RHODES JAM

Leslie Street sidewalk construction, Vets Charity donation and other news in brief / 5

Toronto-Danforth MP Craig Scott is urging the federal government to issue an official apology for the decades of discriminatory treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) members of the Canadian Forces. With just weeks until Pride Month, Scott has tabled Motion M-517, which is also seeking an investigation into the many decades during which LGBTQ Canadians were dismissed from or forced to leave the Canadian Forces on account of their sexual orientation or gender identity as well as amending records to reflect honourable service.

ticians, funders and supporters gathered recently at the Balmy Beach Club to learn more about the summer festival. “The 27th annual Beaches jazz festival will be the biggest and best ever,” said Beaches jazz founder Lido Chilelli.

Bill King, the award-winning festival’s longtime artistic director, gave a brief rundown of the event’s musical lineup and this year’s new features, including an additional week dedicated to celebrating the >>>THIS, page 6

“I tabled Motion M-517 in the hopes of addressing a historic wrong and airing the discriminatory treatment of Canadians who were deemed by the military not to be good enough to serve and to sacrifice their lives for their country,” Scott said during a June 2 press conference at Parliament Hill. “Since 2009, New Democrats have urged the government to act on this blight on Canada’s military history,” he said. “We’re calling on the Minister of Defense to do the right thing.”
