Woodbine Bathing Station receives upgrade The Woodbine Bathing Station, the busiest beach washroom in Toronto, has undergone a $1.3 million upgrade. ”It needed a substantial refurbishment on a number of levels,” said James Dann, the city’s manager of waterfront parks, during a recent interview.

“The Woodbine Bathing Station is the hub of the eastern beaches and it’s the main washroom people use.”

In the last five years, the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division replaced the building’s roof, but further work was needed, Dann explained.

As a result, a renovation project planned for 2012 was pushed back until the fall of 2014 to combine both the physical upgrade of the building, as well as landscaping work that now surrounds it.

“Because it’s such a hub we needed more amenities,” he said, adding the newly reopened building is a real addition to the Beach.

The more Toronto staff look at them, the more problems seem to arise from community mailboxes.

Canada Post will be installing the mailboxes everywhere, but the downtown core.

On Monday, the Toronto and East York Community Council heard from staff, community groups and homeowners about the prospect of the mailboxes that will facilitate the end of door-to-door mail delivery.

The community mailboxes are big, and while staff confirmed Canada Post won’t be locating them in the downtown core, East York, Riverdale and the Beach will likely have to accommodate them starting in 2018.

UN appointment for Beach resident JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com After only two years of calling the Beach home, award-winning humanitarian and business leader, Rosemary McCarney, will be putting her Hammersmith Avenue home up for sale this weekend and heading to Geneva, Switzerland, to serve as the ambassador and permanent representative of Canada to the Office of the United Nations and the United Nations Conference in Disarmament.

McCarney, who for nearly 10 years has worked as the president and CEO of Plan Canada – one of Canada’s largest and oldest international development agencies – was offered the role earlier this year.

After much consideration, she decided to pursue the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

McCarney, who holds a law degree from the University of Western Ontario and a masters of business admin-

“This is an opportunity to work with other like-minded nation states on the biggest issues of our day,” said McCarney, adding she feels she’ll be able to effect even more change as most major unilateral organizations are headquartered in Geneva.

Karen Jackson, chair of Plan Canada’s board of directors, wished McCarney well in a June 8 release.

“Plan Canada has seen tremendous growth and diversification under Rosemary’s leadership as we work to improve the lives of children around the world.”

McCarney, who penned her third children’s book, Tilt Your Head, Rosie the Red from the front porch of her Beach home, said she won’t be gone from the neighbourhood for too long as she plans to return to the Beach when her four-year appointment concludes.

“In the meantime, I’m honoured to represent Canadians at the UN and to be the voice for them,” said the married mother of three adult children, who has served on a number of boards and has worked with the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, USAID and CIDA as well as other government and UN bodies.

McCarney starts her new role in September.

Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Athletes’ Village tour JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com More than 10,000 athletes and officials from 41 countries will soon be calling a 35-acre site in the West Don Lands near Eastern Avenue and Cherry Street home during the upcoming Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

Earlier this week, members of the media were given the opportunity to get a first-hand look at the features and amenities of the $709-million project.

“The village is designed to be convenient, comfortable, secure, vibrant and welcoming and we feel confident, with the help of our partners and numerous sponsors, that these athletes will be at home this summer,” said Allen Vansen, executive vice president of the TO2015 Organizing Committee, who led the tour along with two-time Olympic swimmer Julia Wilkinson and track and field athlete/ Pan Am hopeful Kimberly Hyacinthe.

Only a few athletes ever get the chance to live in an Athletes’ Village, Vansen said, adding organizers have “worked hard to design (one) that speaks to the value athletes bring to our Games and, of course, it is a Village that

will leave a lasting legacy in a new waterfront neighbourhood.”

The tour kicked off at the new Cooper Koo Family YMCA, which will serve as a state-ofthe-art gym. Journalists were then directed to a café in an area known as the Welcoming Centre, which will have live nightly entertainment, as well as welcoming ceremonies for each country’s team.

“It gives you a feel of what the Village is going to be like,” Hyacinthe said.

The next stop was the 65,000-square-feet, 2,500seat dining hall, which is still under construction.

“This is a massive, massive building,” Wilkinson said of the space, which she said offers many food choices for athletes and officials.

“It’s also a great opportunity to meet some top athletes from around the world.”

Vansen noted the dining hall is just a few steps away from the “transportation mall” where athletes and officials will be picked up and dropped off for their sporting events.

Next was a stop at the 20,000-square-foot temporary polyclinic.

urgent and emergency care, dental services, a pharmacy, rehabilitation and an antidoping clinic among other things. There’s also a fully accredited laboratory and an MRI machine on site.

“This is the heart of our health care,” she said, pointing to another 120 medical facilities the Games will be working with to ensure athletes and officials enjoy topnotch health care.

“This is really a pre-glimpse of what the polyclinic will look like.”

Dozens of volunteers are currently in the midst of setting up the medical facility, as well as packing hundreds of care kits for athletes and officials at the Games’ 30 venues located in 16 municipalities across southern Ontario.

Corktown Common, a new 18-acre green space within the newly constructed Athletes’

Village that has been made available for the exclusive use of Pan Am/Parapan Am athletes and officials during the Games, is just across the street.

As a result of the construction of the Village, the development of the 80-acre West Don Lands community has been accelerated by an estimated five to 10 years.

This was made possible due, in part, to a partner-

ship between Infrastructure Ontario and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, which expedited the at-times lengthy approvals process for the site.

Infrastructure Ontario also reduced the length of its procurement process for the Village’s developer from a year and a half to six months so as much time as possible could be allocated to building.

Ground broke on the Athletes’ Village in early 2012.

Construction wrapped up on Feb. 20, 2015.

Prior to Toronto being awarded the 25-day, multisport event in 2009, a master plan was in place for a sustainable, mixed-use community for the disused and derelict former industrial site, just west on the lower Don River.

Extensive remediation and flood proofing were required to make the West Don Lands usable for development as the brownfield site is so close to the lower Don River.

After the Games, the Athletes’ Village will become a new sustainable, mixeduse community with 6,000 market-rate and affordable housing units, as well as employment, commercial, institutional and educations areas along with parkland.

Shawn William Clarke, Beams and The Noisy Locomotive on Friday, June 19 starting at 7 p.m. at the Cameron House, 408 Queen St. W., just west of Spadina Avenue.

Akiyama, who lives near Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue, grew up in an artistic family that appreciates music.

His father, Denis, was a pro-

fessional multi-instrumentalist who is now trying his hand at acting, while his mother, Danielle, is a painter.

“My whole life, I’ve grown up around music,” said Akiyama, who starting taking piano lessons when he was seven years old.

As a teen, he attended Claude Watson School for the Arts in North York for music

before moving to Montreal to study jazz/bass performance.

Akiyama completed his studies in the spring of 2013 and moved back to Toronto that summer.

Birds of Bellwoods was formed shortly after his return.

Akiyama, who has also played in a number of other bands in both Toronto and Montreal, is

We’re shining the spotlight on good, quality journalism Information overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes distinguishing the truth from the fiction a difficult task.

When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray?

There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned.

Dubbed ‘JournalismIS’, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability.

Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in The Beach Mirror and other newspapers, on television and online touting the benefits of good journalism.

We’re great at telling other people’s stories – we’re trained to do so and committed to that objective – but as journalists we’re not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do.

That’s why the team at The Mirror and all Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with other major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign.

The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do.

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Mayor John Tory did?

Maybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practise of carding by police and maybe they don’t.

But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe.

That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime.

The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday.

The regulations, yet

david nickle the city unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary.

It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier this year at the Toronto Police Services Board, a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines.

Today Mayor John Tory will make a forthright attempt to stop carding once and for all, bringing a motion to the Toronto Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring.

It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto

journalist Desmond Cole describing in detail the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice.

Learning a lesson It’s a wonder the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain.

It’s true police value carding as an intelligencegathering strategy.

The information gleaned may well contribute to ongoing investigations or simply give police a better map of the communities they’re assigned to protect.

But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor Bill Blair.

Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto and it is unlikely

that police enforcement, or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts.

At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour.

Holding all that in balance, it is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks.

Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught.

The provincial Liberals, having seen that example play out at their doorstep, seem bound to learn that lesson themselves.

Media groups join forces to promote professional journalism GRACE PEACOCK gpeacock@insidetoronto.com A coalition of media outlets, associations, unions and journalism schools are banding together in a marketing campaign to spread the message that professional journalism just can’t be beat.

Pegged ‘JournalismIS,’ the campaign is backed by Metroland Media Group, the publisher of this paper, and will feature newspaper, television and online advocacy ads touting the value of professional journalism.

“Our starting point for this was a general worry that journalists weren’t doing enough to tell their own stories,” said campaign spokesperson Mary Anges Welch at the launch last Friday at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto.

The former president of the Canadian Association of Journalists and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press said: “We’re not talking enough

about the contribution we make nationally, but also on the local level to Canadian public life. We’re not talking about the value of an independent, reliable, ethical, impartial journalistic culture in Canada.”

The advertisements, which began to appear across news outlets Saturday, June 13, for the next four months, aim to rally the journalism community to increase awareness, recognition and support for professional journalism.

Ian Oliver, president of Metroland Media Group, agreed the media does a great job telling other people’s stories, but not so much their own. And having professional journalists at the grassroots level is just important as covering stories on a national level, he said.

“Many people overlook the importance of community journalism. I think we’re the fabric of the community,” Oliver said in an interview.

“Metroland employs about 500 professional journalists – we’re a significant part of the journalism world. And if Metroland isn’t providing a forum for the community, investigating stories and providing information, nobody else is doing it.”

Toronto Star reporter Chantal Hébert said she hopes the campaign sparks a conversation among the public about the role journalists play in shedding light on important issues, but also in driving public engagement.

“I believe a better informed public will come to better informed decisions, but more importantly, a well informed public is one that will be more engaged – which is even more important than whether you think a decision is well informed or not.”
