Riverside Talks helps community get to know each other REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com Riverside might be getting more of a community feel with a new public forum. The forum, Riverside Talks, is a series of public meetings set to take place the last Tuesday of every month.

The next meeting is set for July 30 at 7 p.m. at An Sibin Pub on the corner of Broadview Ave. and Queen St. E. The talks are being organized by William Chan from the marketing team of the Riverside BIA and who has called the community home for more than 30 years.

“Growing up I realized that there’s a bunch of organizations in the neighbourhood, but a lot of them seem a little bit fragmented,” said Chan. Since then, he said the BIA has become more organized. “One of the things that this (Riverdale Talks) will hopefully do is increase the conversation

between organizations so that everybody can collaborate a little more,” Chan said. Each meeting will begin with two or three community members introducing themselves, what their interests are and what they like about Riverside as a way of helping people to >>>TALKS, page 8

The South Riverdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) received a windfall this week and they have Mayor Rob Ford to thank. The centre received $46,195.65 from U.S.-based website Gawker’s Crackstarter campaign. The campaign acted as a fundraiser to purchase the alleged video of Ford smoking crack cocaine. The website made a commitment to donors to give the more than $200,000 raised to a Canadian drug addiction centre. “It’s huge. We’ve never gotten anything like this before,” said Lynne Raskin, CEO of SRCHC. “We don’t know what we’re going to use it for because we haven’t counted on it and not planned it.” The centre provides health services to people suffering from addiction among other physical and mental health issues. They serve more than 7,000 members of the community each year. “We’re full of ideas so it will be a question of sitting down and figuring out what’s >>>HEALTH, page 8

Stand-up paddle for multiple sclerosis Sunday

Rebecca field rfield@insidetoronto.com It’s time to ride the waves and feel the wind in your hair as Surf Ontario hosts its fourth annual SUP4MS, this Sunday. Hosted by Mike Sandusky and Grant Kennedy, owners of Surf Ontario surf shop, the fundraiser involves Stand Up Paddling (SUP) on Lake Ontario and raises money for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada. Stand-up paddling sees participants standing on a board, much like a surf board, and paddling across water. It’s a newer sport that has been gaining popularity over the past seven years. The pair, who picked up the sport five years ago, created the fundraiser in 2009 with a 65-kilometre paddle across Lake Ontario to raise money for MS. “My sister has MS,” said Sandusky, who is from Scarborough. “I was thinking about something that we could do to help raise money to support her and other people with MS.” Their first trek – from Hamilton to Toronto – lasted 14 hours and raised more than $6,000. “That was sort of the experiment

to see if we could do it the first year,” Sandusky said. “We sort of opened it up after that for other people to join.” The fundraiser has been gaining momentum over the past three years, with some participating in the 65-kilometre trip and others

opting to take shorter routes. So far, SUP4MS has managed to raise about $30,000. “The numbers are definitely growing,” said Kennedy, who lives on Glen Manor Drive in the Beach. “I don’t know how many people we’re expecting this year.”

SUP is an alternative to surfing during the calm-water summer months when surfers, such as Sandusky and Kennedy, aren’t able to get good waves until the fall or winter. “We started doing (SUP) on the lakes and people thought that we were kind of, like quirky, and would take pictures,” said Kennedy, who ended up getting requests from people for stand-up paddle boards. He and Sandusky ended up bringing orders of the boards into the country, then starting Surf Ontario, first in the Beach on Eastern avenue, then moving their surf and SUP board shop to Sunrise Avenue. For this year’s fundraiser, the pair decided to eliminate the 65-kilometre trip for a shorter, 25-kilometre route they hope will get more people interested.

“The long one was getting a little too long, and the weather wasn’t always the best,” Sandusky said. “We’d run into storms and as good as we could pick the right day...it wasn’t always the best.” Kennedy agreed. “Every (trip) that we did started off really, really good, and then we always hit a bad patch toward the end.” The 25-kilometre route leaves from Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering at 8 a.m. Sunday. There is also a shorter, 10-kilometre route that leaves Scarborough Bluff’s Beach at 11 a.m. The day finishes at Balmy Beach in Toronto. The pair are hoping the fundraiser will continue gaining participants each year and continue to raise money for people like Sandusky’s sister. “I felt I had to do something because she wasn’t healthy,” Sandusky said. “There’s not much you can do, you know, besides listen and try to be there. It’s going to help her and a lot of other people, that’s the general motivation to do something.” To participate or donate, visit www.surfontario.com/sup4ms. Donations will be accepted for a week after Sunday’s event.

Watch, participate in the return of Dusk Dances in Withrow Park REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com One of the more mobile art forms returns to Withrow Park this year, the home stage for the Dusk Dances Festival. In its 19th year, the festival showcases all forms of dance, from contemporary to traditional Indian, and runs from July 30 to Aug. 4. This year it will feature four dances that run nightly at 7 p.m. “It’s very different to create and perform outside than it is in a theatre,” said festival organizer Sylvie Bouchard. “In the park you compete with noises and with a lot of visual things that happen around you so it’s a very different experience for the audience and for the dancers.” Bouchard came up with the idea while sitting in the park in 1993, wanting to bring dance out of the theatre and into a more accessible arena for the public. “I thought that in a public park there are people there already,” said Bouchard, who commissions choreographers and dancers from different styles of dance each year to

give a well-rounded demonstration of dance. Dusk Dances goes on tours around the province and the country, but Bouchard considers Withrow Park to be the home stage of the festival. “It’s where we belong. It’s where people are very supportive of us and

want us to be there,” said Bouchard, who noted Withrow Park has had up to 800 spectators for the festival in the past. Each evening works as a tour around the park, fully utilizing its fixtures, trees, playgrounds and pathways. A host – this year Dan

Watson – brings the spectators from dance to dance across the park. “It’s a lot of people given that we make them sit down, get up, walk to the next site, sit down, get up, walk to the next site, sit down five times – it’s pretty good,” Bouchard said. This year, the tour will include a piece by Riverdale choreographer Susie Burpee that involves an outdoor boxing ring set up between trees in the park and a dance battle between dancers Yvonne Ng and Robert Glumbek from Tiger Princess Dance Projects. “They’re exceptional,” said Burpee, who lives at Jones Avenue and Gerrard Street. “It’s really nice to do something that I can tell my neighbours to come on down to and they can walk up the street.” “It’s a good way to get to know a community,” said Burpee, who notes the performances are a great way for people to get to know an art form they might not be familiar with. Carmen Romero, who is performing a flamenco dance to live piano at the festival, agreed. “It’s a really good high calibre of artistry in a very natural environ-

ment and it invites the public in to experience and enjoy dance.” The Riverdale community will also get to enjoy a performance involving a 1985 Chevette by the Throwdown Collective. “Myself and my two creative partners are creating a new piece on a car, in a car and around a car,” said Brodie Stevenson of the collective. Stevenson both works and lives in Cabbagetown, and has been performing at Withrow Park since 2007. “There’s usually a lot of people compared to other parks that we perform in,” Stevenson said. “It’s quite exciting, but it’s also slightly intimidating when you see that many people walking towards you in the park and there’s kids and dogs and strollers.” The Throwdown Collective is using the car as the finale in a trio of dances for Dusk Dances involving large live props – including a couch and some giant wooden boxes. Dances begin at 7:30 at Withrow Park, which is south of the Danforth between Logan and Carlaw. Visit To http://duskdances.ca

ur city is a bustling place where the day-today grind can take a toll. For those looking for a little back-to-nature respite, we’ve got the perfect adventure waiting for you, just steps away from your front door. In this edition’s special feature, we highlight local hiking trails and others across the city where people can go to spot wildlife, keep active, socialize and reenergize. Other stories we’ve collected online will take you butterfly watching along the Leslie Street Spit, jogging through the ravines of the Don River and exploring the ecosystems of the 250-acre Humber Arboretum in north Etobicoke. There’s a surprising number of hiking and walking trails in our city. There are so we couldn’t list them all our view many, within our feature. When you walk some of them Discover it’s easy to forget you’re in the nature in your middle of a bustling urban centre – like when you’re followbackyard ing the winding trails through the tall, dense forests of High Park. Others have landmark reminders, like the condo tower that looms over the meadowland of the Humber Arboretum. But all, some would suggest, have the power to refresh the spirit. The federal non-profit group Turtlefeather True Nature uses outings along these trails to help women who have experienced abuse gain confidence and reduce stress. It’s also a welcome outlet for groups like the Metro Toronto Fitness Club, who has been taking to the trails for years (nearly 50 in this case), seeking not only outdoor activity, but new friendships. The group meets weekly for social walks and organizes social activities on a regular basis. Though one wouldn’t normally associate hiking and city life, these protected green spaces prove the two can compliment one another and we hope our feature will prove to our readers that hiking is accessible here in our communities. So pack a lunch, grab the sunscreen (and bug spray) and head out on your own trail adventure. These green spaces provide a natural oasis that can’t be fully appreciated until you’re there. Take time for yourself, or bring the whole family and discover the great outdoors right in your backyard.

Council goes on subway shopping trip We’re going shopping! It looks like our municipal representatives are enthused about spending about a billion dollars to expand subway transit in Scarborough. Despite what must be discouraging statistics, our city has always been the strongest backer of transit. For example, the TTC’s operating costs per kilometre have soared and usage has not kept pace with population growth. Since amalgamation, every taxpaying household’s subsidy for transit has almost tripled to about $350, surpassing every other service except police and fire. Yet Torontonians’ need to support transit is essential. We are the primary beneficiaries, and neither Queen’s Park nor Ottawa would advance funds if property taxpayers didn’t make significant payments. It’s not that mayors past and present haven’t asked the provincial or federal

david soknacki beyond the headlines governments. The senior governments acknowledge partial responsibility for transit projects. But they have their own financial challenges. Both governments have been noncommittal to prioritizing subway expansion in Scarborough. Transit represents about half of the city’s debt. Back in 2000, council approved a five-year capital program of nearly $800 million for the TTC. By this year that figure has grown sevenfold. Interest expenses have become our third largest expenditure, now $260 annually per household. As unsustainable as these growth rates are, there is room for additional expansion, if council is willing to continue prioritizing in favour of transit, . Take our property-tax rate, for example. Our low tax level and minimal rates

of increase are the envy of our neighbours. The problem is each one per cent increase of Toronto’s tax rate only brings in about $20 million, enough to cover incremental charges, but nothing more. Recouping the entire project through city regular operations would require substantial tax increases, program cuts, or both. In fact council has shown itself completely adverse to considering new taxes. That leaves debt. Toronto has excellent debt ratings. As a result, council could raise enough debt, although interest rates might rise. This shopping trip begins painlessly and irresponsibly. Council can commit to spend a billion dollars. We can even pay the interest charges. The big catch is council is not capable of paying back the principal. David Soknacki is a former City of Toronto councillor and budget chief. Time to get off our hands, reader writes Lack of transit funding has been a problem for our city for many years and as long as our politicians sit on their hands, it will continue. Funding will be an election issue during the next municipal and provincial elections, and most likely the ones to follow. The time to do something has past now. It is make up time and the expense will only climb. Glenn Kitchen Editor’s note: Letter wr iters are encouraged to send their opinions to lday@ insidetoronto.com.

ALL THAT JAZZ: Top, Singer Saidah Baba Tabilah performs on the main stage of the Beaches International Jazz Festival at Woodbine Park Sunday. Below, Jeff Boyd and Sarah Thomas dance near the main stage. The festival continues this week: StreetFest returns July 25 to 27 with nearly 50 bands performing along Queen St. E. between Woodbine and Beech Avenue. Also, the Beaches Jazz Tune-Up Run & Walk takes place on Sunday, and don’t forget to grab something to eat at the Taste of Jazz / Gourmet Food Truck Extravaganza. The festival wraps up Sunday. FACT: WE’VE ALREADY PAID

% 100

OF THE AMOUNT RECOMMENDED BY AN INDEPENDENT ADVISORY PANEL.

MPAC, the municipal property assessor, thinks City Council should tax the airport property as if it could be a high-rise condo development. We agree with City of Toronto staff, that this is an “erroneously high assessment value1.” To date, we’ve already paid 100% of the amount of Payments in Lieu of Taxes recommended by an advisory panel. As for asking our passengers to pay more, we’re an airport, not a condo development site, and we don’t think we should be taxed like one. 1

Health centre feels ‘blessed’ by donation >>>from page 1 needed,” Raskin said. The news of the donation came in last week, the same week the centre unveiled a memorial. The installation is in honour of 79 people who have been to the centre in the past three years and died. The six-foot tall memorial sits beside the centre at 955 Queen St. E.

“To me it was a testimony to why we need extra resources to do the work because it’s hard, it’s important and we’re really committed to working with folks that a lot of people don’t want to work with,” Raskin said. “We feel quite blessed to have received this.” Four centres ended up getting evenly divided portions

of the money, including the SRCHC, the Somali Canadian Association of Etobicoke, North-York Unison Health and Community Services and the Ontario Regional Addictions Partnership Committee. Call 416-461-1925, ext. 223 to donate to the South Riverdale Community Health Centre.

>>>from page 1 get to know each other. Chan said he is hoping to get speakers from the Riverside BIA and Councillor Paula Fletcher’s office to talk at each meeting, and then open the floor to public discussion on topics community members post on the group’s facebook page at http://on.fb.me/12JSlox Chan said he hopes the

forums will remain constructive toward change, instead of just being critical of things happening in the neighbourhood. “I would like to see more focused answers and (for people to be) more open with a positive atmosphere,” Chan said. “If somebody is criticizing, they better have a good solution as well.”

The first hour will be discussions, with the second part showcasing entertainment or talks. “For the community to grow, I expect that everybody is aware of each other’s causes and what their view of change may be.”

Beach teacher and her students win TORONTO 2015 mascot competition MICHELE MCLEAN active@insidetoronto.com In the battle between a moose, owl, twins, raccoon, porcupine and beaver, the porcupine came out on top. Four Markham students, along with their teacher who lives in the Beach, beat out not only the other six finalists, but also more than 4,000 entries with the porcupine mascot they created for the Toronto 2015 Mascot competition. Pachi, the porcupine mascot, was unveiled by Pan Am/Parapan Am Games organizing committee (TO2015) on July 17 at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre (CBC), at 250 Front St. W. “I had no idea the girls would win,” said Mari Ellery, who teaches physical education at Buttonville Public School in Markham. “It was completely their idea. They did lots of research and they came up with the idea.” Students Michelle Ing, 13, Paige Kunihiro, 14 and Jenny Lee, 13 attended the unveiling. Fiona Hong, 13, was unable to attend. “We had no idea we were going to win,” Michelle said. The competition was about creat-

“I like reading Japanese comic books and I read that pachi means clap of joy,” she said, adding that’s why the girls chose it. The girls worked with illustrator James Caswell to create their final design. To ensure fairness, Caswell illustrated the Top 6 designs using the same colour palette and style while maintaining the integrity of each original design. The girls said they were very happy with how Pachi turned out. “We were happy with everything,” said Jenny. Getting involved Staff photo/NICK PERRY

ing a mascot that represented the Games and would be an ambassador. The porcupine entry made it down to the final six. Other entries included: a moose and an owl from Scarborough’s J.B. Tyrell school; twins from Scarborough’s Dr. Norman Bethune school; a raccoon from North York’s St. Francis de Salle School and a

beaver from a Mississauga family. TO2015 held an online voting contest and Pachi received more than 33,000 votes. “Through some research we found that porcupines live in all the countries participating in the Pan Am Games,” said Paige, explaining why they chose a porcupine. Paige came up with the name.

Ellery said she encouraged all her students to work on the mascot challenge and the school sent in 43 entries in total. “I thought it was a great way to get all the students involved,” she said. “It was an exciting competition for everyone.” Porcupines have more than 30,000 quills, but Pachi has 41, one for each of the Pan American countries participating in the Games. His colours are green, fuchsia, blue, orange and purple. He sports a Toronto 2015 hat and Pan Am/

Parapan Am wristbands. The CBC atrium was filled with kids at the unveiling hosted by Scott Russell and Carly Agro from CBC Sports. Olympic gold medallist for trampoline Rosie MacLennan and paralympic gold medallist and Parapan bronze medallist for wheelchair basketball Tyler Miller were also at the event rallying the children. “This mascot is one-of-a-kind,” Miller said. “It’s super cool.” When Pachi came out on stage hundreds of ribbons shot into the crowd and hundreds of balloons dropped from the ceiling. Following Pachi’s arrival Ian Troop, CEO of TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, congratulated the girls. “This is the Games of the people and this a creation of the people,” he said. “Pachi was the most popular. Pachi is going to be the face of the Games.” Bal Gosal, minister of state (sport), also thanked the girls. “We are here today to celebrate the new face of the Games. I can’t wait to join all the fans cheering at the TO2015 Games.”

The Toronto Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will feature world-class athletes from 41 countries across the Americas and Caribbean.

T.O STREETS APP ◗PEDESTRIAN-FRIENDLY

Find out if your street is pedestrian-friendly with the new Walkomics app. Based in the U.K., Walkonomics launched their new walkability app for Toronto. The free new app for iPhone and Android maps and rates every street in Toronto (more than 42,000 street segments) and scores each one in eight categories of pedestrian-

friendliness. Users can also add their own ratings. Walkonomics maps and rates each and every street for eight key walkability factors: road safety; easy to cross; pavement/sidewalk; hilliness; navigation; fear of crime; smart and beautiful; and fun and relaxing. The app was designed analyzing Open Data (http://bit.ly/ ZCekvT) from the city including traffic levels; pedestrian accident locations; crime statistics; number of trees on each street; slope of streets and; locations of pedestrian crossings. The Walkonomics app also allows residents and communities to add their own ratings, reviews and ideas for improvement for each street. The Walkonomics app is free to download at www.walkonomics.com According to the press release, many of Toronto’s walkways and trails gained the highest ratings of more than four stars, including the Waterfront Trail and Highland Creek Trail. Yonge-Dundas Square was rated as pedestrian-friendly and other streets rated as walkable include Nina Street and Woodfield Road.

LESLIE SPIT The Toronto Field Naturalists lead a flowers and butterflies walk on the Leslie Street Spit in Tommy Thompson Park, the perfect place to spot a monarch butterfly. Staff photos/REBECCA FIELD, JUSTIN TANG

WHERE DO YOU enjoy the outdoors in the city? Email us a paragraph about it, explaining why: bsrm@insidetoronto.com

Hiking the Leslie Street Spit Butterflies, flowers and wildlife found along five-kilometre man-made peninsula REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com At 10 a.m. one Saturday, the scorching sun beams down on Lake Ontario. It’s mid-morning and there’s barely a cloud in the sky. Even the rare Eastern monarch butterfly has opted to flutter slowly over a patch of bush. Red ants coat the roadway occupied by a small group of Torontonians sporting Tilley hats. They are observing different species of flowers, writing down their different findings in small notebooks. At the head of this troupe stands Bob Kortright. His pants tucked into his socks in case his walk leads him into the brush, protecting him against mos-

quitoes, deer flies and prickly plant life. It’s not the harsh woods of Algonquin Park or Timmins that Kortright and his group amble through. Instead, he stands on the reclaimed land of the Leslie Street Spit in Tommy Thompson Park. More than 500 hectares in size, the five-kilometre manmade peninsula juts into Lake Ontario in Toronto’s east end. As Kortright guides his followers through a Toronto Field Naturalists’ (TFN) butterflies and flowers walk, plants sway in the wind with the CN Tower in plain view behind them. T h e E a s t e r n m o n a rc h , Kortright said, has barely made it to today’s walk due to drought down in Texas – a transit zone

It’s a great experience to come out and learn about nature. I’ve learned quite a bit everytime I come out. – Brian Edwards

for the butterfly, which spends its winters in Mexico. Still, attendees point the butterfly out in excitement, continuing on their way, naming a few of the more than 50 species that have been identified at the park. “The monarch has had a really difficult year,” said Kortright who joined the TFN as a guide by request after cor-

recting a tour guide on a walk he attended one year. “The wasps and bees and flies are way more common. Moths are 10 times as common. There are 1,000 species of moths in Toronto.” Kortright, a Beach resident, guides the group pointing out flower after flower, butterfly after butterfly, along with the occasional weed, caterpillar, or tidbit about the park’s resources. “I think more people should be aware of this group,” said Brian Edwards from Etobicoke. “It’s a great experience to come out and learn about nature.” Edwards was looking to get out and work on his wildlife photography, and came out with the Toronto Field Naturalists

after hearing about people from some of his other weekly walks on the Bruce Trail. “I watch it (nature) on television, but to have somebody that knows plants and everything... I’ve learned quite a bit every time I come out,” said Edwards. “You can’t beat the weather. It’s great.” Kortright leads walks about once a month, but usually concentrates on the park’s more than 300 species of birds. There is a bird banding station on the spit to keep track of migratory bird patterns in the region. A bird banding group meets on the spit every Sunday from April 1 to June 7, and then again on Aug. 7 until November to coordinate with the times birds >>>SINCE, page 23

The Toronto Field Naturalists host about two walks a month in different locations across the city. Other walks on the spit are held throughout the year by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and the Toronto Ornithological club. Kortright, who helps at the Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station, said while birds are less common to spot at this time on the spit, the wildlife still needed some attention. “I like the spit. It’s one of my favourite spots,” said TFN

member Stephen Kamnitzer who biked to the walk from North York. Kamnitzer said he has been on hundreds of walks around the city to learn more about the wildlife it has to offer after guiding hikes for kids in the Rouge Valley. “It’s very nice that you can live in the big city, but it’s easy to get away.” Construction of the spit began in the 1950s and continues to grow in size as it’s being used as a confined disposal facility for the city’s construction waste. community Web video for subway riders winstructional The latest TTC web video instructs subway riders how to properly use the passenger assistance alarm (PAA). The yellow strip is found on all trains and is intended to quickly summon emergency services personnel to help someone in urgent need of aid. But as is pointed out in the fiveminute YouTube clip, 70 per cent of the 6,000 PAA activations in 2012 were for non-emergencies and resulted in more than 50 hours in delays to commuters. The video is the latest in a series intended to educate ridership about TTC issues. To see the video, go to: www.youtube.com/embed/sPrypYcw0mw announces system improvements wPresto

Presto now allows transit users to load the equivalent of a monthly pass onto their pre-pay electronic fare cards. The passes are also automatically renewable and are one of several improvements to Presto announced by Metrolinx last week. Other new features include being able to add 10 cards to one user account and being able to pay the concession fares for children, stu-

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT dents and seniors, which was not possible before. For more information about the new features, visit www.prestocard. ca changes colour scheme wGO

Commuters may be forgiven if they do a double-take the next time they board a GO Transit vehicle. That’s because the regional transit agency has decided after nearly 50 years to revamp its traditional GO Green colour scheme. A photo was posted online last week of a GO train locomotive and passenger car at GO’s Willowbrook Yard maintenance facility in Mimico sporting the new look, which now features two contrasting shades of green. The GO logo is also a darker green. GO spokesperson Anne Marie Aikens confirmed the colour change, which has already appeared on refurbished trains and buses. subway access expands wWi-Fi

It will be some time yet before all TTC commuters can surf the

Internet while standing on a subway platform, but two stations at least will offer free wi-fi access by the end of the year. The TTC announced it is ready to proceed with a pilot wi-fi program at St. George and Bloor Station starting in December. BAI Canada Inc, which is building a wireless network for 61 subway stations, has presented its installation and design plans for the project, which won’t be completed until the end of 2017.

City council will take no further action on installing “suicide barriers” along subway platforms to prevent people from jumping or falling onto the tracks. Presented at last week’s four-day council meeting, the motion from Councillor Anthony Perruzza called on the TTC to install the barriers at new subway stations planned for the Spadina north extension and retroactively at existing stations. But council balked at the idea due to costs for constructing and maintaining the barriers as well as revamping existing subway platforms. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. Celebrate the last weekend of July with brunch 4 eggs

A good brunch should have a mix of breakfast and lunch items. Visit www. insidetoronto.com/blogs/1312630/ every Thursday for new recipes.

Lightly toast the bread slices To serve, arrange two slices of smoked salmon on each piece of toast and top each with a poached egg. Spoon over the warm Hollandaise sauce and garnish with a little dill or tarragon if desired. ~ Recipe courtesy of Metro

this Blueberry French toast wEnjoy

1 loaf french bread 3 eggs 3 tbsp sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 1/4 cups milk 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 cup butter or margarine Blueberries for garnish

up some Blueberry balsamic vinegar wWhip

Syrup or eggs? With brunch, have both.

Lightly grease a 13x9-inch baking dish. Diagonally cut bread into oneinch slices and place slices into prepared baking dish. In a medium bowl, combine eggs, sugar and vanilla extract; add milk and stir until blended. Pour mixture over bread slices, turning slices to make sure they are well coated. Refrigerate overnight. Heat oven to 375 F. Spread blueberries over bread. In a small bowl, combine flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. With a pastry blender or two knives, cut

in butter until particles are the size of small peas. Spread mixture over the blueberries. Bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown. ~ B.C. Blueberry Council up some Eggs benedict for brunch wDish Hollandaise sauce

1/2 cup unsalted butter 4 1/2 egg yolks 1 tbsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed Salt and black pepper, freshly ground, to taste

Heat the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat to just under a boil

Place the egg yolks in a stainless steel bowl and whisk in the lemon juice. Slowly drizzle in the hot butter, whisking constantly until fully incorporated. Bring a pot of water to a boil and then remove it from the heat. Place the bowl over the pot of hot water, making sure it doesn’t touch the surface of the water Whisk constantly until the sauce is smooth and velvety and slightly thickened, about two minutes Season to taste and keep warm until ready to use. Assembly: 4 slices bread 8 slices smoked salmon

2 cups blueberries 500 ml balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp sugar Lime peel from 1 lime, cut in strips 1 cinnamon stick

Crush blueberries with back of a heavy spoon. Add ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer covered for 20 minutes. Cool slightly and pour into a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for two days. Place a strainer over a large bowl. Ladle mixture into strainer, pressing out as much liquid as possible. Discard solids. Pour vinegar into clean glass bottles; refrigerate, tightly covered, indefinitely. Use this in salad dressings or drizzled over grilled chicken or beef.

up this lunch dish Pasta with Chicken wserve 2 tbsp butter 1 tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 4 boneless chicken breasts, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch strips 2 shallots, minced (about 1/4 cup) 1/2 cup each sundried tomatoes, chopped and roasted red peppers, chopped 1/4 cup ground almonds 1/2 cup white wine 2/3 cup whip cream 1/2 cup almond milk 1/4 cup fresh basil 1 lb spaghetti

Cook pasta to al dente. Melt butter and oil in a saute pan. Season, then brown chicken until light golden and just cooked through; transfer to a plate. Add shallots and saute one minute. Add sundried tomatoes, red pepper and ground almonds. Deglaze pan with wine until evaporated. Add cream and almond milk, bring to a boil, stir until sauce thickens about four minutes. Add basil. Return chicken to the pan and simmer until just heated through. Drain pasta and reserve about one cup water. Add pasta into sauce and use pasta water if necessary for desired consistency.

Toronto council rebuffs proposal to reduce its size DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A petition from the Toronto Taxpayers Coalition demanding that city council immediately reduce its size by half was rebuffed by council late last week. In doing so, it may have set the stage for a battle at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), that could see voters elect a 25-member council as early as next year.

“We’ve been talking about going to the OMB, we’re prepared to do so, and we’re going to consider everything that happened today,” said Matthew McGuire, president of the organization that he said represents between 3,000 and 4,000 Toronto taxpayers. The group, which was formed following the 2010 municipal election, has been an advocate for many of the policies supported by Mayor Rob Ford.

When last month Toronto council supported going forward with a process to redraw ward boundaries in time for the 2018 election, the group launched a petition, demanding the move happen sooner and that council cut its membership in half. The City of Toronto Act includes a provision allowing a petition of 500 electors to force a municipality to vote on their proposal for redrawn electoral boundaries.

The petition submitted by the taxpayers’ coalition had twice that number. Under the act, if council refuses to deal with the matter within 90 days it can go to the OMB, and any decision they make can also be appealed there. Ford urged councillors to approve the smaller council. “I truly believe that we must do what the taxpayers want,” Ford said.

“They want less politicians and more action.” Many councillors suggested Torontonians wouldn’t be well served by fewer representatives. “You can reduce politicians,” said Councillor Adam Vaughan. “Keep reducing ’til you get to one. Lots of countries do that. It’s called dictatorship.”

i

Councillors debated the matter July 18 and voted 25-13 to deny the request.
