The East End Comedy Revue is back.

Founded and hosted by Dave Martin of CBC’s The Debaters, the event ended with the closure of The Dominion in 2014.

Recently, Leslieville entrepreneur and professionally certified Sunday dog trainer Katie Reid approached Mar tin about bringing back the event, which raises funds for local charities.

The evening of laughs for a great cause is set to mark its return on Sunday at The Duke Live, 1225 Queen St. E. at Leslie Street. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Stand-up comedian Tim Steeves of This Hour has 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report will serve as the headlining act for the evening, which will also feature an all-star comedic line-up that includes Canadian Comedy Award winner Peter Anthony, who recently opened for Jerry Seinfeld at the Elgin Theatre.

Community Centre 55 hosts a Halloween Family Day Sunday Lots of spooky fun will be on hand Sunday in the Upper Beach as Community Centre 55 hosts a Halloween Family Day. JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Voters in Beaches-East York elected Liberal Nathaniel Erskine-Smith as their new MP in the 2015 federal election.

The first-time candidate handily unseated NDP incumbent Matthew Kellway, who finished with 17,137 (30.8 per cent) votes to Erskine-Smith’s 27,441 (49.4 per cent).

“I always thought politics was something I’d be doing down the road,” ErskineSmith said as he thanked supporters attending his victory party in the upstairs meeting room at the Ted Reeve Community Arena.

“So many of you were here from the very beginning,” he said to his crowd of his supporters, asking them to continue their involvement in politics. “Let’s over the next four years continue to make our voices heard.”

Erskine-Smith, an advocate and a commercial litigation lawyer who grew up in and currently lives in the riding with his wife, Amy, vowed he’d work hard for smart, fair and honest government over the next four years.

He s a i d h e g o t i n t o politics for two reasons: to change the Stephen Harper Conservative government and because of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.

Kellway, a father of three who has lived in the riding with his wife Donna for nearly 20 years, was gracious in defeat.

“I think we ran a great campaign and I did my best as an MP,” he said in an interview from his election night

party at Time Capsule Café on Danforth Avenue, just east of Woodbine Avenue.

He said he devoted as much time and energy to his role as he could and has no regrets.

“There is a silver lining to all of this. It’s an opportunity to call home, home again,” Kellway said.

In the end, he said voters saw the appeal of the Trudeau Liberals and voted accordingly.

“It was beyond us locally,” Kellway said, adding “fear of the Conservatives” also likely played a role in the way people voted. “(Beaches-East York) went back to the Liberals for the same reason they held (the riding) for 18 years.”

Conservative Bill Burrows finished third with 9,141 votes (16.5 per cent), while Green Party candidate Randall Sach came in fourth with 1,431 votes (2.6 per cent).

and Peter Surjanac were also on the ballot.

Kellway was first elected MP for Beaches-East York in the 2011 federal election. He took the riding by 5,000 votes from Liberal Maria Minna who had held the riding for the previous 18 years.

Beaches-East York (formerly Beaches-Woodbine), which has existed since 1988, is bounded by Lake Ontario to the south, Sunrise Avenue and the Don River East Branch to the north, Victoria Park Avenue to the east, and Coxwell Avenue/ Coxwell Boulevard to the west.

Toronto-Danforth’s 11-year tenure of being an orange riding came to an end Monday night with the election of Liberal Julie Dabrusin.

“What an amazing journey this has been,” Dabrusin said on election night, celebrating her win at Il Fornello restaurant at Danforth and Pape avenues.

“We talked about hope and hard work and we had that here in Toronto-Danforth.”

A bilingual litigation lawyer who is taking a break from her career to raise her family in the riding, Dabrusin said she and her campaign team knocked on more than 30,000 doors in the riding over the course of the 78-day election campaign.

“It was a great experience and a great chance to get the message out about making the country better,” she said early Tuesday morning.

“Now t h e h a rd w o rk begins. We’ve had a long decade and there’s a lot of hard work ahead of us and that’s what (the Liberal Party) is committed to doing.”

Dabrusin took the riding from incumbent NDP Craig Scott, who has represented the riding in Ottawa since a March 2012 byelection.

She won with 23.531 votes (42.3 per cent) to Scott’s 22.261 votes (40.0 per cent) “I’m humbled by the fact I’m being given this opportunity by all of you,” Dabrusin said.

“I promise I will work hard for all of you.”

Danforth, but that it was always a possibility.

“I was actually prepared for it,” Scott said on election night from his party at the Fox and Fiddle pub at Danforth and Pape avenues.

“Earlier in the day I had a premonition.”

Regardless, Scott said his second-place finish is a respectable one.

“It was a very close loss compared to other areas of the city,” he said, adding he’s proud to have represented a riding that is “deeply embedded in the spirit of solidarity and of taking care of others” in Ottawa. “(Toronto-Danforth) is a great place to live and a great riding,” Scott said, attributing strategic voting as one of the main reasons for his loss.

The Conservative Party’s Benjamin Dichter finished third with 5,265 votes or 9.9 per cent of the vote, while Chris Tolley of the Green Party earned 2,538 votes (4.9 per cent).

Also on the ballot were Elizabeth Abbott for the Animal Alliance Environment

Voters Party of Canada and John Richardson for the Progressive Canadian Party.

On March 19, 2012, firsttime NDP candidate Scott won a byelection race in Toronto-Danforth. The downtown east riding was previously held for just over three terms from 2004 to 2011 by former NDP leader Jack Layton, who died of cancer in August 2011.

Toronto-Danforth (formerly BroadviewGreenwood), which has been represented in the House of Commons since 1979, is bounded by Lake Ontario to the south, Taylor Creek and the Don River East Branch to the north, Coxwell Avenue/ Coxwell Boulevard to the east, and the Don River to the west.

The federal electoral district encompasses municipal wards 29 and 30 (TorontoDanforth) and is home to several charming neighbourhoods, namely Riverdale, Leslieville, Riverside, East York, Pape Village and Playter Estates.

Keep your Liberal MP accountable I

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night.

With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign.

It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time poliour view ticians. As it is a majority government, they will be your voice in for the next four years.

City’s priority Ottawa And while majority governissues must ments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power.

The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs.

These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government.

In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province.

Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding.

Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign.

Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Cold fall weather passing with flying colours It was chillier than usual for mid-October last weekend.

Not surprisingly the unseasonable weather kept a lot of the locals inside.

Too bad. They missed a golden opportunity to check out some great fall scenery.

Take my favourite nature trail, Cedarvale Ravine. The dip in temperature provided a multitude of stunning sights that one normally doesn’t experience this time of year.

I didn’t have to go far for my first breathtaking view either. After just one step on the venerable path, I immediately came across a majestic yellow-bellied turtleneck. I couldn’t believe my good fortune.

It was on a park bench behind the Heath Street entrance of St. Clair West station. I didn’t want to scare it away, so I tip-toed over in hopes of getting a closer shot with my camera.

It appeared to be whistling what sounded like the OK, Blue Jays theme song.

I listened for a few verses,

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY but then was distracted by a an eye-catching dark black double-breasted trench coat. And get this: it was standing upright against a tree warbling with a peach pullover. I kid you not.

Wow. I’d been out for all of a minute-and-a-half and I’d seen all this already? I felt like I was in selfie heaven.

As much as I enjoyed the show, I was eager to see what else was out there, so I headed down the hill.

Within seconds, a flurry of baby blue toques went whizzing by. On their heels was a flock of white longsleeve shirts.

Both groups came and went in the blink of an eye.

I made a mental note not to blink anymore. I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn’t miss a thing.

I moseyed along and as I looked at the steps leading to a bridge high above, I

caught a glimpse of four sets of maroon mountain boots scurrying up in perfect sync. There was a quartet of matching red and white scarves around their necks flapping away in the breeze.

I rounded the bend and staring at me was a pair of deep brown wooly socks.

They were peeking out from beneath some pale gray sweatpants.

I was snapping away furiously. I knew I would need to have proof. No way anybody would believe me if I said I had seen all this stuff in one morning.

As I headed past the fenced off area for dogs, the pooches were barking away at each other and at the pink mittens and gold gloves watching them.

Over the hill next to the tennis court I saw a beige cardigan perched next to a lavender hoodie. On the soccer field across from them a green vest was enjoying the company of an orange balaclava.

As I continued on I came

across a cornucopia of turquoise trousers, lavender sweaters and purple parkas.

It was surreal I tell you.

I was there until early afternoon and then headed home. On the TV weather report the meteorologist said temperatures would be back to normal for the weeks ahead. So I raced back to the ravine.

As fate would have it, that yellow-bellied turtleneck was still at the same park bench. I joined him for a more few choruses of OK, Blue Jays and then called it a day.

And what a day it turned out to be. No question the season always gets good marks, come rain or come shine.

But last weekend clearly proved fall will pass with flying colours when you add a little cold into the mix, too.

Construction begins on Kingston Road YMCA JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A new YMCA on Kingston Road, just west of Victoria Park Avenue, in the Upper Beach will soon be taking shape.

On Tuesday, dozens of supporters gathered in the gymnasium of the former East City YMCA at 907 Kingston Rd. to break ground on the 60,000-square-foot Toronto Kingston Rd. YMCA Centre, which will be located on two levels of the six-storey Beech House condominium development at the same site.

“We really can’t believe (this day) is here,” Virginal Dimoglou, the new YMCA’s general manager, said at the start of the event.

For the last few years, Dimoglou and her colleagues have been meeting with the community to discuss the services, programs and even the look of the future community

hub, which is the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s third Centre of Community.

Medhat Mahdy, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto, thanked everyone in attendance for helping make the project a reality.

“We would not be here without all of you,” he said, crediting developer Bob Mitchell of Mitchell and Associates for his major role in bringing the project to fruition.

Mahdy said that although the circa-1953 building was well loved, the YMCA of Greater Toronto felt it could support many more people in the community with an expanded facility in the city’s east end as well as offer a wider variety of programs and services.

Tim Penner, the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s former chair of the board, agreed.

“We want to be there for

more people who need our support, from downtown to the 905, from northern Scarborough to right here in the Upper Beach. We want to give more children, teens, adults and families a strong start to a great future,” he said, pointing to a $500,000 gift from long-time Beach residents/ philanthropists Eric Tripp and Maria Smith in support of the new Kingston Road Y. The Kingston Road YMCA will include a gym, pool, group fitness areas and child minding as well as spaces for youth and community programs.

Its construction will transform the parcel of land that housed the former East City YMCA, the Sherrin Funeral Home as well as two homes at 218 and 220 Balsam Ave.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer found in Canadian women, and understanding your personal risk factors can help to avoid becoming a part of this demographic. Getting screened for abnormalities is an easy first preventative step you can take. Here is a quick-guide to breast health: • Understand your personal risk: Risk factors of breast cancer can include your gender, age, breast density and genetics. Women have a higher chance of getting breast cancer than men, as do women over the age of 60. Family history that includes ovarian and breast cancer in female relatives can also raise the risk, along with having a particular genetic disposition. Women with dense breasts have also been shown to have an increased risk.

Understanding your personal risks and how your lifestyle impacts these risks can help you in the long run.

• Get screened: A mammogram x-ray is an effective form of detecting early signs of breast cancer. The procedure generally takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and is relatively painless. During your first screening appointment, you will undergo a mammogram procedure where the breast is compressed under two plates in order to create a clear image of breast tissue. It is recommended to get a mammogram every one to two years starting at age 40.

• Preventative measures: Practicing self-screening can also help with early diagnosis. It is recommended that women take a moment each month to self-screen.

Women should begin this exam in their early twenties and look for abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, redness, changes in nipple size and abnormal excretions. If anything abnormal is detected during the self exam, an appointment should be made with a doctor.

Myrrh-streaming icon visits Toronto’s St. John the Compassionate Mission The icon of the Kardiotissa (Tender Heart) Mother God, a piece of religious art that has been streaming myrrh (oil) for the last three years, is coming to St. John the Compassionate Mission in Riverside Friday and Saturday.

The sacred piece is kept at St. George’s Orthodox Greek Catholic Church in Taylor, Pennsylvania.

The Very Rev. Mark Leasure, the church’s pastor, will be bringing the icon to the local mission to comfort those who seek help there on a daily basis.

Leasure will speak about the icon and its effects of the lives of those who have venerated it on Friday at 7 p.m. during a prayer service led by youth.

People are welcome to come to St. John the Compassionate Mission to be anointed with myrrh from the icon as well as attend an all-night vigil before the icon in the mission’s chapel.

A divine liturgy followed by the departure of the icon will be held Saturday at 7 a.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend all events.

The group, along with Toronto Police Services and other sponsors, is promoting an advocacy campaign to educate cyclists about the dangers of riding in the dark without proper lights. As the group notes, along with being extremely dangerous, it will now cost cyclists $110 in fines for not having proper lighting.

Cycle Toronto is also organizing a fundraising bike ride this weekend in and around the Annex.

The group is looking to raise $50,000 in donations and is asking participants to either fundraise or pay $75 for one of 200 slots for the 20-kilometre ride Saturday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m., starting at the Centre for Social Innovation, 720 Bathurst St. The registration fee covers entry into the ride’s after party as well as “swag” for riders.

Toronto’s original and longest running artists’Studio Tour is celebrating its 22nd year this fall.
