Six years ago, the entry to East Chinatown was just a Green P parking lot on the north side of Gerrard Street East. Today, there’s still a parking lot, but towering over it is the Zhong Hua Men Archway – a traditional Chinatown gate that welcomes visitors to the bustling Asian markets and restaurants around the intersection of Gerrard and Broadview Avenue. And now, the gate is one of eight from across the country commemorated on a special release of Chinatown Gate stamps by Canada Post. The stamps were issued May 1 to celebrate Asian Heritage month. Local Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher said the arch, which cost nearly $1 million to build and is 15 metres high, has done the community proud. “The fact that the archway was built in 2009 means that

Toronto can be on a stamp in 2013,” said Fletcher. “It is the only archway in the City of Toronto. Canada Post has honoured eight cities altogether.” The gates are a traditional fixture of Chinese urban life. Known as paifang in Mandarin, the stone and wood structures were used to
indicate different neighbourhoods in Chinese cities. Toronto’s gate features unique elements to commemorate the experiences and trials of Chinese immigrants in the 20th century.

A room full of friends and neighbours celebrate her kind and generous nature DANIELA PITEO bsrm@insidetoronto.com
T
he hospital where Vera May Whittingham was born 100 years ago hasn’t survived, but 10 decades later, Whittingham remains to tell the story of the century she has experienced. On May 4, 1913, Whittingham, known to her friends and family as “May” was born to James and Rebecca Long in a small hospital on the Danforth in Scarborough. Her memory has started to fade, unlike the vibrant gold brocade dress she wore to celebrate her centennial birthday. It is clear that gold is a colour long favoured by the centenarian, with her beautiful gold dress and matching gold jewelry. Even the room that surrounds her is decorated with pink and gold wallpaper. meeting her husband Pink and gold may have been some of the colours she wore to one of the many dances she attended as a young woman; she no longer remembers, but she certainly remembers meeting her husband, Wilfred Whittingham. “We had a good time dancing, but I never thought he’d be my husband,” Whittingham said. “We went dancing all the time and we got to seeing each other a lot.” Whittingham said she didn’t accept his first proposal, although they did continue to see one another. “(Our relationship) turned out to be something really special,” Whittingham said. She met Wilfred as a teenager and married him before her 20th birthday – on April 1, 1931. Whittingham and her husband enjoyed several years of married life before Wilfred, an infantryman with the Canadian army, was sent overseas during the Second World War. A devout Christian woman, Whittingham considers herself blessed that he, unlike so many young Canadian men, returned home after the war. After the war, Wilfred began working at Canada Post, and today, Whittingham collects a widow’s pension from the com-

pany. The pension allows Whittingham to remain at home instead of being moved into a nursing home. She describes her married life as a happy one. The couple shared 64 years of married life, until Wilfred suffered a massive heart attack. Whittingham and her husband were known as a social couple who enjoyed going out, as they were often seen at Duckworth’s Fish and Chips in Scarborough.

fish and chips The typical British fare of fish and chips was a favourite of Whittingham, and she would enjoy it regularly with her husband. As much as she loved dining out with Wilfred, she was fond of preparing homemade meals. “I loved it when he sat down to the table for dinner. I would ask him, ‘You sure love to eat?’ and he would reply, ‘Of course I do, look at all the time you took to prepare it,’” Whittingham said. After six decades of marriage, the couple enjoyed countless meals together, until 1975, when Whittingham buried her husband, alongside their son who died in childbirth, at St. John Norway’s cemetery in Scarborough. Whittingham never strayed far from Scarborough and currently lives in the Beach, where she has spent the last 58 years at the same address. She is a fixture in her neighborhood and at the Toronto Gospel Lighthouse, having made friends with her neighbours and fellow parishioners. Pastor Austin Smith and his wife Vynette have known Whittingham for nearly 30 years, having met in 1985.

Vera May Whittingham (nee Long) holds a self-portrait during her 100th birthday on May 4. Whittingham was surrounded by friends and neighbours as she recalled the last century.
In 2003, when Whittingham’s last living relative, a nephew, died of cancer, Pastor Smith and his wife agreed to look after Whittingham. “She only allowed people to help her when she absolutely couldn’t manage,” Pastor Smith said. “May is a thinker, a very smart woman and extremely independent,” said Pastor Smith. “She is also very kind and generous.” As Whittingham’s short-term memory began to fade, she would rely on her long-term memories and share stories of
her youth with the pastor and his wife. talk about her father “May would often talk about her father. They had a very close relationship,” said Pastor Smith. “She was raised by her father because her mother died when she was just a young girl.” Gwen Holder, a parishioner at the church, has spent the last few years checking in on Whittingham since she is now bedridden and blind. “May has always been with it and she knows what she wants,”
Holder said. “I remember taking her to the hardware store and she immediately found a salesperson and said, ‘Young man, I would like to speak to you.’” “She was assertive, but not aggressive, and always kind,” Holder said. As Whittingham celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, May 4, with a room full of friends, it is clear her community loves her. Mark Block has known Whittingham for years. His mother, Barbara and Whittingham were close friends. Barbara has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia, illnesses that began to manifest during her friendship with Whittingham. While Barbara couldn’t leave Guildwood Extendicare to celebrate with Whittingham, her son happily attended on her behalf. “My mom’s health has deteriorated a lot over the years. She went through troubled times, but May was always around for her,” said Block. “I’ve seen a lot of people come and go out of her life as her condition worsened, but May never dropped off.” Block describes Whittingham as an incredible and strong woman, one of the kindest he has ever met.

Softball a hit in Topham Park for 40 years SEAN DURACK active@insidetoronto.com Lordy, lordy look who’s 40. The Topham Park Minor Softball League celebrated its 40th season in the East York community with a number of special events last Saturday at the park at O’Connor Drive and Drohm Avenue. From its humble beginnings in 1973, when Jim Carson and his wife Sue first started the league with 14 teams to its current membership of 51 teams, not a lot has changed for the minor softball league.

All about the kids With the exception of relocating from Victoria Park Elementary School to the three-diamond Topham Park, due to growth in membership and the introduction of new programing in 1979, the premise has remained simple and consistent, explained Blake Rogers, who has taken on many roles over the years, from convenor to umpire to coach to president. It’s all about the kids and the community. Rogers, who now serves as a standby official for the league, said memories are what are being celebrated in this 40th season for former players, coaches, parents and
officials. “Lots of memories. I’m sure many of them will be reflecting on how the sport and the league helped in the development of their children and, of course, the (development of) community. Builds community “Personally, the league has been extremely important to me,” he added. “I’ve always looked at it as an activity that helps build community. You get to know your neighbours, the kids in the neighbour-
hood.” Organizers were prepared for a good turnout on Saturday ad weren’t disappointed. “We’ve invited everyone,” said Susan Osborne, the league’s current president, in a an interview prior to the celebrations. “We have cake for 250.” The league and the sport are what defines the Topham Park community and make it unique, she said, something Osborne found out shortly after settling into the community as a young family 16
years ago. “Within six months people were coming up to us asking us if our kids played softball,” she said. “It’s hard to put in to words, but it’s really the core event for the spring season in our community, from the end of April to the end of June it’s softball at Topham Park,” she said. “ We t r u l y a re l i k e a family.” For more on Topham Park Minor Softball, please visit us online at www.eastyorkmirror.com

Pop-up shop entrepreneurs sought Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com The Danforth East Community Association is looking for visionary retail entrepreneurs to take part in its third pop-up shops project. Pop-up shops are a collaborative effort where landlords with vacant stores lend their unused space to temporary tenants looking to grow small businesses. In exchange, landlords get work such as cleaning and painting done free of charge by DECA volunteers, while also getting free advertising to help rent their spaces permanently. As well as help landlords rent space, and revitalize the commercial strip, the initia-
tive gives small business owners a chance to try their hand at running a commercial storefront. The program has been a success so far. “I’d do it again in a moment. It was fabulous to be a part of the pop-up movement,” said Gay Stephenson, owner of 1948 Danforth Ave., a space rented permanently through the project. “As a landlord, it was a terrific opportunity for us to get some painting and cleaning done by DECA volunteers. And the promotion on top of that -- we got 1,148 hits on our ad this month, which is amazing.” Interested business owners, artists and community organizations have until midnight
Wednesday, May 15 to submit an application to participate in the project by visiting www. danfortheastcommunityassociation.com. Participation requires a one-to-six month rolling lease commitment, and a weekly fee of $165 to cover taxes, utilities and program administration. After one month, participants will also be required to pay landlords 10 per cent of any monthly sales exceeding $7,500. Available storefronts are located on Danforth Avenue, between Monarch Park Avenue and Main Street. As well as landlords and small businesses, the project benefits the Danforth community by increasing interest and activity in the area.
Hundreds of people have applied to participate in the project since its October 2012 debut. So far, it has provided 18 businesses a chance to operate storefronts in eight properties, and rented out several spaces permanently. “I’m delighted by the popups. It’s an excellent program. It works,” said John Cassan, realtor for 1900 Danforth Ave. “I was able to rent the store out in an otherwise difficult block. I have a permanent tenant now. Don’t miss the opportunity to get involved.”

Danforth Mosaic BIA hosting open house Commercial real estate agents, developers and franchisors are invited to consider setting up shop on the Danforth, during a Danforth Mosaic BIA business open house this evening. At the open house, which takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 1347 Danforth Ave., listings and descriptions of more than 20 storefronts for sale and rent will be available. Networking The open house also features a presentation and networking opportunities, along with refreshments and appetizers. The available retail oppor-
tunities are located on Danforth Avenue, between Jones and Westlake avenues. “I opened my photography studio two years ago in this area,” said Jason Manos, owner of Toronto Model Photography at 1840 Danforth Ave. “I picked the area, because it was a low-cost location on the subway line. I was surprised to find that customers here were a lot more affluent than I expected. Young, professional, upper-middle class people live around here. It’s changing.” Email info@danforthmosaicbia.com for more information.

Where are Toronto’s worst roads?
The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is inviting road users again to name the province’s worst roads in its annual campaign launched this month. We want to hear from you too – which road in your neighbourhood deserves being named the worst? It can be a stretch of road strewn with potholes as Dufferin Street is known to have – and not surprisingly received the people’s choice award as being the worst in the province in last year’s CAA campaign. Maybe it’s poorly marked lanes or a bottleneck that constantly results in slow and excess traffic. Community input is important to help prioritize road construction work especially in the city where dayto-day driving takes a major toll on the road infrastructure. The country’s largest auto club suggested the provincial government establish a dedicated fund for road work to be paid through provincial gas tax revenues. The province currently reaps $2.3 billion annually through its excise tax, stated CAA spokesperson Faye Lyons. More will be necessary for the continual upkeep of roads to help lessen gridlock and subsequently improve economic productivity. We encourage all residents to provide feedback on how to tackle this issue. Several ideas are already out there that warrant further discussion such as Premier Kathleen Wynne’s recent announcement during the provincial budget this past week that new tolls to use high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes could raise money for transit construction. Metrolinx has also recently recommended revenue tools for transit infrastructure improvement such as introducing parking space levies and a dedicated portion of sales tax on consumer goods, which will be debated by Toronto council later this month. In the meantime, the money that is already earmarked for road improvement work should be spent on areas of the city that need it the most. Let us know which roads in your neighbourhood are seemingly neglected and need more attention by emailing us at letters@insidetoronto.com To learn more about the CAA campaign, visit www.caaworstroads.com and make your selection for the province’s worst road. Results are expected to be revealed next month.

City needs to look at tourist-friendly projects In little over a week, Toronto council will finally get a chance to make the call on a downtown casino. It’s a good bet council won’t be voting yes to a casino in the core of the city. Opposition is not unanimous, but decisive, and it seems unlikely the provincial government will sweeten the pot of Toronto’s hosting fee to sway enough to make a difference. And so, no casino, at least not downtown. The debate, once that final vote happens, will be over. Or will it? It may be true that Toronto doesn’t need or want a casino, but that’s not to say Toronto doesn’t need, or really want, more infrastructure to promote tourism and jobs and investments. Currently, the city’s core is developing effectively as a mass of tall condominium towers filled with tiny apartments. In the midst of those, Toronto does have assets: museums and galleries and sports venues and even a certain amount of convention space. But if the city wants to
david nickle the city encourage visitors beyond the parents of 20-something condo dwellers in Liberty Village, it’s got to do something. Once the casino is out of the way, it would behoove our leadership to start thinking about that. As City Manager Joe Pennachetti noted in his report outlining the benefits of a casino, Toronto needs more convention and trade show space near the downtown if it’s to be competitive with other destinations. A casino, Pennachetti said, would be an easy way to kickstart that development. That sounds like a mission statement. Council should, if they reject that casino plan, start looking at other ways to redevelop downtown properties in such a way as to draw visitors. Building a giant new convention centre with nothing but property tax and
municipal debt might not be a good idea. But finding ways to create incentives for that sort of development would be a good use of, say, the city’s economic development committee’s time. Toronto could look at how well it promotes its existing convention space and see if there’s a way to maximize it. It could look at its public spaces, and see if there’s anything that can be done to improve them beyond making them welcoming, and making them mesmerizing. In the past, Toronto’s done well for tourism fueled by a relatively open border, a low Canadian dollar and a thriving theatre scene. The dollar’s too high, border crossing is a pain and the theatre scene isn’t what it used to be. A casino wouldn’t, by itself, have made up for all that. A concerted, positive effort based on consensus, investment and genuine civic pride, though... that might be just the thing.

TTC bike racks a waste of money, reader writes The installation of bicycle racks at the front of TTC buses is a total waste of taxpayers’ money. Just look around and see how many bicycles are carried on those racks on any given day. Bus ornaments The buses are for carrying passengers and bicycles are for people to ride. The TTC always cry out for more funding from taxpayers, yet they can waste millions to install such ornaments on the buses. I suggest that TTC Chair Karen Stintz try to sell the racks to a scrap dealer so she can recover some of the money. Kenneth Singh

Bike rental: go small and concentrated
U
sually it doesn’t make sense to reward a faltering business with more investment. Business types advise everyone steer clear of an idea after it has already failed, never mind twice in the same market. When applied to the challenges facing Toronto’s troubled Bixi bike rental program, these recommendations seem obvious. From 2001 to 2006 Toronto hosted North America’s most popular bike sharing program, only to face financial ruin due to multiple factors. Two years ago the city entered into a 10-year agreement to loan up to $4.8 million to provide a bicycle rental program in Toronto. Already the program is in financial trouble. Should the city decide to stop the red ink, we stand to recover less than $1 million of public funds. Put another way, the potential loss is equivalent of giving away to each of the program’s subscribers an
david soknacki beyond the headlines $850 bike. Recognizing that the mayor’s executive committee will be unreceptive to giving bike sharing a third try, the chair of the TTC proposes to ask TTC staff “to explore how it could be a complement to the TTC.” If the issue boils down to finance, then TTC’s conclusion ought to be obvious. But, we need to consider that in every other one of the 375 bike-sharing programs around the globe public subsidy is required. If Toronto wants to have a bike-sharing program, a realistic analysis must conclude that our program will need subsidy from taxpayers as well. In return for public funds, there are quantifiable benefits in a reduction of congestion, a means to connect transit users to their closest transit stop, and to
speed up short trips. Thanks to well-documented studies of both successes and failures worldwide, we know what can be done to maximize bike usage, and how to minimize public subsidy. In order to achieve these benefits, Torontonians need to recognize that bikesharing is most effective in the downtown core, or in other very dense areas, such as on Yonge Street between Sheppard and Finch. It is not a program that works well in much of the suburbs, mainly because users want to drop their bikes off at convenient stations. In London and Paris, these are 300 metres apart at most. On the other hand Toronto has just 80 stations. As a result, we have the choice of making an impact in a concentrated area, or suffering low usage rates. In many ways the constraint of starting small and concentrated serves so many purposes. Even with the huge amount of experience, uncertainty and
obstacles remain. For example, we know that London’s transit organization integrates their bike-sharing program with their facilities, and allows payment on their transit card. Can that be done in Toronto? There are similarities and differences between our needs and objectives, other models, and how well others’ experience applies to our situation. In short, it is disappointing, but perhaps not surprising, that Toronto’s latest bike-sharing venture is in financial trouble. To repeat the mistakes of the past, by simply expanding the existing program will almost guarantee failure and annoyance from the public. On other hand, the opportunity of the present to review Toronto’s experience, then to focus on what works, will give bike-sharing a realistic and viable future. Perennial team scoring leader hopes to end playoff drought for Beaches Junior A team NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com You would be hard pressed to find any athlete, pro or amateur, with more years in a single organization than Jordan Robertson, who will lead his Toronto Beaches Jr. A lacrosse team into their season and home opener against the Six Nations Arrows this Monday, May 13 at 8 p.m. at Ted Reeve Arena. “I’ve only ever played for the Beaches my whole life,” said the team captain who lives minutes from Ted Reeve Arena at Warden and Danforth avenues. “I think I started playing lacrosse when I was four, I guess. And I’m turning 20 in September of this year so 16 years it’s going on now.” He’s referring to club lacrosse, of course, as he has definitely also provided his lacrosse services to his school, currently with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and previously with Birchmount Park Collegiate. While his longevity of service is worthy in itself, his scoring prowess is actually the more relevant news hook. The 11-team Jr. A league he plays in is the top league for youth in the province – the equivalent of major junior A for hockey – and he’s led his Toronto Beaches Junior team in scoring for all three years he’s suited up for them, increasing his point totals each year: • 69 points (37 goals, 32 assists) in 20 games in 2012; • 58 points (34g, 24a) in 20 games in 2011; • and 50 points (24g, 26a) in 22 games in 2010. And last fall, he led his University of Toronto field lacrosse team in scoring with 40 points (29g, 11a) in 12 games and in the process was named a 2012 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association West Division All-Canadian. The highlight of his youth career, he said, was winning the Jamieson Kuhlmann Award, which is bestowed annually by the Ontario

We’ve got a good core group of guys back - we didn’t lose very many players. – Jordan Robertson
Lacrosse Association to a midget player combining lacrosse, citizenship and academic skills. It’s handed out in memory of the 15-year-old Beach resident who died in a freak lacrosse accident in May of 2008. “That (award) was pretty dear to me,” said Robertson. If there’s been one disappointment, it’s not being able to get the Jr. A team back into the post-season during his tenure – something he believes could change this year. ‘Good core’ “We’ve got a good core group of guys back – we didn’t lose very many players,” he said. “We have a lot of players on the team who have a little bit more experience now and kind of know the way the league works and the calibre they have to play to. “And the new young guys
that we did get are skilled and are hopefully going to bring a little edge to our team and help us with that playoff push.” The team is also in its second year since an organizational overhaul brought in new management, led by head coach and general manager Bruce Codd. Codd retired last year from the Toronto Rock, his final pit stop after a 13-year career in the National Lacrosse League (NLL), and this year he served as assistant coach for one of his former NLL teams, the Calgary Roughnecks. “With our new coaches that stepped in and our new management, they’ve kind of brought a whole different look to the team and kind of helped change the vibe a little bit in the organization and for the better,” Robertson said. “They seem to somehow just get everyone to work a little harder and be a little bit more motivated.” Robertson is also a good hockey player, suiting up in his youth for the East Enders at the double-A rep level “up until Grade 12.”

Leslieville resident creates company with goal of hiring only aboriginal tradespeople JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With a dearth of Aboriginal Canadians in the trades, Leslieville area resident Jesse Darby is doing what he can to change the situation. Darby has started his own contracting company, Darby Design and Build, with an eye to assembling an entire team of First Nations workers to handle every aspect of a build. “My main ambition is to get as much of the contracts we get done by Aboriginal tradesmen: construction, plumbing, electrical, HVAC – all of it,” he said. The Toronto-born Darby belongs to the Serpent River First Nation in northern Ontario. The George Brown College graduate completed his apprenticeship through Miziwe Biik, an Aboriginal employment and training program. While he has cast a wide net looking for tradespeople, including reaching out to Serpent River, Darby has yet to reach his goal of hiring all Aboriginal workers for his crew. “ I ’m t r y i n g t o g e t Aboriginals back into the trades and back into build-
“Residential construction work right now is booming but there aren’t a lot of (Aboriginal) tradesmen coming into the trades,” he said. “I’ve had a few people come forth, but it’s all about getting the word out there.” By providing work incentives, Darby said he hopes to inspire more Aboriginals to get involved in the trades. ing. Right now, there are a lot of carpenters because Miziwe Biik has a pre-apprenticeship carpentry program and also an HVAC program.” Thus far, Darby Design and Build has taken on smaller contracts with various homeowners, though, to date, the company has not taken on any full builds. Darby said he hopes to have a team assembled quickly to take advantage of the opportunities throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
“I’d like to be a role model to other Aboriginals,” he said. Darby has lived in the east end of Toronto virtually his entire life. He said he enjoys his current location near Greenwood and Dundas Street East as the community is close-knit and convenient. “In places like Scarborough and Mississauga, the intersections are so huge. Here, you’re really close to things and anything you need is just around the corner.” For his work in encouraging Aboriginal Canadians to enter the trades, Darby was awarded the Toronto Aboriginal Business Awards’ Abor iginal Male Youth Entrepreneur of the Year.

Tourist-friendly projects needed

n little over a week, Toronto Council will finally get a chance to make the call on a casino in the city’s downtown. It’s a good bet, so to speak, that council won’t be voting yes to a casino in the core of the city. Opposition on the council floor and on the ground is not unanimous, but decisive, and it seems unlikely that the provincial government will sweeten the pot of Toronto’s hosting fee to sway enough to make a difference. And so, no casino, at least not downtown. The debate, once that final vote happens, will be over. Or will it? It may be true that Toronto doesn’t need or want a casino — but that’s not to say Toronto doesn’t need, or really want, more infrastructure to promote tourism and jobs and investments. Currently, the city’s core is developing very effectively as a mass of new, shall-we-say efficient
david nickle the city housing in the form of tall condominium towers filled with very tiny apartments. In the midst of those, Toronto does have assets: museums and galleries and sports venues and even a certain amount of convention space. As city manager Joe Pennachetti noted in his report outlining the benefits of a casino, Toronto needs more convention and trade show space near the downtown if it’s to be competitive with other destinations. A casino, Pennachetti said, would be an easy way to kick-start that development. That sounds like a mission statement. Council should, if they reject that casino plan, start looking at other ways to redevelop downtown properties in such a way as to draw visitors.
Building a giant new convention centre with nothing but property tax and municipal debt might not be a good idea. But finding ways to create incentives for that sort of development would be a good use of, say, the city’s economic development committee’s time. Toronto could look at how well it promotes its existing convention space and see if there’s a way to maximize it. In the past, Toronto’s done well for tourism fueled by a relatively open border, a low Canadian dollar and a thriving theatre scene. The dollar’s too high, and border crossing is a pain, and the theatre scene isn’t what it used to be. A casino wouldn’t, by itself, have made up for all that. A concerted, positive effort based on consensus, investment and genuine civic pride, though... that might be just the thing.

community Province pledges to GO service wexpand The provincial government wants to beef up GO Transit service over the next decade. This year’s budget, delivered on May 2 by the Liberal minority government of Premier Kathleen Wynne, lists as 10-year priorities extending regional transit into “underserviced” areas, increasing rush hour service and working towards all-day GO train and bus service. For 2013, the Liberals want to boost GO’s service capacity 20 per cent, increase ridership by 50,000, add 16,000 parking spaces and spend on infrastructure upgrades. No dollar amounts are given. Part of The Big Move transportation plan, the GO expansion will cost $4.9 billion (in 2014 dollars) to complete. The Toronto Financial District BIA wants public feedback on prospective designs for street pole “wraps.” The wrapping will protect street poles along Bay Street from graffiti and adhesives, says the BIA, which was formed in 2011. It’s asking the public to choose one of two patterns at its website www.torontofinancialdistrict.com. Respondents can also provide feedback on improving the designs. The new-look street poles are part of overall improvements to the area, including new banners, street furniture and sidewalk repairs, intended to give Bay Street a uniform look.

Toronto’s East Chinatown archway gets stamp of approval Six years ago, the entry to East Chinatown was just a Green P parking lot on the north side of Gerrard Street East. My mom is the greatest because she has always striven to be and do her best in her life, despite obstacles, despite letdowns, despite adversity. She is continually learning, doing and being and will be 70 years old this July. She is a great mix of classiness, optimism, and fun. She is culturally aware and interested in staying current with news, ideas, music, literature, art, etc. She is the go-to person in our family for the latest cool restaurant or musician or news person. We love her, admire her, and hope to be just like her when we are 70!

Two-day celebration begins Saturday >>>from page 1 the school’s alumni organization, the Malvern Red and Black Society, which organized the reunion. “It will be a wonderful weekend at Malvern,” she added. “We know that we’re going to have one graduate come who went to Malvern in the 1930s – she’s in her 90s – and we’re going to have a fair number coming who were from the 1940s, and then the bulk are ’50s, ’60s and ’70s (graduates).” The festivities kick off Saturday morning with an opening ceremony featuring the Malvern C.I. Alumni Band, conducted by LieutenantColonel Frances ChiltonMackay, an award-winning musician who graduated from Malvern in 1974, before going on to become the first female director of music for The Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada, the Canadian Force’s most prestigious band. The opening ceremony also features performances from the school’s choir and cheerleading team, greetings

We have all the yearbooks back to 1924 and all the commencement programs back to 1903... – Vandra Masemann
from guests and a tribute to Principal Line Pinard, who is retiring from teaching. Saturday events include meet-and-greets in decorated “decade rooms”, a daytime dance with golden oldies played by current students and decade-themed pub nights at local establishments. At 10 a.m. Sunday, all residents are invited to attend a memorial ceremony at the school’s cenotaph. Other reunion highlights include guided, historical walking tours and an extensive archival display. “We have been working on our archives for 10 years,” said Masemann. “We have all the yearbooks back to 1924, and
all the commencement programs back to 1903, so people can look up their relatives, grandparents and so on.” A decade of monthly archival meetings also inspired a new book. “We were able to get a lot more information that we could publish in the book as a result of all our research, so we thought it was a good time to sort of collect all that information together and do that,” Masemann said. “We also had put out a Malvern centennial book for the 100th (anniversary), but now we’ve updated that and we’ve added all-new material ... We wanted to be sure to do as much as we could to capture the first 110 years, and to leave that in good shape for the next generations to come.” Scores of student volunteers will help execute the event, which also features student-made art and historical displays.
