Riverside playwright Kat Sandler has taken a bit of a departure from her usual fastpaced style for her latest work, Mustard. For this 100-minute-long play, Sandler, who has lived near Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue for five years, has chosen to offer theatregoers a bit of whimsy and theatre magic. Mustard, part of Tarragon Theatre’s 2015/2016 season and runs until March 13, is described as a darkly comic fairytale about a mother and daughter navigating life after divorce. The play, which stars Sarah Dodd, Rebecca Liddiard, Tony Nappo, Anand Rajaram, Julian Richings, and Paulo Santalucia, tells the story of 16 year old Thai, whose imaginary friend, Mustard, has stuck around longer than he really should have. Mustard’s role is to help Thai cope with the divorce of her parents. “It’s a bit of a messy, comedic drama. It’s about family belonging and growing up, and the loss of love,” said Sandler, who also had an imaginary friend growing up based on a voice her father used to do. Directed by Ashlie Corcoran, Mustard is Sandler’s first play not written under her own banner. “It’s a bit of a departure from the majority of my work and I’ve had to let go a bit,” said Sandler, who in 2010 cofounded Theatre Brouhaha with her business partner, Tom McGee. Sandler said this opportunity allows her work to be

presented by a more established theatre company that has more resources. “It adds another level to my work,” she said. “It’s an exciting experience.” Tarragon Theatre, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary season, is a leading Canadian company for the development, creation, and encouragement of new work. Sandler was part of the company’s 2014 Playwrights’ Unit and developed Mustard during that time. Sandler started creating and performing in little skits when she was about eight years old, and said she’s always loved being on the stage. Summer jobs can inspire positive futures for youth

P
rime Minister Justin Trudeau celebrated his milestone of 100 days in office by marking what he hopes will be a new milestone for Canadian youth. Trudeau wants to get close to 70,000 youth working this summer, and the federal Liberals are committing massive amounts of money over the next three years to make that a reality. On Friday, he made a surprise visit to Toronto’s Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club where he announced the government would be injecting $113 million each year for the next three years to get young people in the workforce. The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees in an effort to help create summer job opportunities for students. The Trudeau government is our view on the right track to setting up students for success. Jobs today When people are offered help, there tends to be a ripple effect. create hope Support gives rise to more supfor tomorrow port, and a spirit of giving and receiving is created. At the centre of this decision is not political popularity, but an understanding that empowering youth today will make them the engaged adults of tomorrow. They will learn life skills by doing them. They will learn co-operation and interpersonal skills by dealing with employers, customers, and coworkers. They may develop meaningful friendships, build savings, and start dreaming of a future of possibilities. A job today equals an education tomorrow. A job today allows one to support her family in tough economic times. A job today gives a young person hope. The federal funding will be distributed to Canada’s 338 ridings. Areas that have higher levels of unemployed youth will get more funds. The program funds job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. Employers and students interested in the program can visit servicecanada.gc.ca/csj for more information. The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2016 has been extended until March 11, so there is still time to get involved.

Sadness at the heart of the Uber-taxi battle There have been few issues at Toronto City Hall so consistently suffused with sadness as the Uber-X ride sharing fight with taxi drivers has been this past 18 months or so. From the outside, it’s been easy to confuse that sadness with rage. At the early February meeting of Toronto council, taxi drivers’ rage was certainly on display: several had to be removed from the council chamber as they watched councillors step away from seeking an immediate court injunction to stop Uber-X from operating in the city. Last week, Paul Sekston, one of those taxi drivers, took that anger to the airwaves and announced the new United Taxi Workers’ Association would be staging a protest to disrupt the NBA All-Star Game and run-up to it. It would have been a bad scene had it happened, but it didn’t. The same day, Feb. 11, he and other members of the taxi industry had a
david nickle the city sit-down with three city councillors – Janet Davis, Glenn De Baeremaeker and Kristyn Wong-Tam – after which, they decided to call it off. What clinched it? They simply needed to hear city councillors say aloud the thing that is undeniably true. Uber-X, as it’s currently operating in the city, is illegal. And there it was: the heart of the sadness beating beneath the crumbling front of rage. Taxi drivers, or at least Sekston, need if not a hug, then at least some clear allies in what they perceive, correctly, as the fight for their vocational lives. Mayor John Tory has tried to provide some assurance after he mused about the inevitability of disruptive technologies in a way that seemed to be giving Uber-X a moral if not entirely legal break.
And from the perspective of taxi drivers seeing their livelihoods dry up, Uber-X has gotten an easy ride from almost everyone else on the legal front. Yes, it’s complicated. When cab drivers came to the Toronto Police Services Board demanding more drivers be charged, Chief Mark Saunders explained doing so en masse is legally and operationally challenging. And when cab drivers demanded Toronto enforce its own bylaw – passed just last fall – setting up requirements for UberX’s continued operation that the ride-sharing app and the drivers who use it couldn’t and wouldn’t meet, council demurred. Again, it was for strategic reasons: if an injunction can’t be heard for three months, and the city’s new regulations governing ridesharing apps will be before council in two, the entire matter may become moot. Meanwhile, Uber Canada continues its charm offen-
sive, delivering kittens to stressed-out office workers and experimenting with shuttle services to underserved communities near the downtown – and, of course, by undercutting taxi fares for customers who are becoming used to trading fare savings for the invisible risks of riding an unregulated service. And to add to the sting: the Toronto licensed taxi model isn’t a sterling alternative. While taxis are regulated, the vehicles more rigorously inspected and drivers more comprehensively insured, Toronto’s system of commodified plates and absentee owners still makes for an ugly feudalism under which drivers work now. It’s been awful to watch, no doubt awful to live, and it’s hard to see anything near a happy ending to it all.

Young ‘champions’ making a difference at school and beyond Leslieville P.S. class fill baskets for Syrian refugee children JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
Staff photo/Joanna Lavoie
A Grade 4/5 class at Leslieville Public School have learned about giving back through the Classroom Champions program.
Students from Darren Ball’s Grade 4/5 class at Leslieville Public School recently received a heartwarming lesson on the rewards of giving back. At the beginning of the school year, Ball’s class joined the Classroom Champions program, an initiative run by the Back to School Project Foundation, a Canadian registered charity that believes all students deserve to learn the skills of success. Under the guidance of their mentor, Olympic swimmer Ryan Cochrane, the students were challenged to come up with creative ways to better their community. After much discussion, they decided to surprise a classroom with individual bags of popcorn to show their appreciation. They’re also looking
into having a “buddy bench” installed at the Leslie Street school. Ball’s class took on a much bigger goal of designing and filling eight baskets for Syrian families and children who have been forced to relocate to Canada due to circumstances beyond their control. “We all donated and put stuff into the bins,” said Grade 4 student Liam Suter during a recent interview at the school. “We put in things for school like pencils, paper and glue and we also put in things for them to play with like stuffed animals,” added Émilie Gordon, who is in Grade 5. Aside from school supplies and toys, the bins also included words of welcome for their new friends. Grade 5 student Amber Littlejohn’s team even included a photo of Toronto in their box to make
the recipients feel welcome in their new home. The baskets were recently picked up and delivered to a Toronto District School Board reception centre where newcomer Syrian families go to learn more about how to enroll their children in school. Talia Coen said the experience has been a great one. “I feel really good because these people don’t really have any belongings. I just feel like we’re doing a really big thing,” the Grade 5 student said. Ball said the children have learned important lessons from this project. “This is something that’s going to follow them for the rest of their lives,” he said. “I’m really impressed and appreciative of my students for embracing this project. They’re thinking beyond the walls of this school and making a difference.”

Beaches-East York MP represents Canada at Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith has been selected to represent Canada on the InterParliamentary Union (IPU), an international organization comprised of more than 140 parliaments from around the globe. Erskine-Smith, who was nominated and acclaimed for a one-year term as the Canadian group’s president/chair Jan. 27, said he views this opportunity as a chance to help restore Canada’s role and standing on the world stage. He also said he’s looking forward to helping bring attention to two or three key issues his government strongly believes in on a global scale, notably human rights. “I’m excited for the future and I’m looking forward to representing Beaches-East York, but also representing the country as a whole,” Erskine-Smith
Nathaniel Erskine-Smith
said during a recent interview. On Feb. 8 and 9, the Beaches-East York MP was one of two Canadian representatives who took part in a two-day parliamentary hearing on the global war on drugs at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. While there, ErskineSmith spoke about alternatives to incarceration
for dealing with the issue and Canada’s approach to making marijuana regulated instead of viewing it through a criminal lens. “I think we can help move the global view of the public,” he said, pointing to directions taken that are based on evidence from a harm-reduction perspective. In March, Erskine-Smith will be attending a global conference on engaging youth in politics along with upwards of 650 parliamentarians in Zambia. While there, he’ll be giving the opening address on behalf of the Canadian delegation. Erskine-Smith has also recently been appointed to serve on the public safety and national security as well as access to information, privacy and ethics committees. – Joanna Lavoie

TTC announces boost to service Call it the funding gift that keeps on giving: the TTC announced this week it is expanding service on almost 40 bus routes, particularly during rush hour. The move, made possible with the introduction of 50 buses, comes out of a funding boost granted by the city to the transit commission last year that worked out to $95 million more for operational improvements. The money has helped pay for everything from more frequent service in non-peak travel times to the expansion of the Blue Night bus network. For a full list of improved routes, visit www.ttc.ca UP EXPRESS rides ATTRACT CROWDS wFREE

Just as the Bloor line gets ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary, an exhibit traces the development of Toronto’s subway network. Tunnel Vision: The Story of Toronto’s Subway is a collection of historical maps, photos, and artifacts tracing the history of underground transit, starting with the opening of the Yonge line in 1954. The collection is presented in partnership with the Toronto Transportation Society and will be on display at the St.

Options for Davenport, the resident group opposed to Metrolinx’s plans for a rail bridge in the neighbourhood, launched its own environmental assessment for the project. The group launched the study titled Our EA, Our Say at a launch party last week. Unlike the official EA, which will take six months to complete, the group said its study will focus on underground options already ruled out by Metrolinx for eliminating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. The group plans to take four months to finish the report as well as hold its own public consultations.
