Afrofest at Woodbine Park this weekend

It’s going to be a noisy and dusty month in Riverside as the City of Toronto and the TTC work to bring the streetcar track infrastructure at the Queen-Broadview intersection and adjacent roads/sidewalks up to a state of good repair.

This latest local track replacement project and intersection closure follows an equally challenging one at Queen and Leslie streets.

Understandably that work had a big impact on the local commercial strip and the Leslieville business improvement area (BIA) came up with a number of ideas to get people shopping and dining in the area despite the construction mess.

The music, art, culture, dance and food of the African Diaspora are set to fill Woodbine Park this weekend for Afrofest.

Presented by Music Africa, the festivities will take place Saturday and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

Afrofest will feature musical entertainment from more than 20 African and Canadian artists, a children’s village, free drumming lessons as well as 30-plus vendors selling African artifacts, clothing, fashion, cosmetics and food and drink.

The headlining act at this year’s festival is Petit Pays, one of Cameroon’s most celebrated musicians.

Some of the other notable international musical acts set to perform at Afrofest include Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble from Nigeria, Ruth Mathiang from Mali, Madagascar Slim from Madagascar and Resolutionaries Marimba Band from Zimbabwe, among others.

The festival also includes a youth stage showcasing young musicians, poets and dancers.

Woodbine Park is north of Lake Shore Boulevard East and east of Coxwell Avenue.

Don Was Here explores historical path of lower Don River JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A unique and interactive urban intervention project is giving people the chance to retrace the original route of the lower Don River.

Don Was Here, curated by Cabbagetown-based Labspace Studio, is one of several projects commissioned for the inaugural No. 9 Eco-Art Festival at Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Rd., which runs until Sept. 21.

The free outdoor summer art festival offers free concerts as well as seven eco-art installations that respond to the history of Todmorden Mills and the Don Valley.

Don Was Here is the only installation that goes outside the direct Todmorden Mills area.

“The festival is centralized around Todmorden Mills, but the organizers wanted something that was outside of Todmorden Mills to draw people in,” said John Loerchner, Labspace Studio’s co-director/curator.

Don Was Here does just that, he said, as it essentially tags and retraces the historical route of the

old Don River along the Lower Don Valley pathway.

Using historical data to accurately determine where the lower Don River originally flowed, Labspace Studio has created and placed several ‘Don Was Here’ tags along the bike path from Lake Shore Boulevard East up to Todmorden Mills.

“We found the map data intriguing to see how different the river was. … Even today, the Don River is an important waterway that still plays an important role in our lives,” Loerchner said, adding Labspace Studio is all about creating installations that help people have a new perspectives on the spaces where they live and play.

“It’s important to make people more aware of its history and conscious of the decisions we make for the future.”

Participants are encouraged to visit www.donwashere.com to view maps of the historical pathways of the Don River, peruse old photographs and tag, tweet and pin their own photos and comments on their self-guided walk.

possible through a partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, will also include two walking tours that explore the changing face of Toronto’s Don River Valley and the relationship between the river, the valley, and the city that developed alongside and around it.

Historian Jennifer Bonnell will lead the first walk Saturday, July 12 from 11:30 to 1 p.m.

A n a s s i s t a n t p ro f e s s o r o f Canadian and environmental history at McMaster University, Bonnell is the author of Reclaiming the Don: An Environmental History of Toronto’s Don River Valley as well as the co-developer (with University of Toronto Map and GIS librarian Marcel Fortin) of the Don Valley Historical Mapping Project.

Lost River Walks founder Helen Mills will lead the second Don Was Here walk Saturday, Sept. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A program of the Toronto Green Community, the Lost River Walk groups has worked for the last 18 years to name and map dozens of lost creeks.

The group has also accumulated an on- and offline archive of information about lost rivers as well as creating the Thirsty City Guides to water issues in the city; and developed the Lost Rivers Walks, storytelling tours of the city’s buried creeks.

Both tours will begin in front of Todmorden Mills and end at Riverdale Park.

Two heritage plaques recognize importance of city’s downtown east waterway JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com While its uses may have changed over the years, the Don River continues to play an important role in the lives of Torontonians.

Heritage Toronto, in partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Waterfront Toronto recently honoured the downtown east river’s cultural and historical significance by unveiling two heritage plaques; one of which recognizes the straightening of the lower Don River between 1886 and 1892 and the other which commemorates the historic lower Don River railway crossing.

“It’s quite a remarkable story here,” said Ward 28 Councillor Pam McConnell during the plaque unveiling event late last month on the western bank of the lower Don River, just north of the railway bridge, at the Bala Underpass.

The original eastern abutment of the first railway crossing over the Don River, which was constructed more than 158 years ago, can still be seen today.

Built as part of the Grand Trunk

Railway’s main line between Toronto and Montreal, the bridge was vital to industry and commerce as it connected Canada’s two largest cities and helped lay the foundation for Toronto’s emergence as a major

economic centre. A new bridge was built in 1892 using the original abutments from 1856, while the current elevated track for the Canadian National Railway was completed in 1930. This project raised the railway above the streets to allow for safer public access to the lakefront.

The elevated railway bridge was widened in 2007 to accommodate floodwaters, which would have gone westward through the West Don Lands.

The stones from the original 1856 abutment have been reused as informal seating and as part of the retaining wall for the Bala Underpass.

Flooding became (and still is) a major concern and public hazard as Toronto began to expand closer to the Don River.

In an effort to address this pressing issue, the lower Don River was straightened, widened and deepened starting at Gerrard Street East

down to Lake Ontario in 1892.

By the 1870s, it had become so polluted it was considered a threat to public health. As a result, the city undertook the Don Improvement Plan to both speed up and contain the flow of the low Don River in 1886.

This plan also led to the creation of new industrial and transportation corridors along the river’s banks.

This project freed up land for development, but failed to improve sanitary conditions and prevent flooding. To further address ongoing flooding problems, the Don River was widened at the lower Don River railway crossing in 2007.

A massive mound of earth, most of which makes up a new park called Corktown Commons, was also created in 2006 to further mitigate possible flooding of downtown Toronto.

Ford wrong to play favourites with media

ith Mayor Rob Ford’s return to civic politics after a stay in a rehabilitation facility, we would expect to see some lessons learned and some new attitudes heading into October’s civic election.

Ford has been a controversial figure at the best of times, with as colourful a political persona as his private one. It’s all made for curiously divisive leadership for this large, world-class city.

But when he begins to hold press conferences, picking and choosing whom he invites from the accredited city hall media gallery, we’re not quite sure he’s learned much during his time away.

Surely all news organizations deserve a place at the mayor’s table.

Metroland Media Toronto puts close to 500,000 newspapers on Toronto doorsteps every Thursday, with nine newspapers, including The Beach Mirror.

Then there’s our insidetoronto.com website. And we haven’t even mentioned the 100-plus other Metroland newspapers in the province posting the stories we our view tell on their own websites.

That’s not a bad household Mayor exludes reach and larger than the citizens when he Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and National Post picks favourites distribution combined on that day of the week.

But it wasn’t enough to avoid exclusion from the mayor’s first meeting after rehabilitation earlier this week, along with The Canadian Press and NOW magazine and others.

We expect sitting politicians and hopeful candidates understand people receive their news and information in a varied number of ways.

When you play favourites with the media, you shut the door to opportunity to reach citizens who voted you into office.

We really don’t get the point.

Surely he might have learned that through his trials and tribulations with the Toronto Star.

We sincerely hope Ford’s time in rehabilitation facilities has helped combat his personal issues.

Given his comments when returning to Toronto on Monday, he would like you to believe that, too.

We’d love to spend the months leading to the next civic election talking about policy and performance and not abuses. But being exclusionary to some media members continued a bad pattern of his prerehab practises and doesn’t create confidence in Ford having changed his practises.

The mayor has a chance to hit a reset button.

We’re not convinced he is prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

Ford must address his personal record Mayor a long way from being able to boast political achievements

t’s hard to know what to make of Rob Ford’s return to office.

In the speech he gave in front of a few reporters, Ford started off seeming quite contrite. He spoke of his enlightening experiences in the GreeneStone rehabilitation centre – that he overcame his own penchant for denial and understood his addictions to drugs and alcohol are diseases that will require constant, diligent treatment.

He pledged to keep clear of the dangerous and unhealthy associations that have supported his addictions.

He even apologized – to Torontonians and city councillors, and especially councillor and mayoral candidate Karen Stintz over remarks he made. And he acknowledged he is not asking for forgiveness.

david nickle the city That was a pretty good first couple of steps on a road heading toward redemption. But as the speech finished up, it was as though he stepped up onto the sidewalk, crossed a parking lot and disappeared down an alley.

It became clear quickly that Ford’s speech was an election speech.

He spoke of his accomplishments, both real and simply claimed: how the mayor stopped the gravy train, saved money contracting out garbage and saved public anxiety by making the TTC an essential service.

A few breaths after saying he was not asking for forgiveness, he announced his intentions

to ask for another mandate, and said he hoped to continue to be mayor for many, many years.

And when faced with a barrage of the many questions that still hang over his mayoralty, he packed up his papers and walked off, answering not one of them.

Now, to be fair, the mayor’s office and his brother Doug Ford had indicated for some time that the mayor wouldn’t take questions.

But a spontaneous answer or two might have gone some way to clearing away the stink of a selfsatisfied stump speech that hung in the mayor’s wake.

Given that he didn’t, the mayor might have spent the time talking about those hundreds of millions of dollars he’s saved taxpayers answering

some of the questions he might have anticipated, and apologizing more specifically for his racial, homophobic and sexist slurs.

He might have apologized to the city staff that he’s on record as having abused. He might have apologized to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair. He might have explained himself, in terms other than those that seem drawn from the pages of a recovery self-help book as much as they were from true epiphany.

The reality is Rob Ford is a long way from being able to boast about a political record, without first addressing the serious deficit in his personal record.

Toronto marks 10th anniversary of ‘Blue Flag’ beaches It’s been a decade since Toronto first raised the prestigious Blue Flag at its swimming beaches.

Last month, Environmental Defense, the program’s Canadian administrators, alongside representatives from Toronto Public Health, gathered at Woodbine Beach to mark the program’s 10th anniversary in Canada and celebrate Toronto’s eight Blue Flag beaches.

Canada’s first Blue Flags were raised in 2005 at Cherry, Hanlan’s Point, Ward’s Island and Woodbine beaches.

This year’s recipients include Bluffer’s Park, Centre Island, Cherry, Gibraltar Point, Hanlan’s Point, Kew-Balmy, Ward’s Island and Woodbine beaches.

“Ten years ago, the City of Toronto raised the first four Blue Flags in Canada,” Brett Tryon, Blue Flag Canada’s program manager, said in a release.

“Since then, the number of Blue Flag beaches in the city has doubled from four to

eight. This is a huge accomplishment and demonstrates the city’s commitment to have beaches that are clean, excellent for swimming, and protected for future generations.”

Safety first Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David McKeown, as well as representatives from Parks, Forestry and Recreation and the Toronto Police Services’ Marine Unit also attended the event to remind people about the importance of water safety.

“Swimming is an excellent way to stay healthy and keep cool,” McKeown said.

“Beach season is also an important time to remind residents to take precautions to avoid preventable injuries and accidents while enjoying water activities this summer.

“I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to teach your kids to swim safely and to make sure they are com-

fortable in the water from a very early age.”

The city offered the following tips to stay safe while enjoying the beaches: • keep children within arm’s reach at all times • swim at a beach with a lifeguard and swim with a friend • if you are a non-swimmer, enroll in a swim class • Visit www.toronto.ca/ health/swimsafe for daily updates on beach water quality • when out in the sun, wear a hat, use sunscreen and drink lots of water The Blue Flag program, which is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education, is awarded to bodies of water that have achieved international standards in four categories: water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and services.

Little Kickers aims to provide a positive introduction to sports for kids 18 months to seven years old.

“We get children at such a young age group, we have to teach them in a different manner,” said Frank Stanschus, managing director of Little Kickers, which launched back in 2002 by his wife Christine in the United Kingdom.

The organization has since grown with more than 200 franchises in 16 countries and several in the GTA including the Beach and East York.

Stanschus sees the sport of soccer gaining popularity with young children in this country.

While local soccer leagues exist within the city, Stanschus said Little Kickers’s focus is to provide skill-based programs by trained professionals in the community where kids live.

“The idea of what we do is that we want to be part of the local community,” he said. “We’d rather come into the community and don’t have (kids) travel forever to

play.”

With the Women’s World Cup tournament taking place next year in Canada, the sport should remain in the public eye. “If you start at an early age and you love it, then you’re going to love it for life,” Stanschus said.
