Upwards of 170 people filled the pews of St. John’s Norway Anglican Church Monday evening to take part in a spirited all-candidates debate for those vying to represent BeachesEast York at Queen’s Park. The debate welcomed Green Party candidate Debra Scott, Conservative Nicolas Johnson, Liberal Arthur Potts and NDP incumbent Michael Prue. Journalist Rob Granatstein was the evening’s moderator. In typical fashion, the event began with each candidate sharing a few words about who they are and their vision for the riding and the province. A question-and-answer period ensued where candidates were asked to give their views on a range of topics including health care, education, affordable electricity, jobs and taxation. Community members, who were invited to submit questions for the candidates, were interested in knowing where their future provincial representatives stood on public transit, specifically how their party would pay for it. The 15th annual Muhtadi International Drumming Festival returns to Woodbine Park, at the corner of Northern Dancer Boulevard and Lake Shore Boulevard East, this weekend. This year’s event, which runs from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday features more than 30 local and international touring master drummers and drum groups on two stages including Amara Kante (Ivory Coast), Isshin Daiko (Japanese traditional), and Samba Kidz to name a few. The highlight of this year’s family friendly festival is acclaimed drummer Will Calhoun, who will be performing on the main stage Sunday at 7 p.m. The festival also includes a Long & McQuade interactive drum zone, food and drink as well as arts, crafts and drum booths. The Muhtadi International Drumming Festival, which will kick off with a paid event Friday at the ROM, is the only one of its kind in North America that celebrates the drum, its universality as an art form and its presence in all cultures.
