Nothing stirs the imagination in east-end Toronto like the Old Don Jail.

It was the site of Canada’s last hanging in 1962; the jail from which the infamous bank robbing Boyd Gang escaped not once, but twice; and it was the site, on the occasion of that second escape, of the CBC Television’s first-ever English language news report, delivered by future Bonanza star Lorne Greene.

Alas, none of the jail’s sinister history will be marked in the naming of the new park in front of the structure at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street.

The park, a part of the Bridgepoint Active Healthcare redevelopment, is currently the subject of an online vote to choose from one of seven names, culled from a larger list of suggestions from the public.

“It’s a sanitized list,” said Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher.

Starting tomorrow, upward of 800,000 people are set to make their way to the Beach to take in the 26th annual Beaches International Jazz Festival.

The festivities, which run until Sunday, July 27, kick off this weekend at Woodbine Park with three nights and two full days of jazzy fun for the whole family.

Bloor viaduct under construction The city is working to rehabilitate the Bloor viaduct. The work, which will involve repairing deteriorated substructure components and improving the bridge deck drainage, will begin Monday and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2015.

These repairs will be done on and below the viaduct as well as on the portion of the viaduct above Bayview Avenue and the Don Valley Parkway (DVP). The project will also include repairing concrete on piers, abutments, wing walls and soffits, as well as the removal of Bell ductwork and manholes and repairs to structural steel, and cross-braces within the TTC right-of-way.

People should expect daily traffic disruptions in the eastbound bicycle lane on Bloor; nighttime closures of the DVP and Bayview Avenue for the duration of the construction period (closures of the DVP and Bayview will not be done at the same time); and the closure of the east shoulder of the northbound DVP during the duration of the construction.

The work will usually take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday with work after hours and on weekends as needed.

Overnight work should also be expected on weekdays and weekends.

An out-of-the-box experiment to incubate new business in the Gerrard India Bazaar is working.

Inspired by the pop-up shops on The Danforth, a small group of neighbours is working to bring a form of the initiative to Gerrard Street East.

But instead of helping open pop-up shops along the strip, the Gerrard East group is working on a pop-up window display concept where online or home-based business owners clean-up the front window area of an empty storefront and use it as a promotional tool while showing prospective tenants what it could be like to open a store in that location.

Moxie Garrett is an eight-year Leslieville resident who runs MerrilyMerrily.ca, an upcycled and consignment clothing e-store for babies and kids.

She was the first business owner to try the pop-up window display concept this spring in a vacant storefront at 1409 Gerrard St. E. “I’m on the Gerrard strip all the time and it’s just not an awesome place to be,” said Garrett, a mother of four who runs Merrily Merrily out of her home.

“The pop-up window was a chance for free publicity. It was a lot of work to clean up (the window), but it’s definitely been worth it.”

The landlord of that building landed a new tenant within three months, reported four-year area resident Michael Yhip, who is spearheading the project alongside fellow Little India-area resident Dawn Chapman, who owns Lazy Daisy’s Café at Gerrard Street East and Coxwell Avenue.

“The window display concept seems to be working. ... It’s building trust with the owners and showing early results,” said Yhip, who late last year founded The Bazaar Residents Association for those living south of Gerrard Street East.

During a meeting at her café, Chapman said she has been discussing the pop-up concept with various community groups and residents for close to a year.

“The idea’s been a long time coming,” she said.

together to identify, contact and develop solid relationships with property owners along Gerrard Street East from Coxwell to Greenwood avenues.

The group’s ultimate goal is to draw new, diverse and permanent retailers to the strip.

In an effort to learn as much as possible about pop-ups, the Gerrard East team also met with representatives from the Danforth East Community Association (DECA), which has been working to bring pop-up stores to Danforth Avenue since 2012.

The group has partnered with WoodGreen Community Services to hire two people to manage its successful program, which has facilitated the opening of more than 20 temporary storefronts along The Danforth from Greenwood Avenue to Main Street.

A handful of those once-empty storefronts now have permanent tenants, said Gay Stephenson, one of the economic development coordinators who run the ambitious program.

“It’s a huge process,” said Stephenson, a former realtor who owns property along Danforth Avenue.

An at-times frustrating process, she said it’s time-consuming to identify empty storefronts, find their owners and get landlords to agree to having a temporary tenant move in.

“You have to go through a lot of closed doors before you find one that is open. Relationships are what the project is really built on,” she said.

Happy to help facilitate a similar initiative along Gerrard Street East, Stephenson provided the Gerrard East pop-up team with information

about how to run the program as well as testimonials from happy property owners on Danforth Avenue, who have hosted pop-up stores.

One of the most notable obstacles to opening pop-up stores on Gerrard Street East has been the liability issue.

DECA, a registered not-for-profit, was able to secure liability insurance.

However, the Gerrard East pop-up team is a more grassroots group made up of concerned area residents and small business owners and has not been able to do so at this point.

“The clincher is liability insurance. It’s our biggest hindrance and a major legal challenge,” explained Chapman when discussing what prompted the pop-up window display concept.

About a month ago, a second pop-up window was set up at 1447 Gerrard St. E., just west of BJ Supermarket, which also owns the building where the second pop-up window is located.

“BJ Supermarket allowed us to go in and beautify it,” said Yhip, whose background is in finance.

The newest temporary window display is being put on by Lisa North, a Little India-area resident who runs Blumorpha, a home-based furniture redesign studio.

“It’s a great way to promote my business,” she said during a recent interview.

“The end goal is to encourage store owners to allow pop-up stores.

This is part of a step into that.”

Yhip said he’s excited about opening even more pop-up window displays along Gerrard Street East.

“There’s more to come. We believe strongly in beautifying the strip,” he said.

Guest columnist enjoys her first – and last – visit to Jilly’s “Ugh I don’t get it. Why do you ‘need to check it out’?”

That was the reaction I received when I said I was going to visit Jilly’s Exotic Dancing club before it closed Saturday.

I’ve lived in Leslieville for six years. I’m a proud supporter of east-end businesses, both old and new.

When it was announced Jilly’s was closing, I was excited to hear the building would be restored to its former glory, but I was also sad to see it go because I hadn’t visited it yet.

So on Friday, my friend Michelle and I went to Jilly’s.

I posted our visit to the “I am a Leslievillian” facebook page and to my personal Instagram account. The reactions were mixed from “You are so brave” to “please, let me know what it’s like”.

A couple of friends warned me to avoid the bathrooms and the food.

I read Jilly’s was closing because the owners had

Sure enough, I was right in front of the steel support beams helping to keep the building up. I was a little nervous.

The inside of Jilly’s was what I expected – worn and dated. I felt itchy. It didn’t help the seats were covered in fabric.

We felt safe in the club, as the doormen were constantly patrolling the floor.

The waitresses were pleasant and attentive.

By 10 p.m., Jilly’s was standing-room-only. The crowd seemed to be a mix of regulars and welldressed, 30- and 40-something people looking to say goodbye.

Over the course of the next few hours, Michelle and I enjoyed several closing-price $5.25 beers, used the bathroom and

ordered food. The bathroom wasn’t bad, although the dancers were using it as a smoking room between performances.

We ordered the French fries, as they seemed the safest option.

Our server looked astonished when we said we wanted to order – we realized it was the first time we’d smelled food.

The good news is we survived eating those fries; Michelle declared they were the best.

I’d heard negative reviews of talent at Jilly’s.

A regular told us management had brought in ringers for the closing week.

I thought it was refreshing to see dancers featuring a variety of body types, ages and ethnicities.

As a woman, it’s always comforting to realize most women have cellulite.

It quickly became obvious some of the performers are dancers and some are not.

The ones who could

dance were fun to watch and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Some of the performers would remove all their clothes, some would just go down to their underwear.

All were topless at some point.

Some of the performers had a fantastic sense of humour, which I was not expecting.

The women would dance on stage and after would walk around the room offering private dances advertised as costing $10 and, from what I could see, taking place in a back room.

By the end of the night, everyone was enthusiastically cheering the dancers, and even singing along to the music.

It was a fun and positive experience. I am now even sadder to see Jilly’s go, but I’m excited to see what it will become.

Residents talk traffic congestion along Eastern Avenue at community meeting

Councillor Fletcher seeks re-election

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Residents living near Eastern Avenue say they’re worried about traffic levels worsening as intensification gains momentum on lands to the south.

Higher traffic congestion, safety concerns for pedestrians and opportunities for new transit and cycling connections were some of the issues raised at a community meeting held at Ralph Thornton Centre on Monday in regards to transportation plans under consideration for the re-developing lands south of Eastern between the Don Roadway and Coxwell Avenue and stretching down to Lake Shore Boulevard East.

Participants had a chance to offer feedback directly to city planning staff studying how to better manage transportation in the south of Eastern lands, which are set to undergo a significant transformation as new commercial and residential development is introduced to the traditionally manufacturing area.

encourage transit, cycling and pedestrian transportation.

Development plans include a new film facility, which will include office and retail space and a hotel at 629 Eastern Ave., and a transit hub located inside the grounds of the former Unilever plant, which, after redevelopment, could potentially include a new GO train station, a Relief Line rapid transit stop and expanded service from Broadview Avenue streetcars to connect Lake Shore with the port lands further south.

But with potential new develop-

ment come fears of traffic overwhelming residential roads, particularly those to the north of Eastern, which are already being used by commuters and commercial vehicles seeking to avoid existing congestion on major arterials.

Councillor Paula Fletcher said she organized the meeting so staff could take feedback into account before new development is approved so traffic management measures aren’t forgotten.

Pixomondo to open in Leslieville An international visual effects and creative design studio is setting up shop in Leslieville at the Revival 629 media hub.

Pixomondo, which is known for its work on Game of Thrones and Star Trek Into Darkness, is opening a design studio in a renovated, 75-year-old brick-and-beam building at the Eastern Avenue facility.

Celebrating the grand opening of Corktown Common JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Corktown Common, a once-abandoned, post-industrial site just west of the lower Don River, is now officially open for all to enjoy.

Last Thursday, community members, stakeholders and representatives from all three levels of government gathered at the urban park’s pavilion to mark its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting.

Residents were invited to the park later that afternoon for a community picnic celebration.

“It is a very special day for the communities that came together 17 years ago to form the West Don Lands Committee (WDLC),” said Cindy Wilkie, a 20-plus year downtown east resident.

“We imagined the park as the centerpiece of a new sustainable neighbourhood,” she said. “We never, ever imagined that the park would be so magnificent. Thank you to everyone that made this happen.”

Four years in the making, the 18-acre re-naturalized green space aims to reconnect the long-neglected area southeast of the downtown core with the rest of the city as well as celebrate the area’s native ecology.

Roughly 19 times the size of Yonge-Dundas Square, Corktown Common (previously known as Don River Park) was built atop a flood protection landform designed to prevent a flood on the 245-acre area that extends over to the city’s Financial District.

Landscape architects Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc. designed the $27-million downtown east park, which was funded by all three levels of government.

“We can only do these things when levels of government work

together,” said Glen Murray, Toronto Centre MPP and recently appointed Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

Wa rd 2 8 C o u n c i l l o r Pa m McConnell echoed Murray’s sentiments.

Calling Corktown Common a “magnet for our community and a magnet for Toronto,” she said the new green space is a great example of “what you can do with abandoned land when everyone works together.”

She said Corktown Common is a place all can be proud of.

“This is an amazing piece of infrastructure. It’s remarkable. … It’s everything for everyone,” McConnell said.

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly said the park offers “a diversity of benefits; not only to the immediate community, but to the city as a whole.”

Calling parks “economic catalysts”, he said Corktown Common shows the world Toronto is a “progressive, thoughtful, stylish, energetic, dynamic place to invest your money.”

Mark Wilson, chair of Waterfront Toronto, said the park servers many purposes.

“This place is a great park for people; it plays a role as a great piece of infrastructure for the people of Toronto and it also creates economic value,” he said.

“We’re creating a real, diverse Toronto community. Who wouldn’t want to live here?”

The event also included a presentation of an artist’s rendering of the park to area resident Tedd Konya, who came up with the winning name for the new green space.

Corktown Common was developed with two portions: a dry or city side and a wet or river side.

Located on the western side of the park, the 8.9-acre dry/city side offers a hilltop playground, open field areas for organized sports and other activities such as picnics, sledding and concerts, a solarpowered pavilion with washrooms, a kitchenette, an exterior woodburning fireplace area, a naturalized playground and marsh area and a a splash pad with a rubber surface.

The wet/river side, just west of the Don River, features a 7.9-acre “urban prairie” including an upland meadow and lowland wet meadow – an important part of the park’s stormwater management system – as well as woody vegetation.

Specific plantings have been chosen to help maintain the integrity of the flood protection landform and prevent erosion.

This portion of the park connects with the existing bike and pedestrian paths in the Don Valley trails system. It also features a dog walking area.

Overall, the new green space will also have walking trails, multiuse bike paths a boardwalk and a performance/meeting place.

Councillors focus on themselves during meeting Council’s marathon July meeting stretched out for four days last week. It wouldn’t have gone nearly as long were it not for several juicy items irresistible to councillors in an election year: themselves.

Council spent a good chunk of Tuesday to Thursday talking about reports from, and the future of, the city’s accountability officers.

Time was spent extracting an apology from Mayor Rob Ford for robocalls; extracting a few months of salary from Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti; and not-quite extracting Toronto Ombudsman Fiona Crean from her job.

Each of these debates were extraordinary in their way.

The matter of Ford’s apology to Councillor Paul Ainslie was unique, in that Ford did in fact apologize for robocalling every house in Ainslie’s Scarborough East ward last year to tell them how he hadn’t consulted with

david nickle the city them about his vote against the Scarborough subway, when in fact Ainslie had consulted rather a lot.

There wasn’t much at stake in that matter: Ford has not done what the integrity commissioner has asked in the past, and gotten away with it without consequence.

There was a great deal more at stake in the matter of Mammoliti, who in the end lost three months’ pay over a $80,000 “gift” he received from a fundraiser the integrity commissioner maintained to be improper.

Mammoliti disputes many elements of the integrity commissioner’s report on the matter, but council was unswayed and voted to take $26,000 from Mammoliti.

Council did the right thing there, and also in a manner of speaking, in the matter of the future

of Crean. A critical mass of councillors, including those stung by her criticism, made the prospect of garnering the 30 votes necessary to extend Crean’s appointment impossible.

But a simple majority was all it took to punt the decision to the newly elected council in 2015.

It would have been an awful message to send to accountability officers that their future depended on maintaining good relations with badly behaving councillors.

Council took care of some other, real city business too during those four days – business that had nothing to do with themselves.

But even if they hadn’t, at least they were able to finish their penultimate council meeting on something resembling an ethical high-ground when it came to understanding their roles and obligations.

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair seconded the bill, which also had its first reading that same day. “We have before us the challenge of climate change, a challenge that calls upon

us to look beyond ourselves, beyond this time and place,�

Kellway told Andrew Sheer, the speaker of the House of Commons. “Arresting climate change is the world’s struggle. Everybody must play their part...We are, all of us, entrusted with the care of the earth we inhabit and the wellbeing of all those who inhabit it. We need, now, to act upon that responsibility.�

This bill, which the House of Commons passed in 2008, but died when Prime Minister Stephen Harper unexpectedly called an election that same year.

THE OPPORTUNITY Metroland Media requires a Traffic Coordinator for its Metroland Media Toronto location reporting to the Trucking Supervisor, this position will directly oversee the loading/traffic operation as well as have involvement in other areas of the distribution operation.

Position Responsibilities: • You will be responsible for the work flow process through monitoring independent contract drivers en tering and exiting the facility. Maintaining loading schedules & coordinating the delivery and removal of product flow • You will maintain consistent work flow by ensuring product is prepped for shipping in a safe, timely manner.

• Provide clear, concise communication to employees and contractors on operational policies and procedures, taking necessary action as required.

• Responsible for overseeing the loading staff and assisting the staging area as needed.

• Ensure a safe working environment in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Company Health and Safety policies • Produce and analyze production reports, taking action where necessary to meet internal compliance requirements & FDSA audit reporting • Strong team work skills a necessity • Other duties as assigned by the Trucking Supervisor Competencies, Skills and Experience: Time Management, Process Management, Drive for Results, Delegation, Building Effective Teams • Forklift equipment certificate or experience • Must be available to work all shifts: 1st Position: (Mon. 12:00 Mid.-Tues.12:00 noon) (Tues.12:00 Mid.-Wed.12:00 noon) (Wed.12:00-Mid Thurs. 11:00 am.)
