Nothing stirs the imagination in east-end Toronto like the Old Don Jail. It was the site of Canada’s last hanging in 1962; the jail from which the infamous bank robbing Boyd Gang escaped not once, but twice; and it was the site, on the occasion of that second escape, of the CBC Television’s first-ever English language news report, delivered by future Bonanza star Lorne Greene. Alas, none of the jail’s sinister history will be marked in the naming of the new park in front of the structure at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street. The park, a part of the Bridgepoint Active Healthcare redevelopment, is currently the subject of an online vote to choose from one of seven names, culled from a larger list of suggestions from the public. “It’s a sanitized list,” said Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher. The seven choices, picked by a Toronto Parks staff committee are Freedom Park, Gatehouse Park, Governor’s Square, Jack Layton Park, Riverview Park, >>>VOTING, page 2
