REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com Tuesday was the official launch of East End Arts at East York Civic Centre – the sixth official Local Arts Service Organization (LASO) in Toronto.

LASOs receive municipal funding and “provide services aligned with those of cultural services at both the policy and operational levels,” according to the website.

East End Arts will try to bring community and arts together, said Cindy Rozeboom, the managing director.

“There’s a lot of artists in eastern Toronto, but we don’t have a structure,” Rozeboom said. “A lot of people go out to the west end to do stuff, so we’re trying to change that a little bit.”

Rozeboom plans to spend her first four months networking with artists and assessing how programs already in place can be represented better. New programming will likely come in a year or two.

Rozeboom, said she would like to see an online depository where people can submit photos, paintings, poetry or other forms of art inspired by areas in their neighbourhood.

Learn to profit from your own death at Fringe Festival REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com A lesson in the lucrative business of feigning one’s own death is on the schedule for this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival.

In three separate tales, audience members will learn about a man who quits university to save his family farm and instead learns about making a profit off his own death in The Adventures of a Professional Corpse.

“A man discovers a secret formula that allows him to die and come back to life,” said Beach resident Catherine Shelton, who co-wrote the play with Alexandra Rambusch.

“There are interesting ways that this can be used.”

The play, presented by production company Bent Spoons, runs at the Tarragon Theatre from July 5 to 14 at various times during the festival.

“It’s sort of that film noir qual-

ity of interesting subject matter,” said Shelton, who noted the Fringe Festival has no permanent sets on stage, so they are using three ladders and four curtains as a set.

UNIQUE SHOWS “The Fringe is exactly what it says it is. It’s not overly produced, it’s really basic theatre. Anything you want to do you have to do imaginatively,” Shelton said. “It’s like a snail, you gotta take your house on your back when you leave.”

Rambusch, a resident of Bloor West said, “People see multiple shows in a day so you want to grab their attention and go. You’ve got stuff you can’t do elsewhere.”

The play is based off a serial written by Napanee’s Henry Bedford Jones.

It was originally published in a pulp magazine from 1940 called Weird Tales, and was found by Rambusch who has an interest in film noir-style theatre.

“It’s been really interesting for a lot of the younger actors, some aren’t familiar with these movies I was inspired by,” said Rambusch, who had the actors read from classic movie scripts during auditions.

Beach resident Lavetta Griffin plays three separate roles in the play: a mother, another mother and an aunt.

“It’s very quirky, really fun engaging theatre – in the right way,” said Griffin, a stay-at-home mom who decided to take up acting last year, making it into the New Ideas Festival.

“I started this nonsense just over a year ago. Because of this opportunity I’ll get to go and be in a play that’s on the main stage at Tarragon Theatre,” Griffin said. “That’s really thrilling for me.

“All my life I’ve really admired talented actors and people on the stage. I can die a happy woman.”

One of Toronto’s 40 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) grads, and new Beach resident, says being a paramedic is a lot like her former career as a trapeze artist.

“It’s physical, but it’s exciting, and you never know what’s going to happen one minute to the next,” said Violetta Krantsevich talking about the similarities between the two careers.

Born in Minsk, Belarus, Krantsevich immigrated to Canada with her parents at age 11 in 2001.

“I grew up in what I like to call Little Russia: Bathurst and Steeles.”

Krantsevich said her parents thought she needed some extracurricular activities so they enrolled her in circus school where she was trained in trapeze and aerial hoop.

“I progressed to freelance circus acts for lots of weddings, corporate events. Loved the heights, loved the excitement, loved the non-nine-tofive job.”

Now Krantsevich has given up her love for heights for her passion for paramedicine. She may continue to perform trapeze acts as a hobby.

“It’s a nice way to de-stress.

Flying through the air, nothing is like that.”

“I can’t just say I play one on TV,” Richardson said following the graduation ceremony at EMS headquarters last Thursday.

Richardson, who was born in Etobicoke, has wanted to be a paramedic for as long as he could remember.

“I had the opportunity to visit stations and sit in ambulances when I was younger, visiting my dad at work, and it always gave me a rush,” he said. “My earliest memories have me looking forward to working as a

paramedic, and today I’m able to fulfill that.”

Richardson’s dad, Bruce, has been a paramedic for 37 years and plans to retire by the end of the year.

“Hopefully I get a chance to work with him before he goes,” the new paramedic said about his dad, adding “maybe I can convince him to stick around.”

Bruce joined the city’s ambulance service in 1976, the same year CPR was approved for use in the service.

“Most people weren’t aware of it.

They didn’t know what we were doing. They were afraid.”

For the most part back then, said Bruce, ambulance attendants kept patients warm, gave them oxygen and drove fast.

“No defibrillators, no monitors, not even blood pressure cuffs or stethoscopes,” he said, noting “these days there are medications, intravenous therapies; it’s more like a mobile hospital.”

Bruce said he’s honoured his son has chosen the same career path.

“I hope he finds it as rewarding as I have,” he said. “It’s one of very few professions where you have instant return on your efforts. You find out right away how successful you’ve been, and it’s very satisfying at the end of the day to know that you’ve been able to help someone.”

The 40 paramedic graduates have diverse backgrounds. They include professional dancer, hydraulics company owner, pet store worker and ski patroller. Toronto EMS Supt.

Kim McKinnon said the common denominator is a love of people.

City council approved the hiring of 51 paramedics in January.

“These 40 were the first group of paramedics to graduate from that group,” McKinnon said. The remainder will graduate July 19, bringing the number of paramedics in the city to 901.

his Monday, Canada will celebrate its 146th birthday. In honour of that special day, The Beach Mirrorr has compiled a list of ways to celebrate the founding of this great nation.

The list, which you can find on page 8, is more of a launching pad for community engagement – a way to connect with your neighbours, your immediate community and in some way Torontonians as whole.

It’s a chance to get out and enjoy the city: Perhaps you’re interested in one of the bigger celebrations such as the Scarborough Canada Day Parade or the events taking place in the Beach.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to stay home, why not call up a few friends and neighbours and host a barbecue.

Neighbourhoods across the city from Parkdale to North York, Etobicoke to Scarborough, East York to Bloor West have started community events, street parties, neighbourhood clean-ups and garage sales all in an attempt to bring people together.

The same energy that goes into these communitybuilding events can easily be focused on Canada Day.

In this issue, we take the idea of celebrating Canadiana with a few things you may have not even considered - although very Canadian: Learn about Canada’s history and the War of 1812 - did you know Canada Day was once called Dominion Day; watch the annual Robbie Soccer Tournament, which happens every Canada Day weekend; enjoy some ribs at any of the three ribfests taking place in the city; say cheers with Canadian drinks while eating Canadian food.

Really, what Canada Day is all about is being Canadian and all the great things this country has to offer. People from around the world immigrate here to enjoy a multicultural society focused on equality.

So in whatever way you decide to celebrate Canada Day, keep your fellow Canadians in mind and enjoy the nation’s birthday.

Mayor’s bluster costly in negotiations with province Monday might have been a good day for Mayor Rob Ford.

At noon, our mayor ventured onto the roof of city hall where he attended a flag raising for Pride Week, and read some kind words about his LGBT constituents.

It was a good sign for the city’s leadership. A few hours later, he dropped the ball on a more vital mayoral duty: negotiating an important financial deal with the provincial government.

These things come up – the province makes a financial shift that’s not to the city’s advantage and city officials sit down with their provincial counterparts to work details to balance the books. That didn’t happen this time.

By Monday afternoon, after a meeting with Finance Minister Charles Sousa, the mayor had branded the provincial government as a profligate enemy of the city, unmindful of the plight of Toronto’s “most vulnerable,” and jealous of Ford’s fiscal record.

david nickle the city for running an efficient government. They found out Mayor Ford can turn the city around and these people can’t.”

Then he threatened to continue with a modest tax increase, a cut to the land transfer tax and cut homeless shelters and other social services, and pin it on the province. Sousa was thus enabled to carry himself with an air of bemused frustration.

The city is well run and its books are in order?

Splendid. It shouldn’t be necessary to continue to prop up the city’s social housing with provincial funding. The city should end up ahead, no longer having to repay an old $200-plus million loan from the province – never mind the city had been considering it off the books since 2005. And even if it’s not... council need not hold “hos-

tage” its poorest residents.

The minister needn’t have said anything; Ford had tangled himself up well enough on his own.

Ford has spent the past year boasting about savings he has found the taxpayers, while city finance staff continue to find dramatic, seven-figure surpluses each year. To buttress his reelection bid, the mayor has promised to keep taxes low and take a chunk out of one of the city’s main revenue sources, the land transfer tax.

Any Ontario voter casually acquainted with city hall would be forgiven for concluding that the city doesn’t need their tax dollars like it used to.

Mayor Ford, with his very partisan bluster, hasn’t done anything to convince otherwise.

Indeed, in this matter he’s been Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s best friend.

Time for 905 to pay up I would like to remind Metrolinx and the provincial government that it has become a transit crisis because of decades of abysmal local and provincial urban planning strategies that have, in part, allowed urban sprawl to eat up Ontario’s greenspace.

I have seen all of our main east/west roads gradually turned into 905 expressways as Durham Region started to expand in the early 1970s.

It is time these satellite communities finally start to to pony up their own money for public transit. Torontonians have been ‘carrying the can’ for far too long and now can’t afford anymore fees or property tax increases.

This will be a back payment that is long overdue.

It was a Sunday of grueling labour under the hot sun, but members of the Beaches Lodge managed to build a village, an Egyptian pyramid, and a battle royale-themed fortress – all out of sand.

June 23 was Sandcastle Day at Woodbine Beach to raise money for Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH).

Despite predicted thundershowers, Torontonians gathered on the beach and boardwalk, some pausing to admire the craftsmanship of the sand structures.

“I think this is an event that’s really taken people by surprise,” said Graeme Boyce, the event organizer, and member of the Beaches Lodge, who thinks the beach needs to have more events for the community. “We don’t have that community here, we don’t have that connection to the beach.”

Sandcastle Day is in its seventh year and raised $600 this year for TEGH. Less teams showed up than expected due to bad weather reports.

Boyce’s son William and

two of his friends ended up winning the Beach’s cup for raising the most money with their sandcastle – a village with a moat around it.

“Simply because they walked up and down the boardwalk with their cup to raise money,” Boyce said. The team that collects the most money for their castle is the winner.

Other members of the Beaches Lodge built a detailed Egyptian pyramid as passersby stepped off the boardwalk to snap some photos.

“No pyramid is ever really complete,” said Eric Boyce, as he carved details into the side

with his three other teammates. Boyce said he hopes the event will eventually pick up like ones in communities around the world, raising thousands of dollars.

“If you do go to other sandcastle building competitions, there are huge teams that bring truckloads of sand with them.”

Teams join free.

“A couple of years ago a team of girls came down from East York Collegiate, absolutely kicked our butts,” Boyce said.

Canada Day in Riverdale Park REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com It’s the annual Neighbours Together celebration at Riverdale Park on Canada Day Monday.

Celebrations will kick off at noon with the national anthem and flag raising by the local Boy Scout troupe.

“We celebrate being Canadian together and all the great things our country has to offer,” said TorontoDanforth Councillor Paula Fletcher, whose office is sponsoring the event with fellow political TorontoDanforth representatives MP Craig Scott and MPP Peter Tabuns.

“There are many different ways that people celebrate either in large park settings or in just small gatherings on neighbourhood streets,” said Fletcher. “Whatever they do it’s to honour an amazing country that we live in.”

“We have an amazing corner of that country in the east end of Toronto.”

There will be performances throughout the day, along with award presentations for prominent members of the community, and a big cake.

Representatives from Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre, Woodgreen Community Services, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce (East Toronto), among others, will also be at the event.

“I’m hoping to join a dance group for Gangnam Style,” said Fletcher.

“We all come together and have a pretty exciting day there.”

Community members are also invited to an open house at St. Matthews Lawn Bowling Club, which was moved as part of Bridgepoint’s redevelopment, and designated a Heritage Site by the City of Toronto.

The club house, a classic piece of Riverdale history, is in its permanent new home in Riverdale Park at Broadview, opposite Langley Avenue.

The restoration was completed in 2011.

“It’s a new milestone for them having a place in the city,” said Fletcher. “We hope it will be a hub for greater things in Toronto’s parks.”

community Bury Eglinton LRT, wThesays Councillor province should back up recent comments by the provincial transportation minister and build a new light rail line completely underground, says a Scarborough councillor.

Taking issue with Minister of Transportation Glen Murray’s contention in early June that the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line (LRT) is a subway – since the majority of its planned route runs underground below Eglinton Avenue West – ScarboroughAgincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande said the entire 19-kilometre line should be built below street-level.

At last Tuesday’s meeting of Scarborough Community Council, Del Grande introduced a motion calling for all of the Crosstown, in light of Murray’s remarks, to run underground.

Currently, the line is slated to emerge from a tunnel east of Don Mills Road before continuing at street-level to its eastern terminus at Kennedy station.

The motion was adopted by a majority of the 10-member council.

Officially known as the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, the group announced last week that 116 politicians – 31 of them from Toronto including Premier Kathleen Wynne – have signed the pledge calling on the province to adopt Metrolinx’s recent recommendations for new taxes and user fees.

Report to look into making King Street streetcar-only during morning rush hour RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Following a board vote Monday, the TTC’s political body took the first step toward one day reserving King Street West for streetcar and bicycle traffic.

During its June 24 meeting, the TTC’s board of commissioners voted unanimously to support chair Karen Stintz and call for a report on the feasibility of making King and perhaps Queen Street West streetcar-exclusive during the morning rush hour period.

A motion introduced by Stintz asks for TTC staff to collaborate with the city to address specific details of the proposal, first floated by CEO Andy Byford last week which includes examining boundaries, means of enforcement, costs for implementation and other questions.

Following the meeting, she said the study, which will also require consent from the city’s

public works committee to go ahead, was necessary to determine how to serve ridership on King Street West, which could increase significantly due to new residential development in

traffic could take place by the 2015 Pan American Games, but refused to commit to a timeline for implementation until the report is complete so as not to prejudice its findings.

Bowmore Road public school grad now Canada’s fastest man Already an Olympic veteran, a 21-year-old graduate from Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School, who grew up in the area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard streets, can now attach the label of Canada’s fastest man.

Aaron Brown, who attended the exceptional program at Birchmount Park Collegiate, won the 100m sprint event at the national track and field championships, which wrapped up last weekend in Moncton, N.B. He won it Saturday, June 22 with a time of 10.25 seconds, qualifing him for the world championships, which will be held in Moscow, Aug. 10 to 18.

Not qualifying, however, was defending champion Justyn Warner, also a Birchmount Park Collegiate grad, finishing in fifth place (10.36 seconds).

Ironically, it was Brown who finished fifth last year and then pulled out of the

‘rising star’ exemption.

Both ended up as semifinalists in London.

Brown, who attends the University of Southern California, came into the national championships hot on the heels of a great finish to his U.S. College season, finishing fifth in both the 100m and 200m events at the U.S. college national championships.

Building a Better Transit System

Update

Improvements to Kingston Road scheduled from June to December 2013 As part of the TTC’s ongoing commitment to build a better transit system for Torontonians, starting in June, the Kingston Road streetcar tracks are being replaced and upgraded. These upgrades require road and track construction that can be disruptive and inconvenient. During this time, local shops, restaurants and businesses will remain open.

The TTC and the City of Toronto encourage you to continue to support them during construction.

What will this mean to Kingston Road TTC riders?

• Buses will replace streetcars all day, every day.

• Replacement of track begins.

• Bus service on north-south routes will be increased to handle increased ridership.

• Centre lanes and westbound lane closed, Victoria Park Ave. to Queen St. E. • 22A Coxwell bus service runs eastbound only on Kingston Rd. (every 6 to 12 minutes from Monday to Saturday, and every 8 to 12 minutes on Sundays).

• There will be sidewalk access to businesses during construction.

• 22A Coxwell bus service runs westbound on Queen St. E. via Blantyre Ave. to Coxwell Ave.

Picnic in the Park invited neighbours to bring their favorite picnic foods to where Circus Jonathan entertained and families got together.

“The evening was a tremendous success,” said Karen

Paul, chair of ROBBB. “We are getting to know one another; learning each other’s names; finding out what we like to do; talking about what we’re good at; sharing ideas for future events. This is all good: the necessary groundwork for a healthy, vibrant community…”

On Sunday, Toronto’s Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat teamed up with Cycle Toronto to take their consultation to the road – leading more than

50 urban cyclists on a round-about tour of the downtown to talk about the shape of cycling infrastructure in Toronto’s updated Official Plan.

“We want to go to where people are and draw new

people into the process,” said Keesmaat, as participants were lining up to sign up for the process in the shade of Toronto City Hall just before noon.

The rolling meeting was actually one of three city planning is holding. On Sunday, there was also a walking tour and on Monday evening there will be a transit tour.

But on Sunday afternoon, the question was two-wheeled. City planning is intending to incorporate a conceptual grid of bicycle infrastructure so no one would be more than one kilometre away from a bike path.

The tour took cyclists along a range of different cycling surfaces in the course of one loop of the downtown core: along Queen Street West from city hall to University Avenue, then north to the Royal Ontario Museum, then

east along Bloor Street, south along the separated bike lanes on Sherbourne Street and back across Gerrard Street and down Bay Street.

INFRASTRUCTURE “It was absolutely deliberate,” said Jared Kolb of Cycle Toronto, which helped facilitate the meeting.

“University being our largest, widest arterial at least in the downtown if not across the city; Bloor Street being a street that is ideal for cycling infrastructure but for years there’s been gridlock.

Riding down Sherbourne is the latest example of what is possible.

“This whole route is a diversity of streets.”

The participants in the ride were heavily weighted toward cycling advocates. Questions

and comments were almost entirely a question of how quickly cycling infrastructure can be constructed.

Keesmaat was fine with that saying cyclists would ride regardless of infrastructure.

“The risk to our city is that if we don’t build good infrastructure, that cycling never becomes a legitimate form of transportation...”

Keesmaat said the biggest growth area will be not in the downtown core, but in the old suburbs of North York and Scarborough and Etobicoke.

And she said that once a plan is in place, it will become possible to engage private sector partners in helping build more infrastructure.
