A sunny patio and toe-tapping Latin tunes were the perfect prelude for what’s to come at this summer’s 27th annual Beaches International Jazz

Festival, which kicks off July 8 to 10 with a Pan Am Welcome Series for the Games and its athletes/officials at Billy Bishop Airport followed by three weeks of jazzy fun in the Beach community.

ticians, funders and supporters gathered recently at the Balmy Beach Club to learn more about the summer festival.

“The 27th annual Beaches jazz festival will be the biggest and best ever,” said Beaches jazz founder Lido Chilelli.

Bill King, the award-winning festival’s longtime artistic director, gave a brief rundown of the event’s musical lineup and this year’s new features, including an additional week dedicated to celebrating the >>>THIS, page 6

Beacher John Knifton rides to conquer cancer JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Eight-year Beach resident John Knifton will be cycling 200 kilometres from Toronto to Niagara Falls this weekend during the eighth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer as a way to thank the medical professionals who saved his life 15 years ago.

He’ll also be raising funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the Top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

“It’s my way to give back for the amazing work by the medical team that saved my life,” said Knifton, who lives near Queen Street East and Beech Avenue.

In 1998 when he was 42 years old and living in London, ON, Knifton started getting debilitating headaches.

“I noticed they were becoming quite frequent and more severe,” he said. “It got to the point I never left my house without a pocket full of Tylenol.”

Despite numerous visits to the doctor over the course of a year, no one could figure out what was wrong until one Friday night he collapsed in the shower and was

rushed by ambulance to London Health Sciences Centre (University Hospital).

Once there, Knifton was assessed by neurosurgeon Dr. Andrew Parrent, who sent him for an MRI scan.

“He was asking the right questions no one ever had,” said Knifton, who

a few hours later finally found out the cause of his migraines: a malignant tumour the size of a baseball in the frontal lobe of his brain.

Parrent postponed his vacation and assembled his team to operate on Knifton the next morning.

“My life basically turned upside down within one night. Dr. Parrent asked me if I had a will ready just in case,” Knifton said of the complex life-saving procedure.

“Several of my friends and family members came by my house that night to offer their well wishes.”

Knifton was wheeled into the operating room early the next morning for 14 hours of surgery.

After three or four days in intensive care and a few months of recuperating at home, he’s now cancer-free and fully recovered with no long-term damage from his ordeal.

“It was somewhat of a miracle,” Knifton said.

“I’m enjoying every day since my surgery and I feel thankful I had the right people behind me and the family support.”

Knifton, who will be taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer with his girlfriend Lynette, has been training for the challenge for the last three

or so months doing several longhaul bike rides every week from The Beach out to Port Credit.

His 10-year-old daughter, Cameron, has been a great source of inspiration, he said.

Knifton is also just a few hundred dollars shy of reaching his personal fundraising goal of $2,500 for the cause.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised more than $119 million for personalized cancer medicine including research, treatment, education and care at The Princess Margaret since it was established in 2008.

Residents, police and politicians are all doing their part to help make a stretch of Danforth Avenue from about Woodbine to Greenwood avenues safer.

Their actions are sparked by a number of recent incidents of violence in the area.

Sheri Hebdon, Danforth East Community Association’s (DECA) chair, said the volunteer-based residents group is focused on highlighting the positive aspects of the emerging neighbourhood and building on them.

“We want a walkable, safe and vibrant neighbourhood and the main street is key to that,” said Hebdon, adding DECA is currently in the process of reviving its safety committee and is planning on organizing safety walks along Danforth Avenue with residents and business owners.

“Our goal is also a vibrant nightlife. We’re not against people socializing (on The Danforth) day and night and we want businesses to come to the neighbourhood.”

Another way the group has responded to recent incidents of violence in the community is through the creation of a new “Danforth East Means to Me” mural at Coxwell Parkette during last weekend’s 100In1Day festival.

Late last month, police officers from both 54 and 55 divisions did a walkabout along the north and south sides of Danforth, stopping to chat with business owners and residents about safety concerns.

“We’re letting people know about the increased police presence in light of the recent incent and in the summer we also step up patrols,” said Const. Jon Morrice of 55 Division’s community response unit.

Morrice said police will be working with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to ensure bars along this stretch of Danforth Avenue comply with the rules.

In reaction to the recent incidents of violence in the area, Councillors Paula Fletcher and Mary Fragedakis have organized a Danforth Community Safety Town Hall Tuesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. at the WoodGreen Offices, 1491 Danforth Ave.

Improved transportation should be a Pan Am legacy I

magine a legacy from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games where people get around this city in a more efficient fashion.

Given the preparations being made for the Games’ traffic influx, it’s not an unrealistic hope.

Hundreds of thousands of additional people are expected in the city and the Greater Toronto Area for the Games next month, so it’s important for everyone to do some transportation planning.

This challenge on our roads will be in addition to other planned road construcour view tion projects during the summer months.

Toronto stands Key to this planning process – for residents, businesses and to benefit after visitors – will be understanding Games are over the tools and resources available to help get around the city.

This week a web-based transportation planner, accessible at www.2015gamestripplanner.ca, was launched by the province. It provides real-time traffic details, such as road closures, traffic speeds, HOV lane locations, a booking feature for accessible parking spots and more. An app is also available for download on Apple, Android and Blackberry devices.

That announcement comes a day after GO Transit unveiled its enhanced service plans for the Games.

These include more service on routes that serve major events and that Games tickets can be used as valid fare on GO on the day of that event.

There’s an additional opportunity from all of this transportation preparation that stretches well into the future: applying what’s being learned.

Traffic is not a new issue to the city. What successes can be shared from these preparations? What lessons can be learned? We have to study the traffic patterns that unfold during the Games. We have to measure the impact of initiatives such as HOV lanes. Surely there are aspects of the web trip planner that can be co-opted for travelling within the city after the Games are done?

With the transportation planning, there are additional potential benefits for the city – not just for future special events, but for day-to-day life.

That’s what a legacy is all about.

Toronto council will have to deal with budget shortfall at some point

emember the 2015 budget?

It’s been a few months now, and there’s been a lot of water under the elevated highway, as it were, so it’s understandable if you don’t. The takeaway: property tax increases were kept reasonable, in spite of the fact Toronto was hit with an $86-million shortfall due to housing costs downloaded by the provincial government.

Council dealt with that shortfall with some cuts, and a $60-million “loan” from the city’s capital investment program: money that will have to be replenished over the next several years.

As dubious councillors voted to approve the scheme, Mayor John Tory promised that soon he would be offering a

david nickle the city plan as to how best to pay back that loan to the city’s capital investments. Two per cent cuts to spending across all departments was one of the ideas bandied about.

This week, Toronto’s budget committee received and passed on Tory’s more refined plan, which amounted to not much more – and in important ways considerably less – than that.

Tory sent a letter to the committee, asking that city departments and cityfunded agencies like the TTC all be asked to find two per cent savings. The letter is not legally binding – only council as a whole can give direction to the

city’s civil service – but it’s clear enough as far as it goes.

Tory goes on, however, to ask for some other things: he would like to make sure the property tax increase remains at or below the rate of inflation, and wants the city to continue to fund public transit in an aggressive way.

Oh, and these efficiencies mustn’t lead to any reductions in service.

On June 9, the city’s budget committee had a look at the letter and sent it off to city staff. As budget chief Gary Crawford noted, these kinds of letters have come out of every mayor’s office since Mel Lastman.

There have rarely been times their advice has been taken to the letter, and Crawford admitted after the meeting that over the next few years council will

probably have to figure out some other measures in order to finally balance the budget.

Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks, something of a critic on these matters, put things more bluntly.

“There will come a day when we have a stark choice between reducing the services we deliver to people and finding a way to pay for them,” he said. “Last term, we had a mayor incapable of facing that choice. I’m hoping this council is a little more adult because the longer we put this off the worse it gets.”

I guess we’ll see just how bad it gets over the next few years.

Part of the streetscaping plan for Leslie, the work will begin at Lake Shore and run north toward Eastern Avenue. New sidewalk and curbs will then be constructed and decorative pavers installed.

Pedestrians should use the sidewalk on the east side of Leslie when walking between Lake Shore and Eastern. Access by foot to the Tim Hortons/Wendy’s/FreshCo plaza will be maintained via the plaza intersection during the construction work.

A single lane in either direction will also remain open during the work, however traffic lanes will be shifted to the east side of Leslie.

Coxwell-Fairford intersection work to resume

“It’s going to be such a great space,” Fletcher said.

Work on the parkette improvements and installations at Coxwell and Fairford avenues has started. The new contractor is expected to be on site for about 15 days and will be removing stones, installing curbs, sidewalks, trench drains, a seat wall and new lights as well as planting shrubs and plants on both sides of Fairford Avenue.

All remaining work will take place off the road in the local park spaces. Occasional lane closures may happen in offpeak times for materials and machine operations. Some sidewalk access on the southwest corner of the intersection may also be affected by the work in the parkette. The work will take place weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Curb bump outs, which will involve widening the sidewalks and resurfacing, are also planned for the intersections of Woodfield, Hiawatha and Craven roads, and at Ashdale and Rhodes avenues as well as sidewalk reconstruction work for properties on both sides of Fairford Avenue between Coxwell and Rhodes avenues and at the intersections of Woodfield, Hiawatha and Craven roads and at Ashdale Avenue.

The project was further delayed as the city had to send the job back out for tendering.

The long-awaited unveiling of the redesigned CoxwellFairford intersection could finally be happening in July.

The complex project, which aims to improve traffic operations and pedestrian safety, was supposed to wrap up last September, but the contractor hired by the city to do the job was recently dismissed due to “performance issues”, Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher wrote in a memo to her constituents.

Domti Engineering and Construction Limited, the contractor in question, has also been placed on the city’s “no-hire” list for a year. This is only the second time the City of Toronto has resorted to this type of action with a contractor, Fletcher said.

The Mirror attempted to contact Domti Engineering and Construction Limited for comment on numerous occasions, but the voicemail was full.

Peggy Baker receives prestigious award JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Eight-year Leslieville resident Peggy Baker has received the prestigious George Luscombe Mentorship Award.

The award was created in honour of Luscombe, who founded Toronto Workshop Productions in 1959 and served as its artistic director for 27 years. He is known as the pioneer of Toronto’s alternative theatre movement.

“I am deeply moved by the courage of each artist who has entrusted me with entry into the highly personal sphere of their creative life. I thank each of them for the significance of

our exchange,” Baker said in her acceptance speech.

Baker, the artistic director of Peggy Baker Dance Projects as well as the artist-in-residence at Canada’s National Ballet School for 25 years, is an innovator in her own right.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, the iconic, awardwinning Canadian dance artist moved to Toronto back in 1971 to study contemporary dance at the Toronto Dance Theatre.

In 1974 she co-founded Toronto’s Dancemakers, a contemporary dance performance company, which has since evolved into a centre of

creation. Baker then moved to New York touring internationally throughout the 1980s with Lar Lobovitch’s dance company before joining Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990.

She founded her Peggy Baker Dance Works that same year focusing on solo performance until 2010 when she started developing choreographies for small ensembles.

Baker’s latest project, locus plot, is her first full-evening ensemble work.

Panamania features more than 1,300 artists in 250 performances across Toronto from July 10 to Aug. 15.
