“It’s an abstract design meant to bring many different facts of the community and people together. It’s meant to be a feel-

ing project,” said the large-scale mural’s creator Evond Blake, who also goes by the name Mediah.

“It’s open for interpretation.

Because there’s so much detail, different people see different things.”

The piece, which Blake called a “community landmark”, will span the east and west sides of the underpass.

Gas line repair causes traffic disruption The intersection of Leslie and Commissioners streets has been partially closed since Monday for an estimated twoweek repair to an Enbridge gas line.

The partial closure has closed off the portion of Leslie Street south of Commissioners Street (to Unwin Avenue).

If you’re approaching the intersection southbound on Leslie, you’re diverted westbound on Commissioners.

And if you’re approaching the intersection eastbound on Commissioners, you’re diverted north on Leslie.

The same lane is being used for both directions, and is controlled by police. Both entrances to the Canadian Tire plaza remain open.

Access to the port lands south of Commissioners is still available via Cherry (to Unwin Avenue).

The intersection of Leslie Street and Eastern Avenue

is now closed until Sept. 7.

The intersection was initially set to be off limits starting July 21, but was pushed back to avoid a major closure during the Beaches International Jazz Festival, which wrapped up Sunday.

T h e w o rk will entail new watermain installation, sanitary sewer connection, removal of old storm sewers, new storm sewer construction with added capacity, Enbridge gas main work and TTC track installation.

Drivers will be required to divert around the EasternLeslie intersection via alternate north/south routes Coxwell and Carlaw avenues and alternative east/west routes Lake Shore Boulevard East and Queen Street East.

Access will be prohibited to Eastern Avenue and Queen Street East from Leslie Street.

Gratitude Bag food drive gets its start in Riverdale JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Riverdale resident Grant Gordon has come up with an innovative way to help keep the shelves of the Daily Bread Food Bank stocked year round.

It’s called Gratitude Bag, a volunteer-based, door-to-door food drive.

Basically, volunteers leave a reusable, red canvas bag at the door of the homes in a selected area.

Residents fill up the bag with nonperishable food and leave it on the doorstep before dinner.

Sometime after 6 p.m., volunteers pick up the bags filled with food and deliver them to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

“Our goal is to attack hunger,” said Trevor Watt, a 23-year-old Beach resident who is serving as the program’s director of daily operations alongside downtown east resident Mackenzie Gilmore.

“We’ve seen some terrific results so far.”

In 2013, Gordon and his team did a small but successful pilot project in the Riverdale area and have done several more since, each time figuring out what works and

what doesn’t.

In June, Gratitude Bag held its first large-scale food drive involving 5,000 homes in Riverdale and the Pocket.

In the end, 30 volunteers collected 6.1 tonnes of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank. “(The bag) really works well.

People are so, so generous, especially if you make it easy for them.

Everyone’s heart is in the right place,” said Grant, who was able to get great deals on the 7,500 gratitude

bags as well as the printing of the program’s flyers.

“It just blows my mind.”

Gordon said he came up with the concept for Gratitude Bag after chatting with a friend who works at the food bank about how the shelves are full during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, but they’re almost empty during the summer months.

“If people don’t think about going to the food bank (in the summer), we’ll bring the food bank to their

door,” said Gordon, who has lived in Riverdale for close to 20 years, “Unfortunately, come summer time, the hunger problem isn’t top of mind for people.”

Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, said the need is still there as much as ever even when it’s hot outside.

“Summer can be a hard time for food banks and the people they serve. Donations slow down, but the need doesn’t,” she wrote in a recent email message to The Mirror.

“We have thousands of people across the city who rely on Daily Bread Food Bank as much during the summer as they do during the winter. Hunger doesn’t take a holiday.”

Gratitude Bag is aiming to fill that gap.

This summer, teams of volunteers have been holding smaller mid-week food drives each week.

“Even with few people home during the summer, we’re still getting great participation,” said Grant, noting on average people contribute 10 to 12 non-perishables per Gratitude Bag. The effort is expected to ramp up again once people are back to school in the fall.

“Our goal is to do another major run in the fall,” said Watt, who along with Grant hopes the program will expand to other neighbours and communities in the months to come.

“Gratitude Bag has the potential to really take off.

“We think this formula is the best way to run a food drive,” he said.

Collaboration critical in the last stages of Pan Am planning

he one-year countdown to the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games has begun. As of today’s editorial, we’re 344 days away from the Pan Am and 372 from the Parapan Am. There is little doubt this event will focus eyes on the Greater Toronto Area. The numbers are impressive: $1.14 billion budget; 7,600 athletes expected to attend; 49 Pan Am and 16 Parapan Am events; 15 upgraded sports facilities and 10 new world-class facilities. The figures alone set us up to host what will truly be a world-class sporting event.

However, it’s also a chance for Toronto (and other municipalities involved in the Games) to really showcase what makes us so great. Toronto, for one, will be on display and we’re definitely ready for it.

The city has communities from all 41 countries across Latin America, South America, the Caribbean and North America attending the Games. From the Colombian community across St. Clair Avenue West, the Brazilians along Dundas Street West and Jamaican communities along Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto is our view the place to enjoy them all.

There’s a lot to With it, the Games bring development for Toronto via new cheer about athletic facilities in North York Scarborough to the masfor the Games and sive 35-acre Athletes’ Village in the West Don Lands that will be turned into a mixed-use community after the Games.

But with all the accolades and excitement come some pretty important concerns, namely the impact on traffic, particularly in Toronto, which is already experiencing dramatic traffic issues. In a recent interview, Stephen Buckley, the city’s director of transportation planning, said it’s still unknown how much of an impact the Games will have on local traffic patterns.

However, the Games will also see new transportation infrastructure built, including the UnionPearson Express air rail link and improvements to Union Station.

Shovels are in the ground, and athletes, coaches and spectators will be here in less than a year.

It’s time for governments, communities, and Torontonians to get behind the Games in these last stages of planning.

Before we know it, it’ll be showtime and we need to make sure we put our best collaborative effort forward to make the kind of impression we can all be proud of.

Might some mayoral candidates step aside?

I don’t often find myself agreeing with my colleague Toronto Sun columnist Sue-Ann Levy, but I have to say she asked the best question at Monday evening’s mayoral debate in East York.

Taking on Rob Ford directly, Levy pointed out that with no supporters left on Toronto council, he had no hope of fulfilling the agenda he proposed.

Why not, she wondered, at some point quit the race and throw support behind a candidate who could fulfill that agenda?

Of course, Ford had no intention of doing any such thing and said so, making it clear that only Rob Ford could look after taxpayer dollars and if anybody should quit, it was those other candidates.

Here in the middle of summer, no one’s going to say anything different.

But whether anyone admits it or not, Levy’s question will weigh on the mind of at least two other

david nickle the city candidates between now and election Day Oct. 27.

David Soknacki and Karen Stintz are two candidates who’ve put forward serious enough campaigns to put them on the A-list for mayoral debates.

But at least so far as polls are going, neither has gained traction.

That’s not to say they couldn’t. Stintz has spent the term building her reputation as a councillor and TTC chair with a conservative bent.

Soknacki has been out of politics for some time, but he’s put forward a strong centrist platform and of all the reasonable and staid alternatives to Ford, Soknacki is surely the most reasonable and staid.

There is, in theory, yet time for both of those candidates to capture the imagination of voters.

In 2003, David Miller only started to gain momentum in the summer before the election – and by the time of the vote, he was the people’s choice for the next mayor of Toronto.

Graceful exit There is also time for a graceful exit – such as Sarah Thomson and Rocco Rossi both did four years ago, when it became clear to both of them their earnestly begun campaigns were going nowhere.

By the time that election rolled around, the election boiled down to a staring match between George Smitherman and Rob Ford, with only New Democrat candidate Joe Pantalone tagging along in a distant third place.

Thomson threw her support behind Smitherman, and Rossi just stepped aside, to let his volunteers and funders have a graceful exit themselves.

So will it likely go this

fall – and really, it’s too bad that it will.

Great candidates Because aside from Soknacki’s smart platform and Stintz’ bona fides, there are a number of different visions for Toronto that voters should take a look at.

Toronto criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind is running a smart, lo-fi campaign himself, preaching the gospel of tax-what-youneed-to-spend as sensibly as Soknacki.

But there is an inertia to celebrity, and that is why, barring some calamity, Ford will not likely heed Levy’s suggestion and throw in the towel until the last poll is closed Oct. 27 – while other candidates who might have a chance of running an effective council after that vote will step aside.

Artist felt ‘compelled’ to complete mural on underpass >>>from page 1 using aerosol, acrylic latex and ink, will feature mostly brown and beige tones on the lower portion and a range of blues on the top half.

Blake, who is marking 20 years of designing and painting graffiti-inspired murals, has wanted to do a piece on the local underpass for years.

“It’s been vandalized. I’ve

had my eye on (this underpass) for some time,” he said during a recent interview.

“It pulsated at me. I felt compelled to do a mural (here).”

In March, Blake submitted a detailed proposal to the city-run StreetART Toronto program and was awarded the funds roughly two months later.

Blake, who is also the artist

behind the freshly painted utility box at the corner of Woodbine Avenue and Gerrard Street East, started working on the 12-week mural project in late June.

Local filmmaker Nathaniel Fox-Pappas is documenting the project every step of the way.

Going Back to School Stress-Free Simple advice from Toronto Central CCAC Fall is around the corner and the return to school is on the minds of parents and kids alike.

While many children are looking forward to getting back in touch with their friends after the long hot summer, there are those who may be experiencing feelings of anxiety and stress at the thought of homework and school books. For those children who are in the midst of changing schools or grades, or who have had academic or social difficulties in the past, the approach of Labour Day can trigger feelings of extreme anxiety and in some cases, depression.

The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) has a team of specialized Mental Health and Addiction Nurses who work in Toronto schools, supporting students, parents and staff who are in need of education, advice and consultation on mental health issues.

Whether your younger child is returning to elementary school, or your teen is in the last year of high school, there are some general things that they can do to make the trip back to school less stressful. Following are some tips from Toronto Central CCAC about how to help children deal with the stress of returning to school: • Sleep – Sleep is one of the most important factors in a child’s mental health and well-being. Before Labour Day rolls around encourage your child to get a full night’s sleep so that she feels rested and ready to address the day.

A minimum of eight hours is recommended for children and teens, who sometimes may require more. Start your

child’s sleeping schedule a couple of weeks before school starts so that they’re well prepared and well-rested for the first day back.

• Talk – Does your child seem anxious? Has their behavior changed, are they acting out or withdrawing from you as the first day of school approaches? They may be experiencing stress related to school’s return and may not know how to articulate their anxiety to you. Open the lines of communication and start a discussion with them about returning to school.

Ask them how they feel, what’s on their minds, and what some of their fears or concerns may be. By being available and acknowledging their feelings, you will be one step closer to helping them manage their return to school.

• Eat – You are what you eat and so are our kids. A wellbalanced diet that is low in refined sugars and processed foods is the best bet for a child who may be prone to stress. Be sure to support your child in eating fresh fruits and vegetables as well as proteins that will allow them to feel both energized and healthier. A healthy

body will support a healthy mind and will, in many cases, reduce anxiety.

• Think – Mindfulness is a skill that even the young can follow. In an age where attention spans are even more limited due to the constant distractions provided by technology, teaching a child to turn off the devices and to practice basic mindfulness techniques can greatly help those who are suffering from anxiety.

“This mural is one piece of the puzzle in the transformation of the community,” said Fox-Pappas, who usually joins Blake when he paints in the early evenings, shooting footage.

So far, he’s amassed more than three hours of footage but the plan is to whittle that down to a maximum 15-minute short.

Documenting the Woodbine-Gerrard mural is a bit of a departure from FoxPappas’ usual experimental style and he said he is hoping it will be screened at The Fox Theatre on Queen Street East in the Beach this fall.

Fox-Pappas, who graduated from Ryerson University in 2009, has worked on several film projects including TAGER, a short film about the life and work of eccentric Toronto artist/actor, Aron Tager, as well as a series of surrealist/experimental films, notably Paresis Bloom and Ultrasonic Nativity, which both touch upon aspects of his life with epilepsy and right hemiplegia.

In 2011, Paresis Bloom was accepted and shown at the Bach Modern Experimental Video Art Exhibition in Salzburg, Austria.

Dusk Dances returning to Withrow Park Aug. 4 to 10 Dusk Dances is celebrating its 20th season of bringing highquality contemporary and traditional dance to public parks.

This year’s summer dance festival will take place at six parks across Canada including Withrow Park in Riverdale Monday to Sunday.

Performances will be held every evening beginning at 6 p.m. with dance classes followed by a live band at 7 p.m. Dances will begin at 7:30 p.m.

A Beach born and raised athlete was the top swimmer in the 14-year-old girls category at the Canadian Age Group Championships, which wrapped up in Winnipeg Sunday.

Penny Oleksiak earned five individual gold, shared in three relay gold with her Toronto Swim Club (TSC) team, and also earned three silver and two bronze medals – all in the 14-year-old girls category.

In short, she medalled in all 13 events entered.

Her individual collection is: • gold in 100-metre back, in both 50- and 100-metre freestyle, and in both 50- and 200-metre butterfly; • silver in 200-metre back, and in both 200- and 400metre individual medley; • and bronze in 200-metre freestyle and 100-metre butterfly.

Highlights include: • setting a national agegroup record (for 14-year-old girls) in the 50-metre freestyle.

Her winning time of 26.16 seconds eclipsed the previous mark of 26.26 seconds set the previous week at the Canadian Swimming Championships in Saskatoon; • just missing a national age-group record in the 100-metre freestyle by 0.10 seconds; • and shaving eight seconds of her previous best time to win the 200-metre butterfly in 2:16.29.

“I never expected these performances at all,” said Oleksiak in an interview posted on the Swimming Canada website part way

“I was actually pretty nervous for my races. But I’ve been training a lot harder this year and have gained a lot more confidence. It’s been a really good season and I want to keep the best times going into next year.”

She also helped her TSC team to gold in all three relays entered – 400-metre individual medley relay and both 400- and 800-metre freestyle, the latter also a national record for 13/14year-old girls.

The Toronto Swim Club was one of two clubs from Toronto to finish in the Top 10 overall with a sixth place finish while the Etobicoke Swim Club, the defending champs, finished second, despite having their home pool – the Etobicoke Olympium – shuttered for the season as it undergoes renovations in preparation for next year’s Pan Am Games. It’s slated for a Sept. 2 opening.

Oleksiak plans to head to

Monarch Park Collegiate’s International Baccalaureate program this fall after graduating Glen Ames Senior Public School after previously attending Kew Beach Junior Public School.

Oleksiak comes from an athletic family. Her brother Jamie, 21, helped the Texas Stars win the American Hockey League playoff championship (the Calder Cup).

The defenceman was tops in the post season in the plusminus category (which basically measures the differential between goals for and against that a player is on the ice for) with a plus-13 in 21 playoff games. He also played seven games with the parent NHL’s Dallas Stars.

Her sister Hayley, a Malvern Collegiate grad, helped her Northeastern University rowing team to a Top 20 finish at the U.S. collegiate rowing championships this past spring.

Prior to Toronto being awarded the 25-day, multisport event in 2009, a master plan was in place for a sustainable, mixed-use community for the disused and derelict former industrial site just west of the Lower Don River.

That plan includes 6,000 market-rate and affordable housing units as well as employment, commercial, institutional and educations areas along with parkland – many of the things needed and required to house the thousands of athletes and officials who will be coming to Toronto for the July 10 to 26 and Aug. 7 to 14, 2015 Games.

“This development is almost in perfect alignment for the master plan and the objectives for the Athletes’ Village,” said Denise McNally, a senior project manager with Infrastructure Ontario, the crown corporation that is serving as the project manager for the $514-million Athletes’ Village and all large/ small sports venues for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

Located close to many of downtown Toronto’s attractions, it will offer athletes and other guests a chance to explore and enjoy the host city’s unique cultural mosaic.”

On schedule and is on track for handover to TO2015 in early 2015, the Athletes’ Village is expected to be completed six months before the first athlete arrives.

Aside from being home to the Athletes’ Village during the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games, the city’s east end will also feature Games-related arts and culture programming through Panamania, a 35-day multi-disciplinary arts and culture festival that will run concurrently with the sporting events.

The Distillery Historic District is set to be one of the venues that will house the more than 25 unique commissioned works by Canadian artists in theatre, photography, dance, music, spoken word, fashion and visual arts.

The projects, which will touch on the themes of water, immigration and Canadian identity and have a special focus on Ontario and Canadian artists connected to the 41 nations participating in the Games, are made possible through $1.5 million in seed funding from TO2015’s Innovation and New Creation Commission and Legacy Fund.

Two east-end bridges are also set to be lit up as legacy projects in honour of the 2015 Games. Plans are in the works to illuminate the arches, railings and suicide barrier of the venerable Prince Edward Viaduct with LED lights.

T

hough planning and infrastructure builds are well underway for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am / Parapan Am Games, the city’s transportation officials have outstanding questions as to how traffic will be managed during the event.

The largest ever multi-sport undertaking for the Toronto region, the Games are projected to cost $2.5 billion, of which the province has budgeted between $75 million to $90 million for transportation management to ensure 7,700 athletes and coaches, plus some 1.4 million spectators get to their venues on time.

Eight new Games venues are located in Toronto, including an athletes village in the West Don Lands community, aquatics centre in Scarborough and an athletic stadium in North York. The Pan Am coverage zone extends from north of Toronto south to St. Catharines.

With a year to go, finalizing traffic concerns now would seem a welcome cushion for the province, which has had to deal with issues such as venue construction delays

and the removal of Ian Troop as Games CEO in 2013, replaced by Saad Rafi.

In Februar y, the province released a preliminary plan for managing Games traffic following almost two years of consultations between provincial and municipal agencies including the Ministry of Transportation (MOT), Metrolinx, Toronto, the TTC as well as the Games’ Integrated Security Unit.

By establishing reserved lanes and encouraging local use transit, the province believes it can reduce existing traffic levels by 20 per cent.

But how much of a traffic impact the Games will have on local traffic patterns remains to be seen.

“That’s sort of the unknown when you do big events that are, say, anomalies,” said Stephen Buckley, the city’s director of transportation planning.

“We don’t know where people are staying, we don’t know what venues they’re attending. We don’t know

where they’re coming from.”

“They may come by train, they may come in carpools, they may walk.”

Buckley, who – last week – introduced the city’s upgraded traffic control centre intended to modernize citywide monitoring of traffic incidents, said the city is in constant dialogue with Game officials in regards to the transportation plan.

“It’s coming along quickly and we’re going to have to start doing

things now,” he said.

One of the plan’s chief features is the establishment of a Games Route Network (GRN) along dedicated HOV lanes found on 400-series highways, Lake Shore Boulevard and other major arterials that span 150 kilometres in the GTA alone.

Dedicated route networks are now a must for international sporting events and the GRN will be restricted to athletes and personnel and attendees during the Pan American Games, running from July 10 to 26,

and the Parapan American Games which go from Aug. 7 to 15, 2015.

They will also be open for use by carpoolers, buses, emergency vehicles and accredited media.

Enforcement will be largely on a volunteer basis.

The Games will also see the debut of transportation infrastructure such as the Union-Pearson Express air rail link. Infrastructure improvements at Union Station and on Queens Quay are also continuing.

When it comes to co-ordinating transit, the TTC and the city have to work together to deal with traffic issues such as delivery trucks and illegally parked cars blocking busy streetcar routes, said TTC CEO Andy Byford.

“It’s got to be a joint team effort with the city to once and for all create clear ways for our vehicles to get through, and that can only to be to the benefit of Toronto ultimately,” said Byford following last week’s TTC board meeting.

The TTC is about to appoint a Games coordinator who will “obsess about the detail” of its transportation planning, Byford said.

Beaches jazz festival receives youth arts grant 1000 Monkeys Festival The Beaches International Jazz Festival (BIJF) has been awarded a two-year, $96,400 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to expand its multi-art programming for children and teens.

The news was announced July 19 during the festival’s first weekend.

“I’m so pleased to see an institution like the Beaches International Jazz Festival take on new challenges and inspire a new generation of artists,” said Beaches-East York MPP Arthur Potts in a July 21 statement. “In the spirit of jazz, this Trillium award will allow youth to explore their creative side.

This OTF grant will allow the festival to further exploit the synergy between music and the arts through the development of a yearlong program that includes a youth art exhibit, a mural program involving local schools, a volunteer program for high school students interested in fine arts and two new festival workshops,” said Helen Bulat, BIJF’s sponsorship coordinator, in the same release.

Thirty enthusiastic playwr ights are set to take o v e r L e s l i e v i l l e’s R e d Sandcastle Theatre Aug. 1 to 4 for the second annual 1000 Monkeys Playwriting Festival.

The team of writers will be spending 24 hours at the 50-seat, 450-square-foot storefront theatre at 922 Queen St. E. creating new theatre works.

Several area eateries will be providing food and drink for the creative crew.

The play writing session will be followed by two days of readings Sunday, Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 4 at 2 p.m.

Of the creations, three will be selected for productions in September.

Members of the public are invited to stroll by the Red Sandcastle Theatre any

time after 6 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday to show their support.

People are also welcome to attend the play readings Aug. 3 and 4.

Admission is pay-whatyou-can.

“Be prepared to read, if asked, as we have no idea what type of characters the writers will emerge with,” said Rosemary Doyle, Red Sandcastle’s artistic director, in a release.

Toronto City Council has approved a plan to secure an unprecedented $864-million investment over 10 years for capital repairs.
