Rehab work begins at Harris water treatment plant on Queen Restoration work has begun to improve the settling basins and associated plant equipment at the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant at Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue.

The work is expected to last until the fall of 2018, is being done to prevent rain and ground water infiltration through the roof of the settling basins, maintain the structurally sound condition of settling basins and access roads, and provide uninterrupted production of drinking water for years to come.

The project is part of the Toronto’s 2015-2024 Capital Works Program.

On Friday, the Toronto Christmas Market will open its sixth annual edition with a tree-lighting ceremony of its 54-foot-tall Norway spruce at 6 p.m. The evening will also include a concert by The Next Generation Leahy as well as a performance of the holiday class Hallelujah by 10-yearold Aja Neinstein, winner of Perez Hilton’s Can you sing?

Fundraising events are planned for the coming weeks to raise money, collect food and gather toys for CC55’s Share-A-Christmas program, which this year is expected to serve upwards of 1,000 local families.

Starting this weekend and for the next four weekends, food will be collected at Freshco at Victoria Park Avenue and Gerrard Street East. Food donation barrels will be rolled out throughout the community in the coming weeks for the program. “ We couldn’t do this without the community’s support and generosity,” said Debbie Visconti, CC55’s executive director. “It is all about neighbours helping neighbours.”

he CN Tower lit up in blue, white and red on Friday night, symbolizing the solidarity of Torontonians with the people of France after the terror attacks in Paris.

As more reports surface about the Islamic State group who claimed responsibility for the attacks, it’s in solidarity we stand up against the hate demonstrated through their violent acts that left more than 120 dead.

While police have stepped up vigilance in public spaces in light of the Paris attacks, we need to be vigilant now in promoting, reaffirming and upholding the values of respect that’s crucial to living peacefully in a multicultural city such as Toronto.

Just as the actions and beliefs of the Islamic State group aren’t representative of the local Muslim community, let’s make it clear the actions and beliefs of the few who are committing these hate crimes aren’t representative of all Torontonians.

As Mayor John Tory noted in a vigil last weekend at Nathan Phillips Square, any retaliatory attacks only target the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with the actions of extremists such as ISIS. “These people who perpetrated these attacks represent no one,” he said. “They are not representatives of any faith or nationality; they are people that have decided to take on a set of values and try to destroy our way of life.”

It’s also important to heed the mayor’s statement that the city will run business as usual.

For Toronto residents, that means living peacefully in a city that prides itself on its diversity.

Do not give in to the fear, the anger, the hate It was barely a year ago that the shootings in Ottawa made their lasting impact on security at Toronto City Hall.

Since that day, security has stationed a single guard at the little-used north entrance to City Hall, which gives quick access to the elections office and the City Hall Press Gallery. The door is locked, and only those with key-cards can make it inside.

Otherwise, there has been very little change – visible change, at any rate – in the way security is conducted at the centre of government of Canada’s largest city.

There has been no local equivalent, certainly, of the federal Bill C-51 enacted by the old Harper government to broadly empower police and security agencies and to limit freedom and privacy rights, beyond the level that those agencies themselves deemed necessary.

But for those working at City Hall? A well-mannered, unarmed guard watching a

david nickle the city door that’s used mainly by employees, and otherwise it is business as usual.

Well, it’s not entirely business as usual. Over the course of that year, Toronto elected a new mayor, and in the course of the year that mayor, John Tory, was moved not by fear, but by laudable compassion for Syrian refugees, fleeing from the same terrorist gang that inspired the Ottawa shootings. Tory, unlike other political leaders in this and other countries, has made it clear Toronto will be a welcoming place.

And so it is that as we consider last Friday’s atrocities in Paris, we do so from a city that has generally acquitted itself well in the face of terror, in a manner similar to those good Parisians who opened their doors to strangers, stranded in their locked-down city.

Torontonians too are good people, or at least have the demonstrated capacity for goodness, and courage, and levelheadedness.

That capacity may well be tested. As I write this on Tuesday, police are investigating what appears to be a hate crime – the beating of a Muslim mother on her way to pick up a child from school in Don Mills.

A mosque was also burned in Peterborough over the weekend.

These things both seem to be hate crimes, brewed from that toxic combination of fear and anger. Given Torontonians’ general civility and levelheadedness, there is legitimate hope the incidents will be outliers.

The question now is what we do next, and the answer immediately is to simply carry on with our lives as they had been.

The terrorists would prefer that we not, that we show them a trembling respect by withdrawing from civic engagement, by

isolating the religious and cultural groups from whom they would like to recruit, by posting more guards, agreeing to laws that restrict our liberties even further.

We should prefer to do otherwise. On Tuesday, the city announced an exceedingly generous private donation to build parkland in an ugly space underneath the Gardiner Expressway. That is cause for celebration.

We will soon be welcoming new residents, first as refugees, then perhaps permanent residents and finally if they choose to remain, citizens. As this goes on, we will work and plan and sometimes squabble over how best to build transit and repair public housing and improve our lives here.

That is a busy and virtuous schedule. There is no time in it for fear, and there is no place in it for hate.

Annaleise Carr, 2012 and 2014 Ontario Junior Citizen, Simcoe, ON At 14, Annaleise Carr was the youngest person ever to swim across Lake Ontario. Two years later, Annaleise swam across Lake Erie. Combined these efforts raised awareness and hundreds of thousands of dollars for Camp Trillium, a family camp for children with cancer.

Her book, Annaleise Carr: How I Conquered Lake Ontario to Help Kids Battling Cancer, inspires others to take on great challenges and help their fellow citizens.

Lanes named for Beach residents On Saturday, Nov. 7 the City of Toronto unveiled three lane names in Ward 32.

The lane west of Silver Birch Avenue and south of Kingston Road is now known a Bob Fraser Lane. Fraser, a decorated Second World War veteran and prolific artist, has lived on Silver Birch Avenue

for his entire life.

A T-shaped lane between Rainsford and Brookmount roads, nor th of Queen Street East, is now known as Dominic Parker Lane and Inuksuk Lane.

This lane honours longtime Beach resident Dominic Parker, an off-duty Markham

firefighter who was fatally stabbed in September 2013 at the former Rotana Café at 1530 Danforth Ave., just west of Coxwell Avenue.

The inuksuk is representative of the work done by a community that is united by common goals.

Traffic safety campaign launched on Lake Shore at Carlaw and Leslie A new traffic safety and enforcement campaign has been launched by 55 Division.

Throughout November, officers will be directing enforcement to the two high-collision intersections: Carlaw Avenue at Lake Shore Boulevard East, and Leslie Street and Lake Shore.

These intersections, which are both impacted by heavy rush hour and industrial traffic as well as pedestrians and cycling activity, were selected based on analysis of incidents of traffic collisions/safety concerns in 55 Division.

They’ve also both identified for increased enforcement with a focus on reducing collisions and enhancing public safety.

During the campaign, police will be working to enforce pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle offences and encourage the public to be aware of these laws and consider the safety of themselves and others.

Drivers are reminded to be responsible, plan ahead and make smart choices about their transportation.

Drivers are also urged to never drive impaired, to discourage others from doing so, and to call 911 if necessary if they see a suspected drunk driver on the road.

“The message is clear: do not drink or use drugs and drive,” Toronto police said in a statement.

The police service urges people to use public transit, assign designated drivers or take taxis if they are drinking.

Police report 1,151 drivers in Toronto were charged with impaired drivingrelated offences this year as of Tuesday. Police issued 1,012 drivers with a 90-day licence suspension. Another 444 drivers received a licence suspension of three, seven or 30 days. Five of the 55 fatal collisions on Toronto roads this year involved drivers who were impaired.

Police cruisers in 55 Division are now sporting new decals advertising the local division’s Twitter handle @TPSD55.

Fifty-five division is the first station in Toronto to have its vehicles outfitted with the stickers.

The Toronto Police Service is hoping social media will help better inform people, as well as engage with the community.

Toronto police will crack down on all types of impaired driving over the holiday season during the annual festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign that starts today.

Toronto police are launching this year’s campaign in partnership with other police services and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) at Humber College’s north campus in Etobicoke.

Sir Tom Jones visits Opera House on Queen to discuss new book British musical legend Sir Tom Jones will be visiting Riverside Wednesday, Nov. 25.

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com According to City of Toronto c h i e f p l a n n e r Je n n i f e r Keesmat, a new city-building model centred around complete streets is vital if Toronto is to thrive as it becomes denser.

Speaking last week at a symposium at the 519 Community Centre, Keesmat espoused the virtues of building up “main streets” to help preserve neighbourhoods, help local businesses prosper and keep the city livable.

Titled “Building Vibrant Main Streets and the Power of Local” and hosted by WoodGreen Community Services, the symposium brought together business leaders and community builders from across Ontario.

Building up avenues, Keesmat said, would increase Toronto’s walkability – and in turn its liveability – by ensur-

ing residents could access the services and amenities they need right in their own neighbourhoods.

That would mean building up many of Toronto’s avenues to ensure each neighbourhood has a vibrant mix of retail, health care and other services.

“Walkable communities exist and thrive when there is a main street (with services provided) within walking distance of the home,” she said.

Building up main streets to the necessary level – Keesmat pointed to Brooklyn, where four- and five-storey buildings are the norm – would be particularly difficult in some parts of the city.

“Our city is not predominantly characterized by main street retail, in fact, the vast majority of our city is suburban,” she said.

While some might be opposed to increased density,

even on their larger avenues, Keesmat said it would have a positive impact on problems such as traffic congestion.

Taking a main street mentality means designing streets that provide bike lanes and wide sidewalks instead of focusing on how many cars they can handle.

“It’s about making more trips that are reachable by foot,” she said, noting “cars actually fall to the very bottom of the list (of priorities) if your focus is on planning for people.”

Planning streets in this way would provide a boon to local retailers. Providing more widespread retail instead of centring retail in destination centres such as malls would encourage people to walk or bike to run errands.

That, along with the building of communities, would allow mom-and-pop retailers to thrive, which would benefit the city as a whole.

“We need to know freedom comes at a price.”

Pte. Logan Guitard, a reservist with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, was invited to take part and shared a few words about what Remembrance Day means to him and why he gives of his time to serve his country.

Guitard, who is studying to become a police officer, said the main reason he joined the military was to “protect those who can’t protect themselves.”

He also impressed upon the students that there are a lot of children around the world who don’t have the same oppor-

tunities they do and to never take the rights and freedoms they enjoy for granted.

“I want the kids to remember a lot of people went before them and sacrificed a lot,” he shared after the assembly.

“We should never forget we’re from a great country.”

The Bowmore school community has an especially strong connection to Remembrance Day, said organizer Stephen Ross.

“There are lots of local connections to Remembrance Day and military service here at Bowmore,” said Ross, a Grade 7/8 teacher, pointing to his colleague, Mary Anne Cain,

who served in the Navy.

“I think it’s very important to remember especially with the (Second World War) veterans getting older. There’s so few of them left.”

Last year, Bowmore had a display in its front hallway featuring photographs and stories about family members and loved one of Bowmore students and staff members who served and continue to serve.

This year, the school presented slideshows with pictures of family and friends of staff members and students who served and are serving Canada, along with poems, songs and a moment of silence.

Large poppies inscribed with the names of the 158 Canadians who have given their lives serving in Afghanistan also decorated the walls of the school’s gym.

Nisbet Lodge hosts Christmas Bazaar Nisbet Lodge - McClintock Manor is hosting its second annual Christmas Bazaar and currently accepting donations and vendor applications.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the foundation’s campaign, “The Caring Continues Year 3.” Vendors will showcase their uniquely crafted items, like jewellery, knitted goods, crocheted items, Christmas ornaments, antique linens, preserves, desserts and more. Nisbet Lodge was founded by Calvary Church, Toronto and opened in 1973. Over the years, the retirement home evolved into a long-term care home. McClintock Manor opened next door in 1993 and is a seniors’ apartment building with a mix of market and rent geared income units. It was built as a continuum of care model where seniors can move in while still active, access home support services as needed and eventually move

to the Lodge if their care needs increase.

The Nisbet Lodge - McClintock Foundation was started in 1993 to support the ongoing work of providing housing and care. Over the years, it has supported many capital projects like a nurse call system, craft room, lounge upgrades and more. The proceeds from the bazaar will support new resident room curtains and a new computer centre.

Public space under Gardiner gets boost New public spaces are promised for underneath the Gardiner Expressway thanks to a philanthropic donation to the city of $25 million.

Project: Under Gardiner will establish a 10-acre public space and nearly two kilometres of multi-use trails on reclaimed lands under the Gardiner between Strachan Avenue and Spadina Avenue.

Toronto architect Ken Greenberg will design the space, which will be built by Waterfront Toronto.

An official name for the project will be decided via a contest beginning in December.

DAVENPORT OVERPASS STUDYto start in 2016 Metrolinx has confirmed it will launch formal study of its Davenport Overpass proposal in mid-January.

The provincial transit planning agency announced it was pushing back the study to accommodate the city’s planning department, which

Metrolinx wants to build the overpass for GO Transit rail service that currently intersects with CP Rail freight traffic at the Davenport Diamond crossing creating delays for riders.

FEW DETAILS ON PERMANENT HOT LANES The Ontario government is promising to provide an update on wider implementation of High Occupancy Toll or HOT lanes by the end of the year, but until then is staying mum on its plans.

Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca asked for patience until the details are finalized, which he prom-

ised will be made known in a matter of weeks. The lanes are supposed to be installed on 400-series highways.

What is known is no regular lanes will be removed, and existing HOV carpool lanes will become tolling lanes for single occupancy vehicles. But there’s still no indication of locations, dates for implementation or how much the HOT lane will cost.

Toronto’s share of tax is $170 million wgas

Toronto will get nearly $170 million from this year’s allocation of provincial gas tax revenues.

The province reserves two cents from every litre of gas taxed and hands the proceeds to municipalities for transit.

Toronto gets $8 million more this year compared to 2014’s allocations and just over half of the available funding of $332 million.

Amicus Productions opened its season with a wild and unique production of the well-known story of Robin Hood.

However, this adaptation

by Don Nigro is not the story you may remember. In this version, our hero Robin Hood (Adam Brooks) avoids violence at any cost. He is environmentally conscious and feels peace is the only way to accomplish anything.

He accidentally killed his father years before, and this single act shaped his life.

The show opens in Sherwood Forest, where we meet Maid Marion (Celeste Van Vroenhoven) her lady-in-waiting, Quigley (Riley Nelson), the Sheriff (Liam Doherty), and a few of his men. They are escorting Marion to Prince John (Stephen Flett) whom she is

to marry.

In contrast to a traditional Marion, this one is a spoiled, rich girl who believes all noblemen are kind and fair.

Also different is the Sheriff and his men, who are cowards, afraid of Robin Hood and his men.

After a strange skirmish, they do attack, and take Marion and Quigley, but Marion is in for a surprise.

Robin Hood and his men, Will Scarlett (Ryan Abedi), Friar Tuck (Tom O’Neill), and Little John (Francis Melling), are not bandits, but only want to show Marion the rich are thriving while the poor are barely surviving.

And so begins Robin Hood’s quest to teach her what’s going on in the “real world”.

He cuts up her gowns and takes her to see peasants living amongst the pigs.

With a new outlook,

Marion is determined to make things right at home.

Meanwhile, there are some bizarre things happening at the castle where Prince John, his mistress, Bronwen (Melissa Verwey) and his mother, Queen Eleanor (Paulette St. Amour), are awaiting Marion’s arrival.

Robin and Marion also start to fall in love, but can they inspire change? Will the noblemen change their ways? The answers are open for interpretation.

This show is similar to an abstract painting: you may like some parts, and question others. It has supernatural, farce, and socially conscious themes, so it truly is a smorgasbord.

Legal aid clinics help the working poor Legal aid clinics east of Yonge Street in Toronto will be helping the working poor get the help the need when it comes to employment law.

Even after changes meant to protect temporary, parttime or low-waged employees, many complain they aren’t paid properly or were wrongfully fired.

Toronto’s community legal clinics, serving people with

low incomes, find it hard to keep up. Some provide limited advice or none at all when it comes to employment law.

But through the Toronto East End Employment Law Project, six clinics are cooperating to change this, said paralegal Regini David.

The project asks lowincome people with workrelated problems to call
