RIDING IN STYLE Riverdale Hub reacts to defacing of public mural

Santa Claus comes to town It’s the most wonderful time of the year in the city’s east end as thousands of revelers are getting ready to line Kingston Road in the Upper Beach this Sunday for the seventh annual Hamper’s Santa Claus Parade. This year’s Jingle Bells-themed parade, which will last about a hour, will get underway at 1 p.m. Several marching bands, colourful floats, costumed characters as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus and Community Centre 55’s (CC55) mascot, Hamper the Reindeer, are all expected to make an appearance. The parade will run along Kingston Road from Victoria Park Avenue to Walter Street and back to CC55 at 97 Main St. at Swanwick Avenue. “It’s going to be very exciting and it looks like the weather is also going to hold out. Everyone is really looking forward to the Santa Claus parade,” said Nancy Culver, the local agency’s special events and volunteer coordinator, during a recent interview. During the parade, Community Centre 55 and the Kingston Road Business Community (the parade’s organizers) will be collecting letters to Santa as well as toonies for the community centre’s 31st annual Share-AChristmas program, which provides less fortunate families and individuals with food and gift hampers during Christmas. All are welcome to stop by CC55 for a post-parade celebration, which will include hot dogs, hot cocoa, coffee and popcorn, crafts for the kids and a special visit with Santa. The event also serves as the launch or the food drive, toy collection and volunteer recruitment effort for the Share-AChristmas program. “We’re so lucky to live in a community that supports the centre and our events on such a large scale. We’re also lucky to have the support of a number of local agencies,” Culver said. Area residents are reminded that parking along the parade route is prohibited. For more information, call 416-6911113.

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It’s an unfortunate situation, but one that can’t easily be rectified. That’s the point of view the Riverdale Hub, the Little India-area non-profit organization behind the block-long GerrardART Project, has decided to take in light of the recent defacing of a portion of its public art mural. “These (kinds of) things happen in many communities,” said Nuzhath Leedham on Tuesday. The executive director of the Riverdale Hub and its sister organization, the Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre (RIWC), pointed to disagreements and/or misunderstandings between local stakeholders. “The community is still behind this project. We have so much support.” Further, she underlined the mandate of the Riverdale Hub and the RIWC is to bring people together, not divide the community in any way. Sometime late Sunday, Oct. 28 or in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 29, a significant portion of a large-scale mural at 1330 Gerrard St. E. was defaced with white paint. This act of vandalism led the Riverdale Hub to postpone its Friday, Nov. 9 media event as well as the project’s unveiling celebrations, which were set to take place the weekend of Nov. 10 and 11 during the community’s Diwali Fair. “We needed the time to digest the situation and didn’t want to react right away,” Leedham said, adding their goal is to repaint the mural as soon as possible and move forward. “There is a bit of tension between the neighbours on the block. We want some resolution, for sure.” She said they’d also like to find out who is responsible for the vandalism. Leedham said the various designs for the project’s murals were prominently displayed >>>steering, page 8

East Toronto resident observed Ukraine election JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Lifelong east Toronto resident Chris Yaccato’s passion for politics, world events and culture has recently taken him to Ukraine. Yaccato, who by day works as the executive assistant to Brant, Ont., MPP and Speaker of the House Dave Levac, voluntarily travelled to the east European country late last month to serve as an independent observer for that country’s Oct. 28 parliamentary elections. “It was a very different world, a real eye-opening experience. It’s definitely a different set of rules (there) but there are a lot of similarities,” said Yaccato, adding that like in Canada, residents expressed concerns about rising taxes, job security and caring for their families. “I didn’t know what to expect. It was very humbling to know our two countries are very similar and we can definitely learn from one another.” He said the most notable difference he saw was the economic disparity in Ukraine’s suburban areas. Yaccato, who unsuccessfully ran for Ward 32 Councillor in 2003 and has worked on a number of election campaigns over the years, was part of a team of 430 short- and longterm observers from across Canada sent over to Ukraine by CANADEM – Canada’s Civilian Reserve, a nonprofit agency dedicated to advancing international peace and security. The organization maintains a roster of more than 15,000 experienced Canadian and international experts in various fields and from all walks of life. “(Going to Ukraine as an election observer) was a natural fit for me and I’m certainly honoured to have been chosen,” said Yaccato, who

lives near Main Street and Danforth Avenue. “It was a great way to understand the Ukrainian people, culture and lifestyle.” Initially, he said he’d hoped to serve as an observer for Ukraine’s presidential election in January 2010, but applied late and wasn’t accepted. The active east-end volunteer/ community leader reapplied this summer and was invited in September to take part in the Oct. 28 parliamentary elections. “This time I wanted to make sure I went,” said Yaccato, whose interest and connection with Ukraine began some time ago when he was involved in drafting legislation to establish Holodomor Memorial Day in Ontario. Holodomor is the name given to the genocide by famine that occurred in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933.

An estimated 10 million Ukrainians, up to 25,000 daily at its peak, died as a result of the manmade famine under Joseph Stalin’s regime. This year’s Holodomor Memorial Day is Saturday. Yaccato’s journey to the former Eastern Block nation began on Oct. 18 when he travelled to Ottawa for briefings. His CANADEM team left Canada the following day, arriving in Ukraine’s capital city of Kiev Saturday, Oct. 20. Two more days of briefings/training followed. In the evenings, Yaccato visited a few tourist spots such as Freedom Square, the site of Ukraine’s Orange Revolution. The Orange Revolution took place from late November 2004 to January 2005 when the Ukrainians protested an election with civil disobedience, sit-ins and general strikes. The protest resulted in a new election being

called with a “free and fair” vote taking place in December 2004. The new government was sworn in in January 2005. He also passed by the federal parliament buildings. Yaccato was then part of a smaller group of about 15 people deployed to the southeastern city of Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine’s fourth largest municipality. As an election observer, his role was to visit various polling stations in his designated region and work to determine if there were any abnormalities in the election process. “We were to report on any observances of voter intimidation, if they didn’t receive ballots or if things seemed out of place,” Yaccato explained. “We weren’t there to intervene or assist, but to report.” That data was then analyzed and complied into a report, he said, adding from his experience everything went smoothly and overall the election process was well organized. Sunday, Oct. 28 was an especially long day for Yaccato who was up before dawn and didn’t get to bed until the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 29 as his role was also to observe the ballot count and closing procedures. The region where Yaccato was working has 82 Precinct Election Commissions (PEC), each of which was required to report their results to the district electoral commission on a first come, first serve basis. Yaccato’s PEC didn’t have the chance to report its results until 12:30 p.m. the following day. “That was a long night. We were pretty delirious, but I’d do it again. It was definitely worth it,” he laughed. “If Canada sends a mission to Ukraine’s 2015 presidential elections, I’d love to apply.”

Lady Saint celebrates scholarship, former teammates head to OFSAA National junior hoops team member Samantha Hill returned to Eastern Commerce Collegiate on Tuesday and, no doubt, the school team wished it could have been for more than just a short visit to mark an important milestone. Not that the powerhouse hoops program hasn’t rallied together in the absence of their star player who graduated in the spring. At the city level, they just completed a perfect season last week, winning their third straight Toronto District School Board (TDSB) championship with a 44-30 win over Northern Secondary. But that hasn’t earned them a lot of respect at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial 4A girls championship, which runs today to

Saturday. They’re ranked 10th out of the 16 teams, just ahead of Northern at 11th. Pope John Paul from Scarborough is ranked ninth.

Hill, meanwhile, was at the school, where she was a four-time honour student and athlete of the year, for the official signing of a full U.S. college athletic scholarship to Virginia

Tech University this fall. On the hardcourt, she helped the Lady Saints to OFSAA appearances in three of her four years – winning gold in 4A in her Grade 9 year (in 2008). A multi-sport athlete she was also good enough to compete for Eastern Commerce at OFSAA in both cross country and track and field. Her final athletic accomplishment for the school just before she graduated this spring was a fourthplace finish at OFSAA in the 800m race, just missing out on a podium appearance. Over the summer, Hill was a member of Canada’s U18 national basketball team that qualified for the 2013 U19 World Championships in Lithuania. ~ Norm Nelson

Health centre talks City Design Should Move US! NEWS BITES The South Riverdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) and The Diabetes Education Community Network of East Toronto (DECNET) are hosting a Diabetes Month event called Diabetes in the Real World: City Design Should Move US! Framed as a panel discussion, organizers hope the event will spark a dialogue among the community, clients and their families as well as a critical examination of how our environment affects our health. Diabetes in the Real World: City Design Should Move US! will take place tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the SRCHC, 955 Queen St. E. The evening’s speakers include Paul Hess of the University of Toronto and Marisa Creatore of the Centre for Research on Inner City Health at St. Michael’s Hospital as well as Jennifer Keesmaat, chief planner for the City of Toronto, Dr. Gillian Booth, an endocrinologist and a scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital’s Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and Nancy Lea Smith, director of the Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation. “Our aim for the community panel event includes raising awareness about how the built environment impacts physical activity choices by influencing walkability, transit choices and recreational activities,” said Hilary Hall, a registered nurse with DECNET, in a release. For details, call Fiona Husband at 416-461-9043, ext. 377.

Re-connect during Grey Cup festivities

T

his Sunday’s Grey Cup is more than just an opportunity to experience an annual celebration of a storied Canadian tradition. For Torontonians, this city is on display as the rest of the country watches. Being the 100th game, it’s a milestone event and we should be proud to be hosts. But the football game is also an opportunity for us to re-connect with and celebrate the city’s rich history in the sport. The first Grey Cup game was played at Toronto’s Rosedale Field Dec. 4, 1909. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Parkdale Canoe Club 26-6. Of the 100 Grey Cup games, Toronto’s hosted nearly half of them at places such as Varsity Stadium, Exhibition Stadium and now the Rogers Centre. In addition to the Varsity and Parkdale teams – as well as the Argonauts – Toronto also once had a Balmy Beach team competing. Players such as Ted Reeve (a former Argonaut and Balmy Beach player) are enshrined in the city’s sporting history. Reeve’s name our view now adorns an arena at Main Street and Gerrard Street East. Celebrate our Much has changed as Canadian football has evolved. history this While interest in the Argonauts may have waxed and waned in weekend recent years, the city’s connection to football remains strong. There’s a number of Toronto youth teams in the Central Ontario Minor Football League. Several high schools offer playing opportunities at different levels of competition and two universities, York and U of T, have varsity teams. A number of players on both of Sunday’s championship finalists, the Calgary Stampeders and the Argonauts, also have connections to the city. The great thing is, there are ways to celebrate and re-connect with the sport even if you don’t have tickets to the game. There are plenty of ancillary events taking place in the city. Also, treat this game as an opportunity to reach out to friends with whom you’ve had a connection through the sport. Perhaps you went to games together or watched them on television or played together in high school. When people get together, events like these can unite citizens and neighbourhoods. Friendships can be rekindled. New relationships can be forged. By hosting the milestone event, Toronto and its historic connection to Canadian football is being recognized. We should take this opportunity to renew and refresh the friendships that developed through our own connections to the sport. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. I am 10 years old and in Grade 5. I love to participate in extra-curricular activities in my school, and this teachers’ conflict is hitting kids like a ton of bricks. Teachers didn’t ask us what we wanted. Did they think this wouldn’t affect us? All kids in schools are affected by this horrible mess. It’s a disgrace to children and parents. Is there even an end to all of this? Does this mean that the extracurricular activities will never be reinstated ever or just for the year? Our education doesn’t only occur in the classrooms. It takes place on the playing fields, in the gymnasiums, on the diamonds and in so many other locations that extra-curricular activities takes students. In closing, we need teachers back. It’s not their needs, it’s ours. How it gets done is up to the province and the unions. We learn to get along in the classrooms, and the province and teachers should too. Kayla Herrington

Colle on executive committee a good move by mayor There have been a lot of dumb moves by the Mayor Rob Ford administration over the past year. But last Friday, the right-wing mayor and his so-very conservative team made a smart move, as they invited Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Josh Colle to sit on their executive committee. Colle is a first-term councillor, and one of the more prominent voices – some would call him the de facto leader – of council’s so-called “mushy middle.” Now that is a deceptively unkind term to describe a group of councillors who essentially bring the kind of pragmatism that one would hope comes to nuts-andbolts municipal government, keeping their place on the political spectrum generally to themselves. More than the hated left,

THE CITY

david nickle

this group has been the real bane of Ford’s existence on the floor of council. They have proven themselves anything but mushy, as they rejected the mayor’s budget, derailed his plans to build a subway instead of light rail lines, replaced his TTC board of directors and approved a plastic bag ban for January. The mayor and his team have so far responded with glares and threats of electoral retribution. But as 2013 approaches, that strategy is proving ever-more hollow, particularly as the mayor’s personal troubles

stack up. Bringing Colle onto the executive committee could signal an intelligent shift. Colle has made it clear he’s going to vote independently, whether he’s sitting on the mayor’s team or not. That doesn’t seem to have dissuaded anyone in extending the invitation. And it shouldn’t. Colle has proven himself to be a leader among the middle. It was his amendment to the budget this year that reversed cuts championed by the mayor and the budget chief. He’s often at or near the middle of the compromises that pull that middle vote one way or another. And over the next two years, the Ford administration has to have some wins. If 2012 was a lesson in anything, it was humility: that however great a man-

date Ford received in 2010 when he was elected, he can’t count on that alone to bring about consensus on council. If he wants to succeed, he’ll have to follow the example of other mayors and seek consensus. Ford has begun to do this in recent meetings – notably, backing off his dream of selling off 700 detached homes owned by the Toronto Community Housing Corporation in favour of a small sell-off and big renewal. With Colle onside, he will have a means to determine how to make those compromises earlier and more strategically. It could mean a balanced budget that passes with the consent of council. It could, if he plays it right, mean a rebirth for the Ford mayoralty.

BIAs celebrated for contributions Several east Toronto business improvement areas (BIA) were recognized for the contributions to the communities they serve as well as the city as a whole during last week’s second annual TABIA Awards Event. The umbrella organization representing the city’s 28 BIAs, the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas, held its annual awards night Nov. 13. “We hope that the City of Toronto takes note of all that the over 30,000 small businesses contribute to their individual neighbourhoods, through their own self-imposed levies,” said John Kiru, TABIA’s executive director in a Nov. 13 release. Locally, the GreekTown on the Danforth BIA was recognized with a fellowship award. On Oct. 11, the BIA, in partnership with the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, welcomed the Marathon Flame to Alexander the Great Parkette. Over the next year, the plan is to install a permanent flame structure in the parkette so

‘We hope that the City of Toronto takes note of all that the over 30,000 small businesses contribute to their individual neighbourhoods...’ John Kiru, TABIA’s executive director every time the torch leaves Greece, it would travel to GreekTown. The Gerrard India Bazaar BIA received a festival award for its Festival of South Asia, now considered one of Toronto’s premier street festivals. The diverse event gives attendees a window into all things South Asian. The Little India-area BIA was further commended for its commitment to producing the festival despite often frustrating and expensive hurdles. The Danforth BIA was recognized with a marketing award for its media campaign in support of the Thrill of the Grill event, which welcomed foodie to The Danforth to watch a team of celebrity judges determine “Who Has the Best Rack?”. The Beach BIA also received

a small budget, big impact award for the various initiatives its marketing committee came up with to not only promote the BIA, but also engage its members to have more positive interaction with the board. The BIA’s most notable initiative recognized is its tote bag, which were sold to members at a cheaper price than they were to make. Lastly, the Riverside District BIA was honoured with an outstanding streetscape improvement award for its tree pit covers. TABIA’s executive team selected the award winners. Toronto Community News, which publishes The Beach and East York Mirror newspapers, alongside the city’s Economic Development and Culture and Tourism Toronto sponsored the annual event.

Steering committee to meet with stakeholders, councillor >>>from page 1 in the front windows of the Riverdale Hub since September and that they were not made aware of any major concerns with what was envisioned for the mural’s eastern side at Highfield Road. “We felt blindsided by the objection to the design,” she said, referring to the reaction after the mural had been painted. The steering committee for the City of Torontofunded project met Monday afternoon to discuss the next steps. Its first move is to request a meeting between all involved and Councillor Paula Fletcher, who has asked city staff to do a complete investigation of all parties involved and to explore what verbal or written permissions were given for the public art project. “As I understand it, there was a signoff for the mural, but I’m now waiting to have that corroborated. I’ve asked

city staff to peel back the layers,” she said last week, expressing her disappointment a piece of the colourful project was painted over. “It’s quite confusing, very complicated and terr i b l y u n f o r t u n a t e. I ’m hoping at the end of the day cooler heads will prevail all around.” Remove Mural ASAP In a recent email to The Beach Mirror, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, president of Dinco Holdings Inc., the company that manages 1330 Gerrard St. E., indicated the plan is to “remove the mural entirely as soon as possible.” “Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Enterprise and/ or Ms. Nuzhath (Leedham, executive director of The Riverdale Hub and the Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre) has never approached us with (a) formal proposal for our

approval. The owner of the building has informed the City of Toronto about his plan to restore the defaced walls,” he wrote Nov. 13. “The owner of the building has spoken with the manager of Toronto Transportation Services regarding the matter. He has elaborated the letter of permission, adding details to the idea and clarifying the meaning of the letter and its discourse. The letter of permission was intended to show general support to City of Toronto’s plans.” Moshiur Rahman, the building’s owner, who is in Bangladesh, did not respond to a request for comment by Mirror press time. A May 2012 memo provided to The Beach Mirror by the Riverdale Hub indicated Rahman’s “full permission” to use his property for the StreetART Toronto grant. Fifty-five Division police have looked into the situation, but are not commenting further on it.

Fundraiser for Metropolitan church a success Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto’s sixth annual Bridges to Hope and Freedom Awards fundraiser was a resounding success, raising $91,000 for the Riverdale-area church’s outreach programs.

Funds raised at this year’s event, held Sunday, Oct. 21 at Arcadian Court, exceeded organizers’ fundraising goals. The event honoured community leaders Mark Bonham, Beverley Wybrow and Rev. Dr.

Brent Hawkes, while Margaret McCain, former MP Bill Graham, and Trinity-Spadina MP Olivia Chow served as the day’s featured speakers. Music was performed by the MCC Toronto’s choir alongside special guests.

Rotary fundraising auction this weekend RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com David Pyette wants bargain hunting shoppers planning to head across the border for Black Friday sales to consider the deals up for grabs at this weekend’s Metro Toronto Rotary Auction, which will be based out of the East York Civic Centre. More than 900 items are scheduled for bidding for this weekend’s auction, which

will be telecast live on Rogers TV Nov. 23 to 24. Pyette said the discounts on everything from sports tickets to appliances will far outweigh those that can be found across the border. “There’s no reason for Toronto shoppers to shuffle off to Buffalo this year to take advantage of sales because we will beat them right here at this auction,” said Pyette. Proceeds from the past

Me t ro To ro n t o Ro t a r y Auctions have gone towards local charitable groups including the East York Children’s Breakfast Club, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest and many others. The auction will be aired live on Friday evening until midnight and all day and night Saturday. For more information visit www.rotaryclubauction.com or call the auction’s info line at 416-508-8382.

Mobile and online users can now travel through ‘Toronto in Time’ using a free mobile app for iOS (Apple) and Android. The app highlights the history of Toronto through “then and now” photos, slideshows, trails and historical stories for more than 150 sites. Through Toronto in Time, one can discover the story of the Toronto club that hosted the Rolling Stones, U2 and Marilyn Monroe; learn where soldiers of the War of 1812 lie buried; stand on the site of a 17th-century First Nations village and much more.

Users can also meet a cast of characters that includes the inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, bank robbers, visionaries and dreamers who have enriched Toronto’s history. Geolocation data “(Toronto in Time) brings history alive and enables users to compare the place where they are standing with what it looked like decades ago,” said Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson in a statement. Users of the app can access geolocation data to find the

sites of stories closest to them marked on an easy-to-read map, filter stories by theme or neighbourhood, or follow curated walking trails. Each story includes a photo gallery or a unique then-and-now photo feature that shows the present site dissolving into its past. Users without a mobile device can also discover all the features of Toronto in Time online at http://citiesintime.ca/toronto/ An online demonstration of how to use the mobile application can be viewed at https:// vimeo.com/51236694.

Names of murder-suicide victims released

Police have now confirmed an elderly couple, who lived on a quiet street near Gerrard Street East and Coxwell Avenue for more than three decades, died earlier this week as a result of a murder-suicide. Emergency crews received a 9 call for assistance at 12:31 p.m. Nov. 14. Once on scene, they located an elderly couple without vital signs inside a semi-detached home on Ladykirk Avenue. The female victim, identified as 70-year-old Leonilde Cabra, was found dead in the residence. The retired homemaker was suffering from obvious signs of trauma. The male, Armando Cabral, 74, was located with life-threatening injuries. Cabral, a retired roofer, was transported to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries Nov. 15. Officers from the Homicide Squad have classified this incident

as a murder-suicide and are not seeking other suspects Investigators aren’t reporting any history of domestic violence or incidents with either of the deceased, who have four adult children. Police have confirmed through

the victims’ family that Armando Cabral recently suffered and sought treatment for mental illness. Authorities aren’t releasing any more details about this case. - Joanna Lavoie with files from Torstar News Service

Pedestrian safety campaign results in 278 fines Step Up and Be Safe, a city-wide pedestrian safety campaign, has resulted in a total of 278 tickets issued in 55 Division. During that seven-day period, police ticketed both pedestrians and

motorists for a range of pedestrian safety-related offences. The initiative, which aims to curb the number of fatal collisions in Toronto, took place from Nov. 5 to 11.

The fall tends to be a particularly deadly time for pedestrians, especially the elderly. Toronto police are reminding people to drive carefully and share the road.

Police looking for man who exposed himself on Queen Street East A public safety alert has been issued by police after a man was spotted twice in front of a business window near Queen Street East and Winners Circle committing an indecent act. The man was seen Friday, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 14, also at 9 p.m., exposing himself while using a flashlight to illuminate himself. He was last seen fleeing toward a Green P parking lot south of Queen Street East.

The man, who is described as a white male, 5’11”, and 210 pounds with brown hair, is believed to have left the area in a vehicle. He was last seen wearing a plaid multi-coloured shirt, a dark blue jacket and light blue jeans. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-5500, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).

Woman charged after thefts at LCBOs A woman faces 10 charges following a series of thefts at LCBO stores. Police allege a woman drove a number of people to LCBO stores. One suspect would cause a distraction in the stores while the others stole liquor. “During the thefts, a vehicle licence plate and car description were obtained,” police alleged in a news release. A woman was arrested after officers from the 55 Division major crime unit spotted the vehicle in the Pharmacy and Danforth avenues area.

On Nov. 13, police executed a search warrant at a home near Pharmacy and Eglinton avenues and seized 650 grams of hashish, 2,250 grams of marijuana and two Tasers. Also seized were switchblades, Oxycodone and Percocet. Susan MacAulay, 46, has been charged with possessing property obtained by crime, possessing marijuana, possessing hashish, possessing a controlled substance, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, three counts of theft and two counts of unauthorized possession of a prohibited device.
