JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Five of the 13 lifeguard stations in the Beach are set to be temporarily transformed into unique works of art during the inaugural Winter Stations Design Competition. Inspired by Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Warming Huts Art and Architecture Competition, the public art contest saw nearly 200 teams of international and local artists, designers and architects from 36 countries apply to take part. R AW D e s i g n , Fe r r i s + Associates and Curio are behind the open art competition, which launched in October. On Tuesday, organizers unveiled the list of the five finalists, who were asked to design installations based on the theme warmth as a guide. They are: ‘Sling Swing’ by WMB Studio from London/ Liverpool, U.K.; ‘Driftwood Throne’ by DM-Studio from London, U.K.; ‘Wing Back’ by Tim Olson, from New Hampshire, U.S.A.; ‘HotBox’ by Michael MacLeod and Nicholas Croft, Toronto; and ‘Snowcone’ by Diana Koncan and Lily Jeon, both fourth-year students from Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science. All of the designs are set to be erected from Feb. 13 to 16 >>>warmth, page 7
