ALL THAT JAZZ
NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Three years ago, a friend asked Leslieville resident Sylvie De Brabandere to play for the Etobicoke Kangaroos, a club fielding teams in a provincial Australian rules football league. And now she’s seeking support to go to Australia in August to play for the Canadian national team (called the Northern Lights) in an international tournament. De Brabandere is most of the
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Lisa Shamai, a well-known, Leslieville-based caterer, is facing one of the biggest challenges of her life. Shamai, who has lived near Danforth and Logan avenues for the last 13 years, is battling an aggressive form of leukemia and is in immediate need of a stem cell donor. Fortunately, she’s of Eastern European Jewish (Ashkenazi) decent, a common ethnic group on the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, a Canadian Blood Services-run organization connected to an international network of bone marrow/stem cell donors. “I’m feeling hopeful and optimistic we’ll find a match,” said Shamai, who has donated blood and platelets on several occasions over the years but hadn’t even heard of the stem cell/bone marrow registry until recently. “People from my distant past are resurfacing and helping. It’s really touching.” If and when a donor is found for Shamai, she’ll basically get >>>REGISTER, page 10

And that’s already good enough for her to be able to commit to the 2014 International Cup, which runs in Melbourne, Australia, Aug. 9 to 23. The event >>>DE BRABANDERE, page 8

Enbridge gas main work and TTC track installation, has yet to be announced. As soon as the new start date is confirmed, details will be updated online and a news release will be issued along with an email blast and signage across the area. The full closure is being done for safety reasons as there’s a risk the pavement could collapse. Soil conditions are not stable enough to excavate the intersection one half at a time. Anyone with questions of concerns can email lesliebarns@ ttc.ca or call 416-981-7360.
