Canada Day across the city is full of opportunities to get together to celebrate our nation’s birthday. We‘ve prepared a package of city-wide and local events to guide you.
REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com Tuesday was the official launch of East End Arts at East York Civic Centre – the sixth official Local Arts Service Organization (LASO) in Toronto. LASOs receive municipal funding and “provide services aligned with those of cultural services at both the policy and operational levels,” according to the website. East End Arts will try to bring community and arts together, said Cindy Rozeboom, the managing director. “There’s a lot of artists in eastern Toronto, but we don’t have a structure,” Rozeboom said. “A lot of people go out to the west end to do stuff, so we’re trying to change that a little bit.” Rozeboom plans to spend her first four months networking with artists and assessing how programs already in place can be represented better. New programming will likely come in a year or two. Rozeboom, said she would like to see an online depository where people can submit photos, paintings, poetry or other forms of art inspired by areas in their neighbourhood.
