Celebrating Victoria Day

®

Toronto’s annual Victoria Day fireworks display is set to take place Monday at 9:45 p.m. at Ashbridges Bay Park, east of Coxwell Avenue and south of Lake Shore Boulevard East. The event takes place rain or shine. There will also be a special viewing area for people with disabilities. Visit www.toronto.ca for more details.

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It’s the most wonderful – and messy – time of the year in the Beach. Each year from Victoria Day Weekend until Labour Day, thousands of people enjoy spending time in the community’s parks, beaches and along the shoreline, but many neglect to pick up after themselves. “So many people are upset by (the mess) after the Victoria Day fireworks and it goes on all summer,” said Elizabeth Berry, an artist who has lived near Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue for more than 35 years. “Everybody’s disgusted by the litter.” Berry, who enjoys taking daily early morning walks along the shoreline, said she was so appalled by the amount of trash people leave behind she decided to do something about it. Last year after the Victoria Day long weekend, she got out her easel and did a watercolour painting of one of the numerous piles of trash left at Woodbine Beach. Called Woodbine Beach Litter, her artwork was then printed on 75 T-shirts with the slogan ‘Pick Me Up at the Beach.’ People could purchase a shirt for $20, with proceeds donated to efforts to educate people about keeping the beach clean. >>>ARTIST, page 15
