“Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice and opportunity,” sang the tenants of 1070 Queen St. E. from a musical rendition of Jack Layton’s Letter to Canadians. This past Sunday, WoodGreen Community Services honoured the late NDP leader by renaming the building Jack Layton Seniors Housing. The affordable housing facility opened 20 years ago, but was never named. “I think it’s lovely, I just think my dad would be so touched,” said Sarah Layton, about her dad who died of cancer in August 2011. Also in attendance were Layton’s widow, Trinity-Spadina MP Olivia Chow, councillor Paula Fletcher, as well as MP Craig Scott and MPP Peter Tabuns, who both represent the riding of Toronto-Danforth. Layton’s son, Mike Layton, was unable to make the event due to duties as councillor of Ward 19 (Trinity-Spadina). “He (Jack Layton) cared so much about housing and so much about seniors that it just seemed perfectly appropriate to have something in this realm with his name,” said Sarah who, along with Chow, received a >>>jack, page 12

Patients thriving at Bridgepoint hospital State-of-the-art hospital overlooking the Don Valley Parkway boasts green rooftop terrace Rebecca field rfield@insidetoronto.com

he sun rises over Toronto’s skyline early in the morning, lighting up patient rooms at the newly built Bridgepoint hospital. As more than 430 patients wake with the surrounding community, trees and landscape in full view, they are some of the first to experience the new building after moving in six weeks ago. The $1.2 billion expansion of Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street, has taken more than six years of planning and building so far. The hospital is a centre for longterm inpatient and outpatient care and rehabilitation, as well as a research and education centre in collaboration with the University of Toronto. Health improved It’s a change from the crowded and enclosed four-person rooms in the old building, which is set to be demolished by fall 2014 and turned into a green landscape. Nurse Danielle Lapointe who has been working at Bridgepoint for eight years has noticed a change in the health of her patients from one building to the next. One of her patients didn’t have a window view in the old building. “She would never get out of bed, she would never use the toilet on her own, she was incontinent,” said Lapointe. “She just slept all day – that’s all she wanted to do.” The same patient moved into the palliative unit in the new building where Lapointe now works. “As soon as she sat in that room and saw that view she just sat at the edge of the bed and said ‘Oh this is wonderful’,” said Lapointe. Her patient has a view of Riverdale Park, and instead of sharing a room with three other patients, she has this one to herself. “She gets up every day, goes to the washroom herself, sits there and watches out the window,” Lapointe said. “It’s kind of like a metamorphosis – she went from a really depressed person to kind of like a flower who’s bloomed.” The patient changed from someone who required total care to someone who is almost independent. Part of the independence can be attributed to the major changes in the new building – things like having

one shower and toilet per patient. The old building had one shower for 36 patients, and one toilet for every nine. That means there are 287 more washrooms in the new building. Patients also have access to a therapy gym, lounge and dining room in each unit – all with views of the Toronto skyline and surrounding community. “Instead of just ambulating or walking in the hallways, they’re able to get on actual equipment and feel that they are accomplishing

something,” Lapointe said. “A week before a patient passed away he was up on the bike.” Also included in the hospital are multi-faith rooms, a newly opened Tim Hortons and cafeteria, as well as its own hair salon. The new therapy pool on the ground floor looks out onto Riverdale Park, so patients can connect with the community while going through therapy. The hospital also boasts a new Snoezelen room – designed for sensory simulation in patients to test their ability to focus and move.

“Soon we’ll move to the patio outside,” said Jennifer Ridgeway, a recreational therapist at the hospital who plans to use the rooftop patio with a panoramic view of the city to engage patients in a gardening program. The hospital currently runs more than 30 programs for rehabilitation that range from beading to hymn singing. “When you’re engaged in something that you enjoy like jewelry making for example, the hour goes by really quickly,” said Ridgeway who noted it’s hard for some patients

to stay out of bed for long periods of time. “Sometimes that time goes by really quickly and they’re able to improve their tolerance.” On top of more resources for patients, Bridgepoint offers a free workout room for those working at the hospital, as well as more space for them to work, a quieter atmosphere, and opportunities to further educate themselves in their field. “We have more flexibility and time management when working with our clients,” said Usman Khan, a physiotherapist at the hospital who noted that scheduling time in workout rooms has been vastly improved due to there being one in every unit, instead of on a different floor. “We can focus more on what we love to do, which is treating patients, instead of waiting for elevators.” The 10-storey facility is the first Canadian hospital built to treat, manage and research complex chronic disease.

ransit funding should be more than just buses, subways and GO trains. Transportation is a more accurate way to look at getting around the Greater Toronto Area. The future of the Gardiner Expressway is being debated – again. With the Environmental Assessment (EA) by Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto now back on the table, a public forum is being held today, the day after the two parties held a media briefing to discuss the EA. The future of the Gardiner comes up every few years, but nothing concrete has ever comes of these discussions. The long-term rehabilitation of the Gardiner is not in question – that needs to happen. However, what exactly our view does that mean, and how is a city like Toronto going to Nothing has handle it? The entire length of the come of past decaying expressway will evenGardiner talks tually come up for debate, but today’s forum focuses on the eastern portion from Jarvis Street to the Don Valley Parkway (DVP). We believe front-and-centre at this discussion should be funding. Not just the $505 million approved by council to rehabilitate the Gardiner, but how will we maintain whatever we decide to do with it – keep it standing, bury it under Lake Shore Boulevard or dismantle it all together? Whatever the decision, funding is rarely mentioned – like the public transit discussion, everyone is concerned about today, not the future. Despite the obvious connection between public transit and the highways, expressways and parkways, no one is discussing how they should work together. If there is an effort out there to come up with a cohesive transportation plan, we’re not seeing it. Within the transit funding tools supported by Metrolinx to pay for the province’s Big Move plan, there should also be funding for our roads and highways. A regional sales tax, development charges, parking space levies, and a fuel tax are on the table to fund transit. Yet, something like highway tolls to help maintain the Gardiner is not being discussed. Or, at the end of the day, maybe we should hand over the Gardiner to the province to include in its transportation portfolio together with the 400 series highways. And while we’re at it, toss in the DVP.

Ford dismissal of Councillor Robinson Reader an attempt by mayor to show strength will pay for a better david nickle commute Firing Councillor Jaye Robinson from his executive committee may have been the most comprehensible thing Rob Ford has done in the past few weeks as mayor. That is not to say that firing Robinson was a nice or city-building thing to do. But from the point of view of a mayor trying to hold onto power in an environment where its levers are increasingly eluding him, it makes sense. Punishing the first member of his executive committee to actively criticize his bungled handling of the crack video controversy sends a message. It establishes a certain kind of strength. Robinson was outspoken, as the mayor continued to refuse to answer the questions arising from the video allegedly showing him smoking crack cocaine. She said he needed to answer those questions.

the city

She said he shouldn’t be allowing his brother to speak for him. And she said he needed to take time away from city hall to deal with whatever issues he might have because until he does, his presence is turning the city into a train wreck. Personal

Those are hard things to say. They are not the sorts of things a member of a strong mayor’s team says. Weighing in on that mayor’s leadership is not the same thing as weighing in on the mayor’s decision to support a casino. It’s personal. If it’s going to be “business as usual,” as the mayor continually claims, then the mayor’s got to clean house.

No choice. So yes, Ford’s decision was understandable from the point of view of raw power politics. The funny thing about power politics, though, is that at a point what’s good for the leader is not good for the team. Robinson said hard things. She also said true things. Removing Robinson from the Executive Committee has another impact on governance. For the first time, the most powerful committee at city hall has not a single woman at the table. That is a giant step backwards, whether her removal was an intentionally gendered decision, or the lack of women candidates to replace her is an unavoidably gendered failure. And that is all too comprehensible.

Re: ‘Bit Move...Big Money,’ Special Report, May 30. The projected costs of an integrated regional transit system proposed by Metrolinx is far less than the estimated $1,600 per household cost for the gridlock that has the GTA stuck in traffic. It’s unfair to characterize Metrolinx as squeezing money out of taxpayers as Thursday’s front page and inside political cartoon did. Funding transit contributes to better access, cleaner air and a smoother commute for everyone. I’ll pay for that. Alice Schuda

Beach children’s author gets letter from Dalai Lama REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com It was just another day at work for Penelope Smith when she met the Dalai Lama. Standing at her post on Oct. 13, 1980 in the jewelry repair

section of the now closed two-storey Burkes shop in the Eaton Centre, a group of Tibetan Monks walked into Smith’s section. That’s when she saw him smiling and walking toward her. She recognized him from

an ad in the newspaper about a speech he was making at the University of Toronto. The Dalai Lama put his hands together and bowed to her – a gesture which she returned. He picked up a scarlet coloured watchband and held it up to his scarlet coloured robes to show off how they matched, and his smile grew. “It made me feel happy for years,” said Smith. “The girl in the diamond section thought they were Hare Krishnas and were going to ask her for money so she turned away.” It wasn’t until this year, 33 years later, that Smith would encounter the Dalai Lama again. This time it would involve her self-published children’s book Hugo and Fluffy Tales. “I sent him a couple of chapters of my book a couple of years ago asking if it would be OK if I dedicated it to him,” said Smith who both wrote and illustrated her self-published book.

Make your move.

The book features stories about her two cats and members of the Beach neighbourhood, including a story where Fluffy visits the Beach Arms Retirement Residence and meets two women named Joyce and Margaret. “I thought, why not ask him directly. I was surprised to get more than just some kind of official thing, but I got this really nice friendly

letter.” Smith sent a cover letter with her chapters explaining she had met him those many years ago, and she hoped he remembered her. She ended up gaining a correspondence from one of the Dalai Lama’s personal assistants who told her she could dedicate the book to him. After publishing last year,

she sent him a full copy of her book. “His office presented it. He apparently kept the book and cover letter and put it into his personal library,” said Smith who got the news in another personalized letter last month.

Cats gets all-Canadian revival with help from Beach residents Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com

and on Broadway. Marlene Smith, who produced the original Toronto run, is one of the producers behind the revival, which Campbell noted is exciting for him and his team. This is the fifth time Campbell has directed a production of Cats. He offered some insight into the show’s enduring appeal.

Beach resident Dave Campbell is introducing a new generation of Canadians to Cats, as director of the mega-musical’s all-Canadian revival. The Toronto production features an all-Canadian cast and crew, and some new spins on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic feline fable, including one that lends a local feel to the storyline, care of production designer, and fellow Beach resident, Tim Webb. “Traditionally Cats was done in a junk yard, but Tim has played with the concept of under a bridge, so that it almost has the feeling of under, like, the Bloor viaduct – like what it might be in a big city where people just kind of toss things away as they don’t need them,” Campbell said. “He’s included some large earthmoving equipment. Just different things than the pile of garbage, which was the traditional look.” The revival has some new tricks up its sleeve as well. Toronto-based Rose and Thistle created holograms for the show that add massive visual impact, especially when an

Dave Campbell takes a break to strike a pose on the set of Cats. The Beach resident is directing the all-Canadian revival of the blockbuster musical, which opened Tuesday at the Panasonic Theatre.

evil character causes an explosion, which Campbell likens to watching a “neutron crash.” The make-up was also revamped, incorporating designs from the show’s original 1981 debut in London, England, harkening back to a more angular, Gothic look, as opposed to the Disney-fied felines featured in recent American productions. “It’s very cutting edge and interesting,” Campbell said of the Toronto

production, noting it was important to everyone involved to update, and not just rehash, the musical. Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Cats is the second-longest running show in Broadway history. This is Toronto’s first all-Canadian production of the musical since its original 1985 debut in the city ushered Torontonians into the mega-musical era. Cats was the first musical to appear simultaneously in Toronto

“Each one of the cats has a small life lesson,” he mused. “Either they’re somebody we know, or we see parts of ourself in them. It’s interesting, people relate to and identify with different characters for different reasons... Also, it really makes you confront how we can become very prejudiced to things that we don’t understand, or get a fear for things we don’t understand.” A graduate of Ryerson University’s theatre program, Campbell has spent more than 25 years in theatre and television as a performer, choreographer and director, almost accidentally. “I actually thought at the time that I went into dancing that that would be just fine, but after I did a lot of musical theatre I realized that

if you don’t sing, your career is very short,” said Campbell, adding that led him to start singing, which in turn led him to acting. He began choreographing during his spare time, and the next thing he knew, he was directing. “Bit by bit I became more of a choreographer and a director, and suddenly one day I realized, ‘It’s been years since you’ve performed.’ I never planned on retiring, there just really wasn’t any time,” he said. He noted the revival is important. “I’m just so proud that a Canadian producer has decided to take this step and tried to produce efficient, slightly smaller big musicals in town, so that we can start having pride in our own Canadian performers again. As opposed to waiting for the Americans to come in with a show, and then we all fall all over each other to get a part in it,” he said. “It feels like, in some sense, of taking it back. Taking back control of our industry, and I just find that’s super exciting.” For Cats show times and ticket information, visit www.catsto.com or call 416-872-1212. The Panasonic Theatre is at 651 Yonge St.

community Public meeting on wResidents Gardiner Thursday will get a chance to sound off on the future of the Gardiner Expressway during a public meeting this week. Organized by the city and Waterfront Toronto, the event will mark the first opportunity for public feedback since the resumption of an environmental assessment (EA) examining potential long term options for the eastern portion of the Gardiner and Lake Shore Boulevard. Cancelled shortly after Rob Ford’s mayoral victory, the EA was resurrected earlier this year following a majority vote by city council. City engineers warn the Gardiner will become unusable in less than a decade if no action is taken. Pape station closure on hold RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A plan to close Pape station for 12 straight days this month to speed up renovation work is now on hold because of a province-wide labour dispute. Trade workers from the Brick and Allied Craft Union of Canada (BACU) were supposed to have taken part in station fixture work during the June 15 to 26 closure, which was intended to fast track ongoing renovations to Pape in time for a September completion date. The union, however, went on strike May 31 because of a wage dispute with contractors belonging to Terrazzo, Tile and Marble Guild of Ontario Inc. (TTMGO), and the timeline for Pape is now in jeopardy, said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross. “It’s out of our control, but without that trade to do the work it doesn’t make any sense to close the station,” said Ross, the TTC’s head of

communications. “If it’s sooner rather than later, we can go back to the schedule to see how we can work in a new date.” Despite being aware of the possibility of a job action, the TTC did not include any information about it in a recent online poll gauging public support for an extended closure. “It’s not our place to advise people of a potential labour dispute, we don’t want to be seen as interfering or anything like that,” Ross said. He said a main reason for the closure was rebuilding the station’s stairs, which are currently little more than wooden frames over concrete. “Those stairs to and from the platform are what pri-

marily caused us to want to close the station, otherwise we would have had to wait for the second exits to be done and use them as the primary egress,” Ross said. Construction of an additional subway platform exit is scheduled for completion in December and unaffected by the labour dispute. Ross said it was too soon to determine a “drop-dead date” for completing the renovations by September. “It’s a disappointment to us and our customers we can’t accelerate the work, but the station will remain open and business will continue to flow through Pape station,” he said. TTMGO Executive Director David St. Louis said guild contractors wanted to work on the station renovations but were “hamstrung” as long as the labour dispute continues. Officials from BACU were not available for comment. More info at www.ttc.ca/ About_the_TTC/Projects/ Station_Improvements/ Pape_Station/index.jsp

MP touring Canada to learn what urbanites need from government

Readers’ Choice Contest

>>>from page 1 live in urban environments today. Kellway noted the key to remaining competitive globally is to concentrate on improving these urban centres. He plans to meet with community members, councillors and members of parliament during his consultations. “ We can’t talk about having a healthy prosperous national economy without talking about having urban economies function well,” said Kellway, who said all levels of government should work closer together instead of considering each other in the traditional hierarchy of federal, provincial and finally municipal. Kellway, who was elected as MP for Beaches-East York in 2011, had urban issues at the centre of his campaign. “I’ve kind of been pounding on that ever since, and I’ve been heard,” Kellway said. “So many of my colleagues have come out of municipal politics and know a thing about the struggles of their own municipalities and the need at a federal level to recognize the role of cities.” Kellway said his own riding ranges in income levels from street to street. Some of the solutions Kellway said he is hoping to gauge through these consulta-

tions will deal with economic, social and environmental issues all at once. He cited the example of certain buildings in his own riding that need to be updated and retrofitted due to things like constantly breaking elevators or leaks from an eco-energy perspective, including older air conditioning units using more energy than newer models. “There are opportunities such as (former mayor) David Miller’s old Tower Renewal Program (which set out to improve Toronto’s concrete apartment towers) to create green jobs, improve the housing stock for people who live in those buildings, improve communities around them with the regeneration of the neighbourhood,” Kellway said. The planning for consultations should be completed by the end of the month, when Kellway can begin touring the country. “I’m looking forward to getting out a bit and seeing different parts of our country and engaging people from different parts of our country in these conversations,” Kellway said.
