Upper Beach resident Jason Abelson just wants his fouryear-old daughter, Anjali, and seven-year-old son, Max, to be able to cross Gerrard Street East at Scarborough Road without risking their lives.

“That corner is a death trap.

It’s a disaster,” said the five-year area resident.

“Every morning, we use the crosswalk and it’s 50-50 whether somebody’s going to stop or go barreling through.”

Abelson, who called that intersection an “accident waiting to happen”, decided to be proactive and in recent weeks has put together a petition calling on Toronto police to

So far, more than 85 people have signed the petition, which Abelson presented to 55 Division.

“I haven’t had a single person say no,” he noted.

“Let’s have a permanent solution to the problem before something horrible happens.”

Some called the letter “weird and gross” and “beyond disturbing”, while others expressed concerns about the feathers and their origin. “Harassment”, “intimidation” and “a criminal act” were also used to describe the letter.

In an interview with The Mirror, one Beach resident – who preferred to remain nameless – said she found one of the anonymous envelopes in question on Tuesday morning as she left for work.

“I was disgusted because I don’t know where those feathers come from,” the resident said, adding there’s a ‘no flyers’ sign clearly posted on the front of her home.

“It’s unnerving that they would know my name.”

woman’s family and a butterfly sticker where the return address would have been.

“I couldn’t believe the effort that went into it,” the Upper Beach resident said, admitting she finds this letter no more offensive than the Your Ward News tabloid residents receive periodically in their mailboxes.

“It’s just a stupid move.”

McMahon, who is running for a second term, called the whole thing “ridiculous.”

“It’s bizarre and it would be great to channel that energy for good,” she said Tuesday afternoon.

“This campaign has been incredibly nasty and it’s getting nastier by the minute this week.”

McMahon, who said she’s proud of her team for running a positive and clean campaign, said her office has received several calls from upset and irate residents.

Fifty-five Division police have been notified and are looking into the matter.

Community groups cite their top election issues JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com While municipal election candidates from wards 30 and 32 have had their time to discuss their top issues and priorities, The Mirror invited some local community organizations to share what matters the most to them.

In recent weeks, we reached out to four local groups: Gerrard East Community Organization (GECO), Danforth East Community Association (DECA), Beach Hill Neighbourhood Association and Greater Be a c h Ne i g h b o u r h o o d Association.

The Gerrard East Community Organization and the Danforth East Community Association provided us with their input.

In the unique location of spanning the borders of wards 30 and 32, down Coxwell Avenue and along Gerrard Street East, GECO engages with two city councillors on most of its issues.

“Collaboration is key in our neighbourhood to getting anything done. Collaboration between the residents, business owners/BIA (business improvement area), the not-for-profit organizations, and the city representatives,” wrote Tammy Rogers, GECO’s co-chair and communications coordinator, in a recent email to The Mirror.

With input from her fellow GECO members, Rogers listed five key election issues: 1. Traffic and child/pedestrian safety Our little neighbourhood is densely populated with young families and home to at least three schools. The residential side streets have long been used as commuter shortcuts for people traveling from the far east to downtown and back again after work.

Due to TTC changeover and general traffic congestion at the Gerrard/Coxwell intersection, many drivers cut through the one-way residential streets. Active community members have been working with current councillors and city planners to install traffic calming measures and redirect the influx of commuter traffic onto the appropriate roadways. Further measures

are needed to eliminate the long wait period at that key intersection and keep traffic flowing. Both ward councillors have to work together to resolve this for both sides of the street.

2. Invigorating business The traditionally South Asian business strip has been on a slow decline for the last two decades but in the last few years has experienced a new wave of businesses opening up. It is our desire to see the traditional South Asian businesses continue to flourish while making room for new businesses to serve the changing community. The BIA needs to recognize that new businesses will not push them out, but increase overall traffic to the area and make for a more lively, commercial destination. It is imperative that changes be made to bylaws or caveats that reward negligent landlords leaving buildings vacant or derelict and new measures be introduced such as alternative leaseholds (i.e. pop-ups) and capped rental increases on storefront commercial properties to encourage new entrepreneurs. Councillors need to be onboard with innovative, progressive business models and support the BIA and small business owners through this transition.

3. Continued community supports As the neighbourhood changes, new businesses open and housing prices climb, GECO has always been concerned about ensuring that “gentrification” takes the form of a “revitalization” and doesn’t push out long-term residents and businesses.

The residential community is home to mixed-income properties, including Toronto Community Housing, co-op housing and other affordable rental units. It is imperative to maintain this type of structure to make the neighbourhood vibrant, diverse and resilient.

With growing numbers of new families moving in, there is a strong need for more affordable daycare options without a three-plus year waitlist.

4. Crime prevention The east end continues to be plagued with home and car break-ins, bike theft and other illicit activity. It

would be great to see proactive measures take place to ensure increased safety on our streets, laneways and at home. Town halls, safety audits and foot patrols are a great start but what could the next steps be?

5. Community engagement We are fortunate to have a number of amazing parks, community gardens and energetic leaders in our ‘hood that have thrived under current council. This is a very active community that hosts many events and activities that add to Toronto’s social and cultural life. We really hope to see that investment and engagement continue after the election and Gerrard East continues to be the best place to live, work and play in Toronto. Bonus! If new council would petition the province to de-amalgamate the city.

DECA Since its inception in 2007, the Danforth East Community

Association has been working to fulfill its mission of building a stronger, more vibrant, walkable, safe neighbourhood. This community association aims to empower its residents through community involvement and has achieved this goal through the establishment of a number of popular volunteer and community-driven initiatives including the East Lynn Farmers’ Market and the Danforth East Arts Fair.

“Each of these enterprises began as someone’s dream or idea to meet our goal of improving our little pocket of east Toronto. We rely on building and maintaining good working relationships with local city councillors in all four wards (29, 30, 31 and 32) surrounding Danforth East to keep moving forward,” Anita Schretlen, DECA’s chair, wrote in an email to The Mirror.

In an effort to build a better and stronger community, DECA listed three key points its members would like to see newly elected officials make a priority: 1. To continue to be a pro-

ponent of inclusive neighbourhood transformation by providing leadership, lending a voice and adding value to the process of visioning from the perspective of residents.

2. To continue building neighbourhood walkability and safety through the support and initialization of revitalization projects of the Danforth shopping strip, especially DECA’s efforts to lobby the provincial government to revoke the current structure of the provincial Property Tax Rebate Program for Vacant Commercial and Industrial buildings, which has rewarded landlords for keeping shops empty. The negative impact of the Tax Rebate Program – chronically empty storefronts – has particularly affected our section of The Danforth.

3. To continue supporting our established communitybuilding events, including the East Lynn Farmers’ Market, Danforth East Arts Fair, the Pop-up Shop Program, the East Lynn Pumpkin Parade, the Harvest Festival, the annual Neighbourhood-wide Garage Sale, the Holiday Tree Lighting and the Adopt-a-tree Program.

“Our volunteers are really tapped out right now so even though this may seem like a small request, I’m sorry that we can’t participate right now,” wrote longtime Beach Hill resident Kate Tennier in an email to The Mirror.

In March 2012, Tennier founded and continues to chair the BHNA, which aims to support the continued rejuvenation of the local commercial district by fostering a “shop local” attitude to sustain a walkable and thriving neighbourhood.

Jan Hykamp, president of the GBNA, elaborated on the association’s decision to opt out from this article.

He said the association is “very dependent on the relationship it maintains with elected officials” adding “the sudden change in MPPs at the provincial level earlier this year demonstrated for us the importance of remaining very neutral, especially during an election.”

“For this reason, our steering committee has chosen to forgo the opportunity for an article. We hope you understand and look forward to a future opportunity to speak to the issues that matter to our organization,” Hykamp wrote.

The GBNA is a non-profit u m b re l l a o rg a n i z a t i o n encompassing seven community groups in the Greater Beach Area from Coxwell to Victoria Park avenues, Lake Ontario to the railway corridor south of Danforth Avenue including the Beach Triangle Residents Association, Kew Be a c h Ne i g h b o u r h o o d Association, Toronto Beach East Residents Association, Friends of Glen Davis Ravine, Norwood Park Residents Association, Beach Waterfront Community Association and Balmy Beach Neighbourhood Association. The primary focus of the GBNA, which was formed in February 2012, is land-use planning.

Civic leadership is a critical issue Toronto remains a city with strengths and advantages that others around the world can only emulate. However, the lack of true political vision has disrupted serious progress on key issues such as economic and transit development.

Political culture has been fractious and detrimental to building trust in leadership for the city moving forward.

All of this means civic leadership has become a key issue in Monday’s municipal election.

We had a record number of advance poll votes cast this year. The 161,147 votes cast is far more than ever before at advace polls. We hope that means residents take this election seriously and have taken the time to seriously question candidate platforms.

Here are key issues a voter needs to consider: Leadership: Thankfully, there has been no major pre-election alignment between mayoral and council candidates.

We need council members who openly fight for the needs and desires of their individual ward – and are not expected to blindly fall into line with mayoral direction.

This city needs a leader who can work with council members from the most liberal to the most conservative. We need a mayor who can lead a council that works together – and leaves the cheap shots and uncalled-for language and accusations behind.

We need a mayor who speaks in facts – and can competently back up their view. That mayor must expect the same from council members.

A mayor must work aggressively and respectfully with provincial and federal governments. A mayor must build a profile on an international level and be respected as an ambassador on behalf of every resident.

Transit: It would be hard to find two Torontonians who believe there is a focused plan for our transit future.

Confusion, hostility and easily debunked transit plans have ruled four years of discussion. Yet, congestion increases.

Transit builds take decades to complete. Meanwhile, the quality of life in Toronto erodes with no clear direction.

Economic development: As do most major cities, Toronto suffers from unacceptable unemployment rates and is lacking in opportunity for the socially disadvantaged. We face stiff competition all the time from other lesser communities who woo industrial and retailer developers. If asked what issues were priorities of this past council, would economic development even rise to the surface?

Toronto needs a new, unified vision for the future and fast.

We believe John Tory is the only candidate who can deliver the unity, the vision and the results the city needs.

That said, it’s you who does the voting. Please take the time to study the platform of your mayoral and council candidates. Consider the past four years simply lessons learned, and choose wisely on Monday.

Chow the choice for this columnist Immigrant It is something of a cliché to say a municipal election marks a cross-roads for a city. But after four years of the Ford family’s wild reign at Toronto City Hall, any kind of road seems a relief.

Based on the polls, a small majority of voters believes themselves to have found that road in the form of John Tory. Fiscally conservative, gracious of manner and civically engaged, the former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader, business executive and talk radio show host has presented himself as an agreeable antidote to the melodrama at City Hall.

Tory would follow the rules. He would maintain cordial relationships on council and with other levels of government. His history of volunteer work on matters of social inclusion make it clear he could be expected to govern from a fiscally conservative centre.

Elements of his platform, however, make him maddeningly difficult to endorse.

david nickle the city Key among these is the $8-billion (or so) SmartTrack surface rail plan that has been criticized for its vague and risky tax increment financing plan.

With that said, SmartTrack is an improvement on the plan put forward first by Mayor Rob Ford and then his brother Doug, to pursue an unsupportable plan to build 32 kilometres of subway and kill the remaining planned light rail lines.

Which brings us to Olivia Chow. For those voting strategically, third-place Chow seems a terrible bet. Yet she offers the most fiscally conservative and civically constructive platform in the race. Chow is promising tax increases marginally higher than Tory’s, and a land transfer tax premium for $2-million-plus real estate transactions. But she would

push to return the costly Scarborough subway to its provincially funded light rail predecessor, and put the billion dollars in tax revenue slated for the subway toward a necessary but unfunded downtown relief line.

Some aspects of Chow’s platform might not come off as planned – notably, her plans to increase bus service and build affordable housing. But these failures would leave Toronto in a status quo, not in ruinous debt.

Chow may have proven to be an inexpert campaigner and an often tenuous debater. But on Oct. 27, the debating and campaigning is over for nearly four years.

And Chow’s work as a city councillor and Member of Parliament has demonstrated an ability to lead allies and parlay with opponents that Toronto’s next mayor will need in spades.

By those measures, Chow is the best choice on Oct. 27.

Your stories about Hurricane Hazel reminded me that my father had just arrived in Toronto in the fall of 1954 and wrote to my mother and me in Ireland about the terrific rain he had to drive through one October evening.

“You should see the kind of storms they have in this country,” he said.

It wasn’t until I came to Toronto in 1956 that I realized it had been the hurricane – something we never had in Ireland.

Contemporary Security Canada (CSC) announces the opening of their Toronto Hiring Centre and welcomes interested candidates to apply for security positions to work at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. They are looking

for Security Guards, Security Screeners and Security Supervisors from across Ontario to work at the Games.

CSC offers paid training programs, wages from $19-21 per hour, free uniforms and free meals for staff, plus offers a $600 licensing bonus for individuals with a valid Ontario Security Guard Licence.

CSC is recognized as an industry leader in crowd management and specializes in providing security solutions.

Teen driving: Take the responsible road While an RBC Insurance survey1 shows that 9 in 10 parents rate their teens as fairly good drivers, many teenagers still fall prey to common driving misconceptions.

Fact: Cell phones are a significant visual and cognitive distraction for drivers, with average “eyes off the road” times that increase the risk of collision considerably.

Drivers engaged in text messaging on a cell phone are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near crash event than non-distracted drivers.2 Myth: “I’ve only had one drink so I’m fine to drive.”

Fact: Any amount of alcohol impairs driving and increases the risk of collision. Even one drink can cloud your thinking, dim your vision and slow your reflexes.

Legendary wrestler singing a new tune - literally DAVID GROSSMAN bsrm@insidetoronto.com For years, he was a traditional Saturday feature on television.

The hulking black body, bleached blond hair, the strikingly out of the ordinary costumes, muscles flexed, Reginald Siki took to the wrestling ring – including Maple Leaf Gardens for 18 years – drawing big and rowdy crowds for well more than three decades.

Many remember him as Sweet Daddy Siki, the pioneer of black wrestlers, and more popular than old-time grapplers Whipper Billy Watson, Gene “Big Thunder” Kiniski, Abdullah The Butcher, Dick “The Bulldog” Brower and Lord Athol Layton.

Siki was just that much better – and more entertaining. He still won’t reveal secrets – no matter how hard you push him.

He refused to divulge his age, even though reports claim he’s in his late 70s. He won’t even confirm whether his place of birth was Jamaica or Montgomery, Tex., saying his life story is soon to appear in a book where he tells all.

Same for the nickname, given

to him in Montreal, where he appealed to female fans.

But Siki does admit to bleaching his hair and people knew it was Siki when a guy entered the ring with a sequined vest, oversized sunglasses and white gloves.

“I saw my first wrestling match at age 14 and knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do.”

Si k i s t a r t e d p o u n d ing bodies to the mat for a former school once known as Compton College in Los Angeles. That was back in the 1950s and learning the ropes also in New Mexico, with a physique that blossomed at one time to the size of an offensive lineman.

U.S. expat The U.S. expatriate has made Toronto his home for the past half century. His wife of almost 50 years, died six months ago.

There are stories about Sweet Daddy Siki earning $13 for his first pro wrestling match and then seeing that climb to $3,000 a bout at the famed Church and Carleton facility, Maple Leaf Gardens.

showed up from across North America, the Caribbean and the Far East.

His wrestling career came to an end in 1987, but he stayed involved running a wrestling school.

“Wrestling is scientific, but looking back, I was still a pretty damn good wrestler,” he said. “I’m very appreciative for everything.”

After his body had taken enough of a physical beating, and he does have some paralysis on the left side of his face, the legendary wrestler

traded in his colorful trunks for a songbook and found a second career as a performer on a different ring.

For him, the venue is now smaller – but he’s also quite happy.

On stage, he’s belting out some ole’ time rock and roll and his dulcet voice appears on several albums. His preference is country music, and Siki is still a wizard at entertaining crowds.

“When I was younger, I would never have thought I would have been this suc-

cessful,” he said.

For the past 25 years, he’s been receiving ovations as a karaoke host for The Duke Live.com restaurant and bar at Leslie Avenue and Queen Street East – a place, along with the Friends of Leslieville, that recently honored him for his career.

They lined up for autographs at the restaurant and even a documentary crew, producing his life story, rolled out some props – before and after his crowd-pleasing show – to generate attention for the wrestling icon that has his own theme song “I Am So Proud of What I See”.

In September, Sweet Daddy Siki was in the spotlight of the folks from the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Amsterdam, N.Y., who like to preserve and enshrine professional wrestlers.

He joins a long list of famed

grapplers that include Roddy Piper, Hulk Hogan, Walter “Killer” Kowalski and André the Giant.

But it was boxing legend George Chuvalo, a friend of Siki, who presented the man with the ring name “Mr. Irresistible” with a plaque at the event held in Vaughan in appreciation for his successes in professional wrestling.

Some remember Siki for his finishing moves, like the “Airplane Spin”.

Olson said 55 Division has received “several complaints” about the Gerrard Street East and Scarborough/Dengate roads intersection.

“We have actually submitted a request for assessment to the Traffic Services Unit,” he said, noting a response has yet to be received.

Confident the assessment will move forward, Olson said the “very thorough” study would involve an officer being on site for a number of days evaluating the number of elementary school children

who cross that intersection in the morning, at lunch time and after school, the distance from nearby schools to the intersection, as well as the number of adults/caregivers walking children to and from school.

The officer would also analyze accident data for the site from the last 24 months. Radar images as well as photographs will be used during the evaluation, if needed, he said.

Further, staff members from local schools, including the nearby Adam Beck Jr. Public School, would also be involved in the process, which will conclude with an in-depth report on solutions for addressing safety concerns.

“Safety, not convenience,

must be the primary motivator,” Olson said.

“This is something we need to look at from the three Es – education, enforcement and engineering.”

Ward 32 Councillor MaryMargaret McMahon said traffic safety has been an ongoing local concern along that stretch.

“We’ve heard from many residents and it’s important to us,” she said Tuesday afternoon.

“We want to get kids out walking to school.”

McMahon said she’s looking forward to seeing the petition and vowed she’d do what she can to lobby the police to take a closer look at this intersection.

Toronto’s next mayor will inherit public housing issues DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Community Housing has been a conundrum for Toronto mayors and councils since shortly after the Mike Harris government amalgamated the Metropolitan Toronto municipalities into one back in 1997.

In the course of bringing the six cities and one regional government together, the provincial Tories divested what generally crumbling public housing the province funded, onto the backs of Toronto property taxpayers, who were already dealing with municipally managed and funded housing companies.

In 2002, Toronto Council rolled it onto the Toronto Community Housing Corporation.

And 12 years later, Toronto taxpayers still haven’t crawled out from the burden of being one of the biggest landlords in North America: with 58,000 units of housing, about 164,000 tenants ranging from toddlers to seniors, and a repair backlog of more than $700 million.

And to make matters worse, 132,000 names are on the waiting list to find a subsidized home.

The organization has been problematic. While there have been notable success stories – such as the revitalization of TCHC’s oldest neighbourhood, Regent Park, with the co-operation of the Daniels Group, into a beautiful mixedincome neighbourhood between Parliament and River streets – the corporation itself has had a rough few years.

At TCHC, Chow is promising to decentralize management of seniors’ housing within the TCHC portfolio to give residents a say in how the building is governed. If successful, she’d spread the system across Toronto.

Mayoral contender John Tory, in a platform released relatively late in the campaign, said he intends to use $864 million the city has on hand for TCHC repairs to immediately begin work without waiting for the federal and provincial governments to agree to pay their share. Chow’s campaign pointed out that the money is, in fact, being spent year to year, with $128 million being spent this year.

Tory also wants to intensify affordable housing on Toronto Parking Authority and TCHC land in possible partnership with the private sector, under agreements similar to the one in place between the Daniels Group and TCHC over the redevelopment of Regent Park.

At a debate there Oct. 8, Tory held that redevelopment up as a model.

“I’ll make a bet that if you asked if any developer would have the courage and foresight and interest in city building to come into this neighbourhood and be a pioneer in the redevelopment in Regent Park you would say no one would do that and someone did,” said Tory.

“Yes. I’m optimistic that there will be developers that if we say there are pieces of land adjacent to TCHC that presently exist, there

will be somebody.”

Tory has also promised to expand the rent supplement program – although he did not state by how much – and provide more Section 37 funds for affordable housing.

He wants to re-invigorate the city’s tower renewal program begun under former mayor David Miller, to improve existing private buildings and promote affordable infill housing. He is also looking at exploring tax incentives for affordable private sector housing.

And on TCHC, Tory said he would create a task force to review and recommend changes to the structure of the housing company, involving politicians, tenants and experts. It would report quickly, by July 1.

debate in Regent Park.

Like his brother, Mayor Rob Ford, he has said he would like to see former corporation CEO Gene Jones, who abruptly resigned earlier this year following a scathing ombudsman’s report, returned to his old job.

Ford has promised a 15 per cent cut to the land transfer tax that he said would improve affordability for home buyers.

As of deadline, Ford had not released a plan for dealing with public housing or affordability beyond that.

Gapka said of the three major candidates, she finds Chow’s housing platform to be the most achievable.

Mayor candidate Olivia Chow was the first of the major candidates to come out with a housing policy, the centrepiece of which is to create 15,000 affordable rental units over four years.

Chow is aiming to introduce a mandate to encourage developers to set aside 20 per cent of new residential buildings as affordable rental housing, which she said will lead to that many new units.

The carrot is to be a deferral of development charges for those units for a decade – a deferral that could be renewed if the unit stays affordable. As well, Chow is hoping to accelerate the approval process for affordable housing proposals.

Tips For Avoiding the Flu This Season Advice to stay healthy from Toronto Central CCAC Once again flu season is around the corner and many of us are bracing for this time of year when so many become ill. While all of us are subject to the symptoms of a nasty bout with the flu, there are specific people who are particularly vulnerable. Young children and the elderly who contract the flu can suffer serious health effects as a result.

IS IT A COLD OR IS IT THE FLU? Often, people mistake a common cold with the flu.

While they are similar as they are both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. The symptoms of both can lead one to believe they’ve been afflicted by one or the other due to these similarities.

Generally speaking, a bout with the flu is much worse than with the common cold and it’s not rare for sufferers of the flu to experience symptoms such as aches and pains, fever, fatigue and dry coughing. As well, flu symptoms are more intense.

Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between each illness based on

symptoms alone. If required, special tests must be administered within the first few days of symptoms appearing to determine whether the sufferer has the flu or the common cold.

FLU FACTS • Flu is very contagious and can spread quickly • The flu can be passed on to others who may be at risk of serious complications before you even know you are sick • Flu viruses change each year.

Experts create a new vaccine to protect you each flu season.

• You can’t get the Flu from the flu vaccine.

Following are some simple ways that will decrease your chances of contracting the virus.

1. Get the Flu shot – If you haven’t been hit by the flu bug yet, get the flu shot.

Many doctor’s offices, hospitals and medical clinics will provide the shot during this time of year. Inquire about getting it done early in the season for greater protection.

2. Wash Your Hands Often – Increased hand-washing has been proven to be an effective tool in the fight against the flu and similar viruses. Remember to wash your hands when you’ve had contact with surfaces and items that are touched by many.

3. Wipe and Sanitize – Keep surfaces that you’re in contact with frequently germ free. Sanitize with disinfecting wipes and keep alcoholbased hand sanitizer close by during this time of the year.

4. Sleep – It’s been proven that lack of sleep can adversely affect one’s immune function, making it more difficult to avoid colds and flu. Make sure to get enough rest so that you’re strong enough to ward of seasonal viruses.

5. Increase Fluid Intake – Drinking extra fluids, particularly water, will keep you hydrated and will decrease the likelihood of coming down with the flu. During winter months, make an extra effort to get enough fluid in order to ward off the virus.

Flashpoint’s Amy Jo Johnson turns to crowdfunding for first feature film ‘The Space Between’ is a quirky, heartfelt comedy JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com While Beach resident Amy Jo Johnson may be most well known for her dramatic acting roles on Flashpoint, Felicity and The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, she’s already making a name for herself behind the camera as a writer and director.

“I love filmmaking. I’ve really found my true passion with writing and directing as well,” she said during a recent interview.

Six years ago, Johnson – who grew up in Cape Cod, Maine, moved to Montreal in 2005 and has called the city’s east end home since 2008 – wrote her first screen play, Crazier Than You, which in 2012 won the Blacktie Screenplay Competition at the Long Island Film Festival and came in third place at the 2013 Write Brothers Screenplay Competition at the Canada International Film Festival.

She said she is hoping Crazier Than You will become her first big budget film.

On Sunday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., Johnson launched a 35-day Indiegogo crowd funding campaign (http://igg.me/ at/thespacebetweenfilm) to help raise the $75,000 for the film, which she expects will cost $200,000 to produce.

Johnson will be releasing a prequel to The Space Between on her Indiegogo page as well as on YouTube Nov. 9.

‘Very nuturing’ She said the filmmaking community has been “very nurturing” and the many contacts she made working on Flashpoint have been eager to help with her projects, notably Leslieville’s Jam Post, which provided the sound for her three shorts as well as for The Space Between.

Fellow Flashpoint cast members, Sonya Salomaa as well as Michael Cram, also star in The Space Between.

Shooting is expected to begin in June.

Johnson plans on screening The Space Between at The Fox Theatre on Queen Street East at Beech Avenue once it’s complete late next year.
