Blue Flags will once again be flying at eight of Toronto’s beaches this summer. This year’s recipients include Bluffer’s Park, Centre Island, Cherry, Gibraltar Point, Hanlan’s Point, Kew-Balmy, Ward’s Island and Woodbine beaches. In order to sport the prestigious eco symbol, beaches and marinas must meet rigorous environmental education, water quality, environmental management and safety and services criteria. “A Blue Flag symbolizes that a beach or marina is clean, swimmable and meets high safety and environmental standards,” said Brett Tryon,

Environmental Defence’s Blue Flag program manager in a May 20 release. “ When you see a Blue Flag flying, you know you are at a world-class beach or marina.” The designation is only valid for one season and must be reassessed annually. The Blue Flag program, which originated in France in 1985, is managed internationally by Denmark’s Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization consisting of member organizations representing 68 countries >>>TORONTO, page 8

Bike lane re-opening averts ‘very dangerous situation’ JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Just in time for Bike Month, the bike lane on Dundas Street East from Pape to Carlaw avenues in Leslieville has re-opened to cyclists. Initially, the plan was for the lane to be off-limits for a year while Streetcar Developments staged the construction of two condominium projects at 1220 Dundas St. E. and 345 Carlaw Ave. However, the busy cycling route was becoming a safety

concern and an alternative situation needed to be considered, Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher said on Tuesday. “It was a very dangerous situation, actually,” she said. “Dundas is such an important thoroughfare for cyclists.” This led to a site visit as well as several meetings with Ward30Bikes (the local cycling advocacy group), city staff and the developer. A successful motion was also made at Toronto and East York Community Council. >>>PARKING, page 10
