Down Syndrome Association of Toronto hosts Buddy Walk The Down Syndrome Association of Toronto (DSAT) hosts the Buddy Walk, a threekilometre walk along the Ashbridges Bay Boardwalk Saturday at 11 a.m. A celebration with food, prizes and a social gathering will follow. Registration, which is free, begins at 10 a.m.

Founded by the National Down Syndrome Association 10 years ago, the Buddy Walk aims to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome, while raising funds for education, research, advocacy and community-based programs. Funds raised help individuals with Down syndrome lead
active lives, cultivate a circle of support and build a stronger community. T h e D ow n Sy n d ro m e Association of Toronto is a parent-organized and led registered Canadian charity, which receives no government funding and relies on private donations to provide programming for the community. While most of the
funds raised will remain with DSAT, seven per cent will be directed to the National Down Syndrome Society and its efforts for advocacy for people with Down syndrome. Metroland Media Toronto is a proud sponsor of this event.

The community is mourning the loss of 31-year-old Kristy Hodgson and her dog Betty, who both died days after being struck by a vehicle on Dundas Street East between Carlaw and Logan avenues. Shortly after learning about Hodgson’s death on Wednesday, April 29, people started dropping off fresh bouquets at a makeshift memorial, which also included three framed photographs nailed to a tree beside the Carlaw+Dundas wine and coffee bar at Dundas Street East and Carlaw Avenue in Leslieville. Someone also left a small teddy bear. Scores of others have shared messages of condolence on social media. The tragedy also had people talking about the need to improve road safety for all users. A “To remember Kristy and Betty” Go Fund Me campaign at www.gofundme.com/t8g4rwh9 has also been set up with the goal of raising enough funds to apply to the City of Toronto for a commemorative bench and plaque in honour of Hodgson and Betty. “Kristy was a wonderful >>>COMMUNITY, page 5
