Transformation of Old Don Jail receives award The Old Don Jail, which houses Bridgepoint Active Healthcare’s new administrative building and the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation, has been recognized for its notable adaptive use/rehabilitation. The “Palace for Prisoners,” at 550 Gerrard St. E., is one of four
national recipients of a prestigious Ecclesiastical Insurance Cornerstone Award for Building Heritage. This accolade is part of Heritage Canada National Trust’s National Heritage Awards. Canadians from across the country nominated recipients
for the various awards, which aim to recognize individuals, organizations, corporations and rehabilitation projects that give new life to Canada’s historic places. ERA Architects Inc. and +VG Architects Ltd. were in charge of repurposing the cavernous 77,000-square-foot prison into
its present use as Bridgepoint’s offices and a research centre. The brick, limestone and sandstone exterior of this oncederelict building were repaired and restored, while its interior spaces were also rehabilitated to create a bright, sustainable home for Bridgepoint staff. >>>OLD, page 12

Saunders is perhaps best known for his ‘Drug Series’, where he created more than 50 self-portraits while under the influence of myriad prescription and other drugs, all donated by people who heard about his so-called experiment. “Art is his therapy. It’s his outlet to express himself,” Parker said of Saunders, whom he said had a “tough childhood” and “tumultuous teen years.” “I think art was the thing that saved him. He’s quite a brilliant artist, but an even more interesting character.” In Art of Darkness, Saunders – who admits to having “sociopathic tendencies” – is open about his varying mental state and the importance he places >>>SAUNDERS, page 10
