HELP for east-end residents Homeowners from the city’s east end are among the first in Toronto to be offered a chance to benefit from the city’s Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), a new municipal home efficiency program.

This new initiative, which offers low-interest loans (2.5 per cent) to qualifying homeowners interested in improving the energy and water efficiency of their home, like upgrading insulation or replacing an old furnace, air conditioner, water heater, windows, doors, and even toilets, is currently being offered as a pilot program to single-family residences in selected areas of the city, including the east end and parts of East York and Scarborough.

Through the HELP program, the City provides the funding needed to complete improvements, while the homeowner is responsible for repaying the city in a period up to 15 years through installments on their property tax bill.

Homeowners can pay off their loan at any time without penalty.

The unique part of the program is that the loan isn’t attached to the individual, but the property, meaning it transfers to the new owner(s) when/ if a property changes hands.

Musical finds ‘common ground’ for teens with queer parents JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Riverside resident Ken McNeilly was so inspired by the powerful voices, unique perspectives and beautiful stories he heard from teens with queer parents while writing his 400-page thesis two years ago that he decided to turn them into a musical called The Common Ground: A Musical Dissertation.

“These are really interesting stories I’d really like people to hear,” said McNeilly, who has since obtained his PhD in developmental psychology from the University of Toronto.

Inspired to share the teens’ inspiring stories with a wider audience, McNeilly decided to submit a proposal to the Toronto Fringe Festival last November. The following month, he found out he’d been randomly chosen to take part in the prestigious 12-day theatre festival.

“It’s been pretty crazy. This whole thing has snowballed into something amazing. ... I think we’re really going to turn some heads with the quality of this production.”

An elementary school teacher by day who has enjoyed acting and playing music since he was a child, McNeilly also plays the role of one of the so-called queerspawn teen’s fathers as well as a nun in The

Common Ground, the inaugural production of his theatre company, Phenomenon Theatrix.

McNeilly, who is openly gay, also plays the keyboard and sings in the musical comedy as well as serves as the show’s director.

He said the topic of his thesis and recent musical comes from his own dreams of one day becoming a father.

“The research was definitely inspired by my personal experiences,” McNeilly said.

“It was a really beautiful experience for me to interview these kids.”

He said one of the most interesting things he got out of his research was the many advantages the teens see about having lesbian or gay parents including how authentic their

parents are and how brave they were to come out of the closet.

Those he interviewed also told him about the challenges they face being caught between the gay world and the straight world, especially in school, which is a very heterosexual environment.

As a result, McNeilly said many of the teens he interviewed are straight but feel like “ambassadors” of the queer community.

“Every single interview I did I came away thinking, ‘Are you kidding me? These kids are so wise and so awesome’,” he said.

“Writing a doctoral dissertation can be the absolute worst type of torture, but with such inspirational interview material, I actually loved it.”

Ten-year Beach Triangle resident Suzanne McKenney stars in the musical as the mother of Owen, the only male teenager in the 60-minute musical comedy.

She also portrays a preschool teacher as well as plays guitar and electric bass and sings.

McKenney has worked as an actor/singer/songwriter for about 25 years, but only recently made a return to her acting roots.

“I’m starting to get back into theatre, which is where I started out,” said McKenney, who has played in

several bands as well as done solo musical performances, television, commercial and voice-over gigs over the years.

She auditioned for The Common Ground after seeing a call for auditions on a theatre blog in midMarch.

“I fit the bill. They were looking for a 40-something woman who could play guitar, sing and act. I thought; ‘that’s me’,” McKenney laughed.

A day later, she learned she’d been chosen for the role.

“It was fast and wonderful,” McKenney said, praising McNeilly for the wonderful music he also wrote for The Common Ground.

“It’s a really nice ensemble piece.”

West Toronto resident Sadie Epstein-Fine, one of the teens McNeilly interviewed for his thesis, is the show’s production manager, dramaturge, choreographer and assistant director.

The Common Ground: A Musical Dissertation will be staged July 2 at 10:30 p.m., July 5 at 11 p.m., July 7 at 4:45 p.m., July 9 at 8:45 p.m., July 10 at 1:45 p.m., July 11 at 7:30 p.m., and July 13 at 3:30 p.m. at the Randolph Theatre, 736 Bathurst St.

Much to celebrate this Canada Day

orontonians have much to celebrate on Canada Day. We have a front row seat when it comes to witnessing the amazing cultural diversity on display in our communities.

For example, there’s the ongoing World Cup of Soccer, where teams from 32 countries (each with an identifiable fan base in the city), are competing for the privilege of being crowned world champion. You can see the flags flying from homes, businesses and vehicles. You can see people gathered around televisions to watch the games. And you can definitely see and hear the jubilant celebrations when a team secures victory.

Canada is a nation of immigrants. And nowhere else is this country’s diversity as visible as it is in Toronto, where nearly half of the population first learned a language other than English at home.

We went to a citizenship cerour view emony and got the perspective of a number of new Canadians, North York’s Clive New citizens including Townsend, who spoke of the “privilege” citizenship granted strengthen him.

Toronto In this country, we have much to be thankful for. Rights that we normally take for granted can be harder to secure elsewhere.

So in honour of Canada Day, we’d like to throw out a couple of challenges.

To the new Canadian: in the coming months, make an effort to find out more about your new community and city and all it has to offer. The summer season is a wonderful time to do this. There are plenty of places, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Centre, the CN Tower or Fort York, to visit and get a sense of the community’s history and characteristics.

To the more deeply rooted Torontonian: use your time this summer to attend a couple of cultural events with a goal of finding out more about that particular culture and what it brings to our city.

Again, there are plenty of options to choose from, including such festivals as Salsa on St. Clair, Taste of the Danforth, and Scotiabank Caribana.

What better way to evolve as a community? As newer immigrants become more comfortable in their new home, and the more deeply-rooted citizens gain a greater understanding of the diverse cultures that make up this city, one of Toronto’s strengths – its multiculturalism – will get even stronger.

Ideas can lose steam in long mayoral races

R

eally, it is a good thing for a city, every three to four years to have a good long mayoral race. And not just because it’s healthy to change things at the top every once in awhile.

Particularly in Toronto’s 10-month marathons, it lets us air out some novel and occasionally useful and far-fetched ideas on how the city ought to be shaped.

Often these ideas come from the darnedest places, and that is where they stay.

In 2010, for instance, Rocco Rossi suggested Toronto should have a mechanism for recalling a bad mayor. That was an idea before its time – Rossi didn’t even make it to voting day, his support was so low – but there are probably a bindingpetitions-worth of people in Toronto right now who wish they had something like that over the past year.

This year, mayoral

david nickle the city candidate David Soknacki is on his way to fulfilling that role. Consistently low in public opinion polls, the former city councillor from Scarborough has been leading when it comes to ideas.

His first big idea, to scrap the Scarborough subway and build an LRT in its place, was soon picked up by Olivia Chow.

His latest, to ban onstreet parking on arterial roads in the downtown core, hasn’t yet been picked up by anyone.

It’s too bad, because the ban would probably do more to make on-road transportation faster and safer than any number of relief subway lines – or at least the decade of debates and environmental assessments preceding their construction.

Bike lanes wouldn’t be the impediment to car traffic that they are now, because they wouldn’t have to deke around onstreet parking spaces and into car lanes. Where bike lanes weren’t appropriate, cars would have at least two lanes in a direction to move, and that would go the same for buses, which might be increased.

And pedestrians, not well known for adhering to crosswalks and traffic lights, would have a safer time crossing mid-block than they do lurching out into traffic from between parked cars.

It would also tick off numerous small busi-

nesses, and a certain number of motorists who’ve gotten used to parking on the streets and don’t like the multilevel parking garages that Soknacki envisions to replace street parking.

And those, at least in a mayoral race, are two sleeping bears that no candidate wants to poke.

That is why it takes a candidate like Soknacki – who at this point, has no car-commuter, small-business support to lose – to bring the notion forward.

It’s a good gamble on his part. If the idea catches on with enough other factions in our balkanized electorate, Soknacki could gain enough support to give him a shot at the prize.

And if not, it is a good, radical idea, of the sort that the more established candidates don’t go near.

Read and then listen to concert Area residents are invited to get reading this summer – specifically international bestselling Vikram Seth’s An Equal Music, a powerful, romantic tale of two gifted musicians Presented by the organizers of the Kingston Road Village Concert Series, the new Beaches Reads will culminate with a special concert Sunday, Nov. 1.

The concert will feature radio host Tom Allen illuminating certain passages from Seth’s book as a Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) string quartet performs classical selections integral to the book.

This event will be held at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Rd., just west of Victoria Park Avenue.

In the weeks leading up the big concert, local TSO musician Tim Dawson and friends will host discussions about An Equal Music at four, perhaps five, local libraries. The dates, times and locations have yet to be determined.

The Kingston Road Village Concert Series is an ongoing series of concerts held at Kingston Road United Church to help raise funds for critical building repairs at the church.

A lot of positives for Oleksiak For Jamie Oleksiak, who grew up in the Beach, the American Hockey League (AHL) post season brought with it a lot of positives – literally.

The 21-year-old, 6’7” Texas Stars defender led the plusminus category – which measures the differential between goals for and against that a player is on the ice for – for the AHL post season with a plus-13 in 21 playoff games.

He added five assists.

In the regular season, in 69 games, he was a plus-eight and contributed 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists).

Of course, it goes without saying the top positive for him was the AHL Calder Cup playoff hockey championship, which the Stars won in five games over the St. John’s IceCaps.

The series was a lot closer than the 4-1 series differential would indicate with the final four games decided by one goal (and the final three going into overtime).

Despite his hockey success, Oleksiak definitely has to share the accolades around the family dinner table in the Beach.

Little sister Peggy Oleksiak is a top nationally ranked youth swimmer. In fact,

Swimming Canada’s website has her down as top ranked this season in the country in more than a dozen categories at the 13-year-old age level.

Mayor Ford running second in latest Forum Research poll Mayor Rob Ford has pulled ahead of John Tory but still lags behind Olivia Chow, in a new public opinion poll

by Forum Research, taken a week before Ford is scheduled to return from rehab for problems with alcohol.

But if Ford were out of the mayoral race entirely, the poll indicates that Chow and Tory would be statistically tied for

voter support.

Forum Research President Lorne Bozinoff said for all that, it is too soon to tell whether Ford’s surge has more to do with his imminent return than a permanent shift in voter intentions.

The telephone poll contacted 890 Toronto residents Monday, June 23. It found in the current race, Olivia

Chow led the race with 34 per cent, Rob Ford had 27 per cent, John Tory had 24 per cent support, David Soknacki had six per cent and Karen Stintz trailed with three per cent. Six per cent described themselves as undecided.

The poll marks a slight rebound for Mayor Rob Ford, who two weeks ago faced his lowest polling numbers since

he was elected mayor, trailing both Chow and Tory.

The poll also measured personal approval rating among the candidates. By that measure, John Tory led the pack, with 61 per cent among those voters who were aware of him. Chow followed close behind him, with 57 per cent with those who knew of her.

Staying cool when it’s hot outside It’s been a long, cold winter and we’ve waited months for the warm weather to arrive. Finally, summer’s here.

And just as winter’s extreme cold affects those who are vulnerable, so does summer’s extreme heat.

The warmer weather affects vulnerable populations more quickly than others and for these reasons, it’s important to make sure that your loved ones are safe. Younger children, babies and seniors are at particular risk when the temperatures rise.

When summer temperatures soar beyond safe levels, the City of Toronto will issue a “Heat Alert.” These advisories are reminders for people – particularly those who are especially vulnerable, to take special care when the mercury soars. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre monitors these alerts and are always available to answer questions and provide support wherever needed.

Those who may have an increased risk during the hot weather include: • Older adults, infants and young children • People with chronic illnesses, such as heart or respiratory conditions • People who work or exercise outside • People who live alone • Even folks without air conditioning or adequate air circulation Seniors have particular risks in the summer. These include the following, including descriptions of each: • Sun Burn: Marked by pink or red skin that feels warm or hot to the touch • Heat Exhaustion: Signs include sweating, cool moist skin, high body temperature, weak pulse, possibly fainting and vomiting

• Heat Stroke: Symptoms include a high body temperature and any of the following: weakness, confusion, hot, dry, flushed skin, fast pulse, headache and dizziness If there are people in your life, such as grandparents, friends, or neighbours who may be at risk for heat-related health issues, make sure to check on them regularly during the summer months. Where appropriate, support them or help them make provisions for managing in the heat. A friendly phone call, an email or visit to see how they’re doing will allow you the peace of mind that your loved one is okay. You can also create a hot weather protection plan for them to assure that they’re prepared for the heat. As part of the plan, make sure to address the following: • The location of the closest airconditioned place (shopping centre, library, community centre, etc.) or cooling centre • Knowing the signs and the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke • Having a backup support system, friend or caregiver who can help in case of an emergency.

We’re always being remind-

ed not to leave our pets and children in the car when it’s hot. The same rule applies to anyone, especially seniors.

NEVER leave a person or pet in an unattended car.

WHEN AN ALERT IS DECLARED, TAKE ACTION: Encourage those at risk to visit the cool room in their building, or cool public places such as malls, community centres, and libraries, and regularly check on them to make sure they’re managing.

Here are some simple tips for seniors to help them cope with the heat: • Encourage them to drink plenty of fluids especially water • Limit activities so that they don’t over-exert themselves • Visit air conditioned spaces, such as malls, shopping centres and the city operated cooling centres • Call for help if they don’t feel well, i.e., if they become ill, faint, have trouble breathing or feel confused or disoriented.

Devitt received the Mentorship Award from the Canadian College of Health at the organization’s national awards gala in Banff, Alberta, earlier this month.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award,” he said in an email

El-Farouk Khaki, a Toronto lawyer and downtown resident, said his family fled Tanzania in the 1970s among thousands of East Indians who claimed asylum in Canada and the U.K. after being forced out of their homeland.

The UN estimates there were about 10.4 million refugees of concern last year. Another 4.8 million are looked after in some 60 camps in the Middle East.

Canada accepts about 15,000 refugees yearly.

More than half are selected abroad for resettlement here. The others are privately sponsored or arrive in Canada seeking protection.

ormer Jamaican soldier Clive Townsend proudly saluted Citizenship Judge Karen McMillan as he was sworn in as a new Canadian with 103 others just days before our country’s 147th birthday on Tuesday, July 1.

“It is a privilege to become a Canadian,” said the North York resident after the ceremony. “I have been waiting a long time for this dream to come true.”

An ecstatic Townsend, 50, said his first task is to register to vote.

“I went to vote in the provincial election (June 12) and I could not because I am not Canadian,” he said. “I will be first in line to vote in the mayoral election in October.”

Townsend moved to Toronto from Jamaica in 1995 and plans to sponsor to Canada members of his family.

“This document gives me privilege,” Townsend said of his Certificate of Citizenship. “I have been waiting for a long time to become a citizen of this great country.”

He said this Canada Day will be “even more special” as he is a citizen.

Kulwant Kaur, and her son, Sukhjinder, 20, also of North York, were all smiles as they recited their Oaths of Citizenship.

“My son will have a great future here with more opportunities than I had,” Kaur beamed. “We are very excited about our lives in Canada.”

She moved here with her family from India about 20-years ago and never took out citizenship.

“I am so very proud,” she said. “Now we can vote and have better job opportunities.”

Many of the new citizens fled violent or war-torn countries and were granted asylum in Canada.

She plans on applying for a passport and public service job, for both of which she has to be a citizen.

Marcia Collins, who recently moved from

Etobicoke to Mississauga, praised Canada as a great place to raise a family.

“This is a wonderful country to be a citizen of,” said Collins, who came here from Jamaica. “Being a citizen means that I now have a voice and can vote.”

Judge McMillan urged the new Canadians to vote and exercise their responsibilities. “Take pride in the

Oath and always defend the Canadian way of life,” she said.

Ceremony guest Rana Khan, of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), reminded the new Canadians that June 20 was declared World Refugee Day, to commemorate the plight of refugees. “You have picked a great country

to call home,” Khan said.

“Toronto and Canada have always been generous hosts for refugees fleeing from conflicts around the world.”

She said events were planned throughout Canada to mark the special day.

robbery wArmed suspect wanted Police are searching for a male suspect wanted in connection with an armed robbery at the Royal Bank on Broadview Ave., just south of Danforth Avenue.

The incident happened on Friday, June 20 at about 5:45 p.m.

Investigators report the suspect entered the premises and approached the counter before producing a gun and a box cutter style knife and demanding an employee hand over cash.

The victim complied and handed over a quantity of money before the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim was not injured.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 5’8”, 161 pounds, approximately 25 years old with a thin build and short black hair. He was last seen wearing a white and black baseball cap with a ‘brass knuckles’ logo, and had earrings in both ears.

Police are looking for a man wanted in connection with multiple east end residential break-and-enter incidents.

Using forensic evidence from a June 22 break-in at a home near Kingston Road and Waverly Avenue, investigators were able to identify Dustin Knapp-Legault, 22, as the suspect.

9TH ANNUAL JOINT CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES MONEY FOR SENIORS On June 17, five long term care homes: Nisbet Lodge,The Wexford Residence, Chester Village, Valleyview Residence and The Mariann Home came hosted the 9th annual joint charity golf tournament to raise money for seniors’ care.
