East-end dancers to perform at Pan Am opening ceremony JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The highly anticipated Opening Ceremony for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will feature the powerful footwork and intricate hand, arm and body movements of four east-end flamenco dancers.

Makeda Benitez, Pamela Briz, Angela Déiseach and Margarita Rigó are all members of the award-winning Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company (EESDC), which is headquartered at 401 Richmond St. W., in the heart of the Fashion District.

While Enrique, the company’s founder and director, is prohibited from revealing too many details about her dancers’ performance, she said it would be a “lovely presentation” where they’ll be part of a large ensemble of artists taking part in an original production designed and produced by Cirque du Soleil, the official creative partner for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games’ Opening Ceremony.

“With Cirque du Soleil, you can only imagine how beautiful and how exhilarating it’s going to be,” Enrique, one of Canada’s most celebrated Flamenco dance artists, said during a recent interview.

Her four-member team has been practicing for several months for the massive Friday, July 10 event, which will be held at Rogers Centre.

At age 15, Leslieville resident Makeda Benítez is the youngest dancer in the group.

The Rosedale Heights School of the Arts student, who is entering Grade 11 in the fall, was recently invited to apprentice in Enrique’s professional company.

“It’s been a really interesting experience and I feel very fortunate to be able to be part of such a huge and important cultural representation,” Makeda, who performed in her first professional Flamenco dance show late last year, said of her Pan Am Games experience.

“But I think the real thrill is knowing that my family in Cuba will be able to see this, even a whole ocean away. “ Briz, a professional fla-

pan am games entertainment menco dancer for more than two decades, said she’s relishing this unforgettable opportunity.

“It has been a great experience so far working on such a large-scale performance and being around so many talented artists,” said Briz, who has called the Beach Hill neighbourhood home for the last 10 years.

“The enthusiasm and excitement is very tangible at all the rehearsals. It is going to be truly amazing.”

Déiseach, who lives in the Little India area and p e r f o r m e d re c e n t l y i n EESDC’s annual production at Harbourfront Centre, said it’s been an “incredible experience” to work with such a talented group of artists.

“It will be a really powerful kickoff to the Games,” said Déiseach, who has been dancing with Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Academy for more than 18 years and is also

a longtime teacher at its affiliate school, the Academy of Spanish Dance (ASD).

“It has been an amazing experience working with Cirque du Soleil. ... Being part of the opening ceremonies is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Rigó, who lives in Scarborough, near Birchmount Road and St. Clair avenues, and is also an instructor at ASD teaching flamenco dance to children and teens.

Three years ago, Enrique applied for her company to perform in any capacity in the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Last fall, organizers invited her dancers to take part in the Opening Ceremony.

“We’re really, really happy,” she enthused. “It’s a privilege for us to be part of this, to be able to participate with so many other amazing groups.

It’s just a lovely feeling.”

The Watershed explores water sustainability in Canada JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The Watershed, a theatre production commissioned for the upcoming Panamania festival, part of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, has a number of distinct east Toronto connections.

Chris Abraham, who has called The Pocket neighbourhood near Danforth and Jones avenues home for 12 years, is directing the thought-provoking play about the politics of water in Canada.

Abraham, who has also served as the artistic director of Leslieville’s Crow’s Theatre since 2007, has been involved in the creation of the production for the last three years. The play is part of Aquaculture, a specially curated selection of art works about water.

C r ow ’s T h e a t r e a n d Quebec-based Porte Parole Productions are co-producing The Watershed, which is

Crow’s Theatre is a 32-yearold theatre company focused on new play creation that is set to open its first permanent home in 2016; Porte Parole Productions is headed by renowned theatre director and documentary playwright Annabel Soutar.

Abraham and Soutar and their respective companies previously worked together on the docudrama SEEDS, which tells the story of Saskatchewan farmer Percy Schmeiser and his lawsuit with American multinational seed and agricultural products company Monsanto.

Soutar’s daughters, Ella and Beatrice, as well as Abraham’s daughter, Hazel, played key roles in the creation of The Watershed by interviewing experts for the verbatim the-

atre production.

“They helped make the play very understandable,” said Abraham, a multiaward winning theatre and film director, dramaturg and teacher who has worked with many of Canada’s leading artists and theatres.

“All of the words in the play were spoken by real people.”

Abraham said The Watershed is a play that basically explores the federal government’s decision to cut funding to a 50-year-old freshwater research facility in northern Ontario called The Experimental Lake Area.

“It really begins as an attempt to understand the complex political, social and cultural issues around the decision to cut the funding,” he said.

“We take the audience right across the country and back again. There’s a Winnebago involved,” chuckled Abraham, who is also portrayed as one of the characters in the play.

Originally from Montreal, Abraham started directing plays when he was in his early

“I knew right away that I wanted to be a director,” said Abraham, who founded the Markham Youth Theatre when he was 14 years old.

“I really like the collaboration part of leading a team and I like the storytelling in a live context part of it.”

After high school, he went on to attend the University of Toronto before studying directing at the National Theatre School in Montreal.

Abraham, who said he enjoys directing a range of productions, recently completed his sixth season at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

Some of the other notable credits to his name include the Canadian Stage Company, Tarragon Theatre, Segal

Centre, Centaur Theatre, Globe Theatre and Theatre Junction.

In 2000, he co-founded and served as the co-artistic director of Bill Glassco’s Montreal Young Company, Three years later, Abraham directed the film adaptation of Kristen Thompson’s award-winning hit I, Claudia for which he won a Gemini award. It was also one of the top 10 films at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Watershed, which will be staged in French in Montreal in November before going on a cross-country tour in 2016 and 2017, runs until Sunday, July 19 at the Berkeley Street Theatre, 26 Berkeley St., just north of Front Street.

It’s also a place for artists and athletes. We just think The Distillery is a great gathering place.”

Free programming in The Distillery Historic District will take place Mondays to Thursdays from noon to 10 p.m., Fridays from noon to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

There will be no Panamania events at The Distillery on Monday, July 13 and Tuesday, July 21.

“We’ve got a phenomenal lineup outdoors with live music and culinary demonstrations,” Shipley said.

The Young Centre for the Performing Arts, the home of Soulpepper Theatre Company, will also be offering a selection of eight ticketed presentations during Panamania.

“In addition to the performances, we’ve also got repurposed shipping containers featuring art, artisans and one-of-a-kind work from the Americas,” Shipley said.

Panamania, the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games’ 35-day festival of art and culture, features more than 1,300 artists in 250 unique performances and exhibitions across Toronto showcasing the diverse cultures and artistic excellence of Ontario, Canada and the Americas through music, theatre, dance, visual arts and more from July 10 to Aug. 15.

he Pan Am Games are here and they are taking place right now, so it’s time for Torontonians to stop complaining and start showing off our great city to the rest of the world.

We all need to look beyond the personal inconvenience and embrace the bigger picture.

Yes, those HOV lanes are annoying but it will only be for a short period of time.

The Games are bringing a lot of positives both economically and culturally. Let’s celebrate that. In today’s edition we’re looking at the Pan Am Games’ impact on businesses, the community and some of the many people taking part in the Games.

One of those positives was this weekend’s celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct that saw the Pan Games Torch Relay ignite a our view Am community cauldron and the lighting up of the Luminous Veil.

Share your The lighting of the veil is one of the permanent legacies brought support and many about by the Games which also excitement include a number of world-class athletic facilities.

Also, athletes are thrilled to have the opportunity to show their stuff for hometown fans. It’s a rare opportunity for them, and one they will cherish. As Toronto sports fans, we need to share their excitement and show our support for our athletes.

As Torontonians we should also be embracing the chance to show those visiting from the 41 countries competing in the Pan Am Games we are a great city in which to live, work and play.

The Toronto Region Board of Trade looks at the Games as a chance to further establish the city as epicentre of global business. “From the business community’s perspective, we have 350,000 people coming into the GTA. These are folks who if they like what they see, will be coming back, and telling their friends. So hopefully we can look at this as a point in time where we can really showcase what we’ve got,” said TRBOT president Janet De Silva.

With athletic events now underway, there’s plenty of enthusiasm from volunteers and athletes. And if sports isn’t your thing, there’s no end of social and cultural events to enjoy during the Games. Enjoy!

Breaking up: it really is hard to do It is too soon to say whether the wounds of amalgamation have healed

T

hose of us who’ve been in and around Toronto and its constituent municipalities the last couple of decades probably don’t need the Fraser Institute to tell us what terrible problems amalgamation caused.

Before 1998, Toronto was six cities: North York and Scarborough and Etobicoke sprawling to the north and east and west, the tiny municipalities of East York and York huddling on the edge of old, urban Toronto.

When then-premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach announced

david nickle the city plans to amalgamate us all, everyone in Toronto not connected with the governing Progressive Conservative party knew instinctively it was a bad idea.

It wouldn’t save money.

It would make governing these cities of neighbourhoods more difficult, not easier.

It would, we were sure, be largely unpleasant.

We were, in the main, right. And now the Fraser Institute, in a study cutely subtitled “Breaking up is hard to do,” suggests the biggest reason for Toronto to stay together is precisely for that reason: re-establishing Toronto’s old municipal boundaries, or indeed new ones that might be more rational from a 21st century perspective, would be a big

job.

The question is, do the problems Toronto has now warrant that kind of work?

If we were talking a year ago in the dying days of the Rob Ford administration it would be an easy one to answer.

The shotgun marriage of municipalities had descended to such a dysfunctional state that suburban Toronto had elected Ford to its top job.

And although the mayoralty has passed to different hands, it is too soon to say whether the wounds of amalgamation have significantly healed.

It is probably also too soon to say that they haven’t healed, or that they won’t.

But as the Fraser Institute’s report notes, other municipalities have managed the split, and Toronto might too. If we were to do so, best not follow the example of Montreal, which ended

up with a jumble of small municipalities and a new regional government.

We would need some other model that took the lessons of history and the realities of the present into account.

In the meantime, it might also be healthy to recognize that there exists the simple possibility of separation: that the bikeriding, latte-sipping denizens of the downtown core might be able to debate in a different room from the suburban, fiscal conservatives of the old suburban communities, and each might elect a mayor according to their needs and aspirations.

Sometimes, there’s nothing to spur compromise in a relationship like the serious contemplation of its end.

Surrounding neighbourhoods reaching out to Athletes’ Village with handy guidebook JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Representatives from six neighbourhoods surrounding the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes’ Village in the West Don Lands have put together a handy guidebook to encourage athletes, officials, visitors and area residents to take in events, eat and shop in the area during the upcoming 2015 Games.

Called the NAVTO2015 Guide, the 32-page, full-colour booklet printed in English, French and Spanish, is being spearheaded by the South Eastern Downtown Network Alliance’s (SEDNA) Pan Am Coalition. The informal group is the successor to the Old Town Toronto Network and represents stakeholders in downtown east Toronto.

Robyn Posner, who serves as the marketing, events and members services manager for the St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood Business Improvement Area, is leading the project.

“It was definitely a group

effort. Being able to work together makes us stronger,” said Posner, who was also responsible for providing all of the content for her BIA’s pages in the guide.

“The six neighbourhoods around the Athletes’ Village felt it was important for us to create a comprehensive outline as to what (those at and around the Athletes’ Village) can do and all the things they can do at their doorstep.”

The areas featured in the guide include St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood, Corktown, The Distillery District, Riverside, Regent Park and Evergreen Brick Works and Pan Am Path.

“These six multi-cultural, diverse areas have a lot going for them – activities, restaurants and shops – so we thought it only made sense to put together an easy guide,”

she said. The NAVTO2015 project launched more than a year ago and has involved numerous meetings with representatives from each featured area.

Each neighbourhood will be funding 1/12th of the project’s total cost. The Ontario government has kicked in $10,000 for the guide, which does not include any advertising by forprofit businesses.

The NAVTO2015 Guide, which launched July 2, is included in the welcome package each athlete and official staying at the Athletes’ Village will be receiving. Tourism Toronto is also helping distribute the 75,000 copies of the booklet, which will also be readily available in each of the six neighbourhoods.

A companion website, www. navto2015.com, offers even more information about all of the happenings in the six neighbourhoods surrounding the Athletes’ Village.

Riverside BIA celebrates its Western Gateway Project The Riverside Business Improvement Area (BIA) is inviting the community to attend the launch of the second and final phase of its Western Gateway Project.

On Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Bridge at Queen Street East at the Don Valley Parkway, the BIA will unveil its new Riverside Wayfinding Markers and public art installation.

All of those who helped make the project possible will be recognized at the event, notably Rebecca J. Houston, who led the design of the banners that will frame the bridge; Nick Chin of OX Agency, which supported the branding of the monument; and Eldon Garnet, the bridge’s founding artist. The project was also made possible with the support of the City of Toronto and Councillor Paula Fletcher, as well as private sponsors Streetcar Developments, Hullmark Developments, Downtown Automotive Group, Ashlar Urban Realty,

Douglas Cameron’s Riverdale release party at Hugh’s Room JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com There’s nothing that isn’t Riverdale about Toronto singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Douglas Cameron’s album of the same name.

The nine-song album, which will be released tonight ( Thursday, July 9) at 8:30 p.m. at Hugh’s Room, 2261 Dundas St. W., just south of Bloor Street West, was entirely written, recorded and mixed at his small home studio in an attic apartment in the heart of Riverdale. It’s available for purchase on iTunes.

“I did all the vocals, played all the instruments and did all the recording and mixing.

It’s a one-man project,” said Cameron, who grew up in Midland, ON but has called the city’s east end home for the last 25 years.

“For me, Riverdale has been a real great place to work on

something artistic. The songs in this album are all about my life living in Riverdale.”

The special show on July 9, which will feature longtime collaborator/notable Canadian record producer Danny Greenspoon, will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Cameron’s 1985 album Mona with the Children. This album tells the story of a 16-year-old girl in Iran named Mona Mahmudnizhad who was imprisoned in the fall of 1982 and subsequently executed by Islamic Revolution authorities

for refusing to renounce her Bahá’í faith. Mona with the Children garnered world-wide attention for Cameron and for her story.

Cameron, a professional songwriter, musician and performer for more than three decades who received a Juno award nomination in 1986 for Most Promising Male Vocalist, plays a number of instruments including guitar, piano, drums, bass guitar, mandolin and banjo. He also teaches piano and is a well-known children’s performer known as Douglas John.

Cameron, whose music is deeply rooted in folk/blues/ country traditions, also works as a composer for film and TV as well as a guitar repairman and piano tuner.

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Competing in the GTA during the upcoming Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will surely be a career highlight for Team Canada softball pitcher Jenna Caira.

“I’ve never had the opportunity to play on my home soil (for such a major sporting event),” said the 26-yearold Beach resident, who has represented Canada at three International Softball Federation Women’s World Championships winning bronze in 2010 in Caracas, Venezuela.

C i a ra , w h o h a s a l s o competed in the 2009 and 2013 Pan American Softball Championships, was instrumental in helping her team win a silver medal in women’s softball at the 2011 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Born and raised in Richmond Hill, she has played softball for Canada’s 15-member Senior Women’s National Team since 2009.

“We have really great chemistry,” she said of the team, which includes players ranging in age from about 19 to 30, some of whom have even competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

“Everyone treats each other equally and respectfully. It’s a cool vibe,” she said, adding it’s that great energy

and spirit that has drawn her to try out for the team year after year.

“It’s a lot of hard work but it’s very rewarding and we’re representing Canada.”

Coming from a family that appreciates and supports active living, Ciara started playing softball when she was just four years old. Her older sister Danielle was into softball and just “had” to give it a try.

When she was about 10

years old, Ciara really started excelling in softball and started taking pitching lessons. While in high school, she lived for two years in Switzerland. Despite being so far away, Ciara continued training and getting her name out there. Her persistence and hard work paid off when she was offered a number of scholarships and accepted a full athletic scholarship from Syracuse University.

While there, Ciara was the first pitcher in the university’s softball history to accumulate more than 1,000 strikeouts.

She’s also Syracuse’s all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, starts, saves and innings pitched.

Just over a year ago, Ciara moved back to Toronto.

“I have a lot of good support and a lot of knowledgeable people around me who have helped me in my career,” said Ciara, who when not playing softball attends Seneca College where she’s working toward obtaining a diploma in public relations - corporate communications.

Pan Am torch relay tours the city’s east end JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games torch relay made the rounds of the city’s east end earlier this week stopping in Riverdale, The Beach, Leslieville, Riverside, East Toronto Chinatown and Little India.

The festivities kicked off the Saturday evening as the City of Toronto along with The Danforth Business Improvement Area welcomed the Pan Am torch with a community celebration that featured a full roster of entertainment, as well as the sixth annual Thrill of the Grill cookout on the Prince Edward Viaduct.

Television personality Tracy Moore lit the community cauldron during the celebration, which also included the long-awaited illumination of the Luminous Veil.

“This is a chance for Toronto to step up and so far I think we are definitely rising to the challenge,” said Moore, who said she was thrilled to be a part of such a monumental event for Canada and Toronto.

Mayor John Tory was also on hand to help countdown the seconds to the

pan am games torch lighting of the Luminous Veil.

Last Sunday, the torch relay started off its 36th day with a short community celebration at Withrow Park, which featured roaming theatre performances by Shakespeare in the Rough and Driftwood Theatre. Chris Chen, a U of T kinesiology student, carried the torch into the park near Logan and Danforth avenues.

The flame then headed westward along Danforth Avenue to Scarborough for an afternoon of festivities that included a City of Toronto community celebration at the CIBC Toronto Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House on Military Trail at Morningside Avenue before heading back eastward along Queen Street East through The Beach and paying a visit to the 27th annual edition of Afrofest at Woodbine Park.

On Monday the flame made a short stop in Leslieville at the S.H, Armstrong Community Recreation Centre. Etobicoke resident Adelle Dubczak departed the celebration carrying the Pan Am flame and passed it to Olympic figure skater/ North York resident Patrick Chan on Woodfield Road, just north of Queen Street East.

The torch relay then continued westward along Queen Street East to Regent Park before travelling back east along Gerrard Street East through East Toronto Chinatown, Leslieville and Little India.

Scarborough resident Beverley Robertson carried the flame as it entered the western boundary of the Gerrard India Bazaar Business Improvement Area (BIA). The Opening Ceremonies for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, the largest multi-sport event ever in Canada, are set for tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre.
