The Beach Hill Neighbourhood Association (BHNA) Tree Team has an important tool in its efforts to preserve and enhance the dense local tree canopy. A group of four graduate students from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Forestry recently completed a comprehensive urban forestry management plan for the east-end neighbourhood, which has about 42 per cent tree coverage compared to the average city coverage of 28 per cent. T h e 5 5 - p a g e s t u d y, researched and developed by Diana Guerguieva, Joseph Heeg, Mary Liston and Ram Nepal, was undertaken with the guidance of Prof. Sandy Smith. Anthony Upward, a founding member of the BHNA Tree Team, met Smith at a September 2010 tree-related event. Upward, who has lived near Woodbine Avenue and Gerrard Street East for the last 20 years, recently got in touch with Smith about helping the group with its ongoing tree maintenance efforts. “Every fall I run an urban forestry conservation course and I’m always looking around for communities that need some help. … I try to find communities that haven’t got a management plan yet, but could use some guidelines,” Smith said >>>STUDY, page 13

The Toronto-Danforth representative, who said she’s received several complaints from her constituents, said she feels the TTC didn’t fully consider where in the city it was placing the stop. “I think they just did it based on drawing a circle on a map...” said Fletcher, who has since received a response from Byford

assuring her he’d have TTC customer support staff take a closer look at the concern. Due to ongoing construction at Union Station, the TTC modified the 72 Pape route. The biggest change is the temporary splitting of the route, meaning there is no longer a dedicated 72 Pape bus that runs from Pape Station to Union Station/downtown. A transfer is now needed to the 172 Cherry St. to complete the trip downtown.
