JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The Riverside Business Improvement Area (BIA) has received two Ontario IgniteTO grants totaling $20,000. The funds, announced by Toronto-Danforth MPP Peter Tabuns and Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher at the BIA’s annual general meeting Sept. 30, will be used to help pay for two upcoming events: the Oct. 25 Riverside WalkFEST and the June 2015 Riverside Eats & Beats StreetFEST. The funds will allow organizers to significantly expand outreach and programming. Both events tie in to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. “Riverside is ready to host the world in 2015,” said Mitch Korman, chair of the Riverside BIA, which was recently awarded Ignite 2015 Community Partner Status and has been operating as a community partner with the PanAm/Parapan Am Games >>>bia, page 2

Riverside resident Yusuke Akai, who came to Canada from Tokyo 18 years ago and has called the Queen-Broadview area home for the last eight, is taking part in the show. Akai, who, with his wife Naomi, started Aka Ceramic Studio in September 2012, creates functional ceramic pieces such as plates, mugs, vases and bowls in his spare time in his tiny home studio. “My style is very simple. I try to make simple shapes beautiful,” said Akai, who also hand crafts the dyes he uses to add colour to his pieces. Akai first started making ceramics when he was just 13 years old. “I saw ceramics on TV and I wanted to try it,” said Akai, who managed to save up enough money to purchase a small kiln when he was still in high school.
