“I had a headache and it just got worse,” she said during a recent interview.

Leigh Jacques, Jillian’s mom, remembers that day very well.

“Jilly didn’t sleep that night because she was up with a headache,” she said.

“Our family doctor was unavailable so we took her to SickKids where they did a battery of tests.”

then 11-year-old woke up with a swollen nose, which doctors discovered was an abscess on her nasal septum, the cartilage wall separating the nostrils.

Why do we do this? The health of our children is too important.

There are far too many signs our children simply aren’t as healthy as we were during our youth.

For instance, in a recent SickKids Health and Happy Pulse Check survey, 79 per cent of adults 55 and older think children’s lifestyles are not as healthy today as compared to their own childhood.

That belief – and actuality – needs to be reversed.

As a child, Erick Bauer can remember tearing up and down the halls of the Hospital for Sick Children.

Diagnosed at age five with cystic fibrosis (CF), Bauer was in and out of the pediatric centre until he turned 18.

The hospital became his second home, a source of great comfort, he said.

“It was always positive – even though I was dealing with negative issues,” said the Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue-area resident. “One of my favourite things was to go down to the cafeteria with my mom and we’d get a Jell-O.” Bauer was far from alone during his regular treatment visits.

In addition to his family, Bauer relied on a former elementary school classmate and friend, with whom he reconnected on a deeper level at SickKids as a teen.

He and Steve Cameron, who now lives in Leslieville, forged a strong bond both facing life-threatening diseases together. Bauer, battling CF and Cameron, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s large cell anaplastyic lymphoma, were patients at SickKids during the summer of their Grade 10 year.

“We spent a lot of time there,” recalled Bauer. “In hindsight, we appreciate what a great place SickKids is. You might not realize it at the time, but afterward, the difference it makes in patient’s and families’ lives – we wanted to give back to the hospital.”

Cameron recalls a lot of good came out of a place where he experienced the worst time of his life.

“It’s pretty incredible they’re able to provide the best situation for the worst situation,” he said.

“You’re well taken care of with state-of-the-art equipment, the facilities are great and they’re just getting better.”

To show their appreciation the men created the Friends for Life Foundation (FFLF), a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is

to unite people in the fight against cystic fibrosis and cancer while raising awareness and funds for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the oncology unit at SickKids. Since its inception in 2005, FFLF has raised more than $500,000.

“The idea behind Friends for Life was born out of the relationship Steve and I had and what we went through at SickKids. Him, radiation treatment, and me, regular treatment visits. We spent a lot of time there,” Bauer said.

Today, more than 12 years after their friendship was formed as 16-year-old patients, Cameron is in remission while Bauer continues to battle CF. Through FFLF, the two work tirelessly to put an end to the two devastating diseases.

They are launching a grant program, sponsored

by Scotiabank and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, to support CF and cancer patients financially.

They discovered that families and individuals, who were

facing these illnesses and were forced to relocate from across Canada to Toronto to receive world-class care at SickKids, needed additional help.

Through the grant program, FFLF will distribute as much as $50,000 annually.

Last year, the foundation expanded to Calgary.

“We had friends and family members who had moved out west to Calgary – Steve’s younger sister had moved out there – key people who had started FFLF in Toronto had moved out west,” Bauer said. “The idea arose to start a Calgary chapter.”

A second annual west-coast gala will be held in October.

Meanwhile, FFLF will be hosting its keynote gala in September.

Typically, the event boasts a theme that directs the dress code, atmosphere and entertainment, said Stefanie Cali, director of fundraising, and Bauer’s wife. The gala is comprised of live performances and live and silent auctions.

Cameron and Bauer are gearing up for the annual FFLF Open Golf Tournament in July.

Beach mom creates Active Kids Club to get kids out and exploring JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Friluftsliv, a Scandinavian term that basically translates to fresh air life, is a way of life for Beach resident Kari Svenneby.

A classically trained chef and librarian, Svenneby grew up with a love of the outdoors and nature.

She said she fondly remembers countless Sunday hiking and crosscountry skiing outings with her family and friends.

“That’s how I grew up,” she said.

This outdoor living philosophy is also the basis for the married mother of two’s successful business, Active Kids Club.

Maia, was just a baby.

She was new to Canada and wanted to meet like-minded parents of young children.

“I wanted to meet other moms and other kids (for my daughter to play with),” said Svenneby, a proud “Polar Bear Mom,” a mother who takes her children outside to play year round.

Active Kids Club started out as a website that had an extensive listing of outdoor playgroups.

It has since evolved into a grassroots community helping connect children and adults to the outdoors by providing simple and creative ways to get outside through play, cooking and lifestyle.

“Active Kids Club has really followed our lives,” Svenneby said.

“It’s not just about being outside for kids, but letting them explore.

Today, kids spend most of their time in front of a screen.”

Svenneby is an advocate for get-

ting outside in the city and often visits green spaces in Toronto and area with her family.

“There’s so much in the city to explore. I’m so lucky to live in such a big city and have all the opportunities we have around here. (The Beach) is a very community oriented area and there are so many ways to get outside and live,” said Svenneby, who in each summer travels with her family to an off-the-grid cabin in her homeland of Norway.

Because of the club, Svenneby is often retained to consult and speak to groups about the value of “go outside and play” as well how to market themselves on social media.

More tests were done and within hours Jillian was rushed into the operating room for emergency surgery to remove a life-threatening infection that had spread to the surface of her brain.

Jillian continued to experience several post-surgery strokes, but day-by-day her condition started to improve.

“We were a bit unsure of her quality of life, if she’d have a normal life,” Leigh said.

“From one day to the next, our lives were turned upside down.”

However within three weeks, Jillian was making progress and was able to go home.

For the next six weeks, a nurse visited her daily to change her IV antibiotics.

She also did weekly physiotherapy.

For the next 12 months, she wore a special helmet to protect her brain until it healed enough to replace the large piece of skull that had to be removed when she first fell ill.

Doctors initially planned to repair Jillian’s skull with a plastic implant, but surgery was unsuccessful as cerebral spinal fluid began to accumulate. An alternative plan was to place a tube in the centre of her brain and a small dial behind her

Jillian, a Grade 8 student at St. John’s Catholic Elementary School on Kingston Road, said the care she received at SickKids was “really good” and feels grateful to the “friendly” staff for saving her life.

“If Jilly was at any other hospital I don’t think she would have survived,” Leigh said.

“It was just fantastic care she received. She probably had five or six teams following her. They basically saved my daughter’s life on two occasions.”

ear to help drain excess fluid, which is then reabsorbed into her body through a small tube that goes into her abdomen.

That life-saving surgery was done May 25, 2013.

Today, Jillian is a normal teen. She

can run and play sports, but needs to be extra careful not to injure her skull.

Doctors have yet to figure out what caused Jillian’s abscess, which usually occurs as a result of some sort of trauma, her mother said.

As a sign of gratitude, the Jacques family has organized the firstannual Joggin for the Noggin, a fundraising event for The Hospital for Sick Children’s Neurosurgery Department.

“We just want to give back because they helped me a lot,” Jillian said.

Set to take place rain or shine Sunday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at Ashbridges Bay, the one- and fivekilometre run/walk event aims to raise funds and awareness for SickKids Hospital, while bringing the community together to celebrate the gift of health, community and a hospital that helps so many.

The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) released the second edition of its recommendations for the prevention of childhood obesity recently.

The guideline is called Primary Prevention of Childhood Obesity.

It provides recommendations for nurses, doctors, teachers and parents to help prevent child obesity.

Information is provided on how to establish healthy habits in children in their early years, as well as how unhealthy foods are marketed.

Statistics Canada reports 31 per cent of children age five to 17 are either overweight or obese. These kids are susceptible to illnesses such as diabetes, stroke and hypertension. The guideline focuses on social factors that contribute to higher obesity rates.

“Fast food restaurants, the prevalence of processed foods, lower levels of physical activity and a sedentary TV and video game culture. These are the ingredients for a staggering epidemic,” said Carol Timmings, chief nursing officer with Toronto Public Health, in a press release.

The guideline is aimed toward children from infancy to elementary school. RNAO said focusing on early years will help make preventive actions more effective to combat childhood obesity.

Growing healthier children now will save grief later in life

anadians believe our youth do not have a healthy lifestyle. We are twice as concerned about obesity in our youth than any other health risk.

That says a lot about the physical conditioning of our youth. But it also says there is hope for our youth – if we heed the warning signs and act now.

It’s Healthy and Happy Month (healthyandhappy. com) at The Hospital for Sick Children and this year the theme is centered around prevention of youth health issues.

Growing healthier children now will save much grief later in life when they become unhealthy adults falling victim to many of the bad decisions made when young.

And all of this is increasingly taxing on the healthcare system – overburdened and underfunded given increasing demands.

The hospital – affectionately our view known as SickKids – conducted a survey, and here’s an example of Help our what they found.

• 56 per cent said society must kids become do everything it can to improve healthy the lifestyle of today’s children.

• Bullying, obesity, child abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, suicide, depression all rank high in the minds of Canadians.

• 78 per cent say children today are getting less exercise compared to their own childhood.

• 65 per cent say children today have poorer eating habits.

• 59 per cent say children are receiving less nutritional value in what they eat.

• Mental illness is the second most concerning illness among young people.

Add to the fact that UNICEF ranks Canada 27th out of 29 industrialized nations on obesity. When that stat was shared, 21 per cent of Canadians said it motivated them to personal action.

That would amount to a significant amount of action, but it’s not enough. We hope through the stories you read in today’s themed edition and the stories you read online at http://bit.ly/SeO3ai or www. beachmirror.com, you will be motivated to help preserve the health of young people who are part of your world. This may be the first generation of Canadians who do not live as long as their parents. That’s a hard concept to accept in a society where we generally are able to control many of the threats to our children’s health. We must not let that happen.

Doug Ford not the only one offering poisonous sentiments on the Griffin Centre issue Whilst his brother cavorts about cottage country on day passes from addiction rehabilitation, it’s reassuring to see that Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford is keeping up the Ford name and all it stands for here in the city.

As the Etobicoke Guardian’s Tamara Shephard reported last week, Doug Ford showed up – late – for a meeting at Toronto police’s 23 Division to take on the Griffin Centre, a home for developmentally disabled youth on behalf of its angry neighbours.

According to Shephard’s report, Ford told the staff of the centre that they had “ruined the community” in the Kipling Avenue and West Humber Boulevard area.

The two-month-old centre is a house, where four youth – some with autism – live under super-

david nickle the city vision. Some of the youth have behavioural issues that manifest in outbursts sometimes requiring police to attend. The staff at the centre sometimes park on the street. Sometimes, the youth who live in the centre are permitted outdoors.

It was this last point that seemed to shock Ford: “You can’t destroy a community like this.

People have worked 30 years for their home... My heart goes out to kids with autism. But no one told me they’d be leaving the house. If it comes down to it, I’ll buy the house myself and resell it.”

Later, he asked if any of the children were sex offenders (for the record:

staff at the centre said none of them are).

It’s difficult to know what to say about Doug Ford and his mayorbrother Rob anymore.

They have so debased the public discourse in the past year, that even when one of them passes an evening stirring up an angry crowd to run a house for disabled youth out of town, it’s hard to properly admonish him.

But let’s leave Doug alone a moment, and ponder some of the other comments that Shephard collected last Thursday night from those in attendance.

“This is not a place for mental people. This is a residential area. Why don’t you build a house out on a farm?”

“When my child says, ‘Mommy, why are there police here again?’ What do I say?”

“This is a community for people, not for that.”

Councillor Ford’s remarks ride the crest of that wave of unfortunate NIMBY-ism – and one might argue that his and his brother’s reign at Toronto City Hall these past three and a half years were propelled by the same poisonous sentiment.

In October, odds are good that voters from most of Toronto will send the brothers Ford from Toronto City Hall – probably for good.

But the insular, fearful, uncompassionate and fundamentally selfish sentiment on display at 23 Division last week – the sentiment that allowed the Fords in to begin with – it will take a great many years to rid ourselves of that.

Woofstock at Woodbine Park this weekend Woodbine Park is set to go to the dogs this weekend as Woofstock, North America’s largest festival for dogs, sets up shop in the Beach.

The two-day, free outdoor dog festival and consumer expo is expected to draw upward of 300,000 people and 250 vendors/exhibitors to the community Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This year’s Woofstock is set to include a doggie fashion show, the Mr. and Mrs. Canine Canada Pageant and the Running of the Pugs, a Cirque Du Canine show as well as a Doggie Kissing Booth.

Some of the festival’s other fun dog-related activities and events will include wiener dog races, dog trick workshops, a stupid dog trick contest, a chill zone for dog people and a doggie photo booth.

The Canadian Kennel Club has also arranged to have some of the rarest Canadian dog breeds, including the Canadian Eskimo Dog, the Newfoundland and the Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retriever, all together in one place for

Leslieville Farmers’ Market season starts Sunday JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Daniel Taylor can’t wait for the Leslieville Farmers’ Market to open Sunday.

In early April, Taylor enthusiastically took on the role of the popular weekly market’s new manager.

“I’m ridiculously excited about this summer. It is kind of a dream job for me,” he said.

Taylor, who grew up in Riverdale but currently lives near Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue, is passionate about the environment and community building.

He studied environmental studies and urban planning at York University.

In between his studies, he spent the summer north of the city planting trees.

“Spending time in these large industrial clear cuts, especially in Northern Ontario, was a huge eye

opener,” said Taylor, who couldn’t believe the level of destruction humans do to the Earth in such a short time. “(That experience) really solidified my desire to have a future in sustainability.”

After graduating from university, Taylor worked on green roofs, including the one at Carrot Common on Danforth Avenue.

“That was an amazing experience that got me into the community,” said Taylor, who then landed a special assistant position with Councillor John Filion where he was tasked with coming up with “out-ofthe-box” ideas to connect with and animate the community.

‘Bee Lady’ Karen McKenna organizing Requiem for Bees Saturday JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Leslieville “Bee Lady” Karen McKenna has a bee in her bonnet when it comes to protecting the hard-working insects from deadly pesticides.

A high school teacher by day, McKenna spends her free time taking care of and working to protect bees from the harmful effects of neonicotinoid pesticides.

“It’s a huge issue in beekeeping. This new pesticide is a derivative of nicotine and it’s very toxic for bees and other pollinators like butterflies,” said McKenna, who grew up in York Region before moving to Toronto’s east end about two years ago.

For the last seven months, McKenna has been working tirelessly to put together Requiem for Bees, an opening event for the Toronto edition of the international March Against Monsanto, a global call to action aimed at informing the public and calling into question the long-term health

The mock funeral concept was inspired by the 1972 march by People or Planes, a grassroots movement that opposed the construction of an international airport on 18,600 acres of prime farmland in north Pickering.

Fifteen anonymous beekeepers donated the dead bees to fill the coffin, which is the same one used in the 1972 protest.

“I really want to keep this (issue) in the news. Especially with the election coming up, it’s an opportunity to take action,” said McKenna, who will give a short speech at Requiem for Bees alongside Rachel Parent, a teen crusader from the group Kids Rights to Know.

McKenna grew up with an affinity for bees.

“My uncles kept bees right on the farm property in Ireland,” said McKenna, who said she had a childhood obsession with honey and Winnie the Pooh.

“Even as a little, little kid I wanted to be a beekeeper.”

Her interest in bees piqued about 15 years ago and she started learning as much as she could about the vital members of the food chain.

One of the places she went to learn was the Kortright Centre for Conservation’s bee yard, which has been managed by volunteer beekeeper Horst Goeldner since 1977. Goeldner, who has been keeping bees since 1949, quickly became her mentor.

Four years ago, McKenna finally decided to take the plunge and build her own

hive.

She now sells raw honey beeswax soaps and beeswax candles as well as the honey she’s harvested at various events and farmers’ markets.

This winter, all of her bees died due to unknown circumstances.

“I would like to expand, but my bees keep dying, u n f o r t u n a t e l y, ” s a i d McKenna, who also speaks to various groups and at various events throughout southern Ontario about beekeeping and the harmful effects of pesticides.
