Electronic music fest returns Sunday

Left Field Brewery aims to mitigate neighbours’ concerns
BEACHES JAZZ
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The 14th season of Promise Cherry Beach Sundays, a weekly electronic music event featuring dozens of local and international DJs spinning, should be back on track Sunday after a two-week hiatus. On Sunday, June 21, paramedics and police were called to the east end of Cherry/Clarke Beach Park for a “medical incident”. Once there, they reportedly saw a larger-than-anticipated crowd and observed some other safety concerns. This led to the revocation of Promise Cherry Beach Sundays’ special event permit, said Irving Shaw, who co-organizes the parties alongside fellow electronic music lover, David Macleod. “When there are concerns about an event’s operation, the permits office revokes a permit until a meeting with all concerned parties can take place,” he said. An initial meeting with 51 Division Community Response Unit happened Tuesday, June 23. Another sit down with the City of Toronto’s Permit Office was held Friday, June 26. >>> PROMISE, page 12

Growing pains. That’s how Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher describes the recent challenges the city, some north Leslieville residents and the owners of Left Field Brewery (LFB) have faced when it comes to reaching common ground on the level of noise, especially on weekends, coming from the recently opened craft brewery on Wagstaff Drive. These complaints are what prompted Fletcher to put forward a motion before Toronto council recently expressing concerns about Left Field Brewery’s limited liquor sales license. The motion called on city council to direct staff from Legal Services, Economic Development and Culture, and Municipal Licensing and Standards to work with LFB, Fletcher and concerned immediate neighbours to come to a solution to reduce the noise impact by the craft brewery’s ‘By-the-Glass’ License opera>>> NEIGHBOURS, page 8
