Garden for seniors, kids at Eastview REbecca field rfield@insidetoronto.com An intergenerational garden to be used by children and seniors is being built at Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre this week.

The garden is being built in collaboration with the local Boys and Girls club and Evergreen Brick Works.

It is part of a food program that will allow community members to grow food that will be used at the club, as well as donated to shelters.

“It’s more like a learning garden and an opportunity for children and seniors to do some gardening that they wouldn’t normally get to do on their own,” said Laurette Jack, the children’s programming supervisor at the community centre.

Seniors and children will get the chance to plant food, herbs and edible flowers, and tend to the garden throughout the summer.

“The kids can do stuff for the seniors, and the seniors can teach kids about stuff that are in the garden,” said Jack who will be organizing programming surrounding the garden this summer, as well as a summer camp themed on the environment and the arts.

Beach Hill Spring Fling beautifies neighbourhood REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com The Beach Hill Neighbourhood Association (BHNA) held a Spring Fling to raise money for the beautification of the Gerrard Street neighbourhood Saturday, May 25.

More than 150 people attended the event, which included yard sales, a live performance from the local band The Lost Boys, food, plant sales and a tree naming ceremony.

“The goal was to really put a focus on Gerrard and to get people to keep using local businesses and keep them alive,” said Kate Tennier from the BHNA. “We’re trying to bring back the commercial district that was once here,” said Tennier, who emphasized that businesses are already there, but not occupying every storefront.

The city will be extending the tree wells on Gerrard Street to add 23 more trees, as well as planted flowers. Construction will take place in June, but the tree planting won’t take place until fall.

“The whole idea is that the more beautiful you make it, then that will attract hopefully more people to

“I think what’s interesting is that this is a trend across Toronto, that you’re getting little neighbourhood associations growing all over.”

The Beach Hill Neighbourhood Association was created last June and has grown to include initiatives such as the Gerrard Bucket Brigade,

Beach Hill Bench Project, as well as local softball.

“We’re in this big city, which I love, but you also want to be kind of local.”

During the day, Tennier led a treenaming tour across Gerrard Street with members of the community who adopted the trees.

“People off Gerrard are the adopt-

ers, and then the businesses are part of what we call the Bucket Brigade,” Tennier said. The businesses will receive orange metal watering cans that they will use to maintain the tree wells once they are put in place.

Michelle Ostafin and her daughter live on Normandy Street, they adopted and named a tree “Precious.”

“There’s a real sense of community here,” said Ostafin who spent the day selling plants.

“I can’t believe how many people I’ve met through doing this. It’s a really nice way to gather.”

n today’s newspaper we’ve presented the 11 funding tools Metrolinx was considering as ways to find $34 billion to fund the first part of the Big Move project in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

There’s been plenty of debate about these tools, how transit expansion should be paid for and who will pay. Ultimately, all roads lead to the Province of Ontario when it comes to these questions.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency tasked with building and financing the Big Move transit expansion, has recommended four of the 11 revenue tools in a report, which will go to the province and affected municipalities by Saturday. You can find which four Metrolinx said no to; which three it listed our view as supplemental measures; the four it passed on to Tell your MPP and the province in our exclusive your thoughts look online. Other players with a stake in the Big Move, on Big Move including the City of Toronto, CivicAction and the Toronto Region Board of Trade have their own positions on the funding tools; this is also reflected in our report.

The Big Move is a huge project with many spurs of transit growth, and multiple jurisdictions with competing priorities. However, we are all part of the same transit/traffic mess, and it’s hurting our economy right now in long commute times and increased business costs. We’ll all pay the price for not getting the Big Move right.

The onus is on taxpayers to understand the situation and its impact. It’s your tax money that will potentially fund transit upgrades. It’s easy to just say no to taxes, but then you have to be able to offer other sources of funding and be part of the solution.

We hope our report will let readers better understand some of the ways in which Metrolinx thought the Big Move could be funded, and how those funding tools would work.

Take a look at them and then let your local MPP know what you think, and what you would be willing to accept and pay.

It is the province that will decide which revenue tools to implement, and right now we have a relatively unstable minority government situation.

Hopefully, the importance of better transit will trump politics when making these decisions.

Metrolinx shows leadership; unlike councillors In the midst of the political apocalypse unfolding here at city hall, it’s nice to see that things aren’t collapsing everywhere when it comes to the governance of our city.

On Monday, Metrolinx released its preferred revenue tools to pay for transit expansion in Toronto and the surrounding communities.

The revenue tools preferred are a one per cent hike in the HST, a five-centper-litre gas tax, a 25 cent commercial parking levy and a 15 per cent increase in development charges.

Metrolinx also recommended tolls on HOV lanes, parking fees at transit stations and a land value capture tax as supplemental tools for funding.

The total cost for the average household would be $477 a year, according to Metrolinx’s calculations.

More for big families.

All of this was too rich for the broken instrument that Toronto council had become earlier this month,

david nickle the city when it attempted consensus on ways to raise money for transit expansion. The best council could do then was ask for a couple more subways, and tell the provincial government to find the money to pay for it elsewhere.

The political appointees that currently make up Metrolinx are, sadly, left to be the grown-ups.

Toronto needs that politically mature guidance right now. The city and the region that surrounds it desperately needs to update and expand its transportation infrastructure. Those families being hit up for $500 to $1,000 a year in new fees will be needing that infrastructure as more families arrive.

And council? Beset by scandal in the mayor’s office, its members divided... In its current state, it’s never been less fit

to govern this city.

As Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday has pointed out, the business of the city goes on as it collapses. And that’s true, inasmuch as Toronto is 90 per cent a service delivery organization and as long as it’s financially sound and retains a professional bureaucracy, the city itself will work.

But that crucial 10 per cent, which involves moving an agenda forward and crafting policy – looking at the city we’ll have five years from now as opposed to dealing with the one we’ve got – is beyond Toronto.

Fortunately, the most crucial policy question of this term – how to fund and build better transportation – has been taken away from Toronto council and given to an unelected body. Under ordinary circumstances, that would be cause for alarm. These days, it’s a lucky break.

Zoo’s elephants deserve better While we are basking in the pandas who are costing a great deal to keep at the Toronto Zoo, maybe we could give a thought to the poor elephants.

They looked pathetic last year when I saw them. I think we could do better than that. Who is being selfish to keep them from going.

I would like to hear that every animal lover in Toronto has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper to approve a cargo plane to take the elephants to where they need to go before they have to stand another summer here. What a life.

Take in a Beaches Jr. A game Riverdale heart attack survivor participates in Becel Ride for Heart REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com Sunday’s Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart will see a Riverdale heart attack survivor riding for the 20th time.

Mick O’Meara, 72, cycles up to five times a week and takes his health seriously.

Despite this, he suffered a heart attack Dec. 4 and was found unconscious at his house after calling an ambulance.

“I guess I was a little annoyed because I thought I work hard at keeping fit, and a heart attack is not supposed to happen,” said O’Meara.

His heart attack was caused by inflammation leading to a blocked artery.

Paramedics were able to get into O’Meara’s home after he unlocked his front door after calling them – a tip he picked up from the Heart and Stroke Foundation pamphlets he was sent over the years.

“This is the sort of heart attack that can happen to anyone,” said

O’Meara. His heart stopped four times on the way to the hospital, but he survived and was out of the hospital after only four days of care.

He attributes his fitness level to his quick recovery, as the surgeons initially suggested he stay for nine to 12 days. “They (the hospital staff) were fairly impressed.”

“Fitness is a major factor in recovering from anything – a cold, or flu,

or running up stairs, or whatever – fitness is the recovery vehicle,” said O’Meara.

An avid cyclist since the 1950s, O’Meara said he is always eager to join the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride.

After becoming a survivor, he contacted the Heart & Stroke Foundation to share his story and his history with the ride.

On May 1, he attended a public launch of the cycling season called “with heart”. The event was held at Yonge-Dundas Square and featured sponsors and health-related booths.

The Becel Ride for Heart starts at 8 a.m. June 2; a longer 75-kilometre route begins at 6 a.m. More than 13,000 cyclists are expected to attend.

The charity has set a goal of raising $5.5 million this year.

It is now completely sold out, but donations are still open if you would like to sponsor O’Meara or any other rider.

The Toronto Beaches provincial junior A lacrosse team have had a tough start to their season with four losses, including 8-7 to the visiting Mississauga Tomahawks Sunday.

Improvements to Kingston Road scheduled from June to December 2013 As part of the TTC’s ongoing commitment to build a better transit system for Torontonians, starting in June, the Kingston Road streetcar tracks are being replaced and upgraded. Eastview’s intergenerational garden to officially open June 13 >>>from page 1 out the community centre’s green roof. The garden was made possible by a grant from Evergreen Brick Works as well as Wal-Mart.

It will include raised beds for all the food, compost, and a trellis made with bark from black locust branches, which community centre workers have turned into rope.

The garden is set to officially open June 13 at 4 p.m. at the centre’s 86 Blake St. location, but fruits and vegetables are already being planted.

“We’re super excited to see a community that is so supportive of the food project,” said Ashlee Cooper from Evergreen.

By late morning, water had receded enough in the south-

bound lanes to allow cleanup crews to sweep away mud left behind after the Don River had crested its banks.

Flooding took longer to clear in northbound lanes, which remained closed for a good part of Wednesday.

“It’s unbelievable to me that we had that much rain that it closed the Don Valley,”

said Kevin Leicht, from the Beach where he said a lot of sump pumps are running this morning.

“It’s amazing, all I heard last night was a huge downpour,” Leicht said. “I didn’t realize how bad it was.”

Toronto Hydro received approval from its regulator, the Ontario Energy Board, to build an electricity transformer station in downtown Toronto. The construction site is located at the historical Roundhouse at Bremner Boulevard and Rees Street.

We are hosting an Open House for the community at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. There, you will be able to meet key project members, learn more about the construction project, ask questions and share your feedback.

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, June 6, 2013 Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Room 205D 255 Front Street West 4 – 7 p.m.

BACKGROUND This is the first station built in the downtown core by Toronto Hydro since 1955 and will provide electrical service to buildings and neighbourhoods in the central-southwest region of Toronto. The station will be built under the existing Machine Shop at the west end of the Roundhouse property, which will be re-assembled after construction is complete. Building the transformer station mainly underground will minimize its footprint and allow it to blend-in aesthetically with the neighbourhood. The transformer station is expected to be complete by the end of 2014.

Loading up for the long-term: Here’s why Toronto Hydro is investing approximately $195 million in the new transformer station: It will enable replacement of 1950’s-era equipment currently being used at the nearby existing Windsor Transformer Station.

Once its first phase is in service, it will add 144 MVA of capacity, which is equivalent to approximately 70 condo buildings.

The station will power major Toronto institutions including the CBC, Rogers Centre and the new Ripley’s Aquarium. It will also connect to new infrastructure along Queens Quay which is being revitalized as part of Waterfront Toronto’s vision for a showcase along the waterfront.
