Beach Studio Tour marks 20 years Kellway discusses recent trip to Bangladesh

Just more than 20 years ago, fibre artist Carolyn Barnett, her friend and fellow textile artist Susan MacDonald and a group of artisans got together over lunch to brainstorm about starting a studio tour in the Beach.

Barnett, who lived in the area at that time but currently

calls Kingston, Ont. home, was inspired by a studio tour she had attended in Perth, Ont., which is about 50 kilometres from Ottawa.

“There were so many artists and artisans here (in the Beach) and I thought we should have (a studio tour) here because we could walk from location to location,” Barnett said during a recent interview at an Upper

Beach cafe.

“There wasn’t anything like it back then.”

The team of local artisans embraced the concept and started working together to organize The Beach Studio Tour – Toronto’s first studio tour.

Making Kingston Road United Church more accessible JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Maintaining and repairing an 85-year-old community landmark is no easy task, but the congregation at Kingston Road United Church (KRUC) at 975 Kingston Rd. is up for the challenge.

“It’s an old structure that’s lovingly maintained,” said Ron Tooley, chair of the KRUC Council.

In recent years, the Upper Beach church has undergone a number of expensive, but much-needed repairs including the installation of a new boiler, roof replacement and repairs, as well as a new outdoor wheelchair ramp, new railings and an automatic door opener.

Combined, the cost of this work has exceeded $160,000.

Tooley said one of major projects to come is a new lift from the sanctuary into the main part of the building.

“We are embarking on another project for accessibility,” he said, adding KRUC’s goal is to be a meeting place everyone in the community can use and enjoy.

“We’re working towards making the church completely accessible.

It’s a really important initiative for us, a real priority.”

Church member Sharon Aylsworth, who has used a wheelchair for about eight years, couldn’t be happier her place of worship is becoming more accessible.

resident is unable to access the church’s chancel (altar), which has pews for the choir.

She also can’t get to the basement, accessible washroom or office area from inside the church.

Pipe organ As with many older buildings, accessibility wasn’t a mandatory when KRUC was built.

“Initially, I came to Kingston Road United Church because of the wheelchair ramp. I felt welcome here,” said Aylsworth, who last year organized a three-part art show to raise funds for the building’s repair and maintenance.

“On the other hand, I’m not as welcome in some of the leadership roles: to be in the choir or to speak at the pulpit. I realize it’s expensive to install an elevator or a ramp or other (accessibility) aids, but things can be done little by little.”

Tooley said another major project, which will be likely done in phases, is an upgrade to the church’s

aging pipe organ.

“It’s a beautiful old organ,” he said, adding KRUC is working on setting up a sustainable fund for future maintenance and repairs.

“There are always new projects to do.”

In an effort to support his church, Upper Beach resident and Toronto Symphony Orchestra bassist Tim Dawson started organizing fundraising concerts, which were recently branded as the Kingston Road Village Concert Series, about three years ago.

Held four to six times a year, the concerts feature professional musicians performing music ranging from classical to the avant garde.

All are welcome to attend, especially children.

All funds raised are directed towards the maintenance and repair of Kingston Road United Church.

“This is my way of helping out,” said Dawson, who has organized countless fundraising events for ore than 30 years for a range of causes and organizations. “As a musician, I felt I could make use of my connections and skills to help my church.

Sultans of String help Beach church launch concert series NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com The Sultans of String, whose founding members are longtime residents of east Toronto, are continuing their eclectic exploration of world music by hooking up with a Pakistaniborn sitar master who has lived in Scarborough for the past decade and whose music has graced such movies as Life of Pi and The Love Guru.

A matinee concert takes place Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Rd. The church will use the occasion to launch their own concert series in which they’ll raise money for improvements to their old building.

The Sultans of String, led by east-end founding members Chris McKhool from the Beach on violin and Kevin Laliberte from East York on guitar, will use the occasion to mark their live debut with sitar player Anwar Khurshid.

“We started writing songs together and it’s been a real interesting collaboration, kind of an east meets

west,” McKhool said.

“We play world music, taking in influences from around the world,

but we still do it kind of with pop sensibilities while Anwar is coming from this entirely different musical world.

“And where those two musics meet is where the real magic happens. We’ve been writing songs together and arranging some of our existing works together and this is going to be our first big public show.”

For McKhool and Laliberte – who have a busy year lined up taking the Sultans of String across Canada and the United States – it’s just about as close to a home gig as they’re going to get.

They’ve just come off one of their most ambitious projects, their fourth CD called Symphony! It’s already garnered praise, including: • World Group of the Year in SiriusXM Indie Awards; Instrumental Song of the Year (for Josie) in the Independent Music Awards; finalist out of 19,000 entries in the International Songwriting

Competition in instrumental category (for Monti’s Revenge).

The album is eligible for the next Juno awards and the band, which also includes second guitarist Eddie Paton, bass player Drew Birston and Cuban percussionist Chendy Leon, hopes it will make the list of nominees as did one of their previous albums, Yalla Yalla.

The latest recording was introduced Dec. 1 utilizing Scarborough’s Cathedral Bluffs Orchestra. It was that orchestra that sparked the symphony project in the first place.

“And now we’re playing with symphonies right across the country,” he said. For the actual recording of the CD, McKhool put together a 50- to 55-piece orchestra with members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Ballet and the Canadian Opera Company orchestras.

Help city improve its response to future weather emergencies

emembering last year’s floods and ice storm may not be on the top of Torontonians’ list of fun activities this month, but the city wants to hear from you about what it should be doing to help residents in future weather emergencies.

The ice storm of late December and the flooding after a massive rain storm in July saw our city hit with two unprecedented weather incidents that knocked out power, caused environmental damage and millions of dollars in property damage.

The massive thunderstorm of July 8 hit Toronto hard and fast. Rain hammered down in a line across much of the west and central parts of the city, causing power stations to flood and shut down, the subway line to close, roads to turn into small rivers and basements to flood. In the Don Valley, stranded GO train passengers had to be rescued by boats as water our view seeped into the train cars.

The ice storm wreaked Residents need similar havoc; knocking out power for days (in some cases to plan for weeks) as tree branches toppled emergencies under the weight of the ice and brought down power lines across Toronto. Hydro crews from across the province worked for days straight to restore power, and the city estimated some 20 per cent of Toronto’s tree canopy was destroyed. In some parts of the city, the damage was estimated as high as 50 per cent of tree canopy lost.

They were both huge incidents impacting hundreds of thousands of people and highlighting the need for all residents to take some basic emergency preparedness steps including stocking of food, candles and cash in case of similar incidents. It also showed how important it is for residents to keep an eye out for neighbours in need and offer help.

This month, residents can weigh in on how the city did in responding to these weather emergencies and what it might do better in the future.

Meetings are set for May 12 at the Scarborough Civic Centre; May 13 at Toronto City Hall; May 14 at the North York Civic Centre; and May 15 at the Etobicoke Civic Centre. All meetings go from 6 to 9 p.m.

Residents who can’t attend the meetings can share their input by going to the city’s website at www. toronto.ca/weatherprooftoronto A report on how the city dealt with the storms will go to the city’s executive committee July 2.

Taxes and services should be defining mayor’s race

O

ne thing that everyone seems to agree on in this mayoral election: transportation, and public transit, is a defining issue.

Well, let me be the heretic in the room for a moment, and suggest that may not in fact be the case.

I come by my heresy honestly, after having heard two candidates – front-runner Olivia Chow and trailing hopeful Karen Stintz – articulate as clearly as anyone yet has, how they’ll pay for the multibillion dollar downtown relief subway line.

Now, the downtown relief line has come up more than a couple of times in mayoral debates and announcements.

No one is opposed to it (although Rob Ford puts it at the bottom of his list of priorities). Also, nobody quite knows how to pay for it.

Stintz got things rolling early on the morning of April 29, outlining a

david nickle the city 15-year plan to raise $1.6 billion. She’d do that for the most part by diverting revenue from parking tickets and parking lots into a special transportation fund, and also charging an extra $3 levy on certain downtown Green P parking garages.

In the afternoon, Chow had a simpler plan. She’d cancel the Scarborough subway and the tax levy council approved to fund it, and having secured financing from the federal and provincial governments, institute a new tax levy to pay for TTC repairs and upgrades, and the downtown relief line – or rather, to pay for the $1 billion the city would borrow to fund the city’s share of those things.

Both plans are forward looking, and could probably work. One raises

some taxes more than some would like, one cuts some services and sells off assets more than some would like. Neither can really deliver the transit that Toronto needs on their own.

Chow made that point most forcefully when she spoke to the Toronto Region Board of Trade. She pointed out that Toronto receives just eight cents of the dollar its residents pay in taxes federally and provincially. And she points out that it’s not sustainable to expect Toronto residents to fund all or even most of the needs of an urban centre by itself.

She’s right, but doesn’t go far enough. The reality is that Torontonians could fund rather more of the things that are needed, through the relatively low property taxes we pay now, and through additional taxes that might be imposed by future governments.

Since amalgamation,

Torontonians have been trained to flinch from tax increases or new taxes to the point of self-destruction, even as we’ve grown to expect good customer service and reliable infrastructure.

We’ve been taught to avoid drawing a connection between those things – taxes, and services – to the point that we’ll send our elected leadership to work with an impossible task, and elect the ones who’ll most gleefully lie about their ability to complete it.

And that is the real defining question in the 2014 election: will voters finally show the maturity and intelligence it takes to pay for the things we all need, and turn away from comfortable lies and halfmeasures.

Will we collectively find the credibility we need to ask our fellow Canadians to do the same?

“The trade union movement here in Canada has been very active in the Rana Plaza disaster,” he said Tuesday morning.

Kellway, whose riding is home to Canada’s largest Bangladeshi community, said he’s wanted to travel to Bangladesh since being elected two years ago. “(The Rana Plaza disaster) became the obvious reason to go over,” he said, adding the issue of labour rights and occupational health and safety in the Bangladeshi garment industry has also touched and resonated with the non-Bangladeshi community in his riding.

to the streets of Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka.

“We came here in sorrow to commemorate the victims of Rana Plaza; to stand in solidarity with the workers of Bangladesh; and recommit ourselves in our work to reform the prevailing conditions in the ready-made garment sector here,” Kellway said April 24.

Kellway’s eight-day trip included meetings with labour leaders and worker organizers in the Bangladeshi garment industry.

He also met with survivors

of the Rana Plaza factory collapse on two occasions.

Kellway said one of the most moving experiences during his visit was seeing the site of the collapsed eightstorey Rana Plaza garment factory, which is located in the Dhaka suburb of Savar.

“There are dozens upon dozens of people there walking around with photographs of their lost loved ones,” Kellway said.

Kellway said the scale of the loss of life at Rana Plaza has strengthened his resolve to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again has been strengthened.

On March 2, Kellway introduced a motion in the House of Commons calling on the federal government to officially endorse the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, a binding agreement with retailers to improve labour rights in the garment industry.

Mayoral candidate Karen Stintz has a plan to fund transit expansion.

On Apr il 29, Stintz announced she would add a special $3 transit parking levy and divert revenue from parking enforcement and the city’s share of income from the Toronto Parking Authority to a special transit expansion fund.

Stintz made the announcement just a few hours before fellow mayoralty candidate Olivia Chow was set to unveil her transit funding strategy.

Stintz told reporters that over 15 years she expects to raise about $1.6 billion for a Toronto Transportation Trust that will pay for the city’s share of the eastern portion of the Downtown Relief Line.

“My plan will fund the eastern portion of the Downtown Relief Line without raising property taxes,” Stintz said.

pitting the downtown core against the suburbs.”

Stintz would raise the money – about $74 million a year for 15 years – from several sources.

As previously announced, she intends to get $500 million immediately from the sale of half of Toronto Hydro.

She said she would also gather $330 million taking net revenue from current traffic

enforcement operations, and $700 million from the city’s share of net income from the Toronto Parking Authority.

The only new revenue would be from a $3 dedicated transportation levy in Green P garages in the city’s downtown core.

Stintz said she wouldn’t raise property taxes or apply any other additional taxes to the transportation plan.

She said the city would have to cut programs currently funded by the parking and parking ticket revenue.

“Council will work together (to deal with those issues),” Stintz said. “We need to come together and make (transportation) our priority.”

Stintz pointed to a study released by the University of Waterloo and the Trillium Foundation that found that Torontonians deal with the longest commute time in the province.

Lucille Crighton, a Beachbased designer/handweaver, is the only artist in the Beach Studio Tour to have taken part in every edition throughout its 20-year run.

“When Carolyn invited me to lunch to discuss the local studio tour I was all for it.”

Crighton said one of the reasons she enjoys taking part in the Beach Studio Tour is the great group of artists who take part year after year.

“The artists are always interesting. We just have a wonderful camaraderie,” she said. “As long as I’m able, I will be part of the tour.”

Aside from being a great forum for artists to showcase their work, Barnett attributes the tour’s success to the organizing team, the strong community spirit and the opportunities it gives people to interact with artisans/artist in their home studios.

Upper Beach-based painter Nathalie Vachon, who also serves as the event’s chair, and her husband Ross Lynde wrote a song in honour of the Beach Studio Tour’s 20th anniversary.

“The 20th anniversary is a huge milestone for us,” said Vachon, a storyteller and writer. “The Beach Studio Tour is the first studio tour in Toronto and the longest running (one). The fact we’ve continued for so long is such a great accomplishment. We have a strong artist community and lots of support from art lovers and community sponsors.”

Vachon said the Beach Studio Tour is a great way for artists to showcase their work.

“It’s also a chance to inter-

act with people in the community, which really helps shape your work as an artist,” she said.

The self-guided tour features 24 artists and goes Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Each of the 14 locations will offer a prize draw for an original piece of work.

Refreshments will also be offered.
