Lowe’s store JUMP SHOT coming to Danforth The rumours were true. A new Lowe’s home improvement and appliance store will be opening inside the former Target location at the Shoppers World plaza at Danforth and Victoria Park avenues. The new store is one of 14 new ones opening across Canada, Lowe’s Canada announced in a July 24 release. “These 14 new locations are a tremendous win for us in Canada, accelerating our growth across the country and bringing our total store count to 54 locations,” Sylvain Prud’homme, the Americanbased retailer’s president, said in a July 24 release. “We continue to receive a positive reaction from our customers on our store experience and this helps us reach additional communities more quickly.” According to Lowe’s, the 14 new locations, which includes the construction of two new stores in Mississauga and Ancaster, will also result in the creation of an estimated 2,000 new jobs. Lowe’s recently completed the $148 million acquisition of 12 former Target sites in Canada as well as the chain’s Ontario distribution centre in Milton. Opening dates for the 14 new stories will vary based on construction and permitting schedules.

If Canada is serious about hosting an Olympic summer games in Toronto, it will have to get serious about funding the $1 billion flood mitigation program in the city’s port lands and make good progress on the Gardiner Expressway said councillor Paula Fletcher. “The potential Olympic bid is very exciting from one standpoint, because right now nothing can be built at all in the port lands,” said Fletcher, whose Ward 30 contains the city’s eastern port lands, the likeliest location for potential Olympic facilities. “We have to make a decision immediately and get to work on it. And we can’t have the Olympics without construction >>>CITY, page 19

Louisville, Kentucky youth show support for Leslieville JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A random act of kindness by a group of teens from Louisville, Kentucky has made a big impact on those grieving the loss of Leslieville resident Scott Hunter, who co-owned Gerrard Street

East’s Grinder Coffee. Hunter was fatally shot the evening of May 2 as a result of an altercation with three people during an alleged armed robbery attempt while visiting Louisville for the Kentucky Derby. Shortly after his death, Louisville Metro Police arrested and charged

three teens – two males and a female – with murder. The morning of Friday, July 24, 23 members of Westport Road Baptist Church’s (WRBC) student ministry group briefly visited the east-end coffee shop to present a colourful painting of the skylines of Toronto and

Louisville inscribed with the word ‘hope’ in the top right corner. Youth group member Abby Johnston crafted the original piece. “I was really touched. I thought it was a really sweet gesture,” said Grinder Coffee’s >>>GRINDER, page 2
