as to work collaboratively with the staff and community,” she wrote in an email to The Mirror. “... She is a very creative and skillful problem solver and passionate supporter of public education.”

Akela Peoples, president and CEO of The Learning Partnership, said great principals create great schools.

“With her extensive experience with inner city schools and courageous leadership, Emma Nichols has transformed Queen Alexandra Middle School from a place of disengaged youth, to one where students now see themselves as ambassadors of their school and future leaders,” she wrote in an email to The Mirror.

New patient care tower to be completed by 2023 >>>from page 1 “This partnership is a major milestone for Toronto East General Hospital,” Rob Devitt, TEGH’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

“It’s exciting to see the new patient care tower becoming a reality, a building that will cater specifically to our community’s needs and set a new standard in providing high-quality, patient-centered care.”

The new patient care tower, which

is expected to be completed by 2023, will also include an underground parking lot and courtyard along Coxwell Avenue.

Other aspects of the patient care tower project include the replacement of the oldest beds in the medical/surgical and rehabilitation units; the replacement of the mental health inpatient units for adult and child/ youth care; the consolidation of ambulatory care and ambulatory

procedures; and the renovation of select areas within and adjacent to the critical care units to improve space and expand the hospital’s cardiac catheterization program.

TEGH’s new patient care tower also wants to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification for excellence and sustainability.

“This is a positive step forward for the revitalization of the Toronto East

General Hospital, and I’m pleased our government is moving forward with this strong investment in public infrastructure,” said Brad Duguid, Ontario’s minister of economic development, employment and infrastructure, in a release.

Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Infrastructure Ontario are working closely with TEGH to build the new facilities, which will remain publicly owned,

publicly controlled and publicly accountable.

TEGHis currently in the midst of a major redevelopment, which aims to enable the delivery of efficient, accessible, high-quality patient- care and will replace some of the oldest and dysfunctional spaces at the eastend hospital.

High-tech office complex expected to bring 2,000 jobs to waterfront DAVID NICKLE

dnickle@insidetoronto.com Waterfront Toronto and Menkes Developments are teaming up to build a new high-tech office complex next to Sugar Beach on the waterfront – combining cutting-edge technology and design with some of the fastest Internet service in the world.

The so-called Waterfront Innovation Centre will be 350,000 square feet and is expected to be open and occupied within two and a half years.

The deal was unveiled Feb. 6 at the Corus Entertainment Centre with representatives from all three levels of government enthusiastically applauding the plan.

“This building I would predict will be a spectacular

success,” said Mayor John Tory, who touted Toronto’s attractiveness as both an innovation capital and a financial services hub.

“The reason we’re tops in the world of risk takers, innovators and new enterprises like this is we have places like this...

“We’re not named No. 1 city in the world to be in by accident.”

The deal between Menkes and Waterfront Toronto was touted as a no-risk venture for the public.

The land on which the centre will be built is owned by the city, and Menkes will do all the groundwork of finding tenants and establishing rental income before setting the value of the land – at which point it will purchase it at the new assessment.
