After a year of work, a life-sized bronze statue and bench in honour of Jeffrey Baldwin who starved to death Nov. 20, 2002 while in the care of his grandparents, is set to be officially unveiled in Greenwood Park, 150 Greenwood Ave., Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Crafted by Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernathy, the monument features a likeness of the little boy wearing a Superman costume. It also includes a bench, which will be engraved along the top rail with a poem chosen by one of Jeffrey’s sisters. The bench is inscribed with about 200 signatures and messages for Jeffrey from people who contributed to the project.

Ottawa resident Todd Boyce created a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise $25,000 to commission a permanent memorial, which was also made possible with the support of Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher and members of the Friends of Greenwood Park stewardship group. Extra funds raised will be used to establish a bursary in Jeffrey’s honour for a student who has overcome difficult circumstances.

The knitting group at Beach United Church (BUC), 140 Wineva Ave., is set to hold its first session of the new season Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Throughout the winter, knitters of all levels gather each month to knit kids’ vests and blankets for less fortunate children and mothers abroad.

Once a year, the knitted items are displayed and blessed at BUC before being donated to Canadian Food for Children. During the October knitting session, Erica Bondi, a founding member of the knitting group, will be remembered. Bondi died suddenly earlier this month. Her family will be in attendance. A second all-candidates’ debate is set

Maintaining Ward 32’s unique character despite development JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Ward 32 is home to several highly desirable neighbourhoods including The Beach, Upper Beach, Beach Hill and the Beach Triangle.

With that desirability comes a number of local struggles including the challenge of maintaining the area’s unique character while striving for appropriate new development.

The Mirror recently invited all of those running for city councillor in Ward 32 to sound off on their key issues.

Sandra Bussin, a four-term councillor who lost to MaryMargaret McMahon in the 2010 municipal election, cited development and transit as her top priorities.

“Do we want to keep our unique village character or see the cookie-cutter condo development that is mushrooming across parts of the city reflected here?” Bussin wrote in an email to The Mirror.

“During this council term, new development applications are negatively reshaping our community. The hard work of residents to develop design guidelines for Queen Street East did not curb the impact of the major development proposal at the corner of Queen and Woodbine, because the local councillor failed to request from city council an Official Plan amendment to include the citizen design guidelines.”

Sh e a l s o p o i n t e d t o McMahon’s failure to make a motion to city council for heritage designation of the landmark, Fire Hall 227 Clock Tower.

“As the result of these regrettable omissions, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) – which noted in its decision that council took no action on these important issues – has allowed this

large condominium development to obscure views of this unique Queen Street East landmark and dismissed the new guidelines as having no force or effect!” charged Bussin, who also made mention of a development application at 1333-1339 Queen St. E. where “beautiful heritage duplexes are subject to the wreckers’ ball for a large condo development proposal.”

She said a revamp of Toronto’s Official Plan is urgently needed to protect our neighbourhoods and maintain the unique character of Ward 32.

Bussin pointed to the hardwon battle spearheaded by residents against a condo development at Neville Park and the precedent it would have set if it went ahead as the developer wanted it to.

“Let’s stop playing games about the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB),” she said, adding city council should also exercise its right to enact its own appeal body to replace the OMB. Bussin also mentioned transit expansion as the best way to solve gridlock in our community and across the city noting the fully funded Transit City comprehensive transit plan for Scarborough, and transit lines along Finch and Sheppard that were all cancelled by this council.

She also said it makes no sense to waste the $100 million spent on the Environmental Assessment, design work and contracts awarded for Transit City.

Candidate Michael Connor said Ward 32 needs to maintain its unique character while working with the city to improve life for its residents.

“It is important that the Beaches has a voice at city hall that is aware of the issues of both its residents and the visitors that help to keep it

vibrant,” he wrote in an email.

“So much of our ward has been neglected for too many decades. I have many new ideas for our ward, one of the many main issues the ward now faces are problems due to new development and much neglected infrastructure.”

Connor also mentioned the lack of parking as well as the impact of constant construction as key issues.

To address this i s s u e , h e’s proposing erecting multilevel parking behind the Alliance Cinemas at Kingston Road and Queen Street as well as permitting local schools to rent out parking spaces to area residents in off times.

“It could remove some of the parking issues being faced by them as they try to cope with the deluge of visitors to the area as well as generate new revenue to our underfunded school system,” Connor said, adding he’d also propose a ‘Plug and Park’ for electric vehicles in Green P lots.

Further, Connor also said

he’d work with city planning committees to try to schedule construction so that all the work is being done at one time.

McMahon, who is running for a second term, also cited planning and development as the top issues facing Ward 32.

“We want to ensure that development in our community is appropriate,” she wrote in an email to The Mirror. “ We c a n achieve this by moving from a developer-led system to a citizen-led planning system. To make this shift, we must increase citizen involvement, reform our planning system, and plan ahead.”

McMahon said increasing citizen involvement in planning requires a transparent and resident-focused consultation process and the current system leaves many residents feeling their voices were not heard.

She added consultations regarding development must have independent facilitators that understand planning and

can help lead meaningful discussions and that the number of consultations surrounding development should also be upped “so that everyone is guaranteed a chance to voice their opinion.”

McMahon said one way to reform the planning system is removing Toronto from the jurisdiction of the OMB. “I am proud that I have voted three times to do just this and I will continue to fight to remove Toronto from this body,” she said. “Time and again, local decisions by Toronto residents and councillors have been overturned by the provincially-appointed OMB. This must end.”

McMahon also said planning ahead is “essential to building the city we want.”

“We need local planning rules that govern our main streets so that development must adhere to specific regulations. Each area of our community is different and requires specific guidelines to dictate what is appropriate,” she said.

The incumbent councillor said she’s been working toward these goals, noting when developers became interested in Queen Street East in the Beach, she worked to create a process that planned ahead for main street and put the views of residents at its centre.

“The Beach Urban Design Guidelines are now part of Toronto’s Official Plan, the strongest legal weight that can be awarded,” McMahon said of the system, which she said five other councillors have “copied”.

“Fu r t h e r m o re, s i n c e The Beach Urban Design Guidelines were enacted, No applications for developments exceeding those guidelines have been submitted. Working together to manage development can and must happen in Ward 32, and across Toronto.”

Candidate James Sears said his top issue is ensuring the wellbeing of seniors, notably those “who must choose between paying utilities, rent, and property tax or eating.”

In an email to The Mirror, he said since announcing his candidacy, he’s received dozens of emails and calls from distressed seniors seeking his help.

“It saddens me when a senior tells me he or she has lost all hope and is now considering suicide,” said Sears, a retired Canadian Armed Forces Medical Officer, who shared the story of a 74-yearold Canadian Armed Forces veteran senior who lives in a TCHC residence.

Along with his Shih Tzu “Mountain Bear”, “who is running for office with me”, Sears visited the man and said he was appalled at the “third world conditions” he was living in including “massive” chunks of lead-based paint peeling off the walls, toxic mold covering the “entire” bathroom ceiling, inoperative power receptacles and the man’s treasured possessions in garbage bags due to a bedbug infestation.

Sears is proposing three steps to address these issues starting with a monthly cash supplement for every senior earning less than $20,000 a year.

He’s proposing taxing nonprofit property owners, an “adopt-a-senior” program and is calling for the community to come together and organzia a “seniors pride parade”.

Lessons learned from Hurricane Hazel

ixty years ago today, Toronto woke up to a scene of horror. On the night of Oct. 15, accumulated heavy rains associated with Hurricane Hazel led to flooding that killed 81 people.

On Raymore Drive along the Humber River, 32 houses were washed away and 30 people were killed.

Five volunteer firefighters died when their truck was swept away as they tried to help a stranded motorist caught in the Humber’s flood waters.

Along with the Humber, the Don and Rouge rivers and Highland Creek flooded their banks with enormous amounts of fast-moving water. By the time it was over, some 4,000 families across southern Ontario and more than 1,800 in Toronto had been left homeless.

While 1954 may seem a long time ago to many, the impacts of Hurricane Hazel and how it changed land usage and development in Toronto are felt to this day. The firemen were all there and had ropes and were making a human chain to reach the stranded people.

I will never forget their cries for help as long as I live.”

Madeline McDowell, who is now vice-chair of the Humber Watershed Alliance, was 13 when Hurricane Hazel struck. She said at the time many didn’t realize how deadly the storm had been until the next day.

Coming on the heels of days of heavy rains in southern Ontario, Hurricane Hazel resulted in some 20 billion gallons of water rushing down the Humber, washing away everything in its path – bridges, houses, vehicles and people.

After the hurricane, a conservation authority, now known as Toronto Region Conservation Authority, was formed to improve flood control measures and regulate development on flood plains.

A hard lesson was learned by the death and destruction of Hurricane Hazel, but our city is now much better prepared for natural disasters.

To those considering voting early: Think about it

W

ith advance polls open this week, it is tempting for those with strong opinions about the future occupant of the Toronto mayor’s office to put on their voting pants and cast ballot now rather than Oct. 27.

Certainly by this point, anyone paying even a bit of attention has heard enough from the Top 3 mayoral candidates to make a choice.

As long as one doesn’t hold with the idea of strategic voting – which is to say, watching the polls up to Election Day and deciding where their vote best goes to, ahem, defeat a particular candidate – then there’s no reason to wait.

If only it were as simple as that: that the future of the city rests solely, or even largely, on the shoulders of one mayor.

It doesn’t, of course.

There are 45 pairs of shoulders including the mayor, and while the mayor has

david nickle the city enough influence to carry most votes, the buck ultimately stops with 44 city councillors who can support or thwart an agenda as they see fit.

Local candidates And while mileage may vary, it’s a fair guess that most voters haven’t had nearly as close a look at their local ward candidates as they have at the ChowFord-Tory trifecta.

With the high-octane drama in the mayor’s office this past term, it’s also more of a challenge to assess the record of one’s incumbent councillor.

of the Flies. There are a few incumbents who’ve stood out either as candidates for re-election or for the boot.

Giorgio Mammoliti, the Ward 7 councillor surely leads the pack in the latter: more than any other councillor not blood-related to the mayor he’s been a very publicly destructive force on council.

Ron Moeser’s terrible attendance record can be partially excused as he was laid up for nearly a year from ankle surgery gone bad, but otherwise Ward 44 voters would be justified in turfing him.

Similarly long-serving councillor Norm Kelly, on the other hand, probably deserves another victory

lap in Ward 40 solely on the basis of his supply-teacher/ deputy mayor role in the final, potentially fractuous year of this last term.

Others, like Ward 22’s Josh Matlow or Ward 27’s Kristyn Wong-Tam, have maintained an active enough rookie term to make re-election a relatively easy choice.

What about those many incumbents who kept their heads down through the term?

And what do voters do in those seven wards with no incumbent?

It boils down to this: voters who take advantage of advance voting opportunities have more before them than whether it’s to be Ford More Years or four new years.

Getting it right will be delicate work, and nothing to be hasty about.

Toronto East General Hospital ( TEGH) is committed to promoting the best start for babies and their mothers.

Earlier this month, the east-end hospital served as the location for the Ontario launch of the Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI), a global, evidence-based standard of care shown to increase breastfeeding rates by promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding developed by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The initiative aims to support all mothers by giving them enough information to make informed and educated decisions about feeding their baby (including understanding the marketing pressures of formula companies) and promoting practices like skinto-skin contact within the first hour after birth.

tation tool kit and a 20-hour course tool kit to provide assistance and guidance to hospitals and community health services in Ontario, including family health teams, community health centres, aboriginal health access centres and nurse practitionerled clinics.

Best practices Toronto East General Hospital, one of just three hospitals in Ontario to achieve the BFI designation, has been working closely for several months with the Best Start Resource Centre by Health Nexus and the Provincial Council for Maternal Child Health to develop this collection of best practices.

“We’re trying to spread the baby-friendly knowledge

everywhere,” said Rob Devitt, TEGH’s CEO, at the event, noting when other hospitals for various reasons reduced or even eliminated their breastfeeding clinics, TEGH made it a priority to keep its “well-used and well-run” breastfeeding clinic going.

“This is about ensuring as many people can end up breastfeeding.”

Linda Young, the local hospital’s director of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, spoke about the BFI’s many advantages for both babies and mothers at the launch event.

“Breastfeeding and skinto-skin practices, through the BFI 10 steps, are shown to improve not only infant health and development, but also to protect mothers from some types of cancer and other health problems,” she said, noting it was only about a year ago that the provincial Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced funding to ensure women receive the support they need to breastfeed successfully.

Shane Belcourt screens Kaha:wi: the Cycle of Life at imagineNATIVE JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Upper Beach filmmaker Shane Belcourt is excited to once again be showcasing his creativity in the imagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival.

An award-winning filmmaker, writer, director and musician, Belcourt has two pieces in the 15th annual event, which runs from October 22 to 26.

On Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m., he’ll be presenting the world premiere of his 45-minute film Kaha:wi: the Cycle of Life, which tells the colourful story of celebrated Mohawk choreographer/performer Santee Smith and her interpretation of traditional Iroquois legends through her contemporary dance in her newest solo production, Neoindigena.

“We had a total blast shooting this one. It was amazing,” said Belcourt, pointing to the great team – cinematographer James Klopko and production designer David Hannan – he was fortunate to work with on this project, which was shot in the summer of 2013 in Toronto and on the Six Nations of The Grand River reserve about 25 kilometres southwest of Hamilton.

“Santee and I would not have the film we have without the brilliance of these two artists to collaborate with. It was a joy and dream project because of the team!”

Kaha:wi: the Cycle of Life, part of the Cinema Sisters: Women’s Program, will be screened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, 350 King St. W., at Peter Street.

Belcourt is also involved in a special program for the 15th annual imagineNATIVE festival called Storyteller Screenings. He is one of just four artists invited to take part in this project where two authors are each paired up with a filmmaker to collaborate and create a screen-based video work that accompanies a live reading.

Belcourt, who is of Métis decent, is working with acclaimed Cree/French/ Scottish storyteller Maria Campbell on a project called Apikiwiyak (Coming Home).

original piece, which is about the sad realities and neverending legacy of colonial violence against Indigenous women, along with the screening of Belcourt’s 12-minute short film, will take place Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m., also at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Belcourt’s interest in filmmaking first piqued when he was in high school when he’d help his father – notable aboriginal rights leader and Order of Canada recipient Tony Belcourt – run his educational documentary company.

The Ottawa native’s mother is Nova Scotian musician/ actress Judith Pierce Martin, his sister Christi is a renowned artist, and his other sister Suzanne is a graphic artist.

It’s no surprise Belcourt went on to study film production and screenwriting at York University, but left after three years to pursue his dreams of becoming a rock star.

“I wanted to make Woody Allen romantic comedies and I wanted to be in Stevie Ray Vaughan’s band. That was the goal,” he shared during a recent interview.

A talented blues guitarist and songwriter, Belcourt went on to enjoy a successful career in music with his band Woodrow, which released a full-length CD and won some songwriting competitions.

He then embarked on a solo project founding the Shane Anthony Band where he did all of the song writing. During this period, Belcourt released three CDs, also nominated for a few songwriting awards. His musical career culminated producing the Juno Awardnominated CD Seeds by Digging Roots.

About seven years ago, Belcourt decided to turn his focus back to filmmaking when his daughter Claire was born.

He’s since written and directed scores of notable films and TV projects including his debut film, Tkaronto, which closed imagineNATIVE in 2007 and went on to be screened at several international film festivals.

Belcourt has also written/ directed the short films The Squeeze Box, Pookums and Keeping Quiet as well as Boxed In, a National Film Board production that was included in the Canadian pavilion at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

He’s also written and/or directed the dramatic feature film A Better Place, the TV series Embracing Mason, the short multimedia film Engine’s Good, and the lowbudget indie feature film Hard Feelings, among other things.

Belcourt, whose work is known for exploring and celebrating Indigenous issues and culture, has also made several films with his best friends Duane Murray and Jordan O’Connor under the banner of The Story Attic and/ or The Breath Films.

His next big project is a 13-part documentary called Urban Native Girl, which is set to be broadcast on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

Belcourt also teaches filmmaking workshops throughout the year to Aboriginal youth and youth-at-risk through various Aboriginal outreach programs.

Ted Reeve Hockey Association hosts festivities Saturday >>>from page 1 And Beverley was also there, a member of the atom level under-10 year olds playing for a Knob Hill team, when the Ted Reeve Hockey Association (TRHA) started its inaugural season.

“I can remember playing a loose puck, chipped it off the boards, then deked the goalie for the winning goal,” Beverley said. “It was a wonderful atmosphere playing at Ted Reeve and a big deal as a kid.”

Beverley wasn’t alone with his praise and has memories and tributes of an amateur hockey organization that may be one of the oldest in Canada.

Al Sims also has a treasured story about his debut in the good ole’ hockey game.

For Sims, his roots trace back to the early years of the classic arena at Main and Gerrard – not far from where he lived.

Sims remembers when his father convinced him to get the skates out of the closet and play some hockey.

At the age of 14, Sims said he put up some resistance, but ended up losing.

“Back then, I was playing on outdoor rinks, on a recreational team and for Riverdale United Church developing friendships with guys at the Pape Recreation Centre,” recalled Sims, who had 10 years in the NHL with Boston, Hartford and Los Angeles and was the first round pick of the New York Raiders in the World Hockey Association.

“My father pushed me to try out for the Ted Reeve teams and he was right. Going to play at Ted Reeve, even for only two years, raised the level of my game, I played on good teams, had great coaching and things just took off from there. Ted Reeve is really where it all started for me and I even remember being on a team that may have gone undefeated.”

Beverley and Sims, and there are many more, have a hearty appetite for hockey, great memories and chronicles of the good times in the TRHA – an organization that will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a full day of activities Saturday at Ted Reeve arena.

For Sims, his career highlights go beyond playing in a handful of Stanley Cup playoffs, but becoming teammates with Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Dave Keon and Phil Esposito.

And he’ll never forget teaming up on the blue line with someone known as Bobby Orr. Hundreds of players, parents, coaches and alumni are expected to attend the festivities Saturday at Ted Reeve Arena and pay tribute to one of Canada’s oldest hockey organizations named after a Second World War veteran, Canadian Sports Hall

of Fame inductee and an individual who, as a journalist, wrote about the game.

Yet, Ted Reeve’s claim to fame happened to be as a Grey Cup champ, a lacrosse Mann Cup winner and an individual known for his inspiration to others. A longtime Beach resident, Reeve wrote sports columns for both the Toronto Telegram and then the Toronto Sun. He died in 1983, and is buried in the St. John’s Norway cemetery.

Stan Edgell wasn’t as fortunate to make it from his tiny tot days to the NHL, but he claims to be the first coach of the TRHA. “I remember coaching 12 years and winning a house league title,” said the current 82-year old, who had another link to the rink as one of the iron workers whose job was to get the arena opened in 1954.

“Back then, I remember pulling barrels of water to flood the ice. Heck, we didn’t have any Zambonis.”

Edgell, also a former referee-inchief at Ted Reeve, also played in goal and tore ligaments in a game jumping over the boards to stop a fight that involved peewee age players.

“Times have changed since those days,” Edgell said. “Now, house

leagues are like babysitters. Parents drop their kids and take off. There are also challenges – money to play and maintain a league. Even the volunteers are no longer around in the numbers like in past.”

Steve King, president of the TRHA, knows a great deal has come from six decades of helping youngsters learn to play hockey and have fun.

But he has concerns about the

future.

“The numbers are down for house leagues over the past 10 years,” he said.

“We used to have 800 players and that has dropped to 380. There also used to be lots of people who really cared and gave their free time to help. Now it’s so much harder to find them with so many other things going on.”

King said the culture has also changed the game with many newcomers not familiar with hockey often leaning to other sports.

Ted Reeve hockey’s 60th anniversary celebrations are set for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and will continue all day.

Know and recognize the signs of breast cancer As with many types of cancer, breast cancer is most successfully treated when detected early. Death rates are declining as a byproduct of heightened awareness of breast cancer over the last 25 years and the increasing emphasis on screening.

While the presence of any of the following symptoms does not necessarily mean breast cancer is present, the appearance of the following should be enough to inspire women and even men to visit their physicians for examinations and screen.

• A change in how the breast or nipple

feels could indicate a larger problem.

If the nipple is especially tender and this persists for an extended period of time discuss this change with your physician. Similarly, if a lump or thickening develops on or near the breast or underarms, speak with your physician.

• Another visible symptom of breast cancer is a change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast, which may appear similar to dimpling, not unlike an orange peel. Swelling or shrinking of the

Road Sweeping Operation Toronto & East York District Transportation Services is getting ready to perform sweeping operations on the streets of Toronto & East York this fall.The purpose of the sweeping is to collect leaves that fall, naturally, onto the street.

All streets will be swept on two occasions.The operation will continue until November 28, 2014.The map shows the area where the sweeping operation will take place.

Please do not rake leaves onto the roadway or sidewalks from your property. City by-law officers will be enforcing the City of Toronto by-law that relates to the use of streets and sidewalks. Raking leaves onto the roadway is a by-law offence and could result in charges being laid. It is an offence to store, place or dispose of material, including fallen leaves in such a way that it may enter onto a street by any means, including wind or water. In addition, raking, blowing, placing or dumping leaves onto City property (sidewalk, roadway, catch basins, etc.,) can create dangerous conditions, cause flooding on the roadways or on property or cause accidents.

Here’s how to put leaves out for collection: Use reusable containers (any rigid open-top container such as a garbage can, bushel basket, green plastic yard waste bin– no lids) or kraft paper yard waste bags.

Put leaves at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled yard waste collection day. Check your collection calendar for your yard waste collection schedule and more helpful hints.

Sorry, no plastic bags: The City does not collect leaves and yard waste in clear plastic bags or Halloween-themed plastic bags. (If you use these decorative bags, please empty the contents into one of the approved containers listed above before placing out for collection.

Ways to reduce the amount of leaves you put at the curb for collection: Feed leaves to your backyard composter now, plus stockpile leaves to add as dry material during the winter.

Here’s what the City collects as yard waste: Leaves, plant/tree trimmings, weeds and brush. Branches measuring less than three inches or 7.5 cm in diameter should be tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet or 1.2 min length and 2 feet or 0.6 m in diameter. Pumpkins and waste fruit from trees in your yard are also accepted.

Re-imagining the port lands, improving transit flow and, of course, respecting taxpayers were all discussed during the Ward 30 all-candidates meeting held last week by the Toronto Taxpayers Coalition – but only three of six candidates were there.

Among those missing included three-time incumbent Paula Fletcher and high-profile candidate Jane Farrow, whose absence at the first public debate did not go unnoticed by candidates Liz West, Dan Trayes and Francis Russell.

“I was invited by a community and regardless of who you are and your political affiliations I’ll take the meeting and I’ll work for you,” said West, who narrowly lost to Fletcher in the last election.

Despite a small audience, the candidates addressed a number of issues, including how to deal with small businesses in the TorontoDanforth area.

While longtime resident Russell did not believe it was a municipal issue, both Trayes and West agreed there was mismanagement in the city

and too much red tape for small businesses to cross.

“Small-business owners are spending too much time waiting in line at city hall and that’s not productive,” West said. She also criticized the city’s move this summer to tear up Queen Street East for nearly two months, effectively halting business.

When it came to public and private partnerships, especially with the port lands along the lakeshore, the candidates were divided on their vision for the area.

“Board it off and don’t let anyone go there because you will die,” Russell said of the contaminated lands.

Trayes and West, however, saw the opportunity for development once the lands were cleaned.

“I personally feel the need for public housing in the area,” Trayes said.

West saw the lands as an “amazing opportunity” to build a sports complex, or model it after British Columbia’s Dockside Green.

Each candidate also had their own take on transit.

“We’re using band-aids when what we really need is surgery,” Russell said, offering not much more of a solution

than for more people to work at home and drive less.

West agreed the problems were many and that the city was playing catch-up.

“We should not cancel what’s been approved and funded,” she said, adding that mayoral candidate John Tory’s SmartTrack plan was especially enticing.

Easing taxes, specifically the municipal land transfer tax, was raised by a member of the audience.

“It’s got to go because it’s freezing the housing market,” Russell said to applause. West and Trayes, however, advocated for the revenue tool.

“Everyone deserves a little relief, but it was implemented for a need,” Trayes said, adding that he wasn’t a homeowner.

West agreed it would be near impossible to eliminate the tax at this point, but offered a solution to share the land transfer tax between the buyer and seller.

By the end of the debate, all candidates agreed they were there to bring change.

Advance polls opened on Tuesday.

Mercedes-Benz Downtown teams up with Heart and Stroke Foundation

With every minute that passes without help, the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest drops seven to 10 per cent.

There are 40,000 sudden cardiac arrests occurring every year in Canada, 7,000 in Ontario alone, which is why Mercedes-Benz Toronto Corporate Stores and The Heart and Stroke Foundation have partnered to offer their local community members the opportunity to learn life-saving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

will host complimentary HandsOnly™ CPR training sessions for the public on Sunday, O c tober 19, from 10:00am-11:30am and 1:00pm-2:30pm. The sessions will be conducted by certified medical practitioners.

For 2014, all of Mercedes-Benz Downtown sponsorship dollars have once again been allocated exclusively to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. As a lead sponsor, they are dedicated to providing the community with the necessary training to increase chances of survival from cardiac arrest.

L a s t y e a r, M e r c e d e s - B e n z Downtown trained over 125 community members in life saving HandsOnly™ CPR. Due to popular demand, infant CPR training has been added to this year’s sessions.

Learning the skills is easy, and it could mean saving the life of a friend or family member. The Heart and Stroke Foundation encourages all Canadians to learn CPR.

“ The more people trained, the greater the chance of keeping a person who is experiencing cardiac arrest alive until an ambulance arrives,” says Andrew Lotto, Manager, Resuscitation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
