Bowmore school principal publishes book about student JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com What could have been their worst nightmare has turned into one of the most blessed experiences for the east-end Stergiou family.

In May 2012, the family of five moved to the Topham Park neighbourhood near St. Clair Avenue East and O’Connor Drive with the plan their youngest child, Hercules, would start kindergarten at the nearby Selwyn Elementary School.

However, their little boy, who has a common form of cerebral palsy called spastic dysplasia, wasn’t able to get around properly at Selwyn and other options had to be considered.

“We were very surprised all schools weren’t accessible. It was a really big wake-up call for us,” said Hercules’ mother, Kristina Stergiou, during a recent interview.

After much consultation and several sleepless nights, the Stergious were referred to Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School near Gerrard Street East and Coxwell Avenue, the east end’s hub school for children with special mobility

needs.

Even then, there were still some challenges as Bowmore is outside the Stergious’ community requiring Hercules to take a bus to and from school. It also meant he wouldn’t live just down the street from his new friends and classmates.

In 2012, Bowmore also didn’t offer full-day kindergarten and there was

no space at the school’s daycare for Hercules, whose current daycare was out by Hwy. 404 and Sheppard Avenue.

In the end, Kristina left her job to drive her son back and forth to school and spend time with him before he went off to school fulltime.

She’s since returned to work but

is able to drop him off to in the morning.

Eldest daughter Desi picks her little brother up from school and together with sister Alli, 15, they spend time with ‘Herc’ until mom and dad get home from work.

“Bowmore has been absolutely phenomenal,” said Kristina, crediting the amazing support they’ve received from the staff and teachers at the east-end school, notably educational assistant Rosa DesChamps and teacher Erin Kalogris. “(Herc) is doing fantastic and the school has just given him the support to continue to grow and push forward.”

L i k e t h e St e r g i o u f a m i l y, Bowmore’s Principal Thelma Sambrook remembers the nervousness she felt when she sent her now-teenage son, David, 14, and daughter, Ashley, 18, off to school for the first time and how happy she was when they settled in and flourished.

The positive experience with Hercules Stergiou, who is now in Grade 1, inspired Sambrook to put together a colourful picture book called All About Me – Hercules: My

Year in Kindergarten.

Patrick Murtaugh, a physical education teacher at Bowmore, snapped the photos for the project, while Sambrook assembled it and wrote the text in the summer.

Published by the Toronto District School Board, All About Me – Hercules: My Year in Kindergarten was launched Feb. 4 at Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School.

“My inspiration for writing the book came from being in the eyes of a parent. This was a labour of love for me,” Sambrook said of the book, which aims to portray the spirited boy as any other child, just one who happens to have some mobility challenges.

“Really, I’m just (Hercules’) voice.”

The book retails for $10. Three dollars from the sale of each book is directed to SickKids Foundation.

Hercules visits Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children every six months to receive special injections in his leg muscles.

f we were to wipe off almost four years of dust from our crystal ball, the smoke would reveal a possible provincial election this spring. With that, comes uncertainty and, potentially, the province’s (and with it Toronto’s) transit file getting derailed – again.

If we are to take Metrolinx at its word, the provincial transit agency has put everything on the table when it comes to transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). At its recent meeting, a long list of options was presented by staff, which will then get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected officials.

More consultations? More waiting. And what feels like more of the same, which our view amounts to very little. Cynicism aside, Torontonians should attend Project any and all meetings when it comes to transit solutions. We deadlines need voices at the table. As many have to be met voices as we can muster.

With some projects now underway – the Eglinton Crosstown LRT; the Scarborough subway given the green light – and Metrolinx committed to a share of the subway relief line within 15 years, we have a shot at being part of the discussion.

And according to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans are not limited to one major project, but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid- and longterm.

However, there needs to be a maximum time allotment for dealing with any project – big or small. No more open-ended deadlines. Projects take years – sometimes decades – to complete; so too much lag in decision-making is foolish.

Each day we consult, every week we wait for another meeting, the longer it will take to actually finalize a transit solution for the GTHA. If Metrolinx is to embark on another series of consultations – the first round kicking off in March – we should be there to voice our ideas. With an initial short list of recommendations to be presented to the Metrolinx board in June, and a final list by this coming winter, things will hopefully become focused.

But when these projects will be completed is not so definite. A change in governments should not lead to changes to these approved projects. Deadlines have to be met. Decisions have to stick.

Councillor Del Grande exceeded expectations In my career as a journalist, I’ve only made two politicians angry enough to put me on their do-notreturn-calls black list. The first was former mayor Mel Lastman, who never got over the fact that I didn’t endorse him for mayor in the 1997 election.

The second was Councillor Mike Del Grande. In 2004, a year after he was first elected, he took me on a pre-Christmas tour of his ward and made some comments about the changing demographics there: specifically that white people were moving out as Chinese people were moving in. I recorded them, and reported them accurately.

They showed up in the Scarborough Mirror over Christmas. By New Year’s Eve, commentators from outlets across the country were saying the worst things about Del Grande.

And that was it for us.

For the next 10 years, Del Grande would not return

david nickle the city phone calls, speak with me or even acknowledge my presence – with rare exceptions, usually when I’d written something that made him angry enough to warrant a tongue-lashing.

Over the weekend, Del Grande made it known that he won’t be seeking reelection. I have not called the councillor about this.

So instead, I write this column: in part, as an open letter to a councillor who has spent a career throwing up his arms in frustration and anger at his critics and his colleagues – and at the same time, accomplished many of the things I think he hoped to see happen after he was elected in 2003.

Del Grande came to city hall with an accounting background, and he believed he was a person to sort out Toronto’s fiscal

woes. He wasn’t able to convince mayor David Miller, and that began seven long years in the wilderness.

When Rob Ford announced his intention to run for mayor in 2010, Del Grande was among the first to support him, and when Ford won, Del Grande’s support was rewarded with the job he first eyed: Toronto’s budget chief.

And no one can deny Del Grande worked that job hard. Possibly a little too hard, given the toll it took on his health. Unlike other budget chiefs, he took on the lion’s share of the work himself – often complaining of the long hours he spent at home, trying to fit the camel-sized realities of the cost of government through Ford’s needle-sized expectations of the price.

Deputations coming before budget committee might have been put off by Del Grande’s gruff manner of questioning. But he did use the answers he got to

put forward moderate compromises he hoped would get the final result through council.

And it almost worked.

But Del Grande quit the job in 2013, when council voted to add just a little more spending to his budget against his wishes.

As far as he was concerned, he felt “vilified.”

At this year’s budget meeting in January, he railed, quite accurately, against the lack of civility, and elsewhere has criticized, again quite accurately, the moral decline Ford has brought to the office of mayor.

And now, as Del Grande prepares to exit the realm for good, I hope he doesn’t think too poorly of the place he feels used him so badly. It may not have lived up to his expectations – but really, over 10 years here, he has only exceeded so many of ours.

St. Monica considers move to vacant Ulster Arms tavern JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Moving a church and food bank is no easy task, even if it’s just across the street.

Late last year, St. Monica’s Anglican Church at 1324 Gerrard St. E., just east of Greenwood Avenue, was forced to vacate its longtime home in a Little India-area storefront after a significant rent increase made staying there impossible.

Nearly two months later, the local church/food bank remains homeless.

“We tried to negotiate a new lease for a significant amount of time,” said St. Monica’s rector Rev. Nola Crewe, explaining when leases come up for renewal, landlords are free to charge “as much as the market will bear.”

In the case of St. Monica’s, that amount was almost double the $2,100 they were paying each month.

“We had tried negotiating for a long time and I’m sure they were as frustrated with us as we were with them,” said Crewe, adding in hindsight St. Monica’s had seen better days.

“The space left a lot to be desired,” she said, pointing to leaks in the roof and a sewage back up on the food bank side of the 1,800-square-foot storefront space.

There also wasn’t a wheelchair accessible washroom; an expense the building’s landlord wasn’t prepared to foot.

In the end, the 40 or so member congregation was left with no other option than to vacate its 10-year

home.

The roughly 250 people who make use of the food bank at St. Monica’s each month were redirected to the nearby Glen Rhodes United Church, while the majority of the 20 or so longtime volunteers who helped run it are now helping out at Glen Rhodes.

St. Monica’s, which used to have its own building several years ago on Hiawatha Road, isn’t your typi-

cal church.

Most of its members struggle to get by on social assistance and the local church isn’t considered self-sustaining as it relies heavily on the Anglican Diocese of Toronto to operate.

“We have very limited resources and we need to work within the means available,” said Crewe, who works for St. Monica’s part time and the rest of the time as a chaplain at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Needless to say, locating a new home for St. Monica’s has been a major challenge.

“It’s a frustrating experience and it’s taking forever,” she said Tuesday morning.

Ideally, Crewe said she’d like to reopen in time for Easter.

Just across the street from the former St. Monica’s is the historic east end tavern/hotel, The Ulster Arms.

Currently closed and vacant (except for some short-term renters on the second level), Crewe said The Ulster Arms at 1345 Gerrard St. E. would be a great new home for St. Monica’s.

“We tried for months to reach the owner but our calls weren’t returned.

Suddenly, we got a call back within days of getting the eviction notice,” she said, explaining that a move there would require expensive renovations.

Crewe said early estimates for renovations are at around $35,000, however the rent at The Ulster Arms would also be affordable at about $2,000 a month.

“I truly believe it’s going to happen sooner than later and it’s going to be such an improvement,” she said, adding The Ulster Arms provides more than 2,000 square feet of open space, a patio and main-floor washrooms.

“It’ll be a place where people can really feel at home. It offers so many opportunities and I know it will be a real magnet for the community once it gets going.”

Despite the red tape, Crewe said, in the end, it will all be worthwhile.

“I am really positive about it. It’ll be lots of work but there are lots of opportunities to serve,” she said.

Calls to the owner of The Ulster Arms were not returned as of press time Wednesday.

City warns residents to be vigilant of coyotes during the winter The City of Toronto says an increase in coyote visibility this winter is normal due to mating season and weather conditions.

A common feature of Toronto’s natural landscape in recent years, coyotes are more comfortable leaving parks and ravines in search for food because of the lack of people outside in January and February.

Foster parents needed for orphaned baby wildlife Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) is in urgent need of 20 foster parents to take in orphaned baby wildlife.

The only wildlife centre in the GTA, TWC is flooded with calls each spring to take in baby animals, some of which have been separated from their parents, injured and/or cannot stay with their family groups.

The centre is unable to meet the demand for all of the baby animals in need of help and is reaching out

to the community for assistance.

Foster parents undergo special training and receive support from TWC and operate under the centre’s provincial wildlife permits.

These individuals take baby animals into their homes, care for them and hand feed them until they’re old enough to be weaned and eventually returned to the centre for the last stages of rehabilitation before being released back into the wild.

Training is set to begin in the coming weeks.

Squirrel training Volunteers will start by learning how to take care of squirrels and will then receive additional training to care for more challenging species as their experience and skill level grows.

Anyone interested in becoming a

TWC foster parent must be at least 18 years old, have a quiet spot in their home where the babies can be kept, have a schedule that permits them to feed baby animals at least four times daily and be in good health.

Toronto Wildlife Centre is a registered charity focused on assisting sick, injured, orphaned and distressed wildlife as well as educating the public about wildlife issues.

Alex Hill finishes university hoops career with OUA scoring title Riverdale’s Alex Hill closed out his university basketball career in bittersweet fashion over the Family Day holiday weekend, easily winning the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) scoring title with an average of 26.2 points per game.

That left him second in the country with little chance of overtaking Javon Masters of the University of New Brunswick who led the country with 27.6 points per game heading into his final two games Feb. 21 and 22.

Hill’s University of Toronto Varsity Blues team, however, didn’t meet with similar success, finishing out of the playoffs with a 4-18 record.

The final weekend summed up their season, losing 92-90 to crosstown York University Saturday and 77-75 to Queen’s Friday (with Hill contributing 26 and 35 points, respectively).

He ends his career as U of T’s all-time point leader with 1,619 points in 86 regular season games as a Varsity

Blue. He becomes yet another family member to leave a lasting legacy with the Varsity Blues: father Sam was an OUA hoops all-star in 1985-’86; and mother, Pam, was a member of the varsity track and field team and was the Canadian national triple jump champion in 1987.

In an earlier interview, he said he hoped to pursue professional basketball in Europe. While he ultimately chose basketball, Hill, like his mother, was also good in the triple jump.

His highlight was a fourthplace finish in midget triple jump at the 2006 provincial high school championships for Eastern Commerce. He also finished sixth in triple jump at the Canadian junior national championships in 2007 and 2008. He also played single-A hockey for the Ted Reeve Thunder and double-A for the Leaside Kings.

Aaron Brown shatters indoor 200-metre record Aaron Brown, who grew up in east-end Toronto and represented Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, is doing his best to ensure the Winter Olympics, underway in Sochi, Russia, doesn’t steal all the thunder.

In his final year on a full scholarship at the University of Southern California, Brown set a new indoor Canadian record for the 200 metres with a time of 20.53 seconds at a weekend college meet in Albequerque, New Mexico.

His winning time was the fastest in the world this year and it eclipsed the previous Canadian record of 20.66 set

by Olympic gold medalist Bruny Surin in 1998.

Brown, who helped the Canadian 4x100 metre relay team to a bronze medal at last year’s world championships, grew up in the area of area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street, attending Bowmore Public sSchool and graduating from Scarborough’s Birchmount

Park Collegiate.

Besides track, he was also a star football player for his high school and suited up for the Scarborough Thunder club football team.

Brown also won the 60m dash at the meet with a personal-best time of 6.55 seconds, which bettered his own school record and tied for the top collegiate time in the U.S. this season.

Recognized by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) at its annual conference and trade show, Dilworth is one of just two veterinarians to receive the 2014 OVMA Award of Merit, a prestigious accolade that recognizes excellence in the veterinary community.
